Watching television at my grandmother’s house was always a family event. My family fought over what show to watch. We were used to watching two or three channels at a time. Grandma didn’t have cable or a remote control. We had to twist and turn the antenna and our bodies just to get a decent picture, or the screen would get all fuzzy. We bought Grandma a new television (with remote control!) and a year’s cable service. Our visits to Grandma’s are much more peaceful now. We sometimes miss the wrangling.

My two favorite holidays are the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve. Though they fall at opposite times of the year, I associate both holidays with lots of eating and good company. Both holidays incorporate fun traditions that I look forward to all year long. These traditions, however, are very different. On the Fourth of July, my family and I swim, cook on the grill, and watch fireworks from our backyard. On New Year’s Eve, we huddle next to the fireplace with hot drinks, cook a feast in the oven, and share hours of conversation. Though these holidays are very different, I find myself unable to choose one as a favorite.

Which organizational structure does the author use in this paragraph? A. sequential B. cause-effect C. problem-solution D. comparison-contrast

The community has been complaining about the lack of quality education in our schools. Parents says teachers need to be held accountable for their children’s education. I don’t believe the problem is with teachers. No, the problem is much broader than teacher accountability.

Teachers have been willing to give up a lot of luxury to go into their profession. They have sacrificed high salaries and the perfect nine-to-five job. Teachers have chosen to become parents to one hundred and fifty children, not just their own. They do it for fewer dollars per year than the mechanic who fixes their cars.

Communities can never repay teachers for such sacrifices, but they can stop complaining and pitch in. We need to quit complaining about our tax money, cut through red tape, and get more support for our schools and teachers. It takes many concerned, committed people to educate a group of children.

What is the best order for these paragraphs?

1 In the summer of 1912, Houdini was chained and then nailed into a wooden box. The box was bound with rope and steel cables and lowered into the East River. Minutes passed as the audience waited to see what would happen. Fearing for the man’s life, many grasped for breath themselves. Suddenly, the man emerged from the water, unharmed and freed from his chains.

2 How did Houdini accomplish his feats? Besides being a master of illusion, he also possessed two talents. His body was flexible and muscular, which allowed him to untie knots with his fingers and teeth. He also trained himself to hold his breath underwater for up to four minutes.

3 In 1901, a man was handcuffed to a pillar by police who intended to return in an hour to free him. He escaped before they left the room. In 1903, German police accused him of cheating and encouraging criminals. He escaped in the courtroom and won the case. His name was Harry Houdini.

4 Houdini spent a lifetime performing escapes that left his audiences astonished and clamoring for more. Dangling upside down from a crane, he could wrestle himself out of a straitjacket in minutes. He could be handcuffed and lowered into a steel drum secured with padlocks and filled with water. Three minutes later, he would emerge alive and well.

A. 3,2,1,4 B. 1,2,4,3 C. 4,3,2,1 D. 2,1,4,3
