Now in its 45th year, The IWSC’s relentless pursuit of excellence underpins every aspect of the Competition today.

ThefourthgenerationoftheinfluentialwinemakingfamilyCatena,Lauraisknownas‘thefaceofArgentinewine.’HerItaliangreatgrandfathersettledinMendozaandestablishedthewineryin1902.Herfather,Nicolas Catena Zapata was instrumental in bringingtheMalbecgrapeontotheworldstage.Today,shetravelsaroundtheworld,sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for thewinesofhercountry.
LauraiscurrentlyManagingDirectorof Bodega Catena Zapata and her own LucaWinesinMendoza,arolewhichshecombineswithherothercareerasapractisingphysicianofEmergencyMedicinein San Francisco.

WINE & SPIRIT ANALYSISAkeypartoftheIWSCprocess is to pass winning entries through to a round of detailed chemical and microbiologicalanalysistoassesstheoverallstabilityandqualityofthewineorspirit.
THE RIGOROUSJUDGING PROCESS...Withatrack-recordof45yearsofexperienceandthe support of the leaders of the wine and spiritsindustries,theIWSCstaunchlyupholdsitsoriginaljudging principles. It is this uncompromisingcommitment to these principles which sets theCompetitionapart.
Alljudgesmustattendanintroductionandbriefingandmayalsobeaskedtoattendatrialjudgingdaybeforebeingpermittedtositonapanel.
Detailedchemicalanalysishelpsrefinejudgingtofurtherassessaproduct’sfuturestabilityandlegalcompliance.Everysinglewineisassessed onitsownmeritswithinthecontextofitsclass.
TheTechnicalandJudgingCommitteegivesindependent assurance to the IWSC Board of thequality,integrity,accuracyandimpartialityof the assessment of products entered in the Competitioneachyear.
