NOTES
(1) The value quoted is for inorganic mercury which the 2009 SGV indicates will be the most relevant in near surface soils. Consideration will need to be given to the requirement to look at elemental and methyl mercury values separately should these be considered to be present on the site.
(2 This value has been benchmarked against the SGV at 6% SOM.
(3) Where xylene result is not split into isomers, compare the total xylene concentration to the lowest xylene isomer as an initial screen.
Values in bold are the Category 4 Screening Values (C4SLs) published by Defra on 27 March 2014 and adjusted by Opus for SOM contents of 0.25%, 1% and 3%.
* = assessment criteria exceeds lower saturation limit and vapour pathway is important contributor to exposure. Tier 1 SSV is limited to soil saturation limit.
(GAC values in brackets) = effective assessment criteria calculated where the vapour pathway is only one of the exposure pathways (in accordance with Section 4.12 of EA Science Report: SC050021/SR4).
Reference should also be made to the accompanying General Notes and also the Opus Methodology for the Screening of Soils in Terms of the Risk to Human Health.
V2014.2 3 December 2014
Opus UK Tier 1 Soil Screening Values – V2014.2 3 December 2014
GENERAL NOTES
These notes apply to all land use scenarios:
1. Identification of soil concentrations above the appropriate Category 4 Screening Level (C4SL),
Soil Guideline Value (SGV) or Opus Tier 1 soil screening value (SSV) should prompt consideration of further Tier 2 site-specific quantitative risk assessment (QRA). It is recommended that the methodology of this assessment is agreed with the Regulatory Authorities.
2. With regards to any elevated organic compounds (notably the heavier TPH fractions),
consideration will have to be given to aesthetic values at the concentrations detailed above which are not considered harmful to human health.
3. No account has been taken of the additive or synergistic effects of the compounds since
guidance is being finalised in this regard.
4. The values for pesticides are based on the lower of either the allotment or residential with home grown produce models, applied to all land uses for the respective soil organic matter (SOM) contents shown. This is a conservative assumption that may allow scope for adjustment based on site specific Tier 2 QRA modelling. Values which are based on the allotment model are distinguished from the residential model as they are in italics.
5. Values for Copper, Boron, Zinc and Tin are set at residential with homegrown produce for all
land uses, except allotments. Values may be higher for other land uses. In addition there may be a requirement to consider the effects on plant growth based on the British Standard for topsoil (BS3882:2007). It should be noted that some compounds may be pH sensitive.
