Jalna Branch Library

JALNA SERVICES:

•The Jalna Branch Library and South London Community Centre are seen at the hub of South London.

•Jalna is situated with the Community Centre on the White Oaks Park and is in close proximity to White Oaks School, the South London Community Pool and the Family Centre White Oaks.

•A playground is visible outside the children’s area windows

•Jalna provides a wide selection of collections to the public which includes fiction and nonfiction titles for adults, children and teens; audio books for all ages; newspapers and magazines; DVDs and music CDs; large print; picture books and other materials of interest to younger patrons; digital resources; French language materials and materials from the World languages collection.

•Laptops for loan and Hotspots were added to the collections in 2018

•Games to Go and English to Go bags were added in 2018 as well. Jalna also has a collection of Newcomer Family Games bags, donated by South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre (SLNRC), funded by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

•Jalna has two full time Settlement Workers (Library Settlement Partnership) who provide information and referral services as well as Discover Canada Citizenship classes. This service is in partnership with SLNRC, funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

•The branch provides public PCs that people can use to access the Internet to search for a job, to do research, to improve their skills or connect with family and friends as well WiFi access is available for people who have their own device

•There are ESL classes, Newcomer Youth Program and other programs for newcomers; storytimes for preschoolers; READ program to help reluctant readers; Book clubs; computer classes, as well as many other programs for all ages and interests.

BRIEF BRANCH HISTORY

•June 19, 1980 The eleventh branch library, White Oaks Branch, opened in a portable on the site of St. Anthony’s Separate School, 1380 Ernest Avenue.

•April 1990 The Jalna Branch Library opens at 1119 Jalna Boulevard to replace the White Oaks Branch Library. The Branch is attached to the South London Community Centre and they share space on the edge of the White Oaks park.

•July 1, 2005 Jalna Branch opens after extensive renovations. Now the Jalna Branch and the South London Community Centre share a common entrance, lobby and public washrooms.

•June 30, 2015 Jalna Branch Library re-opens after revitalization (paint, flooring, shelving and furniture). The South London Community Centre experienced extensive renovations as well. Additional space was added to accommodate Ontario Works as well as improve spaces for Settlement Services, meeting rooms and the community kitchen.
