Australian Premium Feeds is a West Australian owned and operated Chaff manufacturing business.

Our family was making chaff three generations ago and today we are combining the tradition with modern machinery. With a family history of producing chaff and feed for livestock and horses Australian Premium Feeds brings a long running knowledge of animal needs along with a modern understanding of nutritional requirements.

Our vision for the future is to produce the best quality Chaff and Hay products possible by using state of the art equipment and techniques to produce highly sought after products for both the domestic and export markets. Australian Premium Feeds are members of AFIA (Australian Fodder Industry Association) which is the national peak body for the country’s hay and silage industry. It aims to enhance production and trade through programs that encourage product quality and industry profitability.

We are also members of the SFMCA (Stockfeed Manufacturers Council of Australia). The SFMCA operates FeedSafe® as the Quality Assurance Accreditation Program for the Australian stock feed industry with APF being the only West Australian chaff manufacturer to attain FeedSafe® accreditation.

ADF, DDM, ME, DE, CP, WSC and NDF are all expressed on a Dry Matter (DM) basis.

ADF = Acid Detergent Fibre - The residue that remains after extraction of plant material with an acid detergent solution. ADF gives a useful indication of the plant material that is indigestible to ruminants.

DDM = Digestible Dry Matter - The difference between the DM consumed and the DM excreted in the faeces, expressed as a percentage of the DM consumed. DDM is estimated using a laboratory procedure calibrated against DDM values for feedstuffs measured in feeding trials with live animals, usually sheep.

ME = Metabolisable Energy - The energy in the feed available to the ruminants to maintain body activity and growth etc. ME is calculated from DDM and is expressed as Mega Joules (MJ) per kg DM.

DE = Digestible Energy - The feed energy retained in the digestive tract of horses that is potentially available to be used. DE is calculated from DDM and is expressed as Mega Joules (MJ) per kg DM.

CP = Crude Protein - The amount of true protein and non-protein-nitrogen in a feed that ultimately provides the building blocks of the body, the amino acids. CP is determined as Nitrogen content x 6.25.

WSC = Water Soluble Carbohydrates - The readily fermentable plant sugars that are extracted by water solutions and are being used as a palatability attribute for Export Cereal Hay. High levels are desirable.

NDF = Neutral Detergent Fibre - The residue remaining after extraction of plant material with a neutral detergent solution, being mostly cell wall material. NDF contains hemi-cellulose that may be digestible.

Both hays have fairly modest ADF and NDF values reflecting that they are not very fibrous and these attributes along with the reasonably high WSC values are reflected in the DDM, and ME values being quite respectable, but not as high as some Oat hays tested this season. CP values are not very high, but in the range of many Oat hays analyzed this season and the hay with the lower CP value has the higher WSC value and vice versa as is often the case with cereal hays.
