New Horizons

To enable the business to expand and fulfil increasing demand in the south of the country, the decision was taken to open a second warehouse facility in Kempston, Bedford. With quick and easy access to the M1 and A1 motorways, the 10,000 sq. ft. facility was the perfect setting from which to meet new and existing customer orders within agreed service levels. From buying the building in November 2014 to trading took seven months.

Meeting the Challenges

Key to the success of the project was obtaining a single view of stock which could be managed centrally from the Shipley office but fulfilled from either site. Although a considerable investment, the Bedford site is still relatively small in comparison to head office. Therefore there is little room to store bulk and so the business is reliant on accurate information to forecast stock replenishment in an agile fashion. Staff were trained by Maginus and picked the system up quickly.

Simon Mettrick, Operations Director at Jack Pennington Ltd, said: “Maginus is fundamental to the success of our business. Everyone in the organisation uses it and it has been instrumental in helping us to scale and grow.”

Mettrick continued: “From the moment we took the decision to open the Bedford branch, Maginus has been with us every step of the way, offering consultancy and advice on important issues during the transition to a two site operation. Implementation of the system and training staff has been seamless and we have absolute confidence in our real-time stock availability meaning we can fulfil customer orders around the country from two sites.”

Results & Vision

The Bedford warehouse now accounts for 29% of the entire group turnover, which has been achieved in just 13 months. The facility has enabled Jack Pennington Ltd to increase its customer base in the south of the country and take advantage of new infrastructure and construction projects whilst maintaining operational efficiencies.
