Respected members, Jai Jinendra, On behalf of Board of Trustees (BOT) and Executive Committee (EC) of the Jain Society of Greater Detroit (JSGD), we wish you all have enjoyed the summer of 2012.
Under the guidance of Vinaybhai & Snehaben and Vastupalbhai & Varshaben Shah, 100 Society members completed Panch Tirthi Yatra to Boston-New York from August 17 to 19, 2012. It was well coordinated and executed. We appreciate their continued efforts from last few years.
JSGD arranged the prayers on August 12th for the Sikh brothers and sisters who lost
their lives during the tragic incident in Oak Creek, Wisconsin Gurudwara. It was attended by 120+ people from various communities. The effort was well received by other communities.
Paryushan is right around the corner from Sept 12th to 19th followed by Das Lakshana
from Sept19th to 28th. . A complete Paryushan & Das Lakshana schedule is included in
this Jain Vani and is available on our website at http://www.jain-temple.org/schedule.php. We are delighted that Pujya Pramodaben will be with us during the entire Paryushan celebration. We would like to thank Shrikantbhai and Ninanben Mehta for hosting Pramodaben and Gurudev Chitrabhanuji. The Swapna Darshan fixed gheebolis signup sheet has been posted at the temple. We request everyone to RSVP for the Swapna Darshan Swamivatsalya lunch on the Temple web site.
JSGD is happy to inform all the tapasvis that they can do ekasana at the Temple during Paryushan. The Society thanks Bhartiben Doshi and the team for leading this effort. Members, who wish to do ekasana during Paryushan, are requested to please write their name on the bulletin board. This will enable the volunteers to prepare adequate food for the tapasvis.
Parna is on September 20th. All the Tapasvis and Sakal Sangh are invited for the Parna. We thank the entire Parna team for volunteering.
We have started validating membership data for new directory that will be distributed during Diwali. We would like to thank all the members for filling out the forms or providing their information over the phone. There are few members that we were unable to contact due to various reasons. If you have not been contacted and your information needs to be updated / added, please contact any EC member.
Thanks & Jai Jinendra! Anand Bora Rajiv Maheshwari President, Executive Committee Chairman, Board of Trustee

BOT Corner
Organizing Society Records: One of the projects the BOT is working on this year is to consolidate all the JSGD records both hard and soft copies in a central location. We are prioritizing those records that are Legal, JSGD assets and financial. If you have any of these records stored with you please provide to Milap Shah. Hard/Soft copies can be dropped off at the temple office. Please place in an envelope marked "Attention to Milap”, and include your contact information. If you have a questions please call Milap at 734-455-5260. Thank you for your support and the safekeeping of society documents. Charitable Gift of Life Insurance: Life Insurance can be a convenient way to make a substantial gift to JSGD for a relatively modest annual cost. While there are many different types of life insurance, the principle of giving remains the same - a relatively small gift in the present will ultimately provide a much larger gift in the future. Plus your donations could be tax deductible. If you are interested in this program or need more details, please contact any EC or BOT member. If you are a society member in good standing for at least 3 years and are a Life Insurance agent, please send us your name and contact information so that we can provide it to the interested members. JAINA 2013 Convention: This time, the JAINA convention is in our town, Detroit is hosting the upcoming 2013 JAINA Convention! Vastupalbhai Shah is leading the efforts for this convention. We would like to encourage every family to have at least one member be part of the JAINA team. Members Financial Statements: Please look through your recent statement from the Society. We request you to pay any outstanding balance in a timely manner. Please call Nikhil Kothari (BOT) or Vijay B Shah (EC) if you have any questions about your statement.
99 Yatra Summary
A presentation on Shree Shatrunjay Mahatirth 99 yatra 2011 is available on JAINA web site. This is wonderful presentation which gives quick review of 60 days yatra in 2minutes. http://www.jaina.org/?page=presentations
Completion of 2012 Panch Tirth Yatra
With the blessings of the 'Shashan Dev', continued support and encouragement from our BOT/EC and wonderful cooperation from all yatris, we had a safe, enjoyable and successful Yatra from our temple to Buffalo – NY, Burlington – MA, Norwood – MA, Albany – NY and Syracuse – NY. We were very well received by all the Sanghs. We started from our Farmington Hills Derasar with 100 Yatris in 2 buses – the youngest yatri was 6 months old and the oldest one was 84 years. We had 3 Sanghpatis and many other sponsors for Aarti and Mangal Divo. In Syracuse, it was a home-Derasar. All the Sanghs received us with very warm welcome and took really good care of yatris.
In Burlington, we performed Snatra Puja and at rest of the temples we performed Bhakti.
All the yatris are requested to submit their feedback on JSGD website www.jain-temple.org and then choose
Feedback and put Major Event as category.

are vividly preached and practiced during the festival. The eleventh day is the day of Kshma Yachna.
1. Uttama Kshama - Supreme Forgiveness (To observe tolerance whole-heartedly, Shunning anger.)
2. Uttama Mardava - Tenderness or Humility (To observe the virtue of humility subduing vanity and passions.)
3. Uttama Arjaya - Straight-forwardness or Honesty (To practice a deceit-free conduct in life by
vanquishing the passion of deception.)
4. Uttama Shaucha: Contentment or Purity (To keep the body, mind and speech pure by discarding greed. 5. Uttama Satya - Truthfulness (To speak affectionate and just words with a holy Intention causing no
injury to any living being.) 6. Uttama Sanyam - Self-restraint (To defend all living beings with utmost power in a cosmopolitan spirit
abstaining from all the pleasures provided by the five ) 7. Uttama Tapa - Penance or Austerities (To practice austerities putting a check on all worldly
allurements.) 8. Uttama Tyaga - Renunciation (To give fourfold charities - Ahara (food), Abhaya (fearlessness), Aushadha (medicine), and Shastra Dana (distribution of Holy Scriptures).
9. Uttama Akinchany - Non-attachment (To enhance faith in the real self as against non-self-i.e., material objects; and to discard internal Parigraha viz. anger and pride; and external Parigraha) 10. JOY Volleyball Tournament: On August 11th, JOY hosted our first volleyball
tournament! There were many teams, both Jain and non- Jain who competed
for first place. Team Vicious and Delicious took first place, while the Uncles
team took second. The day was full of fun and it was a great way to bring the
summer to a close.
JOY Reunion: On August 16th, JOY had our annual JOY reunion. We hosted it at Mexican Fiesta in Canton where we spent the evening eating, talking and catching up on each other’s lives. The reunion is a great way to keep all the JOY kids, younger and older, connected and it’s also a great way to close the age gap between the kids.
Elections are coming up for a new JOY board. They will be held on Swapna Darshan day, but applications and essay/speech will be due prior to that. If you are interested in running, contact any current JOY board member. Applications will be out soon.

Sikh Gurudwara Shooting
JSGD sent a condolences message to Sikh Community of Oak Creek for the victims of Wisconsin
Gurudwara shooting. Our society also hosted the prayer for the victims and their families to show our
support to Sikh community. Our theme was "Live and Let Live" based on the primary principle of Jainism
(Non-Violence) which was well received by all attendees from various Indian/Asian communities. Sikh
community truly appreciated the prayer; various community leaders called the prayer event as a step
towards the unity of Indian-Asian communities and proposed to continue interfaith collaboration.
