One step into the City Palace and themagnificent architecture and huge gardenstake you to the eras of Rajas and Maharajas. From the richly decorated gateways to thefascination that awaits you at each of themuseums, the place makes for an excitingtime.  At the Mubarak Mahal, you cansee the variety of textiles and the lushgarments the Maharajas of Jaipur used towear. From Sanganeri Block Prints toexquisite Kashmiri Pashminas, you can see itall here. The most fascinating amongstthese costumes are perhaps the ones ofSawai Madhosingh I, who weighed about250 kg and still managed to have 108 wives!

The next stop on your adventure in the CityPalace will probably be the Chandra Mahal, which can be called the most magnificentstructure in the whole building, without adoubt! With seven floors that have their ownunique names, the building houses some ofthe finest paintings, floral decorations andmirror work art that you would have setyour eyes on.

Only the ground floor of the Chandra Mahalis accessible as the descendants of the royalfamily still reside in the rest of thebuilding.  Other notable places insidethe complex include the two sterling silver

vessels in the Diwan-I-Khas, which are thelargest vessels in the world, weaponrydisplay at the Maharani Palace and theBaggi Khana, a museum of the Maharaja'srides.

2 Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal Road, Badi Choupad,Pink City, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302002,India

Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Singh as apart of the City Palace, Hawa Mahal was anextension of the women's chamber with thepurpose of allowing royal ladies to observeeveryday life in the street below withoutbeing seen. A five-storey high red sandstonestructure complete with over 950 windows,Hawa Mahal was made in such a way thatthe breeze circulates through thesewindows, giving the palace its name.

Jaipur Travel Guide - http://www.ixigo.com/travel-guide/jaipur page 3

If you look at it closely, the five-storeyed Hawa Mahal in Jaipur appears like a beehive, specially so because the windows aredecorated with very fine lattice work. It issaid that the designer of this structure, LalChand Ustad envisioned the Hawa Mahal insuch a way that it resembles the crown ofLord Krishna, the favourite deity of womenin Rajasthan. One of the most prominentlandmarks in the city, Hawa Mahal isperhaps also one of the most uniquehistoric structures of the country.

There is little to be seen inside thecomplex, if you want to save yourself theeffort of climbing up 5 cramped set of stairs, just click pictures from outside!

4 Jantar Mantar

Near City Palace, Tripolia Bazar,Jaipur, Rajasthan 302002, India

Lauded as a UNESCO World Heritage Siteand located very close to the City Palace,Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is the largest of fiveastronomical observatories built byMaharaja Jai Singh during the period 1727-1734. Consisting of 14 major geometricdevices for measuring time, predicting

eclipses, tracking stars in their orbits, ascertaining the declination of planets anddetermining the celestial altitudes, theobservatory is a major attraction for kidsand adults alike. There is not a single boringmoment as you marvel at the operations ofthese devices.

The name Jantar Mantar literally translatesinto instrument of calculation. Visiting theplace is a fascinating experience as one canlearn how our ancestors used limitedtechnology to study and decipher somecomplicated facts of science. The biggestinstrument here is the Samrat Yantra. This90 feet structure is used to measure thetime of the day by calculating and observingthe placement and length of the shadow. There are even some smaller instrumentswhich are a feat of architecture and shownoteworthy design and functions like theRam Yantra.

The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is one amongfive built by Maharaja Jai Singh II between1727 and 1734. The Jaipur Observatory isthe largest and best preserved of these

structures. The observatory consists of 14major geometric devices for measuringtime, predicting eclipses, tracking stars’location as the earth orbits around the sun, ascertaining the declinations of planets anddetermining the celestial altitudes andrelated ephemerides. Each is a fixed and‘focussed’ tool. The Samrat Yantra, thelargest instrument, is 90 feet (27 m) high, itsshadow carefully plotted to tell the time ofday. Its face is angled at 27 degrees, thelatitude of Jaipur.

Today the accuracy of the structures hereis questionable, mainly because of theirsheer size and the unskilled labour thatconstructed it. However, local astronomersstill use the place to make predictions forthe farmers. All said and done, the placemakes for a visit, thanks to the fascinationfactor it holds!

Delhi Road, Amber City, Jaipur,Rajasthan 302001, India

Amber Fort is a fort-palace complexbuilt in the hybrid Hindu-Muslim style datingback to the 17th Century. This magnificentstructure was built by Raja Man Singh I andstill retains all its stately grandeur.Overlooking the Maota Lake, this attractionis situated on the outskirts of the city and isknown for its imposing gateways andcobbled pathways.

The Diwan-e-Aam situated inside the AmerFort built with  red sandstone and marble  is a beautiful example of architecture, nothing short of poetry in stone. Sheesh Mahal in the same complex is anotheraesthetic treat, especially when it sendsaway darting rays of sunlight reflected bythe thousands of glasses. The mostinteresting aspect of this complex is theSukh Niwas, where an air conditioning effectwas created in the ancient times with airblowing through cascading coolwater.

Through the 11th to the 16th century,Amber was ruled by the Kachhwahas, untilthe capital was moved to Jaipur. Raja ManSingh constructed this fort in 1592 AD andwas later expanded and renovated.
