Presidential PerspectiveAs you read this months’ Jaguar Tracks, you’ll find two articles about recent club drives, one to the Borrego Springs Resort and Spa in late January and a second to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in early February. Jorgene and I participated in both and had a great time. Of the numerous club events, I especially like the drives. It gives me an excuse (motivation) to spend time in the garage cleaning whichever of our three Jags we plan to drive, reviewing the list of attendees that Bob Proctor pulls together so we know who will we have a chance to talk Jaguars with, enjoying the drive itself, and then comparing cars and experiences at the end of the drive. Drives are also a great way to meet new members, as was the case with the Safari Park drive where we met Bill and Amy Swift. The recent trend of exercising our Jags will continue in March with a drive through North County to Lake Wohlford. This is being set up and hosted by Joe and Deb Harding, long-time SDJC members.

While on the topic of drives, my daily commute has recently undergone a significant change. For many years, I worked at the same loca-tion near UCSD that allowed me to take a fairly leisurely route along the coast on surface streets. With a recent company reorganization, I now join the thousands of commuters getting to and from work via the 52, 163 and 15 freeways. The good news for me is that I get to drive against traffic since I go east and north in the mornings and vice versa in the evening. What I have noticed during my new commute is the relatively small number of Jaguars that I see. While literally hundreds of BMWs, Toyotas/Lexus’ (Lexi?), and other marques share the road with me, I can typically count the number of Jags on two hands, and sometimes one. I’m all for greater Jaguar sales, but this highlights for me the unique experience of owning cars that provide such a great combination of “Grace, Pace and Space”.

Jaguar is still a relatively small-volume manufacturer, but with this comes the cachet of driving something special. It is a rare week that goes by in which someone doesn’t comment on the styling of the Jag I am driving, often followed by wistful mention of E-Types or other earlier models owned by themselves, a family member or a friend. I find it hard to believe that similar comments are made about cars from other manufacturers, at least those that sell to the mainstream market. But then again I am biased, having owned only Jaguars over the past 22 years.

As noted earlier, your Board of Directors is continuing a detailed review of club expenses and ways to increase the effectiveness that club dues are apportioned for your benefit. A part of this review is a close look at the costs associated with publishing and mailing the hard-copy version of Jaguar Tracks. Keep an eye out for an e-mail update of this topic as we will be requesting member feedback on any proposed change.

March 2016 Jaguar Tracks 10

The first event of 2016 for the SDJC was a huge success! First Vice President Bob Proctor negotiated his tail off for an amazing overnight stay, dinner included too (!) deal at the Borrego Springs Resort and Spa. Many of our members knew a good deal when they saw it and signed up in a flash. With 44 attendees driving 22 Jaguars we practically took over the joint!

The drive began from two different locations. One in San Marcos for the north dwelling members, with the Proctors leading the way, and the other in Torrey Highlands for the more southern members, headed up by the McDonalds. The two groups converged, and met up, along with those who made their own way, at Dudley’s Bakery in Santa Ysabel for a “quick” lunch (well, maybe not so much). The predicted rain held off and therefore we were not forced to take the alternate route and could enjoy the scenery on beautiful Wynola Rd (and miss the downtown Julian traffic). The only “casualty” was one of Kathleen and Al Steele’s tires that went flat in Dudley’s parking lot. All Jaguars eventually left Dudley’s for the remainder of the (twisty, cliff hugging, Ali’s eyes shut - gripping the car handle) trip to Borrego Springs arriving in time for some members to take a quick dip in the pool or spa and others to enjoy some nice chit chat out by the pool. Still others made a beeline for the bar to quench their thirst (must have been the dry desert air).

By 5:30pm most of the group had convened in the bar for a lovely get together. By 6:30 the staff herded us into the dining room and the various groups of seating the resort had set up for us. We dined on a delicious dinner of either Chicken Marsala or Top Sirloin, both of which seemed to be cooked to perfection and got rave reviews but possibly not as many as the incred-ible desserts. Our Illustrious and newly elected President, Dan Jensen, welcomed everyone. New members Chris Jones and Robin Lee, and John and Deb Zaharychk joined the SDJC for their first ever event. It was also great to see many long time members and especially a joy to see The Copelands who were able to make their first overnight event since Mary’s stroke. We are so glad you did! The SDJC is also pleased to welcome so many members who come from Orange and Riverside Counties (Bennett’s, Leuthens, Quale’s and Morgan/Thomas) to hang out with the cool kids.

Sunday morning everyone was free to do their own thing. Some had breakfast at the resort, while others ventured over to La Casa del Zorro to check out the brunch there. Going out on a limb and saying some probably slept in (hey, what happens in Borrego stays in Borrego). I’m sure many took in the sights of downtown Borrego Springs and those incredible Art Sculptures of Borrego Springs by Ricardo Breceda. All in all it, was a lovely and relaxing weekend with great friends and beautiful cars.

March 2016 Jaguar Tracks 12

We were lucky to have such a beautiful day for our first SDJC visit to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. After visiting the San Diego Zoo for the last several years, SDJC club member and very good friend to the SD Zoo, Ray Waite, our host, thought it might be time to mix it up a bit and suggested the Safari Park as our February 2016 event. Mother Nature apparently con-curred, because the weather was glorious!

After gathering at the Park entrance for 9:45am roll call, we boarded our shuttles for a quick trip over to… Africa! We climbed aboard two trams which were reserved exclusively for our 64 participating club members and were treated to a tour through the Africa exhibit. The Africa Tram is an exciting expedition. Brightly colored tour vehicles allowed the riders to view the diverse animal collection creating a relaxing adventure. The ride path took us around and through some of the animal natural exhibits, giving the club a chance to connect with the animals on a closer level. We saw cheetahs, lions, giraffes (besides Bob Proctor), zebras, rhinos, and a whole host of others. Throughout the tour, our guides filled us in on the latest science and conservancy efforts by the Zoo and upcoming exhibit remodels planned for both the Safari Park and the Zoo.

When we returned from our African Safari, we were herded (get it?) to the Hunte Nairobi Pavilion where a lovely buffet luncheon was being set up for us. But first, we were able to get up close and personal with a few of the residents of the Safari Park. Some guinea fowl greeted us upon our arrival and Julius Squeezer, a 12 foot python, relaxed with us in the pavilion, for a bit.

After extending a warm welcome to our newest members, President Dan Jensen presented a check to San Diego Zoologi-cal Society from SDJC members for $1,250, to be used to contribute to the next generation of jaguars exhibited at the Zoo. Once the buffet was open, we enjoyed a luncheon of salmon, chicken and beef tenderloin, salads, vegetables and of course, several different choices of yummy cakes. After lunch, guests were free to spend the day at the park and visit other exhibits, including the new Tiger Trails exhibit where we were even treated to a view of a cub. Many members took advantage of this opportunity as it would have been difficult to find a more perfect day for a trip to the Safari Park. Thanks to Ray Waite for hosting this wonderful outing.
