After a fun summer of Slot Mini-Marathons, the popular free Dreamcatcher’s Club® Slot Tournaments return starting September 15.

New Breakfast & Brunch hours at Raging River

Spend the weekend exploring the Gold Country and discover some of Amador County’s most talented artists. On Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, you can wander at your own pace through working studios and visit with groups of artists who have joined together so you can see a variety of media and styles in one place. There is no admission charge.

This year’s Open Studio Tour will include such well-known artists as Sabina Turner, Jeanne Vodden, Sharon Galligan with paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolor; the wonderful, whimsical toons of Loretta Armstrong; watercolor collages by Lynn Slade; mixed media masks and constructions by Lorra Lee Rose and Andy Byrne; and ceramics by Nomi Schwarzschild.

You will also find fiber artists, photographers, artists working in pastel and pencil, and more. Enjoy demonstrations, ask questions, learn about the artists’ inspirations and processes, view their latest works, and perhaps purchase a treasure of your own.

An absolute must see is the Artist’s Raffle site at the Rollingwood Clubhouse in Jackson. All the participating artists have donated an artwork to the raffle as well as some wonderful gift certificates from local businesses.

Raffle tickets are $1 each, or 6 for $5 and each raffle item has its own ticket box. Just drop your ticket in the box next to the artwork you are interested in winning. The drawing will take place at 3 p.m. on September 20 and you need not be present to win.

All proceeds support the Amador County Artist Association’s Scholarship Fund and Annual Student Art Show.

A visit to Amador County isn’t complete without a stop by Indian Grinding Rocks State Historic Park and the Chaw’se Regional Indian Museum.

The park was created in 1968 and preserves a great outcropping of marbleized limestone with some 1,185 mortar holes, the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America.

The museum features a variety of exhibits and an outstanding collection of Sierra Nevada Indian artifacts. A Miwuk village complete with a ceremonial roundhouse has been reconstructed in the middle of the small valley.

The museum is designed to reflect the architecture of the traditional roundhouse. Exhibited in this two-story museum are outstanding examples of the technology and crafts of the Miwuk and other Sierra Nevada native American groups.

As a regional Indian museum, the collection at Chaw’se includes Northern, Central and Southern Miwuk, Maidu, Konkow, Monache, Nisenan, Tubatulabal, Washo, and Foothill Yokuts. Examples of basketry, feather regalia, jewelry, arrowpoints, and other tools are on display.

Several times a year ceremonies are held in the hun’ge (roundhouse) by local Native Americans.

Many Indian families gather at the park on the weekend following the fourth Friday in September for the annual acorn gathering season ceremonies known simply as Big Time. This year’s event is

Native American art at Chaw’se

The annual Chaw’se Invitational Art Show featuring traditional and contemporary art by California Indian artists will be held in the Regional Indian Museum at Indian Grinding Rocks State Historic Park weekends from August 29 through Big Time September 26 & 27.

The show opens on Saturday, August 29 with a 4 p.m. reception, which is open to the public and will be attended by the artists.

The art show committee is looking forward to a number of youth artists at this year’s show, according to event Coordinator Roger Clinkenbeard. Prizes will be awarded to the best two and three dimensional art work. Winners will be announced at the reception.

The reception will be followed by dancing in the roundhouse by the Miwok Cultural Dancers of Ione.

The museum is open weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call 209-296-7488.

Ron Housek says he’s enjoyed every job he’s had at Jackson Rancheria, but being a Valet “is my favorite. It’s a lot more fun. We can kid around with the guests, keep it friendly and light hearted. Our guests are our gold and they love being treated like family. People come back because of the way they are treated.”

Ron had a varied career before joining Jackson Rancheria. Born in Redwood City, he was raised in San Mateo and Menlo Park and attended Woodside High School.

After high school he spent six years in the Navy, including a year in Iceland followed by work with a construction battalion in California, Spain, and Puerto Rico.

After the Navy, he returned to Santa Cruz and worked a variety of jobs, including working for a sign painter, Goodwill Industries, a hotel and conference center, and a tortilla chips place.

In 1990 he and his wife moved to Oregon for four years where he worked in newspaper delivery and for a messenger service.

After moving back to California, Ron delivered furniture and appliances, spent six years contracting carriers for the Alameda Newspaper Group, managed a public storage facility, and worked for a freight company. He’s a hard working man of many talents.

In 2001 he moved to this area and a short time later began his career at Jackson Rancheria. Ron worked almost two years in Security before transferring to Hotel Valet for three years and then to Casino Valet, where he has been ever since.

Despite his last name (his step-father’s), Ron is proud to be of Scottish heritage, the Scottish Highlands Wilson clan, and enjoys all things Scottish. Most of his house is decorated in Scottish themes and he can tell you family tales going back to the 1400’s.

Every year during the heart of the grape harvest in the world famous Shenandoah Valley, the wineries and vineyards open their doors for a two-day celebration of wine and all things related.

This year’s Big Crush Harvest Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Some 30 members of Amador Vintners will be serving up great wine, food, music, and other harvest festivities amid the scenic beauty of Amador Wine Country.

Fiddletown’s Fiddlers’ Jam & Contest

On Saturday, September 19, fiddlers from near and far will gather for Fiddletown’s 17th Annual Fiddlers’ Jam and Contest.

The main street in Fiddletown will be closed and the entire town will become a stage to some of the best fiddlin’ music around.

Admission to the event is free. A free shuttle is provided to and from the parking area. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Musician sign-ups begin at 9 a.m.

Folsom Gourd & Arts Festival

The 15th annual Folsom Gourd & Arts Festival will be held at Folsom City Park on Saturday and Sunday, September 26-27, in Folsom City Park.

Over 150 artists will offer their exquisite artwork during this two day event. The festival will include entertainment, food, classes and demonstrations by well-known artists teaching gourd art techniques including cutting, dying, and embellishing gourds.

This year’s festival features great music, food and art. Proceeds from the event provide an annual arts scholarship from the Folsom Patrons of the Arts.
