June 2015

This year’s Presidents Cup took place in January at The Dye Preserve and Quail Valley Golf Club in Florida.

The opening round was played in Jupiter at The Dye Preserve where Bob Savoie put together a great round shooting a gross 74 to finish with 40 points and two shots clear of Joe Onstott on 38 points.

The second round was played at Quail Valley Golf Club in Vero Beach. The two leaders from day 1 struggled to push on which left Ted Duncan room to pass them with a great score of 38 points to add to his opening round of 36 points and take the title.

In the ladies section, Lynda James again showed how she has won so many Club Championships at Old Head finishing as the winner with a total of 59 points over the two rounds.

As soon as the President’s Cup finished, and over a great evening at the Quail Valley River Club, our attention was turned to the match between the Old Head and the members of Quail Valley, The Old Head team were out for revenge and with one group left to account for, the Old Head team had a very narrow lead. Unfortunately, local knowledge again played its part as Quail Valley ran out eventual winners on a final score of 20 points to 19 points. Both golf courses were in excellent condition and it was great to see so many members attend the events.

This year’s on site Members’ events kicked off with the Lighthouse Mixed Pairs in April.

We had 18 teams competing in what turned out to be 2 great days of competition and camaraderie.

Day 1 saw the team of Ed and Louise Martin post a great score of 41points to lead by 3. Their closest challengers were former champions Kevin O’Brien and Eileen Sheehy who this year opted to play on separate teams and posted great scores of 38 and 37 points respectively.

The weather added to the challenging format on Day 2, and with the leaders getting off to a slow start, the team of Claire Nash and Darren Cotter posted a great score of 45 points to lead in the clubhouse with one match left on the course. Eileen and her brother Noel Sheehy equalled the day’s best score of 45 points in the last match to run out winners by a staggering margin of 5 points.

The 2015 Captain’s Cup took place at Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland.

On arrival, we were treated to a practice round at the wonderful Pepper Pike Club before dining at Steve Demetriou’s home where Captain Glickman gave us our moral boosting team talk in front of Steve’s own Stone of Accord.

The first day matches were very close with Old Head coming out on top to lead by a single point.

Day 2’s singles matches unfortunately didn’t go to plan despite good wins from Mike Minihane, Joe Jacques and of course Captain Glickman.

The final score finished Canterbury 19½ to Old Head’s 16½. The Captain’s Cup will take its place in the Canterbury Clubhouse along with the 5 other Major Championship trophies that are held there.

A record number 70 Members took part in the Club Championship and Dún Cearmna events at the end of May.

The Club Championship was always going to be a tight battle as Benny Goldkamp went in search of his 4th straight title and 17 other single digit handicappers looked to put up a challenge.

Over the 2 days, the wind was due to blow and the Scottish boys Michael Clark and Chris Mather hoped this would favour their games.

Former 3-times champions Bruce March and Benny struggled with the wind on round 1 whilst Chris Mather posted a gross score of 77 which was only bettered by a wonderful 74 from Michael Clark. The next best score was 81 by the other Scotsman in the field Gordon Masson. With the windy conditions continuing on day 2, Michael cruised home for his first Club Championship with a total of 156.

The de Courcey Championship was won by James Grannell. James played great golf over the 2 days, returning with 42 points on day 1 followed up by an equally impressive 40 points the following day. Gordon Masson was the closest challenger with 40 points after the first round but unfortunately didn’t play as well on day 2. Kevin O’Brien finished the eventual runner up with a total of 71 points followed by Jim O’Brien in 3rd place on 68 points.

The Ladies event was the tightest Club Championship yet with 1 shot eventually splitting the top 3 players. Su Kyung Kim and Karen Munro shared the first day lead with Catherine Goulet 2 shots back. After a very competitive final round with the lead changing hands between all 3 ladies, Karen Munro finished first on a total of 154 points with Catherine and Su Kyung finishing just 1 shot behind. Catherine Goulet claimed the Stableford winner’s prize with 62 points over the 2 days with Karen O ’Regan finishing runner up on 61 points.

The Member/Member Championship was always going to be competitive with our biggest field to date.

In the Ladies flight, we had a phenomenal 18 players take part and, as in 2014, the winners were Claire Nash and Eileen Sheehy with 41 points. Su Kyung Kim and Karen Munro finished runners-up.

The Men’s event was won by brothers James and Matt Grannell with a very good 40 points. Bruce March and David Grannell finished a point back to take the runners-up spot.

• Stone of Accord: Old Head’s flagship event is still full with half a dozen Members remaining on the waitlist. • The Wild Geese: this Member + 1 Guest event still has spots available although there is no accommodation left on site.

For those of you who have not yet made it to Old Head this season, we wanted to highlight the 2 main changes made out on the course over the winter months:

Some improvements were also made in different areas around the clubhouse, which we look forward to showing you on your next visit.

12th Hole: we lengthened the tee-shot ‘run-out’ from the 12th tees by taking down the mounding on the right and extending the fairway by another fifty yards towards the old 13th green.

18th Hole: we also built a new men’s tee on the 18th to take advantage of the spectacular site over ’Coosgorm’, sixty feet below.

On May 7th 2015, a ceremony was held at the Lusitania Memorial and Old Head Signal Tower to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania. The Memorial is located on the hill outside the gates of Old Head Golf Links.

The Lusitania lies just over 11 miles due south and a few degrees west of the Old Head and the ceremony was attended by many relatives of people who died on that tragic day in 1915. Various government dignitaries, as well as hundreds of visitors and local residents, were also in attendance. A minutes silence was observed at 2.10pm – the exact time the Lusitania sank.

The renovated Signal Tower was opened on the same day. The Tower was built in 1805 as a response to the threat of invasion from Napoleonic France and is one of the most accessible of 81 such towers on the west, south and east coasts of Ireland. They were built within sight of each other on some of the most remote and beautiful headlands expressly for the purpose of passing warning signals to the authorities in Dublin.

Some recent coverage of Old Head, from the sky, space and the bottom of the sea!

For the days when you are missing Old Head, transport yourself there at the click of a button and watch this footage shot a few months ago by means of a drone.

Similarly, the following film of Kinsale is worth watching:

Old Head Honorary Member and Astronaut Dan Tani recently published a couple of interviews, in which he describes what it is like to view the course from space:

And finally: this is what the bottom of the sea bed looks like around Old Head! It was shot by local pharmacist, photographer and diver John Collins, who describes how, when and where the shot was taken:

“It was shot almost exactly a year ago, in mid-June 2014. We were diving on a site on the west side of the Old Head that we had not dived before, about half way between Ringagurteen and Cuas Gorm (I’m not sure where this is in golfing terms, but probably around the 16th-17th?). The water was really clear, and the sea bed had been stripped of most of the kelp from the severe winter storms of the previous December and January. I was diving with Dutch underwater photographer, Rinie Luykx, who was working on a feature on Irish diving for the Dutch diving magazine ‘Duiken’. Our plan was to explore this area as the underwater topography looked promising on the depth sounder. Dive boat skipper, Graham Ferguson of Oceanaddicts, briefed us on the dive plan before we rolled over the side of the boat and descended slowly to the bottom. I landed on the gravel – almost exactly where the photograph was taken – to be surrounded by golf balls and laughed into my regulator, managing a couple of shots before we began our swim out along the reef wall. The dive was spectacular with a fantastic variety of marine life on the sea bed and hidden in the rocky crevices – we saw Spiny Spider Crabs, Lobster, Ling and ascended to see a beautiful Barrel Jellyfish on our safety stop before returning to the surface. The photograph was taken with an Olympus OMD E-M1 land camera, in a special Nauticam underwater housing, using an extreme wide-angle fisheye lens and two underwater flash units for lighting”.John published the photo and called it “Lost Balls”. Can you spot one of yours? And did you, like us, think that there should be a lot more down there!
