JAIROS JIRI ASSOCIATION FOR REHABILITATION OF THE DISABLED AND

BLIND

PROGRESS REPORT TO OKUMENISCHE HILFE ZIMBABWE ON THE

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME FOR 2015

1. Introduction

The Jairos Jiri Association Scholarship Programme was established in 1992 with the

support of Okumenische Hilfe Zimbabwe and since then thousands of capable but

poor students with disabilities have benefitted immensely from this important project.

Some proceeded up to secondary and tertiary education and are now working in

different places.

2. Situation in 2015

The main problem is that most parents in Zimbabwe cannot meet the health and

educational requirements of a child with disability accompanied by a demand of

school fees from special schools. This has affected the quality of life of the general

populace of children with disabilities in Zimbabwe. The socio-economic problems

which continuously dogged our country for the past decade maybe attributed to the

high school dropout that were recorded in 2014 especially among Children with

Disabilities. Thus JJA opted to assist in part payment of school fees for children in its

2 schools which are JJA Rusape and JJA Harare Centre. In 2015 we received $5

545.00 from Okumenische Hilfe Zimbabwe. We paid school fees worth $4 500.00 for

45 children and we bought uniforms, books and learning material for these children

worth $1 045.00 the total amounted to $5 545.00. The list of children who were

sponsored by Okumenische Hilfe Zimbabwe in 2015 for JJA Harare Centre and

Rusape Centre is as tabulated below.

Challenges

• In 2015 JJA received $5 545.00 from Okumenische Hilfe Zimbabwe,

however it was not enough to pay full fees for 45 children which were targeted

for both JJA Harare Centre and JJA Rusape Centre hence part payments were

done to avoid drop out of children due to failure to pay school fees.

• Parents of children with disabilities struggle to meet the special needs for their

children with disabilities like assistive devices which are rather expensive

these include, crutches, wheel chairs for those with difficulty in mobility,

white cans for those with visual impairment, walkers and callipers for those

with physical disability.

• Parents of children with disabilities face challenges of paying school fees for

their children since most of them are not gainfully employed in light of the

high unemployment rates in the country.

• The physiological, psychological, educational and general welfare of these

children becomes a challenge for Jairos Jiri Association because these children

need food, clothing and school equipment.

Beneficiaries

With the support of Okumenische Hilfe Zimbabwe we were able to sponsor a total of 45

students comprising of 22 boys and 23 girls from JJA Rusape and JJA Harare Centre.

24

Please note that the pictures appearing on the report are for beneficiaries at JJA Harare Centre

and JJA Rusape Centre. The pictures for beneficiaries at Rusape Centre are also attached on

their thank you letters in form of hard copies. Also attached are hard copies of thank you

letters from JJA Harare Centre and Rusape Centre children.

B. Outlook

The problem of drought in some of the areas where JJA Schools are operating has become a

contributing factor which is causing dropouts especially for children with disabilities for most

of the parents are not on gainful employment. This drastically impacts on the child’s

performance. However we still have hope that the economic situation in Zimbabwe shall

continue to stabilise due to the introduction of Zim-Asset which is deemed to see the

economy taking a complete turnaround.

C. Conclusion

The gratitude, hope and meaningfulness of life as expressed by the many beneficiaries of the

Scholarship Fund and our deep indebtedness to Okumenische Hilfe Zimbabwe cannot be over

emphasised. We look back with a great sense of pride and joy. We rejoice considering the

many young intelligent boys and girls with disabilities, whose future would otherwise have

been bleak without your intervention but now we have a very bright future because of your

noble organisation. It is worth noting that although we are facing challenges of drought, we

are able to keep the programme alive and active as a result of your great understanding and

constant support. We shall remain ever so grateful for the financial support which you have

so generously given to us. Honestly it has transformed the lives of thousands of boys and

girls with disabilities and restored their dignity and hope in totality.
