Jahja | EMBA Batch 3 UPH – Peking University Beijing Leadership Week 26-30 October 2015 - Reflection Paper What are the key points that you think will help you in the possible practice in the future? In this leadership week, I learned a lot about China’s social and economic condition. China today is making a huge progress in its economic, and becoming one of the largest country in Asia that had highest economic growth. This economic growth was explained clearly by Dr. Wang Yizhou and Prof. Xuesheng Qin, Ph.D, from the era of Mao Zhe Dong until the new era of Xi Jin Ping today and continued with explanation on Mobile Internet Revolution by Jason Long from Peking University.. Some key point that I found very interesting for me to help me doing my work back in Indonesia are: 1. A great vision and execution In each era, each leader of China have a great vision to develop the country. In Mao’s era, his vision is more focus to political independence and economic margining, also continued posture of revolution and struggle. In Deng Xiao Ping’s era, his vision is more focus to economic reform and open-up, and in his era China started to growth. And now in Xi Jin Ping’s era, his vision on “Chinese Dream” is national rejuvenation, improvement of people’s livelihoods, prosperity, construction of a better society and a strengthened military. From each era, I learned that each leader put a vision and execute the vision into action and they commited to fulfill the vision. 2. Focus on people development China realized that to be able to compete with other country the must have skillfull people and with their advantage in number of their population it is a big home work for them to educate the people. In Mao’s era mostly the people don’t get the proper education, and the regime is force the people obey the government. But when China is opened up at Deng’s era, the gave more attention to education and developed people skill. They see people more as an asset to help the country’s growth. 3. Adapt to the market change and economic trends After the revolution, China is a country without bargaining power. But soon under communism, they started to build their country. They have no technolgy and industry so they open to learn technology from other country. China is well-known as plagiat country, but in this way the make their economic growth. What are the key points that you think will help you in the possible practice in the future? In this leadership week, I learned a lot about China’s social and economic condition. China today is making a huge progress in its economic, and becoming one of the largest country in Asia that had highest economic growth. This economic growth was explained clearly by Dr. Wang Yizhou and Prof. Xuesheng Qin, Ph.D, from the era of Mao Zhe Dong until the new era of Xi Jin Ping today and continued with explanation on Mobile Internet Revolution by Jason Long from Peking University..Some key point that I found very interesting for me to help me doing my work back in Indonesia are:

1. A great vision and executionIn each era, each leader of China have a great vision to develop the country.

2. Focus on people developmentChina realized that to be able to compete with other country the must have skillfull people and with their advantage in number of their population it is a big home work for them to educate the people. In Mao’s era mostly the people don’t get the proper education, and the regime is force the people obey the government. But when China is opened up at Deng’s era, the gave more attention to education and developed people skill. They see people more as an asset to help the country’s growth.

3. Adapt to the market change and economic trendsAfter the revolution, China is a country without bargaining power. But soon under communism, they started to build their country. They have no technolgy and industry so they open to learn technology from other country. China is well-known as plagiat country, but in this way the make their economic growth. To accelerate their growth, the build infrastructure and investing on mass labor intensive industry. They are following the trend in the world and blend it in with China’s culture.

4. Networking and alliance with other countryThis cooperation is done in many aspect not only economic. To strengthen the position, China is making relation with other country and nowaday they do more investing outside China.

5. Optimizing internet technology to support economic growthIn China, internet technology is booming eventhough there is some restriction in some website. But mostly in China, all the business is optimize the usage of internet technology and more further now they are not only using traditional internet but already mobile internet. This internet technology is proven to reduce cost and almost make no cost for the business.

How will this prepare you in doing business in Indonesia? At this moment I’m preparing my own business with my colleagues. Our business is in travel & leisure. And from this leadership week, I got some insight that I can used to prepare my business more feasible before the business is launching. I see a lot of things that can be improved such as:

Jahja | EMBA Batch 3 UPH – Peking UniversityBeijing Leadership Week 26-30 October 2015 - Reflection PaperWhat are the most interesting learnings or insights from the company visits? We had the opportunity to visit some company in China. At the first day, we visited Yanjing Beer and Naton Institute of Medical Technology. On second day, we visited EVE Group and Beijing Honggau Creative Architectural Design. And on the last day, we visited Cheku Cafe (Garage Cafe) at Beijing’s Zhongguancun Venture Street or also well-known as Inno Way.The most interesting things that I learned from each company are :

1. Yanjing BeerIn this company, I learned about automation in manufacturing process, the quality control for the product and how company actively involved in country’s event like Olympics events. Yanjing Beer positioned itself as number one beer manufacturing by providing high quality product that produced using high quality machines. They also shared about product differentiation to capture all market level to boost the maximum profit. And with their profit, they can contribute to international event such as Olympics 2008. In this company, I also learned how Chinese people is very proud for their own product and make decision to buy for their own product. This kind of action is also factor that boost the economic growth in China.

2. Naton Institute of Medical TechnologyIn Naton Institute of Medical Technology, I didn’t learn a lot of things since the company representative didn’t understand the business very well. All that I can summarized during this factory trip in Naton, I see that they are trying to make a high quality product using local content raw material so their product can be competitive in the market. They also want to expand their market oversea and compete with international brand.

3. EVE GroupI learned a lot in EVE Group presentation. They are producing premium fashion product and in order to achieve the high standard for its product, they are treating their employee with a premium treatment. They believe that by giving premium treatment to their employee will impact to the premium service that their employee will give to the premium customer. They also mange their marketing campaign so well by developed “Fashion Partner” program, where they collaborated with top executive in China to become their ambassador and fashion models. This company is also have corporate social responsibility program, in this program I learned how to empower the society to become our partner in doing business and make a win-win collaboration.

4. Beijing Honggau Creative Architectural DesignHonggau is very interesting company, it is the first architectural company listing on the stock market. In Honggao, people is the key element of the organization because this is a creative industry which is have direct attach with people. This company have a lot of young talented people as their architect and all of them is doing extraordinary project across China. I learned about how to deal with employee retention in this company. They always put employee satisfaction as the highest priority, this satisfaction level is not talk about giving proper salary but also give the employee freedom to explore their creativity and put into the project. The open communication culture is also an important part to build the sustainability of this company. This whole aspect made Honggao becoming the number one company in its industry in China.

5. Cheku Cafe (Garage Cafe)In this place, the owner is not just doing business selling coffee and any other snack for tea time but also provide an opportunity for entrepreneur and investor to meet and start a new business. Many start up business and mostly online business establish from this cafe. Therefore the government give this cafe an award for their participation in creating new business. This kind of place is something new and still not available in Indonesia. I think this a very good example and give me an idea to make a business like this here in Jakarta. Because nowadays a lot start up companay arise but hard to find investor, by making this business it will be a good opportunity to build the economic of Indonesia and make our own business still running.
