What is SAE J2534?

► Proposed by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

► Originated as an U.S. industry standard for programming emission related ECUs in the independent aftermarket service environment

► Became a standard for a general purpose vehicle interface

► Evolved into 2 specifications plus a third on the horizon:

J2534-1 Recommended practice for emission ECU reprogramming

J2534-2 Specification for Non-emission related systems and 96-03 ECUs

J2534-3 is a testing procedure to prove correct implementation.

What is SAE J2534-1?

Originally became effective with introduction of MY’2004 vehicles.

► Defines interface (API) between PC host applications and vehicle interface device (Flasher).

► Specifies emission vehicle physical interfaces and protocols.

► Applies to all MY’1996 to present vehicles with re-programmable ECUs.

MY 2004 and later vehicles MUST support reprogramming via J1962 connector.

MY ’96 – ‘03 vehicles may require reprogramming via proprietary data link connector.

J2534 Questions…

TSB may not explain why a reflash is required

Often the problems meant to be corrected with a reflash are not explained in a TSB.

The vehicle may not be flashable

I.E. Suzuki?

J2534 Calibration files may not be available for downloading

Not all vehicle manufacturers have complied with J2534 (Suzuki)

Other adapters may be needed for non-emission related flashes.

96-03 vehicles are not required to use the J1962 connector.

A J2534 device may be only one of a couple tools required to complete the

Final Summary

• J2534 is here to stay. It is a good method for emission-related and

SOME non-emission related programming.

• Emerging ISO standards integrate scan tool and programming

functions in one tool. These standards are already being adopted by

OEMs.

• You rarely fix a car with one tool. Post-programming scan tool

functions are required in many cases.

Calibration Catch Code

Beginning in 2000, a 4-digit alpha-numeric code, referred to

as Calibration Catch Code, appears in parentheses at the

end of the calibration code.

Example; 9-EQA-BBD 9 (BAX3)

The BAX3 in this example is the Calibration Catch Code.

This Calibration Catch Code information is attached with a

tag to the PCM connector and, on some models, the

Calibration Catch Code tag may also be located on the "A"

pillar or inner fender. This Calibration Catch Code is needed

to determine calibration number.
