The 1953 Puerto Rican film “Los Peloteros” is considered a classic of Puerto Rican film history.It was directed by Jack Delano. The film’s music was also composed by Delano. “Los Peloteros” was filmed in Comerío, Puerto Rico. It was shot using real children from the town.

Jack Delano is considered the most important photographer who documented life in Puerto Rico in the 1940’s. However, Jack Delano was not Puerto Rican, he was born in Ukraine in 1914. He was sent to Puerto Rico in the 1940’s as part of his work for the Farm Security Administration.

Delano’s family emigrated to the United States in 1923. When he was a young man, he was awarded a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of fine arts where he studied graphic arts, photography, and music.

When he started working for the Farm Security Administration, he was impressed with the work of other talented photographers like Dorothea Lange and Gordon Parks. The social and working conditions of the people of the USA, Puerto Rico and the Virgin islands were documented through his pictures.

Delano was so fascinated by Puerto Rico, that he moved to the island with his wife, Irene, in 1946. The couple became friends of Luis Muñoz Marín, the governor of Puerto Rico at the time, and Pablo Casals.

In 1949 the Puerto Rico Division of Community Education was created. Seven films were produced and directed by Delano. The films’ music was also composed by the artist. In 1957 he was appointed director of WIPR television.

Many books about Puerto were illustrated by Jack Delano. During his lifeon the island, he demonstrated his love for us through the music, films, andphotographs he was inspired to create. The following photographs were taken by Delano in the 1940’s.
