    In preparing the Key to Exercises for New Testament Greek, I have sought to con-vey the sense of the Greek constructions (e.g., tense aspect, mood, case, or structure), sometimes with the consequence of awkward English expressions. There are at least a dozen versions of the New Testament that may be consulted for smooth, idiomatic English. The intent here is to provide a translation of Greek that shows how the Greek writers express themselves and that calls to the students mind some of the possible alternatives conveyed by a given Greek construction.

    A word of exhortation: Use this key as a consultant whom you visit to test your work. Do not use the key as a substitute for your own efforts at translation! Used as a substitute, the key will be a crutch that will hinder learning. Used as a consultant, the key may become a friend that will prod you to a more perceptive understanding and greater precision in properly handling the Word of God.

    We have made changes to the original Key to Exercises in several areas. First, some of the changes here reflect modifications to the original exercises in New Testament Greek. A few exercises have been replaced; others have been modified. Then, because the revised edition of New Testament Greek now has English-to-Greek exercises, this revised Key to Exercises provides Greek translations of those exercises as well. But be-cause there are often several possible correct answers to an exercisedue especially to the variability in Greek sentence structure and the lack of context provided for each exercisewe have greatly expanded the number of suggested alternative read-ings. Finally, a number of footnotes have been added to provide discussion of various translation issues that may arise in the course of doing the exercises.

    8 On the dative case used here, see above, ch. 7, ex. B.2. and its accompanying footnote. It is a common occurrence that the first of more than one subject of a verb will be emphasized. In such a case, the verb usually precedes the and, if the first subject is singular, the verb will likewise be singular. This occurs even though the nominative case indicates that the second subject (making a plurality) also participates in the action of the verb. In this exercise, the verb would be , and the sentence might read . Observe that case alone tells you that the disciples are subjects, not objects, of the verb.
