Last November Judith and I had an
invitation to the launch of the Mike
Hawthorn book (where I bought
the signed copy we presented to
Roger in December) where we
learned of the planned memorial
service and parade of cars. The
plan, after the memorial service,
was to hold a parade of cars either
owned or driven by him together
with as many as possible (mainly
Jaguars) of his era. The parade
was to drive three laps of Farn-
ham's town centre and then to
drive westwards to the cemetery on
the outskirts of Farnham for a brief
service and wreath-laying at
Mike's grave. Following this,
all parade participants were invited
to partake in refreshments at Swain
and Jones, the Farnham Jaguar
Dealer.
Early in January, I was asked to
enter our Mark Nine in the parade
and to take some VIP passen-
gers. Subsequently, Peter Craker
was asked to bring along his fine
1957 Mark One, which he did - all
the way from Deal - braving some-
what dodgy weather to do so.
The parade was originally esti-
mated to be fairly low key, but in-
terest rapidly increased with the
press (both local and national),
local councillors and owners of
many historic 1930s to 1950s cars
showing great willingness to take
part. In the event there
were approaching 100 cars in the
parade including Ferrari and Coo-
per Formula 1 cars that he had
driven, various other cars that he
had owned, cars from the JDHT (C
types, D types and the Queen
Mother's Mark VII - IX to name a
few), Nigel Webb's faithful rec-
reation of the Mark 1 in which he
crashed and numerous classic cars
of the era including Peter's and
ours. We had three passengers,
including the lady Mayor of Farn-
ham and her daughter. Amongst
the celebrity drivers were Damon
Hill and Stirling Moss.
All in all, a memorable afternoon
which was reported both in the
local press and BBC South. There
are videos and pictures on the
Mike-Hawthorn Tribute website
which is maintained by Tony Bai-
ley, one of the co-authors of the
recently-launched book. The pho-
tos on the front cover include my
MK IX, Pete Craker’s MK I and
one of the floral tributes at the
cemetery.

NO POINTS DEDUCTED, !! This interesting item arrived in the Editors mailbox
This is how points get added to your licence:-
If you get a fixed penalty notice through the post, which also caries penalty points, the
computer system first sends you a demand for the cash and then sends a demand for the
return of your licence for endorsement only when the fine has been paid. It cannot han-
dle the endorsement, points and payment at the same time.
If you overpay the fixed penalty by - say - £1, the computer must issue and send a refund
cheque for the overpayment and everything stops until you cash the cheque ----DON’T!
You have paid the fine and responded properly to every request and, as there is no hu-
man intervention, the system will leave you alone because it needs to conclude the finan-
cial side before moving on to licence and points.
Result or what?

You should have by now received
your copy of our 2009 calendar of
events, once again kindly sponsored
and sent out by Lancaster’s
Sevenoaks. I was sorry to hear that
the speaker arranged for the February
club night, David Render was unable
to attend having just come out of hos-
pital with a “Pace Maker” fitted and
not being able to drive for six
months, hopefully we will be able to
re-arrange his talk for later in the
year.
March club night features Ian Cool-
ing who is going to talk about
“Jaguar Automobilia” and Ian has
said that he will gladly talk about and
value any Jaguar related items, you
care to bring along, so let’s see if we
can find something interesting for
him to look at in your collections.
Penny Booth mentioned that the
phone number for her in last months
Kentishman for the “Spring Lunch”
was incorrect, the right number is
01795 880544. Penny says that she
has reached the venues limit of sixty
people for the spring lunch and is
starting a wait list, if you have put
your name down for “The Harty
Ferry Inn” can you please make sure
you send her your payment as soon
as possible if you have not already
done so.
There is an extra event not in the Cal-
endar on Monday 4th May the day
after Magnificent Motors Eastbourne,
it is the Swale Vehicle enthusiasts
show on the Isle of Sheppey, we have
been allocated a limited number of
places (6-8) and if you want to go
please contact Vic Booth - on the
number mentioned earlier - who has
the booking forms.
Finally for those who fancy some-
thing a little further away you will
see from the calendar that from the
4th to 7th June there is a rally and car
show at Disneyland Paris, Ray Tyler,
and myself have already booked, so
if you wish to join us talk to either
Ray or myself and we can give you a
brochure, there is also a package for
friends and family to travel in non
classic cars.
That’s it for now until the next issue,
Jeff Webb
Area 4 Chairman

BITS AND PIECES
______
Mike O'Driscoll, Managing Director of Jaguar Cars announced the introduc-tion of advanced new generation pet-rol and diesel including a new diesel
for the XF. Featuring all-new AJ-V8 Gen III pet-rol engines and new AJ-V6D Gen III diesel engines, the Jaguar XF now delivers more power and more per-formance with comparable or better
fuel economy and emissions than the engines they supersede. The Jaguar XFR is powered by the all-new supercharged 510PS (510bhp SAE) V8 with acceleration from 0-
60mph in just 4.7 seconds making it the ultimate Jaguar sport saloon. A naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8, pro-ducing 385PS, powers other V8 XF models. Distinguished by unique exterior and
interior design features, the XFR in-cludes revised bumpers and lower
front air intakes, sill extensions, bon-net louvres and grilles, four tailpipes, a boot-lid spoiler, unique seats and 20-inch alloy wheels.
The new Jaguar XF 3.0-litre AJ-V6D Gen III diesel features a twin sequen-tial turbocharged engine available as t he 275PS/600Nm S o r a 240PS/500Nm version. Both offer exceptional efficiency and refinement and in the case of the Diesel S accel-
erates from 0-60 in just 5.9 seconds. With 275PS, the new Jaguar XF 3.0-litre diesel S is 33 percent more pow-erful than the acclaimed 2.7-litre TDV6 it replaces. Torque peaks at a substantial 600Nm, with 61 percent
more torque available from 1500rpm. Every new engine for the Jaguar XF range has highly competitive fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures. Both diesel versions deliver combined average fuel consumption of 42.0mpg - an improvement on the acclaimed
2.7-litre engine of nearly 12 percent - and a CO2 of 179g/km.
