JALC Men's basketball media guideTRANSCRIPT
JohnA.LoganCollegewascreatedbypublicmandateinSeptember,1967.ItbeganitsfirstacademicyearinSeptember, 1968, with 330 students enrolled. Administratively, it operated from a store-front facility in Herrin, Illinois, using various rented community facilities as classrooms.
In 1969, the College acquired and occupied its permanent campus, a 161-acre tract fronting Highway 13 just westofCarterville,Illinois.Abondreferendumwaspassedthesameyeartohelpfinancetheconstructionofthefirstphase of a permanent building, which was subsequently constructed and occupied in 1973.
In 1981, the College passed a $6 million bond referendum to provide 60,000 square feet of new and renovated facilities, including 3 new buildings, to replace 8 interim buildings on the campus. In 1991, the College dedicated an additional 100,000 square feet of new and remodeled facilities as part of an $8.5 million project funded principally by the Illinois Capital Development Board. In 1995, the College passed a $16 million bond referendum to provide 108,000 new square feet in 6 buildings. This project was also funded principally by the Illinois Capital Development Board. The legislature approved an additional $8.4 million in construction monies in 1999; construction is underway on a Community Health Education Complex and Workforce Development Center.
TheCollegewasfirstaccreditedin1972bytheNorthCentralAssociationofCollegesandSchools.
NathanA.Iveywastheinstitution’sfirstpresident,servingfrom1968to1973,followedbyThomasDeem,1973-74.RobertE.Tarvinwaspresidentuntil1982,andHaroldR.O’Neilservedfrom1982to1989.Dr.RayHancockservedfrom1989-2000.Dr.RobertL.Meesisthecurrentpresident.
John A. TheCollege’sCartervillefacilitiesnowinclude169acres,withextensioncentersinDuQuoinandWestFrankfort.The College operates as a comprehensive community college under the authority of the Illinois Community College Act. Duringhis tenureat JohnA. LoganCollege,Dr.Meeshasbeenpresident of the IllinoisCommunityCollegeChiefAcademicOfficersandassumedaleadershiproleintheexpansionofacademicprogramsandinthedevelopmentoftheschool’sverysuccessfulCenterforBusinessandIndustry.TheCollegewasrankedfifthinthenationbyRollingStonemagazinein1998basedon research conducted by UCLA personnel at the Center for the Study of Community Colleges.
Dr.Meesisastrongadvocateofintercollegiateathletics,andstressesawell-balancedprogramwithemphasisonaconcernforthestudent-athlete.Meesalsobelievesthataqualityathleticprogramthat emphasizes academics, responsibility, dedication, and teamwork greatly enhances the growth of the student-athlete and promotes the image of the College locally, statewide, and nationwide.

Dr.TimDaugherty,Vice-PresidentforAdministration,isthesenioradministratorforintercollegiateathleticsatJohnA.LoganCollege.Heholdsbothhisbachelor’sandmaster’sdegreesfromEasternIllinoisUniversityandaPh.D.inHigherEducationAdministrationfromSouthernIllinoisUniversity.HejoinedtheCollegeinJune2008afterspendingthepast24yearsatSoutheasternIllinoisCollegewhere he was also served as the senior administrator for intercollegiate athletics.
Inadditiontoathletics,heoverseestheCollege’sofficesofAdmissions,Assessment,FinancialAid,Placement,Transfer,StudentSuccessCenter,CommunityRelations,ContinuingEducation,andthe Center for Business and Industry. A native of Herrin, the 1974 graduate of Herrin High School isamemberoftheTigerHallofFameinbothbasketballandfootball.

Jerry Halstead ATHLETICDIRECTOR InMay2001,long-timeVolunteerbaseballcoachJerryHalsteadbecamethefirstnewathletic
directoratJohnA.LoganCollegein21years,replacingJohnSala,whoretiredafterservinginthatcapacity since 1980.
A native of Carterville, Halstead attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale and graduated in1982withabachelor’sdegreeinphysicaleducation.WhileattendingSIU,HalsteadpitchedfortheSalukibaseballteamforthreeyears,helpingwinMissouriValleyConferencechampionshipsandparticipatingintheNCAATournament.
Inthefallof1982,hebeganhiscareeratLoganastheassistantbaseballcoach.Hetookoverasheadbaseballcoachafteroneseasonandalsoservedastheassistantmen’sbasketballcoachfor three years.
Halsteadhasbuiltthebaseballprogramintooneofthetopprogramsinthecountry.TheVolunteersannually rank among the elite in community college baseball. They won the Great Rivers Athletic Conferencetitlein2001,2002,and2004.TheyalsowonRegion24championshipsin2002,2004,and2006.In2002theVolswentontofinishseventhattheNJCAAWorldSeries.
Duringthe1990s,Loganpostedfourstraightnationaltop-tenfinishesandearnedfourconferencetitles.FourteenformerVolunteersarecurrentlyplayingprofessionalbaseball.Halsteadhasproduced10NJCAAAll-Americansandroutinelyleadsthenation in players signing at four-year schools.
Whilehismainfocushasbeenonbaseballthroughoutmostofhiscareer,HalsteadbecameLogan’scoordinatorofathleticsin the fall of 1995. In that position, he dealt with all aspects of the Athletic Department and is now in charge of all seven college sports(baseball,softball,men’sbasketball,women’sbasketball,men’sgolf,women’sgolf,andvolleyball).
Halsteadandhiswife,Kathy,resideinCarterville.Theyhavetwosons,JasonandAaron,andonedaughter,Jennifer.

Mark Imhoff HEADBASKETBALLCOACHMark Imhoff is inhis16thseasonasheadmen’sbasketballcoachatJohnA.Logan
College.Inthepast15years,theVolunteershavepostedsolidrecordsunderhisdirection,winningRegion24Tournamenttitlesin1999and2000andtheGRACchampionshipin2007and2010.Hisrecordis303-178.Beforeassuminghiscurrentposition,heservedastheassistantcoachfortheVolunteersfor10seasons.Theteamcompiledarecordof214-118during that time.
Imhoff,anativeofMurphysboro,attendedJohnA.LoganCollegeandplayedbaseballfortheVolunteersfrom1975-77.HetransferredtoEasternIllinoisUniversityandgraduatedwith a B.S. in physical education in 1979. While at Eastern, he worked as a student assistant for the Charleston High School basketball program.
Upon graduation from EIU, he worked as an assistant coach for basketball and football and as head baseball coach at Sparta High School before returning to graduate school in 1982.HegraduatedfromMoreheadStateUniversityinKentuckywithamaster’sdegreeineducation/counselingandworkedasanassistantbaseballcoachatMSUuntil1983.Beforecoming to Logan, he was the head basketball coach and guidance counselor at DeLand-Weldon High School in Illinois.
Kyle Smithpeters ASSISTANTBASKETBALLCOACHKyleSmithpetersisinhisfourthyearastheassistantmen’sbasketballcoachatLogan.
Before joining theVolunteers,heservedasanassistantmen’sbasketball coach foroneseason at Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg, Illinois.
BorninMcLeansboro,Illinois,SmithpetersmovedwithhisfamilytoHarrisburgwhenhewas12.AftergraduatingfromHarrisburgHighSchoolin2001,heattendedSoutheasternIllinoisCollegewhereheplayedbasketballfortwoyears.TheFalconscompiledarecordof55-6during that timeandadvanced to theNJCAANationalTournament, reaching theFinalFour.In2004,hetransferredtoSouthernIllinoisUniversitywherehewasapartoftwoMissouriValleyConferencechampionshipSalukibasketballteams.HegraduatedfromSIUwithabachelor’sdegreeinhistoryeducationin2006.
He and his wife, Carrie, reside in Harrisburg.Smithpetershasnowtakenajobasanassistantmen’sbasketballcoachatMissouriState
University.
