weave’s excellent breathability prevents heavy transpiration and is non-chafing. Other than most materials AeroMesh gets also an antibacterial treatment,

thus preventing skin irritations as well as sweat-related body odours.

From a national racing series in Switzerland to four series with 19 races in seven countries: Throughout the ten years of its existence, the «iXS Downhill Cup» has evolved drastically. It´s time to look back.As one of Switzerland’s leading distributors of bicycles and related parts, intercycle has been involved in downhill racing ever since the 90s and it all started in Switzerland. Back then the national racing series changed its name quite often, from Uzimo Cup to Magura Cup to Schwinn Cup. Whatever the name, intercycle was the driving force in the background. For the season 2003, Peter Hostettler decided that the in-house sportswear brand iXS Sports Division should become the new main sponsor: The «iXS Downhill Cup» was born.

Once started with seven races in Switzerland, this has been grown to four series with 19 races in seven countries. In addition to the «iXS Swiss Downhill Cup» the «iXS German Downhill Cup», the «iXS European Downhill Cup» and the «iXS Roo-kies Cup» aimed at entry-level racers were introduced step by step. This success story is based on two factors: Patience and perseverance on behalf of the cup organizers and a philosophy of cooperating with experienced people at the venues of each respective race.

How do people judge this evolution who have been part of the series from the very start and have been witnessing both the «iXS Downhill Cup»’s growth and its becoming more and more professional first-hand? Claudio Caluori looks back: «Right from the start, the iXS Downhill Cup was a high-profile series. Apart from undisputable improvements in terms of technology, communication and the general level of the competition, the community has remained the same, and that’s good: Like in the old days, there’s still guys who are into the sport due to sheer enthusiasm, and to be part of it they do not mind to spend nights on parking lots in the middle of nowhere even in the worst weather. That’s exactly how I started as well.»

Marcus Klausmann comments on how the sport has developed during the last ten years: «A whole lot of things have changed. The sport has become much more professional and the number of participants has been increasing constantly. The iXS Cup is an important player within the sport of downhill racing. With this series, iXS has created an opportunity to race within profes-sional surroundings. That’s why I’d like to say THANK YOU…» But the professional surroundings are not everything: «Back in 2006, I crashed and fractured a vertebra in my neck just before the race in Ilmenau. On Sunday morning, Uwe Buchholz was on the phone to wish me and all the other riders all the best. I really appreciated that as it shows that we are one big family.»

Another rider who has seen a lot of races is Marcel Waldmann. «The iXS Downhill Cup is turning more and more into an in-ternational series, especially the European series. Throughout the last ten years, the number of participants has been growing incessantly. Looking at the result sheets, about the entire world is participating nowadays, and there have been riders from more than 40 countries at the start. If Peter Hostettler were not here I would not know what condition the sport of downhill racing in Europe might be in today.»

As the cup’s organizer, André Baumbach is full of praise for iXS as well: «The long-term and reliable partnership of our title sponsor is a key factor. Throughout the last ten years, the tree letters iXS have guaranteed a sustainable development in the sport of downhill racing. Thanks to this planning reliability, we have a chance to further develop both the iXS series and the sport in general. This continuous and successful work has also helped us in becoming recognized as a serious race organizer by the UCI.» Just in case you might have missed that: The UCI has given the «iXS European Downhill Cup» the status as official European downhill series. And in additional they confer the Horse Category to Monte Tamaro, the kick-off race of the Euro-pean Cup. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
