Workshop on

Green Buildings: Achieving Sustainability

Through Energy Efficiency, Environmental Monitoring and Structural Health Monitoring

About the workshop

Rapidly growing worldwide population is triggering ever increasing demands for housing, industrial sites, civil engineering infrastructure and energy. This is putting an enormous strain on

natural resources at a time when there is a strong case to tackle climate change and minimize pollution in the cities and the industrial areas. This workshop will address the issues associated with sustainability through promotion of low embodied energy building materials, energy conservation, environmental monitoring and increasing the service life of structures through structural health monitoring using smart sensors. To cover these aspects, new building materials, predictive tools using environmental modeling, energy efficiency and modern sensing tools will be discussed. This workshop will also highlight some of the crucial technical aspects required for Indian smart cities through above stated concepts.

Recent advances in science and technology provide new opportunities for buildings to interact with both internal and external environments. This workshop will cover technology based solutions to meet our objectives through a holistic approach. This can be achieved by the induction of renewable materials such as bamboo, inclusion of fundamental green building concepts to minimize energy consumption and modern sensing technologies to continually assess structural health. The key aspects of the workshop shall be a hands on demonstration on sensors in the session “SENSORS IN ACTION”. A glimpse on piezoelectric energy harvesting shall also be presented.

The workshop will put across and showcase collaborative research activities between IIT Delhi and Trinity College Dublin, Ireland with industry collaboration under the area of “Engineered Bamboo".

The main objective of this workshop is to disseminate the research outcomes that have been obtained so far by the teams of researchers at Trinity College, Dublin and IIT Delhi, both independently and collaboratively. The deliberations shall concentrate on determining effective strategies of implementing sustainable and built environment through use of green construction materials, energy efficiency, indoor air quality monitoring andadvanced structural health monitoring.
