2018/6/11 Third BCAM Workshop on Quantitative Biomedicine for Health and Disease - BCAM Basque Center for Applied Mathematics

http://www.bcamath.org/es/workshops/qbio2017 2/4

The BCAM third Workshop on “Quantitative Biomedicine for Health and Disease” will takeplace in BCAM, Bilbao on 21st and 22nd February to discuss recent investigations bringing thehuman health and its pathologies onto the language and methods of quantitative sciences, like mathematics and engineering. The main goal of this workshop is to create cross talkbetween these two research fields, to the date isolated islands, and engage in a debate on thepotential compatibilities, advantages and disadvantages of one approach over the other incombination with their potential to address important biomedical questions.

This workshop provides an informal forum for discussing the most recent findings, developments and challenges in the field of quantitative biomedicine. Among others, particular topics that will be addressed are heart dynamics modeling and electrophysiology, excitability of individual cells, neuroimaging of brain and its pathologies, etc. It is an explicitaim of this workshop to provide a platform for researchers who currently are working inbiomedicine to come together and discuss on: a) the scope and nature of informationprovided by Biomedical data b) the assumptions and constraints imposed by mathematicaland engineering approaches and c) the capacity and limitations that arise when particularmethods (i.e. modeling and simulation, network theory or image processing) are employed todifferent human pathologies for a peculiar focus on cardiac and neurological ones.

The workshop structure, which combines high profile speakers and young talentedresearchers across world-leading institutions, will ensure a diverse and lively interactionbetween participants, helping early-career researchers to focus their interests, as discussionswill have an emphasis on current approaches and outstanding questions that should beaddressed in future research.

The event will be 2-day workshop with speakers from academic institutions and technologycenters. The aim is to bring together quantitative researchers of varied background working inbiomedical sciences. Particular attention will be given to clinical applications.
