ARRIVALANDDISMISSAL

Parentsdeliveringtheirstudenttoschoolshouldnotdropofftheirchildbefore8:20a.m.Wehavea“StopandDrop”laneintheDavidAvenuecircledrive.Thislaneistobeusedonlyinthemorningpriortoschool.Pleaseenterthefrontparkinglotfromtheeastandcontinueforwardtothewestendofthelot.LeftturnsareprohibitedfromtheDavidAvenueparkinglotbetween8:00and9:00a.m.and3:00and4:00p.m.Toensurethesafetyofourstudentsandfamilies,theSheboyganPoliceDepartmentdoesoccasionallypatroltheschool’sparkinglots.

Priorto8:35a.m.studentscanexitthevehicleandproceedtotheplayground(usingtheyellowpaintedsidewalksintheDavidAve.circledrive).Donotallowyourchildrentowalkbetweentheparkedvehiclesintheparkinglot.Theplaygroundissupervisedfrom8:20–8:35a.m.Ifitisrainingorthewindchillisatorbelow0degrees,studentswillbeallowedinside.

Schooldismissesat3:45p.m.onMonday,Tuesday,ThursdayandFriday.Schooldismissesat2:15p.m.onWednesday.

Allstudentswhoarewalkinghomeattheendofthedayshouldleaveforhomepromptlyat2:15p.m.onWednesdayand3:45p.m.onallotherdays.

Toensurethesafetyofthestudentswalkinghomeortotheirparent’svehicles,JamesMadisonalsorequeststhatvehiclesdonotenterthefrontparkinglotforafter-schoolpickup.Weaskthatparentswhoarepickinguptheirchildattheendofthedayparkonthestreetandwaitforyourchildatthemaindoorsoranotheragreeduponlocation.Ifyouarepickingupyourchildfromschoolweaskthatyoupleasedosoinatimelyfashion.Childrenshouldbepickedupnolaterthan3:55p.m.onMonday,Tuesday,ThursdayandFriday;andnolaterthan2:25p.m.onWednesday.

Weunderstandthattheremaybecircumstanceswhenyoumaypickupyourchildabitlateordropthemoffearly;however,ifthisbecomesachronicissue,administrationmaycontacttheSheboyganCountyDepartmentofHumanServices.

ATTENDANCE

TheWisconsinStateStatute118.5placestheresponsibilityofregularschoolattendanceupontheparents.Regularattendanceisessentialtoastudent’ssuccessinschool.Mostsubjectsaretaughtinsequence,requiringtheunderstandingofeachconceptintheorderofitspresentation.Persistentabsenteeismand/ortardinesscreateagenuinehardshipforastudentandareregardedasaveryseriousproblem.

InaccordancewithWisconsinStateStatute118.5,administrationmayrequireasignedmedical/doctor’sexcuseifthenumberofparentalexcusedabsencesisdeemedexcessiveortotals10ormoreofthetotalnumberofschooldaysinasemester.Ifnomedicalexcuseisreceived,theschooladministrationwillconsidertheabsencestobeunexcused.

Absences

Ifastudentisabsentduetoillnessorinjuryorforothergoodreasons,StatelawrequiresaWRITTENEXCUSEfromtheparentorguardiantotheteacherstatingthereasonfortheabsenceoraPHONECALLtotheschoolofficeat459-3585priortothebeginningoftheschoolday(pleaseleaveamessageifbefore7:45a.m.)Ifwehavenotreceivedacallwithinareasonableamountoftime,theofficewillcallyourhome/placeofemploymenttoverifytheabsence.Ifwedonotreceiveaphonecallornotefromyouandarenotabletocontactyou,yourchildwillbeconsideredUNEXCUSEDforthatday.

Ifyourchildisabsentfromschoolbecauseofacontagiousdisease,youarerequestedtocalltheHumanServicesDepartment(459-3030)toreporttheillnessandreceiveinstructionsastowhenthechildcanreturntoschool.

Parents are expected to make every effort to schedule student doctor and dentist appointments outside of schoolhours.However,whenthisisnotpossible,studentswillbeexcusedforthesespecialappointments.Pleaserequestanexcusefromthedoctor/dentist.

Shoulditbenecessaryforastudenttoleavetheschoolbuildingforanyreason,aparent/guardianmustsignhim/heroutintheofficeandsigninuponreturning.Aphonecallornotetotheteacherandofficeexplainingthereasonisrequired.

AchildattendingJamesMadisonSchoolon“SpecialPermission”fromtheDistrictwhohasexcessiveabsencesmayhavethat“SpecialPermission”revokedandbeaskedtoattendhis/her“HomeSchool”.

Tardiness

Promptarrivalatschoolisexpectedofallstudents.Latearrivalandnotbeingreadyforinstructionby8:45a.m.disruptsclassesandcauseslossofinstructiontimeforallstudents.Anychildwhoarrivesatschoolafter8:45a.m.isconsideredtardy.Iftardy,childrenmustobtainanadmittanceslipfromtheoffice.

AchildattendingJamesMadisonSchoolon“SpecialPermission”fromtheDistrictwhoisexcessivelytardymayhavethat“SpecialPermission”revokedandbeaskedtoattendhis/her“HomeSchool”.

BAND/ORCHESTRA

OurstudentsmayparticipateinBandandOrchestraduringthefifthgradeyear.Alimitednumberofrentalinstrumentsareavailabletostudents.

BICYCLES

Pleaserememberthatourcityordinancerequirestheregistrationofallbicycles.Inaddition,wesuggestthatstudentsrecordtheirbicycleserialnumbers.Whentravelingtoandfromschoolstudentsmustobeyalltrafficregulations.Theschoolassumesnoresponsibilityforbicycles.However,provisionshavebeenmadetosafeguardbikesbyrequiringthemtobeproperlyparkedandlockedintheschoolbikeracks.Bicycles,skateboards,scootersareNEVERtoberiddenonschoolgrounds.

BUSSING

Thefollowingruleshavebeenestablishedinordertoinsurethesafetyofallstudentswhoridebusses:

1.Useonlythebusandbusstopassigned. 2.Orderlybehaviorisrequiredatthebusstop. 3.Remainseated,facingfront,whenthebusisinmotion. 4.Talkquietlyandmakenounnecessarynoise. 5.Donottalktothedriverunlessitisnecessary.

6.Keepheadandarmsinsidethebus. 7.Donotlittertheinsideofthebusorthrowanythingoutthewindow. 8.Bequietwhenthebusiscrossingrailroadtracks. Infractionsoftheaboveruleswillbebroughttotheattentionoftheparents.Continualabuseofbusprivilegeswillresultinthedenialoftransportation.

ParentswhowishtomakerequestsforchangesinroutesorstopsshouldcontacttheJamesMadisonSchoolofficeat459-3585.Studentsandparentsareencouragedtonotifytheschoolimmediatelyofanysafetyhazardsthattheyhaveobservedduringbusoperations.

CANCELLATIONOFSCHOOL Cancellationofschooltakesplaceonlyduringextraordinarycircumstancessuchasextremeweather,equipmentfailure,orpubliccrisis.Theschoolboardandadministratorsareawareofthehardshipthatcanbecausedbyanabruptcancellation.Therefore,schoolwillnotbecancelledunlessasignificantsafetyriskhasbeencreatedbyunusualcircumstances.

Everypracticalmeansisusedtonotifyparentsofanimpendingcancellation,includingradio,TV,newspapers,useoftheautomatedSchoolMessengersystem,Twitter,Facebook(bothSASDandJamesMadison)aswellasSASDandJMwebsites.Intheunusualcircumstancewhereschoolmustbecancelledduringtheschoolday,wewilldeterminethatallstudentshavesatisfactorytransportationandsupervisionattheirhomebeforereleasingthemfromschool.

DANGEROUSWEAPONSPOLICY

Nopersonmaypossess,bearmedwith,use,orstoreadangerousweapononanyschoolproperty,onanybus,oratanyschoolrelatedactivity.Dangerousweaponsaredefinedasanyobjectthatiscapableofinflictingbodilyharmorpropertydamage,specificallyincludingsuchthingsasguns,knives,screwdrivers,metalknucklesandothers.

Studentsviolatingthispolicywillbereferredtothepolice,suspendedforupto5daysandmaybereferredtotheBoardofEducationwitharecommendationforexpulsionfromtheDistrict.

TheRightsandResponsibilitiesHandbookalsocoversthreatsto,orfalseinformationregardingattemptstodestroyschoolpropertybymeansofexplosives.

DRESSCODE Apparelthatisdisruptivetotheeducationalenvironmentmaynotbewornatschoolorschoolactivities.Thisincludes,butisnotlimitedto,itemsthatcontainprofaneorindecentwords;promotetheuseofillegaldrugs,alcoholortobacco;containstatementsordepictionsofasexualnature;clothingassociatedwithgangstoincludethosethathavecrownsofanynature.

1. Studentswillnotbeallowedtobebarefoot,wearhats,hoodsorcapsinthebuilding.

2. Croptopsortanktopswithspaghettistraps,orback-lessshirtsarenotpermitted.

3. Stomachsmustbecovered;thismeansshirtsandpants/shortsmustmeetandundergarmentsmustnotbe

visible. 4. Studentsaretodressappropriatelyforschoolbothindoorsandoutdoors.Duringwinterweatherweexpectour

studentstospendtimeoutsideduringmorning,lunch,andafternoonrecessunlessthewindchillisatorbelow0degrees.WechecktheinternetforSheboyganweatherbeforesendingthestudentsoutonverycolddaystomakesureyourchild’ssafetyandwell-beingareaddressed.

5. Shortsandskirtsshouldallowthestudenttoparticipateinnormalschoolactivitieswithoutadisruption.Remember,

theshortsorskirtmaylooklongenoughwhenthestudentisstanding,butshortsandskirtstendtobecomemuchshorterwhenastudentbendsdownorsits.

6. Studentswhocometoschoolwearinginappropriateclothingwillberequiredtoreplaceorcovertheclothing.This

mayincludeastudentcontactinghomeforappropriateclothingorwearingtheirartshirtovertheirclothing. 7. Studentsinanelementaryschoolshouldnotbewearingmakeup,exceptforextenuatingcircumstances.

8. Alldecisionsareatthediscretionofthestaffandadministration.

EAGLEEXPECTATIONS JamesMadisonutilizesthePositiveBehaviorInterventionsandSupport(PBIS)frameworktomaximizeacademicsuccessandprovideasafelearningenvironmentforallstudents.OurEagleExpectationsencouragestudentsto:BeSafe,BeRespectful,andBeResponsible. CoolToolLessons EagleExpectationsaretaughtandreinforcedthroughouttheyearduringCoolToolbehaviorallessons.CoolToolsaretaughteachThursdayduringassemblyorintheclassroom. Acknowledgements StudentsfollowingtheEagleExpectationsanddemonstratingotherpositivebehaviorsmaybeacknowledgedbyastaffmemberwithanEagleTicket.Ticketsmaybeturnedinforweeklyprizedrawings.WealsohaveSchoolStoreandextrarecesstrade-indays.WecelebrateJamesMadisonstudents’successeswiththeclassroomTravelingEagleTrophy.TheclassroomreceivingthemostnominationsforfollowingtheExpectationoftheMonthearnsthetrophyandanicecreamparty.Attheendofeachquarter,incentiveactivitiesareheldtocelebratethepositivebehaviorsofeveryoneatMadison.FamiliesmaycompletetheMadisonFamilyEagleAwardChecklisttogethertoreceivetheFamilyEagleAward.Thechecklistencouragesfamiliestoparticipateinpositiveactivitiesathome,atschool,andtogetherasafamilyatschool.AwardsarepresentedonFridayduringtheEagleTicketdrawing. HARASSMENTOFSTUDENTS

JamesMadisoniscommittedtomaintainingapositivelearningenvironmentthatisfreeofanyformofharassment,includingethnic,gender,raceorreligion,intimidationtowardandbetweenstudents,ordirectedtowardsaspecialneedsstudent.Itis,therefore,thepolicyatJamesMadisonthattheseharassmentswillnotbetoleratedinanyformandwilltakeallnecessaryandappropriateactiontopreventandeliminatethem,includingdisciplineofoffendingpersonsandreferraltootheragencieswhereappropriate.

HOMEWORK

Homeworkisimportant.Itisanextensionofthelearningthattakesplaceinschool.Studentsareencouragedtodo15–20minutesofhomeworkpernight.Homeworkcanprovidepracticethatreinforcesclassroomlearningandcanprovideopportunitiesforindependentstudy,research,andcreativethinking.Parentscanhelptheirchildrenbyarrangingaquiet,comfortableplaceforthestudenttoworkandbyseeingthatassignmentsarecompleted.

ILLNESSORINJURY

Incaseofillnessorinjuryachildwillbecaredfortemporarilybytheschoolnurseoramemberoftheschoolstaff.Schoolpersonnelwillrenderfirstaidtreatmentonly.Incidentsaredocumentedandareportissenthomewiththechild.Ifemergencymedicaltreatmentisnecessarytheparentswillbecontacted.Ifparentsarenotavailablethechildwillbetakentotheemergencyroomatthehospital.Remember,anemergencyphonenumberwhereparentscanbereachedandthenameandphonenumberofthestudent’sfamilydoctormustbeonfileatschool.

IMMUNIZATIONS

State law requires that every childwho is admitted to public school have evidence of successful immunizations. A studentimmunizationrecordistobecompletedforthispurpose.Age/graderequirementsareavailableintheschooloffice.

LIBRARY

Thelibraryisopenonaregularlyscheduledbasisandissupervisedbythelibrarystaff.Libraryclassesareheldforallstudentsinthebuildingforthepurposeoflibraryinstructionaswellasfortheenjoymentofthematerialsandbooks.

MEDICATIONPOLICY

Weunderstandthatchildrenmayneedtotakemedicationduringtheschoolday.Toinsurethesafetyofallofourchildren,thedistricthaswrittenpoliciestoguidegivingchildrenmedicine.Thesepoliciesrequire: 1.Fornon-prescriptionmedications:Parent/Guardianwrittenauthorizationisrequired. 2.Forprescriptionmedications:Parent/GuardianwrittenauthorizationandPractitionerwrittenauthorizationisrequired. 3.Nomedicationwillbeadministeredbyschoolpersonneloritsagentsuntiltheconsentformsarecompletedand

onfilewiththeschool.MedicationauthorizationandadministrationformswillbekeptandstoredconfidentiallyasrequiredunderWis.Stat.118.29(4).

4.Allmedicationmustbeintheoriginalcontainerlabeledwiththestudent’sname,correctdosage,timeandquantity tobegiven.Allprescriptionmedicationmustbeintheoriginalcontainerlabeledfromthepharmacy.

5.Parentsareresponsibleforbringingmedicationtoschoolandpickingupanyunusedmedicationwithin10daysafterthe medicationisdiscontinued.Studentsarenotallowedtotransporttheirmedicationfromschool.Bylaw,school personnelmaynotcuttablets.Ifyourchildneedstoreceivehalfatablet,havethisdoneathomeorbythepharmacy fillingtheprescription.Currentschoolpolicydoesnotallownon-FDAapproveddrugs(herbalmedication)tobe administeredatschool.

Aparent/teacherconferenceisscheduledforeachchildtwotimesperyear.HOWEVER,weencourageyoutomeetwithyourchild’steacher,eitherinpersonorbyphonewheneveryouhaveaconcern.Parentconferencesaredesignedtoprovide:

PETS

Studentsandfamiliesareveryproudoftheirpets.However,therehavebeenincreasinghealthrisksforchildrenduetopetsbeingbroughtintoschoolsandchildcarefacilities.Therefore,petswillnotbeallowedtobebroughtintotheschool,classroomsoronschoolgroundsforstudentprojects,showandtell,etc.Ifyoufeelyouhaveextenuatingcircumstances,pleasecontacttheprincipal.

PLAYGROUNDSUPERVISION

Schoolstaffwillsupervisetheplaygroundbeginningat8:20a.m. Othersupervisedplaytimesarethelunchandafternoonrecesses.Theplaygroundisnotsupervisedafterschoolandstudentsareexpectedtoleaveforhomeimmediatelyfollowingdismissal.

TheJamesMadisonP.T.O.(ParentTeacherOrganization)isanimportantpartofourschool’ssuccess.AllofourparentsareconsideredJamesMadisonPTOmembersandareurgedtoactivelyparticipate.MeetingsarescheduledmonthlyatintheIMC.Pleaseseetheschoolcalendarfordates.

RECESS

Weatherpermitting,studentsaregiven2recesseseachday.Whenthewindchillfactorisatorbelow0degrees,studentswillnotplayout-of-doors.Alwaysdressyourchildforoutsiderecess.
