Dear Friends and Members of BRMC

Greetings in Jesus Precious Name

How wonderful it is for us to know that we have a living Saviour. We have just celebrated Holy Week 2012. Together as a church we observed Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter/Resurrection Sunday. At Christmas we usually focus more on who Jesus is. At Holy Week and Easter we usually focus more on what Jesus has done for us. Hallelujah!

The story is told of a conversation which took place in 1933 between a Jewish young person and Alfred H. Ackley, a Presbyterian pastor. The Jewish young man had just heard Ackley preach the Gospel with the invitation to come to Christ. Not to be silenced, he gave the counter challenge: ‘Why should I worship a dead Jew?’ Ackley’s immediate response was: “But He lives! Jesus lives within my heart!” The result of that conversation was the beautiful poem which became a famous hymn. It testifies to the faith we all have in a Crucified and Risen Christ.

Surely what we have in our hearts, no one can take away from us. Thank God for the Risen Christ in this world of ours that is slowly falling apart.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes, its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8)

May you enjoy this January to April 2012 issue of Uphill & Beyond. To God be the Glory! Christ is Risen, just as He said!

Welcome Back to BRMC! Tell Us Something About Yourself

BRMC was my Methodist home church as I had been a worshipper and member since my return from overseas studies in the early 1990s. I had served as Boys’ Brigade Captain and as a Lay Ministry Staff (LMS) doing the work of a youth worker with BRMC before I began my ministry as a Methodist pastor in 2005.

Since then, I have pastored Aldersgate Methodist Church and Trinity Methodist Church. Aside from my responsibilities as a pastor, I am actively involved in the Board of Youth Ministry as Assistant Director and have been passionately engaged in the development and training of lay and full-time youthworkers. I am also Associate Director, Ministry in Schools, and share the work of overseeing the Christian ministry in our mission schools, especially the recruitment and training of our Christian Ministry Staff.

I am married to Ai Jin who has been a Church Counsellor with BRMC for many years, and we have three children - each of whom has been baptized the churches I’ve served in. Elijah, 8, was baptized in BRMC, Emma, who just started Primary 2, was baptized in Aldersgate MC, and Ezrela, 3, who was baptized in Trinity MC. They are a riot of joy for us, and an endless source of epiphanies for me as a preacher.

Share With Us Some Lessons You Have Learnt in Your Years in Ministry

One of the things I have learnt ministering in different churches is the importance of the fundamentals of faith. We as Christians need to get to grips constantly with our identity as children of God, as disciples of Christ, and to live as disciples and to be active in discipling others. We must always live, act and serve bearing in mind that as we serve with the gifts the Holy Spirit has given us, we are, at the same time, to live and serve with the fruit of the Holy Spirit borne out in us. In doing so, we become more like Christ, and the church - TOGETHER - bears witness to and glorifies Christ more fully.

Welcome Ministry Intern - Jeremy Ong

BRMC has been the training ground for many Christian workers. Here is a short introduction to our ministry intern Jeremy Ong, from Trinity Theological College, 2nd year Masters in Divinity student doing his field education here in BRMC. Jeremy Ong is a member of Wesley Methodist Church.

What do you see as your calling in life and ministry?

From the age of 17, I had wanted to be in full-time vocational ministry. Over the years, this has narrowed down to pastoral ministry with the Methodist Church in Singapore. When I started seminary training, I pasted on my wall in large bold print the words of the Apostle Paul to the church of Corinth, “...I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God” (1 Cor 2:1-5 NRSV).

I believe these verses are analogous to God’s calling on my life and I see my ministry as primarily one of proclaiming the work of Christ - His death on the cross, His resurrection from the grave and His impending return. It is my daily prayer that God will allow me to serve as a conduit for His Holy Spirit and His power in order that people will come to faith in the one true and living God in Christ Jesus.

What would your placement and internship in BRMC entail? And what are you looking forward to experiencing and learning?

I’ve been at BRMC since July 2011 and I have thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship of the church family over the past months. My learning objectives at BRMC have been preaching and pastoral care and the Rev. Malcolm Tan continues to be generous with his time to coach me on preaching and sermon preparation as well as the ministry of a Methodist minister.I have learnt so much just from attending services at BRMC, observing the different facets of ministry here and attending cell group with other young adults. It is indeed wonderful to be able to worship at a sister Methodist church and yet still feel completely at home. To God be the Glory!

An Interview with BRMC’s Founding Pastor - Rev Peter Lim

On 26 February 2012, BRMC observed ACS Sunday. This was a day before Founders Day 1 March 2012, which commemorates 126 years of God’s sustaining grace over our ACS schools. What made the day more memorable was that our founding pastor, Rev Peter Lim paid us a visit and encouraged us tremendously with his address on the pulpit that day. Here we bring you his words in an interview with him conducted by our church worker Mr Pang Seng Hock.

Rev Lim, how did you come to faith in Christ? In 1932, my grandmother announced to the family she had become a Christian. She broke her opium pipe, attended Dr Chen Su Lan’s anti-opium clinic and never touched the stuff again. Through Bible lessons, she learned to read in Hokkien, and even quoted Scripture! She was determined to bring our family to Christ. When I was 10, she asked me to hold her hand and guide her to the church night prayer meeting. It was a ploy – it was she who was guiding me! Before long, I followed her regularly to church. The song ‘Gentle Jesus Meek and Mild, Look upon a little child… suffer me to come to Thee’ moved me deeply, and I accepted Christ. One by one, our family became Christians. We attended Dr John Sung’s revival meetings. Here I took the name ‘Peter’ and together with

my siblings formed the 104th Evangelistic band. Occasionally we joined grandmother’s senior band to preach at the Anti-Opium Clinic. I joined the Epworth League (later renamed Methodist Youth Fellowship or MYF) and became a member of Telok Ayer Methodist Church, where I taught Sunday School as a youth.

War disrupted Mr. Lim’s studies at Raffles College. He served in the Medical Auxiliary Service. After Occupation, he joined the Malaya Methodist Annual Conference as a member-on-trial (MOT), actively promoting MYF to churches in Singapore and Malaya, and also joined the Chinese Young Men’s Christian Association.

Rev Lim, how did you get involved with the Boys’ Brigade? After the war, I became a teacher. At Anglo-Chinese Continuation School (Coleman St.), the 3rd Coy. BB were impressive, and I joined the movement. On my posting to Outram Road School, I started the 8th Coy. BB. My sister taught at Fairfield Methodist Girls’ School and was active with the Girls’ Life Brigade (later renamed Girls’ Brigade). Together with Telok Ayer Epworth League members, our BB Boys and GB Girls formed the nucleus for Fairfield Methodist Church.

ACS, 12th Coy. BB and Barker Road Methodist ChurchAwarded a United Methodist Church scholarship, Mr. Lim resumed studies and graduated from Raffles College. He joined Anglo-Chinese School as teacher and Chaplain in 1950. He formed the ACS Theatre Club – directing and producing a number of plays. Active in the school’s Geographical Society, Debate Elocution, Quiz Team, School Welfare Council and Editorial Board; he also served as Pastor at Fairfield Methodist Church, BB officer, and lecturer at the fledgling Teachers’ Training College. He wrote March of the Heroes, first in a series for Christian education books for use in Methodist schools, Churches and homes.

I was keen to start the BB at ACS. But our principal Dr Peterson felt that having the Scouts, there was no need to start another uniform group. Later, his successor Dr Thio Chan Bee gave his support, and the 12th Coy. BB was formed in 1954.

A Government Scholarship enabled Mr Lim to graduate with Honours in Geography at the University of Malaya. In 1956, he volunteered to pastor a group of already zealous ACS Boys, and Barker Road Methodist Church was birthed.

An Interview with BRMC’s Founding Pastor - Rev Peter Lim

Rev Lim, any reflections on being the first pastor of BRMC?BRMC’s necessity can be seen in what BRMC is doing today to glorify God. I would have liked to stay with BRMC, but handed it over to Rev Robert Foster, who processed the recognition of the new church. I then accepted a scholarship from the United Methodist Church of USA and left for theological studies in America.

Rev Lim graduated with a Masters in Christian Education from Columbia University. He returned to ACS and BRMC; serving also in the Malayan Methodist Church Conference and National Council of the Boys’ Brigade. In 1961, Rev Lim left Singapore to take on responsibilities in Seremban as Principal of Anglo-Chinese School and Pastor of Wesley Methodist Church – where he set up the 1st Seremban Coy. BB.

A Historic MilestoneIn 1966 Rev Lim was among those who were moved to propose for the Methodist Church of Malaysia

and Singapore to be autonomous from the United Methodist Church. After much groundwork, the Central Conference supported the motion in 1968, with Rev Lim as Secretary of the First General Conference.

“A stirring devotional address by Rev S.T. Peter Lim stressed ‘the stewardship of responsibilities’ – calling for all members of the newly autonomous church to practise consecrated giving and conscientious spending. He expressed confidence that if Methodists here would take the responsibility of autonomy seriously there would be structure from local resources, and even in reaching out, no difficulty in sustaining the costs of the new church through mission to the meet the needs of others.” P18, Methodist Message, Sept 1968, abridged.

Further Work in EducationBeyond ACS and the church, Rev Lim lectured at the Teachers’ Training College and was also a news broadcaster with Radio and Television Singapore. As an administrator at the National University of Singapore, his work ranged from Acting Registrar to Director of Student Welfare. He started the NUS Alumni and Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society. Inspired by a friend’s note: “A teacher can teach anything” – he started the Institute of Molecular Biology and Institute of Public Relations; before joining the Asia Development Institute in Bangkok.

In 1976, political realities prompted autonomy of the Methodist Church in Singapore from Malaysia. At that General Conference, Rev Lim’s draft of The Methodist Church Discipline was adopted. He migrated to Canada with his family in 1978.

Rev Lim you are healthy and active, what have you been up to in Canada?I am lazy as far as physical exercise is concerned. My health comes from God. I serve at Highlands United Church of Canada in Alberta as Emeritus Minister. Much of my time is spent studying the Bible, reading religious books and preparing sermons. Recently I reflected on what it means to ‘lay up treasures in heaven’ – it is to look forward to wonderful relationships established here when we get to heaven. I enjoy preaching – writing and re-writing sermons, at times right up to early Sunday mornings.

Rev Lim, are you an old Boy of ACS?I attended Pearl’s Hill Primary, Outram Road School and Raffles Institution.

Well, I’m very glad you came to teach at ACS! Do you know that today there is a BB Coy. at Raffles Institution?Did you know I was a member of the RI Cadet Corps and blew the bugle in its band? The education I received at RI was normal bread, whereas ACS education is living bread. I received my living education through the church. Rev Lim lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He has a son, daughter, two granddaughters, two grandsons and three great grandchildren. His beloved wife Flora passed away in 2010. They were married for 67 years. His favourite hymn is ‘Abide with me.’

Rev Lim, God’s best is yet to be!

BRMC Watchnight Service 31 December 2011

At the stroke of midnight on 31 December 2011, many members and visitors of BRMC warmly wished each other a ‘Blessed New Year’ amidst loving hugs, handshakes and warm greetings at the ACS BR Auditorium during our annual Watchnight Service. It was wonderful to see families turning up for the event, towing little toddlers and young adolescents still awake long past their bedtime but desiring to spend the wee final hours of 2011 as a family with the body of Christ. BRMC, like most Methodist churches, has kept this tradition of year end Watchnight Service following the Wesleyan Covenant Service initiated some 264 years ago in Spitalfields, England.

This event also saw the upper deck of the Auditorium filled with youth and young adults, preferring the camaraderie of Christian friends and Christian fellowship at the dawning of the new 2012. It was certainly a sight to behold the church of tomorrow stand without hesitation to say The Wesleyan Covenant Prayer in unison that night, committing themselves to the will of God for the coming year!

BRMC Watchnight Service 31 December 2011

Indeed we did not just meet to usher in the New Year 2012 as the Body of Christ but also to renew our covenant to live our lives not for ourselves but for God, taking seriously our vows of consecration. What a memorable night it was, in which our faith was renewed from the preaching of the Word by Rev Dr Edward Pousson on Genesis 50: 22-26 & Hebrews 11:22. We remember his convicting cry: “God will surely visit you!” Against the backdrop of the 40th Anniversary of the ACS Clock Tower Revival, we were stirred to awaken as a congregation and to pray for greater personal and corporate repentance leading to revival. Praise God that the Charismatic Movement in Singapore first started in 1972 at ACS Barker.

BRMC URS Christmas Service 2011The Upper Room Christmas Service His Story, His Time25 December 2011

The Upper Room Service ushered in Christmas with a reenactment of the birth of Christ and the significance of this event for all humanity. Congregation members and their guests, stepped into a time-capsule as they were greeted by ushers robed in period costumes. The Sophia Blackmore Hall was decked out with marketplace stalls, wandering cardboard sheep, inns and a barn.

The resounding call of the shofar kicked off Christmas celebrations at the Upper Room Service. This was followed by a time of worshipping the Lord Jesus in Spirit and in Truth, in unison with the throngs of angelic hosts in the heavenly realms. The Christmas Story unfolded as the path of two young men crossed and one shared the meaning of Christmas with the other who was recounting his life’s challenges when everything appeared bleak and hopeless. An Upper Room Service cast comprising the very young to the not-so-very-young, took the congregation through a heart-warming rendition of Joseph and Mary’s angelic encounters, being turned away by various inn-keepers in their search for a suitable place for the birth of the baby Jesus and finally to that barn where Jesus was born and held court with the Magi, shepherds and adoring angels.

BRMC URS Christmas Service 2011The Upper Room Christmas Service His Story, His Time

The essence of Christmas was reinforced by Dr Tony Chi at the pulpit. He shared that God has a plan and purpose for every person, restoring, turning unholiness into holiness and transforming seemingly insignificant lives into lives of great consequence for God and people. God made a purposeful decision to come into the world through Jesus who delivers from sin and reconciles people back to God. Jesus, God’s “delete” button, deletes man’s sins through his atoning blood shed on the Cross at Calvary and allows man to walk a new life with meaning and direction. A salvation call to receive Christ and a rededication call to the Lord Jesus ensued.

The congregation adjourned after the Service, to a Christmas Day fellowship buffet complete with turkey and panettone, a sweet Christmas bread loaf. A time of warm fellowship ensued, among hearts touched by the fragrance and significance of Jesus at Christmas-time, heralding a wonderful fresh season in the Christ Jesus.

Parable of The Persistent Widow4 December 2011

“I spoke to the prophets, gave them many visions and told parables through them.” (Hosea 12:10) Many prophets of the Bible, including Jesus Himself conveyed messages and attributes of God in story telling (parables). BRMC’s Creative Arts Ministry (CAM) in the Christmas presentation of “The Parables of Jesus” is an attempt to convey the Word and the Message of God in songs and music, in dance and drama. On 4 December 2011, CAM told the story of the “Parable of the Persistent Widow” (Luke 18:1). Here is the event in pictures. May the story-telling continue. To Him Be all Glory and Praise.

“ I have been involved with the Creative Arts Ministry evangelistic year-end concerts for the past 5 years - 2 years as a helper backstage, and the last 3 years as the MC/Narrator. What never fails to amaze me, year after year, was that despite the somewhat irregular turnouts for our rehearsals by the participants generally and the operational difficulties encountered, yet somehow, through the guidance and bountiful grace of God, all things seem to fall in place and move along without any major problems or hitches on D-day, Hallelujah ! You know, BRMC has a wealth of artistic talents, i.e singers, dancers, musicians, composers and actors and I certainly look forward to the day when all these members can get together and present an artistic-offering to God in song and dance. It will certainly bring the House down!

Regarding the Concert in Dec 2011, we made do with a small 3-piece band, a key-boardist, a lead guitarist and a violinist. It was such a revelation to hear the majestic strings of the violin, played so well by Lai Yi Xuan from Toa Payoh Methodist, that it made me wonder why we have neglected this musical instrument in the bands supporting the worship segments in our various church services.”

In All things and in ALL ways God NEVER fails in His promise :” I will never leave you nor forsake you....” I could count with one hand the few short periods that the team had time to REALLY practise TOGETHER. Yet, after the concert, I received questions and comments; “....wah! you people must have taken a whole year to put the show together.”

Yes, thanks is due to our “leader”.....as she knows us so well ... That inspite of all the hurdles coming our way, she knew we would overcome them. I was truly overcome with joy to see the number that turned up for the Prayer Watch on the eve of our concert. It is such a special privilege to be in the Team. There have been anxious moments, no doubt, but there are times when we have lots of fun and joy too. We shed tears of sadness, but they will , without fail, turn to tears of joy !

THREE NIGHTS CHRISTMAS VIGIL (Tatlong Gabing Simbang Gabi)

BRMC Filipino Congregation (BRMC-FC)

The BRMC Filipino Congregation (BRMC-FC) held a Three Nights Christmas Vigil or “Tatlong Gabing Simbang Gabi” last December 22-24, 2011 at ACS Movement Gym. Simbang Gabi -a Tagalog word for nine nights or early morning Worship originated in the early days of Spanish rules and became a distinct feature of Philippine culture and tradition during and every Christmas season, and is a time of great family bonding and reunion.

I have attended the “ Simbang Gabi” (Three Nights of Christmas Vigil) twice since joining BRMC-FC. For all the three nights, we gather together at around 7 pm and start a time of worshipping the Lord by singing some Christmas songs led by our liturgist. The preacher for the first night vigil was Sister Faith D. Loscos, and she preached the message entitled “the Greatest Gift”. On our second night vigil, Rev Jun Equila preached a sermon on “Liwanag ng Pasko” (The Light of Christmas) and on the third night vigil, Sister Marlyn C. Garcia preached on “A Gift Worth Giving”.

All the three messages were focused on the best gifts we can give to each other at Christmas time. We learnt that the best gifts are usually the non-material kind and therefore impossible to measure in cost, like the gift of good memories, the gift of our time and most of all the gift of our love. Just like our God who love us so much and gives us eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ.

Different Filipino organizations and other Filipino Fellowships joined our congregation for the Three Nights of Christmas Vigil and rendered special songs for each night. This created in us the feeling of Christmas and the presence of God. My heart was greatly stirred in listening to the songs and the sermon every night.

Everyone was warmly welcomed and members of the church invited their friends to listen and experience the “Simbang Gabi.” Many of the members were here in Singapore having left their family in the Philippines, hence being at the vigil gave them the feeling of being with family at Christmas. You can see the sweet smile of every person who attended. The evening did not end there but continued with warm sharing after the vigils over a sumptuous spread of delicious food. Everyone was blessed and am looking forward to next years next Christmas Vigil!

This trip was significant as it marked the 20th anniversary of the Shalom Foundation, the mission organization that our church has been partnering with in the work in South India. In fact, I remember that my first ever trip to India was in 2002 and that was for Shalom Foundation’s 10th anniversary celebrations. I had fond memories of that trip as I witnessed the vibrancy of God’s people from all over the world coming together to work together to advance His kingdom. Subsequently, I went back with my wife for several more mission trips as well as for medical missions. This time round, I was so glad to see that 20 years on, God has indeed transformed the landscape of Vellore and Yelligiri (the 2 places where Shalom Foundation does its outreach work). We were also blessed to have met brothers and sisters from places as far a way as Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany.

The newly completed multipurpose hall Communion in the hall

From 2 - 4 December our team participated in the 20th anniversary celebrations by conducting some children’s programmes. On the evening that we arrived, we had the honour of opening the 2nd level of the Multipurpose Hall in Yelligiri. This is a very useful building which BRMC helped to build. It has really helped the brothers at Shalom reach out to the children by giving them a place to hold their youth camps. On the morning of 2 December, we conducted games and activities for the 100 or so children and youth who had been bussed up to Yelligiri for the celebrations.

The next day, there was a worship service in the morning followed by a children’s programme conducted by the German brothers and sisters from the Emotion Church in Essen. After lunch, we heard the testimonies of former sponsored children of Shalom. This was a very special session and their testimonies were truly powerful. The following morning we witnessed the baptism of 8 new believers and it was indeed a joyous occasion! We also had our usual worship service with the holy communion and Pastor Jayapaul shared a little on his vision for next decade.

Finally, this trip was also special because we had a number of first timers to India with us. The Goh family and Darrell Lee had never been to India before although they have heard a lot about the work of Shalom. It is my hope that the words in this article will encourage more people to make the trip to South India and contribute a small part to God’s magnificent work there.

“This is my first trip to Shalom. It was a response to Pastor Jayapaul’s repeated question to my husband Terence: “When are you coming to visit us at Shalom?”

At the anniversary celebration, I witnessed the fruits of Pastor Jayapaul’s labour and that of his team too. They have set an example of dedication, commitment, faithfulness and love for God and His people, in this case the children and youth at Shalom. This fine example is a reminder of how I should serve God here in BRMC and in the community of Singapore.

Working with children and youth demands much energy, creativity and passion which Pastor Jayapaul and his team have shown through these last 20 years. Boys who have grown up in the home and youths trained at the Yeligiri Hills centre have continued to stay and serve in the Foundation. I hope to be able to contribute to the support given by BRMC in prayer and tithes so that Shalom can continue to do their outreach work.” By Sandra Goh

BRMC Youth Camp 2011

1-4 December 2011

BRMC Youth Camp 2011 was held from 1-4 December. The theme of the camp was ‘You Are God Alone’ and the theme verse was Nehemiah 9:6. The purpose of this Youth Camp was for the youth to understand God’s awesome power and glory leading to a deeper worship and and offering of themselves as living sacrifice to Him. Here is a short report of the camp along with 2 testimonies by Thomas Low and Michael Wong who are both 17 years old.

172 youths and 21 Sunday School teachers attended the camp. We had four days of fun and fellowship. The youth established many bonds with new friends and they were very willing to share testimonies with each other. There were games where everyone got dirty in the mud. And there was excellent food for all. Everyone had a great time, but it wasn’t all fun and games. There were many moments of intimate prayer and serious learning. During one of the theme talks, they were shown God’s incredible hugeness and majesty through the DVD, ‘Indescribable’ by Louie Giglio. Our camp speaker, Mr Joseph Chean, also added much light to the theme. His delivery and message were inspired and definitely a word in season for the campers. They now realize their insignificance in this universe. But they also know the extent of God’s love for them. Most of them have grown to be much more mature both spiritually and mentally. BRMC Youth Camp 2011—You Are God Alone

I’ll share a bit of who I am first, I’m a student from a local college of the Arts. So you can imagine the kind of exposure I have to life outside of church, alcohol, drugs, sex (and rock and roll). I wasn’t doing anything dramatically horrible to myself, but as someone who started out as a strong Christian this did bring me down a few notches. Earlier this year, I made up my mind not to go for church camp, I felt drained and drawn away from church. But things turned around and my youth worship adult advisor convinced me to go, however I still held back and decided to go “just for the sake of going”.

During the course of the camp, God opened my heart and eyes to Him, and I was reminded what being a Christian meant. To worship Him and only Him, worship him not only in song and praise, but in everything we do, in spirit and in truth. At first, I was worried this was a one-off thing. A fleeting memory to be thrown in the pile with the rest of my life, but it wasn’t. God spoke to me, not in an audible voice, but through the people around me. And that encouraged me to live my life every day for Him to the best of my ability, to turn to Him in times of weakness, to thank Him in times of Joy and happiness, to have Him not just as a king, my master or my savior, but as a friend, one I can trust my whole life to.

Church camp ended my life as one who believed God stays up in heaven and has more to worry about than me. Church camp revived me as a Christian who believes He has made everything on earth, from the stars to the seas, from the desert to the cities. The billions of people that live on the earth, every hair of every person, and out of all those things, he chose you and me. We are worth more to Him than the whole earth and everything on it. And that just makes me want to give Him praise.

BRMC Youth Camp 2011—You Are God Alone

By Michael Wong

The theme talks and the workshops reminded me of one thing, the greatness, majesty, perfection, lovingness and gracefulness of our God. Many people have no idea the weight the phrases “God is the maker of heaven and earth” and “You are God alone” carry. He is really just so amazing and indescribable. His ways we will never understand. We can spend all of eternity learning about Him, and still never come close to knowing the full extent of his greatness. God’s creation of the universe mentioned in the very beginning of the bible is enough to make me understand that I will never be able to fully know God, because He is just too great for my comprehension! And I take so much joy in knowing that the God I love is THAT GREAT. During night 3, I wasn’t crying during the altar call. I was trembling, yet smiling, because God’s strong presence in the GB campsite’s hall brought me this joy and peace that surpasses all understanding. The God who holds the vast universe in the palm of His hand is also the very God who sacrificed Himself for us, who came to earth not to be served, but to serve, saving all of humankind from the wages of sin for all of eternity. I was humbled by this.

I’m pretty involved in different forms of ministry in school and church. But I’m afraid to admit that pride did stand in my way. For this camp, I was appointed to be the F&B committee’s 2IC. And strange enough, it was my service in this appointment which impacted me the most during this camp, more than the theme talks or workshops. During the camp, as the F&B 2IC, there were a lot of things which I had to do, but honestly, that is perfectly fine with me, and I’d like it to stay that way! The sacrifices I made are honestly NOTHING when compared to the extent of God’s love for us. Being the F&B 2IC required me to carry out a lot of tasks which wore me out and dirtied my hands quite a bit, such as carrying around heavy bags of food and cleaning up. But on the morning of day 3, as I looked at my hands, all I could think of was the pain that Jesus felt when those nails drove through His hands. The discomfort I felt was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING compared to the torture Jesus endured that painful day He offered Himself as that one perfect living sacrifice for our sake. I was truly, truly humbled by God during this camp.

The biggest takeaway I have from this camp, and the greatest thing I thank God for, is for humbling my heart to see how great our He is.

ofHouseSalvationMy Baptism Testimony

By Luke Yan, Photo By Rachel Chan

BRMC Youth Baptisms

Though I was born in a strong Christian family, my parents never had me baptized as a child. As a young child growing up in the previous churches I used to attend, the closest I ever got was to attend a few baptism classes. I was probably much too young to fully comprehend the true meaning and significance of baptism and thus, I soon lost interest in the class and did not get baptised.

As I continued to progress on with life and my journey with God, I never really saw an urgent need to get baptized. While I did see baptism as something I would like to undergo one day, I felt that as long as I was staying in church and fellowshipping with others, as long as I was actively serving and growing in Christ, as long as I have already accepted Him as my Lord and Saviour, it really did not matter whether I was baptized or not.

Matthew 28:18-20:“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given unto me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

This was the passage Pastor Malcolm taught from during his pre-baptism lesson. As a member of Campus Crusade while studying in Polytechnic, this is an extremely familiar passage to me, one that I have read and recited countless times and have even committed to memory. Yet, while I’ve always seen it as a command for us as Christians to spread the Gospel, I never really saw it with regard to myself, that I should be baptized in His name even as I have committed to live as His disciple. While I used to see baptism as something that is just ‘good to have’, I began to see the importance of this command, to publicly acknowledge in the presence of my family and friends that I am a disciple of Christ.

Admittedly, I initially chose baptism by immersion based on rather frivolous reasons (I thought it sounded the most fun). However, as Pastor Malcolm preached on the various modes of baptism (sprinkling, pouring and immersion) and what they signify, I began to realize what immersion truly symbolized, to die to the world and to be raised with Christ. It was something I found to be truly apt at this point of my life as I’m currently serving my National Service, where every single day is a struggle to die to a world filled with cursing and swearing, gossip, lies, pride and judgement, and instead, to live as Christ has called us to.

Needless to say, the experience of baptism brought much deeper spiritual meaning to me than simply getting wet in front of my family and friends. It was at baptism that I made fresh commitments to God to live as Christ’s disciple, surrendering to Him that things in my life that displeased Him and earnestly asking Him to change my life. It was an act of obedience unto Christ to declare my desire to follow Him as a response to all He has done for me. Most importantly, it was at baptism where I came into a deeper level of loving surrender into His loving hands.

BRMC Preaching Point at Holland Village—ACS (Int’l)

“Hello, will you be my friend?” I asked another young girl in school. That encounter was one of my earliest childhood memories, and it was the only way I knew how to make friends at that time. As an adult, however, we rarely go about intentionally asking to befriend someone. Thus, exactly a year ago, when my husband and I decided to volunteer as Befrienders for the MCS 125 Project tie up with HVPP Just for Love, we were excited and apprehensive at the same time.

Firstly, both of us are not local Singaporeans, and are not familiar with the ‘chronically poor’ in Singapore. The phrase ‘chronically poor’ elicited daunting images in our minds, and the thought of “forcing ourselves” onto strangers made us a little uncomfortable. In addition, coming from a European welfare state, my husband had never participated in voluntary social work prior to this. I have engaged in several charity and volunteering projects in the past, but the MCS125-HVPP Just for Love Community Project was a year-long project – the longest undertaking I had ever attempted. What were we to expect? What made us think we were in a position to assist these families? What if the families find us annoying? However, it sounded easy enough: once a month, we deliver cheques to two beneficiary families, spend some time with them and help them in whatever ways we can.

An hour a month. That’s less than 1% of 720 hours. Surely we can manage that, we thought.

I remember our first visit very vividly. The reception we received from both families couldn’t be more different. The first family opened readily to us, giving us a full insight into their living conditions and daily problems. The hour went by very quickly. The second family, however, was a lot more reserved. We felt like we were imposing on their time and their personal space. After 15 minutes, I found myself looking at my watch nervously. The seconds ticked by slowly. It was awkward. That day, we left our beneficiaries with heavy hearts and a plethora of mixed emotions.

We could not quite believe what we had heard and saw that first day - the life struggles, associations with local gangsters, continuous bouts of sickness, estranged family relationships, theft at home, job difficulties, learning disabilities, living from hand to mouth every day. You name it, we heard it. Living conditions were squalid at best. Material comforts were negligible. We felt bad that the clothes on our backs cost more than the value of the cheques we delivered. Even taking a taxi home that day ate into our conscience. We thought to ourselves, this is unreal. Under such living conditions, how does one motivate oneself to wake up in the morning; or to have hope and face challenges with zest? To be honest, we wondered how we were going to be able to help improve their lives, or make any form of impact.

In our subsequent visits, we focused on getting to know the beneficiary families better. One of the earliest revelations we learnt was that the families were just comforted to have someone listen to the stories of their lives. In the beginning, all we could offer was a listening ear and ourselves as sounding boards for them to discuss options and possibilities. One thing in common these families had, we came to realize, was a general sense of helplessness. They needed assistance, they needed to reach out, but they did not know how or who to turn to. They were also intimidated by bureaucracy, and were almost resigned to the belief that their lives would not get better and that they did not deserve a better existence. To make things worse, they seemed to be plagued with problems after problems, which are usually magnified by financial difficulties; and that, in turn, compounded their sense of despair.

With time, we earned their trust and gradually saw ways in which we could step in to help. We saw opportunities for us to assist in non-financial means, such as providing suggestions and ideas on how to better their financial positions, helping with legal procedures and bureaucratic processes (which can be a huge pain); or in some instances, helping them seek additional financial assistance for unexpected crises. Some of these efforts produced positive results, which encouraged and motivated us. It felt good for us to be able to do something for them. Involving the families in every step of the way also empowered them and made them realize that it is possible to be in control. On the other hand, the families taught us valuable lessons in humility and determination. When it does not work the first time, you keep trying.

Today, we look back at our journey with the two families so far, and we are surprised that a year has passed. In this society that tends to exemplify the successful and disregard the weak, we are glad that we took some time to extend a helping hand and to allow others to show us the intricacies and vulnerabilities of our existence – how we all depend on one another, and how our lives are intertwined. It would be far fetched to say we changed their lives for the better, but I hope that our company brought them some joy, or just a few breaths of fresh air.

One of the highlights for me personally, was when one of the families asked us if we’d continue to see them after the end of the program.

Why, I asked. He replied softly, “It’s fine if you don’t bring anymore cheques. It’s just nice to have you as friends.”

ofCompassionHouseBRMC Preaching Point at Bukit Batok - BBPP Blessed in Giving — Bukit Batok PreachingPoint’s Visit to Christalite Methodist Home

Residents of Christalite Methodist Home – a home for the destitute, often look forward to their weekends as it means visitors bringing gifts, food, and warm company. But on Dec 17, Bukit Batok Preaching Point wanted to bring all these to them and more – the good news of Jesus Christ. Forty-seven people, ranging from children to adults, took part in the visit that Saturday. All were tasked with reaching out; some were asked to serve food, while others presented carols that they had practised for three months. The event was held entirely in a large hall and there were around 200 residents, aged from the 40s to the 70s. The highlight that day was the carols. One Chinese song, There Is A Gift, which speaks about the gift of God that is freely given to all was especially touching.

17 December 2011By David Lim

Twenty-four carolers sing “There Is A Gift” on stage during their presentation.

Said Catherine, a Preaching Point staff who took part with her daughter, Ivy, “As I looked at them while we were singing, I didn’t know if they realised that the best gift we brought was the Lord Jesus Christ. But I firmly believe that God’s Sprit could lead them to understand our actions and His love that we were trying to convey,” she added. Ivy, 12, said, “When we sang the carols, I really wished that the people listening would be touched and saved.” The residents also loved the high tea we catered.

A resident named Sandy, told me, “I’m very glad to see you all here and to receive so many gifts.” She explained that the Home regularly gets similar visits from organisations and showed me a pack containing items such as instant coffee powder, sweets and biscuits that she had received. She shared that she used to live with her brother but moved into the Home three years ago. She found faith in Jesus and has a mother-and-daughter pair whom she regards as her best friends. A number of other residents I spoke to also said they enjoyed what we had prepared for them.

While it was rewarding to see our efforts bringing joy to the residents, we got to taste the truth of our Lord’s words, that “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” What we received wasn’t material or quantifiable but a valuable experience that trained us in selflessness. For example, this initiative marked a milestone in the faith journey of many, including me, who went that day. It was the first time we took part in community service, reaching out to people, as a Body of believers. That day, we represented Jesus in the Home – being His face and hands and feet, and showing up in the lives of the residents on His behalf. We are certainly never alone when it comes to the act of sharing the Gospel. We were humbled by the experience and caught a glimpse of our Father’s heartbeat for the poor and the lost.

BRMC Preaching Point at Bukit Batok - BBPP Blessed in Giving — Bukit Batok PreachingPoint’s Visit to Christalite Methodist Home17 December 2011

Catherine said, “I prayed that whatever I did would be pleasing to God. I also asked Him to open their eyes to see Him and His love.” She added that while serving, she smelled urine and realised that the elderly residents faced many difficulties in living. Some also have not seen their children in a long time and lamented that in their conversations with us.

Said Catherine, “It made me see the importance of reaching out to the resident pre-believers, so that they will have God’s comfort in their old age.” She added, “When we were leaving, I felt a burden in my heart because, after we leave, who will lead them to God?”

That captured the most significant reminder for us: the harvest is indeed plentiful but the labourers are few. There are still many in our homeland who have not heard the Gospel and we have a fertile place to start.

And what is amazing and encouraging is that planting the seeds can be a very enjoyable experience, especially if we do it together.

Forty-seven Bukit Batok Preaching Point followers of Christ spread among the residents, encouraging them to mimic some hand actions during a game.

Last Christmas was a special one for Bukit Batok Preaching Point, also known as Oasis, on three counts. Firstly, we celebrated Christmas on a Sunday for the first time since Oasis’ birth (2006). Next, expecting a big turnout for our evangelistic service, we borrowed the facilities of Agape Methodist Church, in Taman Jurong, to be our venue. Lastly, we held a mini Christmas Carnival right after church. The service was not unlike any other except for a few highlights: a choir presentation midway, a hyperactive guest preacher – Mr David Leong, executive director of the Scripture Union – and an altar call at the end.

About 180 people came. Apart from our regular congregation members numbering about 80 people, the rest were guests – families whom we had been reaching out through various programmes such as Praise Kidz, Parents Fellowship, and other outreach events, as well as our friends and relatives. Praise God – 7, including 3 children went forward to receive our Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord! An evangelistic service followed by a carnival, made for a very tiring Christmas Day for most, but it also meant receiving a double portion of joy for some, especially those who were serving.

Said Dung (pronounced Zung), a long-time Vietnamese in our community who was involved in a choir presentation and worship, “I felt honoured to be able to participate in the whole event. It was the very first time, in my years as a believer, that I was a part of such a thorough and dedicated effort to be God’s partner in ministry.”

Another member, Timothy, who transferred his membership to Oasis only months before, added, “It was very beautiful and wonderful to see the church serving the Lord joyfully together.”

Much was given into making that Christmas Day a memorable one for our guests. For example, choir practices began weekly from as early as October and almost every member of the congregation was mobilised to help prepare carnival games, pack and distribute goodie bags, serve as ushers and befrienders, and serve food to all.

Not everyone was comfortable with their given roles initially but all took a step of faith to be an instrument of the Lord’s. Said Dorothy, the key coordinator behind the choir, “Raising a choir was definitely not my Jerusalem. Nevertheless, I took up Pastor’s challenge, from choosing, surfing to find the score, then purchasing the songs from the Internet, to helping all of us come together to put up something presentable.” “The indisputable team effort (I saw) was testament to the Lord being able to use the little but all that was dedicated to Him, to bless the multitude,” she added.

Each got to drink from the Well in their own special way that day, through the experiences they had, especially for the sheep that were lost but found! Dung said, “I felt like everyone could feel like a small child that day, invited to the Father’s embrace to rest in His love and hope in His mercy. As the Father said lovingly, ’So you would come’, the children really came running to Him at the altar!”

Smiles were abounding among the children during the carnival action.

“What do you think is the goal of a caregiver?” – That was the question asked in the workshop.

Apart from helping the needy families in a tangible way, such as bringing the financial assistance cheques to them once a month, a caregiver may also have the opportunity to help in meeting their spiritual needs and/or guiding them to better manage their situation, be it financial, emotional or physical.

With the goal of a caregiver in mind, a workshop was organized to equip our caregivers. We had about 33 participants. Representatives from the two preaching points were also present.

Our Church Counsellor, Mrs Vivian Navaratnam, conducted the workshop with much exuberance as she brought in her rich experiences in the field of social work and counselling. One of the highlights of the workshop sessions is on helping the person we care for to improve their situation through change in their thinking and emotions.

The session was wrapped up with a case study, and the recognition that God is our Real Change Agent and the caregiving ministry is a ministry in partnership with our God.

The participants found the workshop to be very useful. Due to the encouraging response, Parts 2 & 3 will be planned for 2012. Look out for these!

We thank God, who is wonderful in counsel and magnificent in wisdom, for this enriching worshop!

This event was well attended by families under BRMC’s care, our church members and helpers.

We thank God for providing us the space to cater for the 200 plus people at Oldham Hall!

God has always been faithful – He opened the way for veteran MediaCorp actor, Mr Chew Chor Meng, to be the guest speaker to share his testimony with all of us that day.

With simplicity and sincerity, he shared about his life before knowing Christ, his devastating discovery of his muscular dystrophy illness, his struggles, and the turning point of being a man of ‘no hope’ to a man of great hope, who, at last, was filled with tremendous joy to find strength, healing and hope in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Undoubtedly, his sharing added depth and meaning to the theme of the event, “A Life of Hope”. The audience listened attentively throughout the sharing. We prayed that this testimony of God’s servant was sown in hearts of good soil and in God’s due time, He would bring about a great harvest.

We were also blessed with the partnership of the Mandarin Service members who took care of the ‘praise and sing’ worship and the PA system, the befrienders and caregivers who played hosts to our needy families, and a church member who sponsored certain part of the dinner buffet.

We ended the event with a good dinner fellowship and the distribution of mooncakes to our adopted families.

Please pray that this message of Hope will continue to illumine the hearts and minds of those who may be going through difficult time so as to bring encouragement to them that our God is able to meet their needs - our God is a God of Hope who answers prayers!

Glory to Christ, our Saviour!

BRMC Outreach & Social Concerns MinistryChristmas Party

It was the joyous time of the year again – a season of Love & Sharing!

We had about 250 people celebrating Christmas together – our BRMC’s adopted families, Mandarin Service Congregation choir, YAM Singing Buddies, caregivers, befrienders and OSC committee members. What a big wonderful party!

The party started off with the Mandarin Service Congregation choir delivering the evergreen Christmas carols with gusto, adding much to the festive atmosphere of love, peace and joy – Not forgetting, they had their Santa caps on too!

This was followed by Chairman Timothy Kho’s Welcome Speech. Without much ado, we had our young and vibrant YAM buddies singing “We Are The Reason” in English and Mandarin, and “Come On, and Celebrate”. What beautiful singing and meaningful lyrics to express the Greatest Gift of our lives!

The highlight of the event was none other than The Message. Rev Daniel Terence Yeo shared the good news of God’s love as expressed in the miraculous birth of our Lord Jesus Christ – the Hope of all Mankind. Indeed, the audience had been blessed to have the opportunity to hear the Greatest Love Story of All Time.

Dinner was served after the message – a colourful spread of ‘Christmasy’ dishes! Thanks to our Event Committee members, Mrs Carol Tan and Mrs Yvette Lee, for their careful selection.

We were privileged to have the Lindy Hop Ensemble performing an item while the guests were having their dinner much to the guests’ delight.

The party ended with a gift bag for every adopted family – voucher, Christmas Story Book, biscuits and chocolates donated by The Cocoa Trees, and a husband-&-wife church member.

A big Thank You to all who have helped out in one way or another – we truly appreciate your participation and support!

We want to praise and thank God as we remember His immeasurable love for us all!

On 3 and 10 January, Bishop Dr Robert Solomon taught from the book of Daniel to a large group of participants, ravenous in the Spirit and yearning to know more about how they can be more faithful, humble and effective witnesses for the Lord in evangelism and ministry. Participants were able to glean many contemporary applications for Christian discipleship in the 2 sessions and we feature here testimonies of the teaching including a shot of all the participants on one of the nights.

I always thought the book of Daniel was about him being saved by God when he was thrown into the lions’ den! “I always thought the book of Daniel was only about him being saved by God when he was thrown into the lions’ den!

Then the two sessions on the study of Daniel, made me realize that there is more to that.

Bishop Solomon gave us the historical background and chronology of events which were interesting and informative.

His notes and explanation make it easier to understand all those visions that were mentioned. From the book of Daniel, I have learnt to obey and be faithful to God in all circumstances.“ By Rosslyn Kwok

“Bishop Solomon’s talk on the book of Daniel was very helpful indeed!

I wish it could be longer than that because there’s so many things to know.

I wouldn’t mind attending it again because it was a very interesting subject!” By Jennifer Wee

“The book of Daniel is easy reading. Only 12 chapters. That’s what I thought. However, I was very surprised when Bishop Solomon gave the 2-night talk.

He gave us the historical background and chronology of events. His analogies, colourful description and pictorial explanation make it easier to understand all those dreams that were mentioned especially the prophetic one by Daniel.

From Bishop Solomon’s emphasis I learned how a person away from his own kind, can and should still hold steadfastly to his faith.

On a lighter side he also comforted us that it is ok if we find some passages we do not understand because there are times he does come across difficult passages too!” By Charlie Kwok

“Insightful and deep- This is what describes the seminar conducted over two Tuesday nights organised by Trek Thru the Bible as Bishop Robert Solomon took on the challenging book of Daniel where very few dare to teach. The book of Daniel is difficult because the reader must not only understand the rich historical and cultural context of Daniel’s day but be also able to interpret and understand the visions shown to Daniel. Attendees of the talk were rewarded as Bishop Robert Solomon masterfully navigated through the overarching themes in the Book of Daniel beginning where Daniel and his friends arrived in Babylon, showing how the visions of Daniel were fulfilled through past historical kingdoms of Babylon, Medo-Persia and Greece in Asia Minor and climaxed at the end of times dovetailing with the Book of Revelation.” By Bryan Hoo

BRMC Discipleship & Nurture Ministry (D&N)

21 February 2012

On the evening of 21 February, more than 30 people attended ‘Just Worship,’ a one evening session of teaching by Rev Dr Daniel Koh, a full time lecturer at Trinity Theological College on Methodism and Christian Ethics. The session began with the singing of hymns led by BRMC LMS Low Kee Hong. We present for you here avid testimonies from the participants:

“I had come hoping to hear more about worshipping God, but Rev Daniel Koh’s talk on Just Worship was anything but.... !! However, I did learn that true worship is more than just having great music and songs of praise, more than just having lots of worshippers and sitting in cool comfort, and listening to God’s Word from distinguished preachers. True worshippers must be consistent in our behaviour, and strive to be Christ-like whether in or out of church, at all times...and that we must learn to care for the least, the last and the lost...and speak-up against the oppressors and corruptors in our society, just like the Lord. “ By Foo Siang Ngee

‘From the book of Amos, I learnt that if a person truly worships God, he must regard others the way God sees them. We are encouraged to have an attitude that God is just and when we attend to the things and people He cares, it is a witness that worship is from our hearts.’ By Soon Chian Chian

“We were pleasantly surprised as we had expected the talk to be heavy on LITURGY. But it turned out to be enlightening, especially the stress on Christian ethics. We will reread the Book of Amos in that spirit to hear God’s voice afresh.” Solus Christus! By Weng Yee & Moses Goh

ofHouseBreadTrends that distract, disrupt and destroy

BRMC Discipleship & Nurture Ministry (D&N)

Season 2By Philip Poh (LMS)

In this series in October/November 2011, we reviewed a number of undesirable behavioural trends that are not just “in the world”, but also commonplace amongst believers.

With the Wesleyan Quadrilateral as framework to structure our thinking, and 2 Timothy 3:2-5, 8 as Scriptural basis, we examined the trends under the headers: “lovers of themselves”, “without love” and “lovers of pleasures”.

I advocated that such trends arise when we “lose the plot” that “Man is created in the image of God”. Our understanding of “human dignity” becomes blurred and we ask bewilderedly “whatever happened to grace?” Though we are believers of the Triune God, our focus of “the church as the body of Christ in the world” is skewed and our spiritual lives are “running on empty” and not “in spirit and in truth”.

Over the 4 sessions, we spent time with crayons and colour pencils to visualize our understanding of the image of God and listened to songs from current music celebrities: Bruno Mars, Eminem (with Rihanna) and Taio. We tackled issues as “anger”, “swearing in public” and “ranting”. We question our motives in “attention seeking” and “obsessions”, and whether we are already demonstrating this in our focus on “service in church” and “fuzzy worship”.

“…we need to know the fundamental fact…something so core, so essential and to ingrained this knowledge and wisdom…EACH IS CREATED IN THE IMAGE OF GOD! [It is the basis] of all creations...This is something by God’s grace, mercy and love…”

V C Wong [right]

“one thing that deeply impressed me was the idea that anger is holy, and that anger translates to sin only because we do not maintain control…[and] we have become de-sensitized to exclamations, swear words and ranting…” Amelia Tan [far left]

“Some of the refreshing notions I took back include – anger is sacred, there is righteous anger…attending services is not about our opinion of the worship team or the sermon…but rather going with a heart to worship God…” Fenella Teng [left]

Season 3 “You are not perfect, you know” was in March 2012: refreshing our understanding of SIN, FORGIVENESS and GOOD WORKS.

Season 4 “The robe, the ring and the feast” is coming up in October 2012.

Season 2 : Amazed and bewildered by how people behave nowadays?

Worship & Music Ministry Retreat 2012 @ Changi Village HotelBRMC Worship and Music Ministry

6-7 January 2012

Every year, members of Worship & Music Ministry in BRMC would gather together for a time of contemplation and seeking God to keep the flame burning in our hearts to continue serving the Lord using every gifting and talent He has bestowed upon us. We recognized that as we serve in this ministry, everyone is vulnerable against the work of the evil one that keeps on trying to deceive and stop us from doing our best and giving all glory to God alone. Many of us have been serving for years and the need to encourage one and all is our utmost concern to make this ministry even stronger to continue building up the Kingdom of God, thus having a retreat like this will give us an opportunity to minister to one another.

In this retreat, there was an emphasis to dig in deeper to the Word of God to keep our spiritual standing before God even stronger. Worship is not only about beautiful songs or making a good ‘worship sets’ to be played and sung each Sunday Service. Each song will have a new revelation even to the worship team if God’s Word inspired every lyrics and worshippers are united in proclaiming God’s greatness through their joyful singing. We are admonished to take our ‘daily bread’ even as Jesus Himself who is the Bread of Life, taught us how to pray in Luke 11:3 “Give us this day our daily bread.”

The second day was really a blessing to all of us, as our replacement speaker Mr Ian Poulier, shared the Word of God about “Flowing Into The River Of God”. Our invited speaker Rev Stephen Goh could not make it to join us as he was admitted to hospital a day before our retreat. We believe that God sent us the right person to give us the right message so that everyone could be refreshed and be ministered by His marvelous presence. The message was clear, that God would want us to go even ‘waist deep’ into His river so that we could flow with Him.

“My first time to such retreat. It’s been a blessing to be able to spend time in fellowship and learning with other members of the church. Knowing that many others out there are also facing similar struggles, gives me comfort and support that God would provide. If there was more time for fellowship, it would help as the sharing allows for both spiritual and actual support. Looking forward for the next ministry retreat.” From a participant.

Blessings each other through God’s WordBRMC Creative Arts Ministry (CAM)

21 Februaary 2012

It was at a very ordinary Scripture in Dance’s weekly Tuesday night meeting on 21 Feb, 2012.

A sister led us in a corporate devotion that evening. Her theme was “Worshipping God in Spirit and In Truth.” It was to be followed by praying for SD’s specific needs and BRMC’s corporate needs.

By God’s grace, His purpose and the anointing of the hour led us differently. We joyfully embraced the spiritual prompting though each one was jittering with fear! Why? You may wonder. please read on....

For a 2nd sister had felt strongly that tonight we should pray blessings into each other’s life. A third sister also received prompting that each prayer of blessing should be based on God’s Word of Truth.

As we obeyed, the Holy Spirit quietened our hearts. In groups of 4, each of us had been challenged to look prayerfully at the person sitting on our right and seek God for a verse in season for the time of his/her need.

Under the strong anointing of the Holy Spirit, the reverent fear of God was evident. Yet, each one present had so much love flowing from the bottom of our hearts. Honestly, we desired to bless the buddy sitting on our right, in spirit and in truth!

We are thankful that God in His grace, led us to pray by faith in Christ Jesus, with a supernatural ability: it was in the spirit of the hour and in the truth of love! Each of us boldly stepped into that prophetic anointing and began to declare a bible verse and claimed it with all our heart, mind, spirit and soul. We prayed and we prayed and we prayed. Oh, how beautiful was that precious moment when we worshipped God with our prayer of blessing for someone.

Each SD meeting begins with a time of devotion and prayer

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:18).

God has anointed our faith and brought each of us into that place of freedom in the Spirit: to release blessing and to be blessed too. Evidence of tears of joy and God’s shalom prevailed. The river of life has been released to renew and strengthen us. We sensed love, healing, unity and spiritual revival. What an amazing outpouring of the Holy Spirit! God met our deepest need first and we continued with our dance practice in “cloud nine mood” thereafter. Praise the Lord!

The resonance of that “Burning-Bush” encounter has etched deep into each of our soul that night. Humbly we choose to bear witness and testify to God’s glory! Amen.

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of him” (1 John 5:14-15).

My group had a wonderful prayer experience. Everyone was so amazed and ministered that the Word and blessings we received were “just right” for us at this time. With thanksgiving, we received God’s love, healing, hope and assurance. Praise the Lord.

By Yvonne Foo

Indeed the Spirit of the Living God, His banner of love and His gracious favor is upon all in SD. GOD is Spirit & He desires true worshippers coming to worship Him in spirit & in truth. As I meditated upon the Word of God, I realized afresh that Jesus is the only way, the truth & the life. No one can come to Father unless through Him. Holy Father, thank You for Your reminder that comes from the Holy Spirit, helping us to reflect on Your goodness to us in SD. Giving us understanding and filling us with Your Spirit. Jesus, thank You for preparing the way in SD for all to mature in Your Word through devotion by bringing us to a higher level of understanding, so that Your truth can come alive through our movement and in our dance. Holy Spirit, come and lead us to develop the fruit of the spirit in our lives. Cause us to pray unceasingly for ladies in SD that we may develop a bond in love, peace, joy & unity, while our Chairoperson Mrs Irene Tan takes a short break to rest in the Lord. Thank You Yeshua, that SD can always come to Father in spirit & in truth to worship. Amen & amen.

An Update from the 8.30am ChoirBRMC 8.30am Sanctuary Choir

“And now, yet another update from the 8.30am Sanctuary Choir”

“My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music.Awake my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.”

Psalm 57:7-8 (NIV)

It was a birthday party for one of the senior Choir members, and who is still with us whenever possible. The relatives and loved ones of this dear lady, however, extended their invitation to the Choir to join the celebrations. And, thus, our party on 21 October also became an opportunity for us to get together for fellowship and celebrations.

Mdm Juanita Co blowing out the candlesof her birthday cake

It was the close of yet another Liturgical year and we wanted to praise God for how He has blessed us. To mark the occasion, we decided to reproduce the book of short songs and choruses called CLIFF CHORUSES. The book is no longer in print (It’s that old!) There were howls of delight when the books were distributed. Many in the Choir have fond memories of those songs, sung way back during Sunday Schools and Youth Fellowships.

50 • uphill & beyond • January to April 2012

What was most poignant that night was the singing of the hymn GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS. Most of us remembered the verses by heart. What a heart-felt joy it was when we sang with gusto. It was truly reflective of how we felt about all that we have gone through. And we know with conviction that God will continue to show His faithfulness in the days ahead.

“A personal insight on music in worship”

As I continue to serve God through the ministry of this Choir, I search for insights and understanding of what that ministry is. I know it’s not the music per se. In fact, the music that we sing and present has no significance if it is not dove-tailed into the features of the worship services and aligned to the messages God’s servants share over the pulpit.

Let me share with you (again) the one book which I have found very helpful in my search for significance:

And after a sumptuous buffet dinner, we sang. Mixed with requests for songs from the CLIFF CHORUSES, there were our favourite hymns and our “presents” in song for the birthday lady.

WORSHIP: A PRACTICAL GUIDEJeffrey A. Truscott

(Armour Publishing, 2011, 266pp)

Previously, I did say that the “bite-sized” chapters of this book are “good handles for meaningful discussions for individuals and small groups who are interested to examine the issues behind Christian worship.” But what are these issues? Let me highlight 3:

“Should the word “liturgy” be a turn off?”“Which worship style is ‘better’: hymns or praise and worship?”

“Are the songs from the West (written and sung in English) the only way to worship God?”

Truscott addresses and answers these questions and a whole lot more. For now, the short answer is that they are secondary issues. He reminds us that the primary issue in Christian worship is God for who He is and what He has done. He invites us to look at ritual, culture, music and time through Christian lenses. In so doing, we form our spiritual identity as Christians, more specifically as Asian Christians.

Some thoughts by Vivienne Soh

GYM (Glowing Years Ministry) helps us to glow. Since I started attending the fellowship gatherings regularly a few years ago, I have made many new friends, heard inspiring testimonies and messages, and enjoyed attending several outings with the members. Led by the dynamic energy of the GYM Vice-chairman, Susan Tong, GYM has grown. The Mellowtones choir has presented beautiful praises at all three services at the BRMC Sanctuary, and connected us with other Christian churches in Penang, Johor Bahru, and Malacca. We are recognized by our bright T-shirts and cheerful smiles!

Anyone who is 45 years and over can join GYM. At present, all of us are less than 100 years young. Realistically, however, accidents or deteriorating health can happen unexpectedly to any of us any time. GYM has a big heart. The small steps that the committee members and others have taken to show their love and concern for others have gone a long way to cheer a sick person or someone unable to attend church or social meetings for some reason.

Recently I needed to undergo total hip-replacement surgery. I was cheered by phone calls, visits, and even gifts from GYM.

If you believe that Christian fellowship is an important part of your Christian walk with the Lord, you will enjoy being a part of this fun and caring group of people. God bless GYM!

The BRMC Seniors Fellowship, known as The Glowing Years Ministry are an active and vibrant group that meet regularly for Bible Study, Social Get-Togethers, Visitations (Heart For Our Own), Excursions (local and overseas) and for Choir (GYM Mellow Tones). Here are 2 reports from its members, Mdm Vivienne Soh and Dr Png Poh Seng about the exciting programmes that GYM has organized which they have personally been blessed to participate in. In addition we feature here lovely pictures of GYMers in fellowship, fun and fervour for the Lord during the many events that have taken place during Christmas 2011 and the recent trip to Malacca.

I have been attending the monthly GYM functions for more than a year. At the beginning of each session, we sing hymns, after which a speaker (who could be a prominent GYM member) will give a short Christian message to enlighten those present and strengthen their faith.

There will then follow songs of yesteryear and an interval when everyone can enjoy the food and drinks provided. Finally, those who love to dance or others who want to learn dancing can enjoy themselves doing line dancing.
