President’s report

Greetings Members,

We have just completed another exciting year for the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club.

The 2016-2017 season has certainly capped off a number of exciting milestones for Jan Juc SLSC. I have personally enjoyed meeting so many different members over the past twelve months across a broad cross section of the club. During this short time, it highlighted to me just how many wonderful people we have involved in our club in so many different ways, which contributes to its outstanding culture.

Although we like to consider ourselves a small club, in reality we are a large Victorian club that provides opportunities to members in all areas of Surf Life Saving. The core purpose of our club is our patrols, however we understand that people become involved in Life Saving for a variety of reasons and we need to support their involvement to ensure they remain involved. Surf Life Saving is changing rapidly and as a club we will continue to adjust to the changes Surf Life Saving Australia, Life Saving Victoria and other stakeholders place upon us. To do this we have continued to build capability across all areas of our club, Life Saving, Training, Competition, Juniors/Nippers, Fund Raising, Administration, Finance & Governance and Building Redevelopment. We will continue to see changes in all areas as the movement continues to evolve.

A huge thank you to each of the Board Members responsible for each area, Andrew, Matt, Geoff, Brad, Bec, Davina, Sean and Tim - without their sacrifice and commitment this club would not continue to move forward. A special mention must also go to Sue and Meagan working in our office, your support is greatly appreciated.

We have been fortunate this season in obtaining visits from a number of high profile government figures, Prime Minister - Malcolm Turnbull, Deputy Premier of Victoria - James Merlino, Federal Member – Sarah Henderson, State Member - Andrew Katos which all led to securing key funding commitments from the Federal Government $2 million, State Government $2 million and Local Government of $250 k. These funding commitments were significant steps towards achieving our single biggest strategic objectives on the Board’s agenda – our clubhouse redevelopment. Finally, I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to all our members, club sponsors, event coordinators, Patrol Captains, trainers, assessors, Age Managers, coaches, Bar Manager and RSA volunteers, General Committee members, Audit and Risk committee members and Building Subcommittee members for your support this season and look forward to seeing you all back next season. Go Juc!

Life Membership Inductions

Daryl Moss - Life Member

Congratulations to Darryl Moss on being elevated to Life Member status, approved at the 2016 Annual General Meeting and presented at the 2017 Presentation Night.

Mossy joined the Club for the 1996/97 season, mainly to take on and lead coaching of competitors and since has become an outstanding member in all areas of the Club. His contributions cover continued coaching in competition, committee positions, carnival official, organisation of many social and fundraising functions, training and assessing of members in lifesaving disciplines and Club sponsorship. Donations have included boards, racks, lifesaving equipment, trophy cabinets and clubhouse fixtures. Mossy lifted the profile of the Golf Classic, generating large funds for the Club.

He has been awarded a 20 Year Patrol Service Medal and has recently been rewarded by Life Saving

Victoria/Surf Life Saving Australia, as Volunteer of the Year for both the state and nationally. A worthy recipient of this honour – Well Done!

Vice-President’s report

Another hectic season has come and gone, and Jan Juc SLSC has fulfilled its primary objective of keeping the beach safe.

Congratulations to those who have gained awards and up-skilled themselves through the many courses run throughout the year. Skills and competencies gained through life saving can add to many aspects of your life personally and professionally.

It is also great to see the competition section growing, I look forward to seeing more Juc Competitors on the podium at the Australian Championships, in the years to come.

One of the roles of the Vice President is organising the Highway Collections; I would like to personally thank the Intersection Collection volunteers; you made the task much easier.

I look forward to an exciting year ahead with the Club redevelopment.

Go Juc!

Secretary's report

As another season fades away to become statistics in a computer system or memories of patrols both hot and cold days, Bronze camp antics, carnival highlights, trips away, nippers learning and excelling in the surf, golf days (including Bondo’s irreverent humour) or a packed out Grand Final Lunch and not forgetting one of the best Presentation Nights in a long time. It’s time to look to the future with excitement and enthusiasm - with a new building now well and truly within the realms of possibility; a wave of talented juniors coming through in lifesaving and competition; continued training providing updated and qualified lifesaving members on the beach - these skills also being useful in life outside the Club. I would like to acknowledge the following members for their efforts –

• Years of Patrol Service • Craig Schmidt – 45 years • Dean Sibun – 30 years • Michael Sheppard – 20 years • Jeff Hunter – 20 years • Leigh Ryan – 10 years • Brian Happ – 10 years • Lisa Happ – 10 years • Mitchell Payne – 10 years • Kate Walsh (Mumme) – 10 years

• Another grand effort by Davina Jackson in the Lifesaving Skills Development department with hundreds of awards /upskills being achieved.

• All those involved with the Building Redevelopment, this has been a huge time consuming commitment with much frustration and now a light at the end of the tunnel – hooray!

My Thanks to Sue Bettanin who has been a great support to me in carrying out my Secretarial duties, one day I will learn all the ins and outs of the various computer systems we use. Wearing my long time patrol hat, once again it was disappointing to see that 1370 hours were lost due to No Shows. Over the season Bec Johnson reminded members (via messages) of the processes of obtaining substitutes and at least notifying Patrol Captains of your unavailability. – It’s not that hard.

So, 2017/18 here we come all fired up and ready to go!

Geoff Thompstone

Secretary

Lifesaving Services - Patrols

I’d like to start this report by thanking all of our patrolling member’s for their service this season. In a day and age where we all have so many commitments, you should all be commended on taking time out of your busy schedules, whether it be, spending precious time with family and friends, work or study and other social commitments. On average, our members volunteered approximately 20 hours to patrolling service this season to provide a safe aquatic environment for beach goers at Jan Juc, which is greatly appreciated.

This season saw a revamp of the of the patrol roster with some of our younger members stepping up in to leadership roles as Patrol Captains and Vice Captains, and new patrols created. We also had Patrol 1 - “The Legends Patrol” return for their 27th season patrolling together as “Patrol 1” however these guys have been patrolling together for over 35 years and were previously known as Patrol 2.

Our longest “Standing” Patrol Captain, John Van Ooi has been Patrol Captain for 35 years together with Brian Makin as his Vice Captain (however Brian taking leave of absence, due to illness this season, he was there at each patrol in spirit). We look forward to having Brian (Changa) back on the beach next season.

Patroller of the Month

We saw the inaugural Patroller of the Month awards given out to one Bronze Medallion and one Surf Rescue Certificate holder each month from January to March. This was a new initiative where members of the patrol voted for their peers at the end of each patrol. Votes were tallied at the end of each month and the awards given. Congratulations to:

Charlie Dent & Emily Suckling - January Daniel Smith & Jason Scammell - February Steve Scammell & Olivia Jenkins - March

Finally I would like to thank everyone in my Lifesaving Services Sub Committee for making my job so much easier through out the season, if it weren’t for their support managing their relevant areas the Lifesaving Services department would not have been able to run as smoothly. Special thanks to:

Lifesaving Services - First Aid

The start of season 2016-2017 kicked off nicely with all gear in excellent condition and ready for gear

inspection, all passing without question. The first aid room was clean, polished and organised; with

thanks to Rass and my Mum for the pre-season cleaning assistance.

Gear was well maintained throughout the season, my appreciation goes out to all members and Patrol

Captains that helped ensure gear was functioning and clean at the end of each patrol. It was also great

to receive many phone calls from patrol members letting me know when gear was running low or

equipment needed attending to, this certainly makes the role a lot easier to balance with work

commitments and helps ensure our life savers have all they need to provide the best possible care to our

beach goers.

A few special mentions again this season to Rass, Isabella and Davina whom all assisted in keeping the

room tidy, floor sand free and gear stocked up when I needed assistance. Much appreciated!

This season saw a continued interest and focus on providing high quality first aid assistance to the

members of public that fall into our care. The First Aid team assigned for Bells Bash being a prime

example of excellent skills, teamwork and compassionate care delivery. Davina again put together a very

experienced First Aid team, including paramedics, nurses and doctors whom were all ready and willing

to handle the incoming unwell customers! The First Aid room was again very busy for the extent of the

Bells Bash with our First Aid trolley, St John’s First Aid trolley and a make-shift floor bed all seeing plenty

of action - it will certainly be lovely to have more room, more storage and extra trollies when the new

club rooms are finished. Despite the tight space the team worked very well together and patients were

well monitored and cared for, many thanks again to those involved.

First Aid assessments went very smoothly this season with all courses having an increased focus on this

area to ensure participants were assessment ready and highly skilled for beach work. First aid courses are

this year being offered during the off season (July 2017) to up-skill members early as well as the usual in

season training program, great to see this course remains popular among members of all ages!

As always I have really enjoyed the First Aid Manager role and the general friendly, casual and

welcoming environment of Jan Juc SLSC. Looking forward to season 2017-2018!

Cheers, Jemma Ugrin First Aid Manager

Lifesaving Services - IRB

After a nice smooth running season it’s time for the IRB report so buckle up kiddies and prepare to have your socks knocked off. First of all, I want to give a huge shout out and thank you to the handful of people who were always there to lend a hand this season, I couldn’t have done it without you guys. Secondly, congratulations to those of you who have obtained your IRB awards. I know it’s not easy but eventually all the hard work paid off. To those of you who wish to get either your Crew or Driver’s we are hopefully looking to start a course in the upcoming months (numbers permitting).

At the start of the season we sold two boats, two out of service motors and our old road trailer. We were able to purchase a new moveable IRB rack. This rack can store five boats, three inflated boats and three rolled up on top, minimising the space needed to store them. In the upcoming months, we are hoping to receive our new boat - a Gen 2 388 Thundercat soft hull, bringing our total boat number to seven. The idea behind having this number is to eventually be self sufficient for the Danger 1000 and not have to borrow any boats from other clubs.

That’s all from me have warm winter and I’ll see you all on the beach.

Hamish Heather

IRB Manager

Lifesaving Skills Development - Training and Assessment

Another successful year, 2016/17 season has seen the continued growth in Patrolling Awards skills of our members; particularly with the enthusiasm of our Under 18 members. This ensures we provide ongoing efficient community service for the beach users, whilst gaining valuable life skills. The Lifesaving Skills Development Division continues to focus on expanding mentoring of members into advanced award roles, including those of Training and Assessing roles. These are vital to support longevity in this area.

Our Awards began in July 2016 and have carried through until May 2017, with the majority of awards being gained in the first six months of the season. This seems to suit the lifesaving calendar as by December competition has commenced and families have many other summer commitments. This season Jan Juc members gained a total of three hundred and seventy seven Lifesaving awards; three hundred and twenty nine new awards and forty eight people up-skilling there Spinal Management award. With sixty six members gaining new Surf Rescue Certificate, Bronze Medallion, Resuscitation or First Aid this means two hundred and twenty nine people are eligible to patrol and help with water safety. Congratulations everyone another awesome effort to improve skills and knowledge to continue to provide a community service to ensure best possible public safety on Jan Juc beach. Please see following pages for lists of new Lifesaving awards gained. Congratulations to Isabella Heather on winning the TOFF award; points scored for the many awards she gained, closely followed by several of our Junior members.

Some skills changes in award training this season included: • Asthma Management - Introduction of 4-6 breaths of 4-6 puffs of Salbutamol (Ventolin) ...

confusing? Yes, so now ANZCOR has returned to 4 breaths each 4 puffs every 4 minutes. • Spinal Management – the emphasis is now on manual stabilisation of the neck & spine. Collars are

no longer to be used by Lifesavers; however we keep some in the cupboard in case the Paramedics wish to use them. Several new techniques to manoeuvre patients on and off the spinal board were introduced, along with the patient lowering themselves to the ground in a walk up situation. All techniques we will continue to practise.

• Compressions – the rate of the compressions increased from the previous range 100-120 per minute, to a new 120 compressions per minute. Confusing for some at first as this is not the actual number per minute because we have to allow for breaths; rather this is the RATE of 2 compressions per second, 30 compressions in 15 seconds, which Jan Juc SLSC are already teaching. Patrol Comp still remains slightly different.

• IRB – more detailed Skills Maintenance, and at all assessments - Crew are now required to dive out of boat, using rescue tube to retrieve the patient, whilst the driver completes figure 8 solo driving.

• Trainer and Assessor theory Units of Competency – as of January 1 to teach these units you now are required to hold a Diploma of Vocational Education and Training, rather than Cert IV Training and Assessing. This means as very few of us have the Diploma, these theory Units are now to be completed through LSV, thankfully some are on line and via webinar.

There are more changes for next season, which include Anaphylaxis management and old Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate (ARTC) to be up-skilled to the newer ART (AID). This ART (AID) upgrade may be run at Skills Maintenance time and will affect about twenty five of our members.

Seventy one new assessments ran at Jan Juc this season, in addition to sixty six groups of various Skills Maintenance; a mammoth effort from volunteer Assessors and Trainers. On behalf of Jan Juc SLSC members, thank you all so much for all your time and effort. Whilst two people gained their new Assessor Theory Units of Competency and three people worked hard to gain their Certificate IV in Training & Assessing, an enthusiastic twenty five people gained new Training Officer Theory Units of

Competency, with the majority under eighteen years old and raring to teach next season. We look forward to working with you all.

Once Life Saving Victoria personnel process your award, Certificates for Qualifications and Statements of Attainment are emailed directly from SLSA Surfguard to your email address listed on your membership. This usually happens within the month after you undertake assessment of the award. It is now highly recommended members utilise an email account not associated with school, as school leavers will be unable to access their certificates. Thank you to all LSV personnel concerned for their prompt service. If you have a Medallion associated with an award gained and have not yet received this please contact Sue, either by email or during office hours.

Special mention and thank you to several people who have played major roles in our success this season: • All the parents and helpers at SRC course who helped with water safety, food and resource prep

and this year undertook new roles in helping with First Aid scenario training. • The Adult Bronze Medallion Group, including four returning Bronze Medallion holders up-skilling

after many years away. • Congratulations to Daniel Smith and Isabella Heather for their massive time and effort in training

Surf Rescue Certificate and Adult Bronze Medallion courses, helping with training of IRB awards and Spinal Management training, over sixty and eighty hours respectively. This, amongst other efforts this season, has seen them both awarded Jan Juc SLSC’s Most Outstanding Juniors, along with being recognised by Surf Coast Shire with 2017 Youth Awards.

• Alanah Carroll, Cassie Moss and hard working team for delivering another successful and action packed December Bronze Medallion Camp.

• Mark Falzon, Jemma Ugrin, Hamish Heather and teams for having Lifesaving resources maintained ready for course training.

• Senior Assessors - Jemma Ugrin for again stepping into the Assessor in Charge role on several occasions this season, another worthy year as Rosemary Zuluaga Award recipient. Jemma continued to work in conjunction with Daryl Moss, leading a team in mentoring newer Trainers and Assessors. Will McCance was welcomed into Facilitating advanced awards.

• Geoff ‘Rass’ Thompstone continues his many hours of administration in Skills Maintenance processing, along with Sue Bettanin and Meagan Mifsud for behind the scenes tireless administrative and financial work.

Six Assessors helped with our Chris J Allen Patrol Competition for the most efficient patrol on our beach. Whilst many focus on the points and vying for the coveted towels, facilitating learning on the day and helping to improve techniques is important too. Next season we plan to work with the Life Saving Services team who will mentor lifesavers in their techniques at the start of the patrol season. Congratulations to winners Patrol 4 – Bartlett Patrol.

With the Clubhouse Redevelopment much closer to reality, award courses for next season have commenced already. Timing and location of courses will be adapted accordingly. Enjoy the season break. We look forward to seeing you back on the beach in Spring.

Special Event First Aid Thank you to all who have helped with this season’s First Aid teams at Jan Juc’s Summer Carnival, IRB Carnival, Bells Bash and Danger Swim Series. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated. Not biased at all ... I think we have awesome First Aid teams with much depth of knowledge and experience, ensuring the coordinating and events run smoothly. See you all next season for our twentieth Danger Swim and fifteenth Bells Bash.

Patrol Service Years Register A Patrol Service Years Register has been developed through referencing Surfguard records, Annual

Reports and Patrol Logs where possible. Whilst we have endeavoured to be accurate, understandably,

this is not complete as some records have been lost or damaged beyond recognition and thus disposed

of. The register contains members who have patrolled or completed water safety in the past two years,

along with those who have received medals for years of service. Please check your details, if you have

evidence to add, please contact myself or Sue. Remember to sign the Patrol log when on duty so we

may continue to update the register. See pages 7 and 8 for Register.

Juniors' report

The overall Junior area continues to go from strength-to-strength off the back of the continuing growth and success of the Nipper program, under the leadership of Brett Thompson again. With “Thommo” having been in this role for the past few seasons – and needing to pass the baton to others within the nipper cohort – it is vital that we see an increased number of parents from this area step up into leadership roles to ensure the success of the program continues for new families and siblings who join.

The Surf Education “Summer” Program had a separate focus to the general Nipper training program, with Ash Smith leading the crew of Junior Age Group Managers. This was a wonderful concept, giving one of our older Junior members the opportunity to develop their leadership and organisational skills. Ash did a fantastic job organising this group and ensuring resources were allocated appropriately with a number of Juniors juggling this commitment with their part time employment. Most outstanding Age Group Manager awardees for this season were Finbar Kinna and Brooke O’Brien. The vision is to imbed this approach moving forward to continue this important development opportunity. Thanks Ash for your hard work!

Junior Club Captain Emma Threadgold was an amazing source of enthusiasm, energy and passion across the Junior area this season. She took the lead in setting up the Junior Sub-committee, working to mentor the team and encourage their participation and organisation of a number of social events. This role is a vital one within the club, ensuring a link between the Junior (particularly Under 15 and above) cohort and the Board. A process of supporting this role and looking to elevate the individual(s) who take on this position into more senior leadership roles, and ultimately onto the Board, is something that needs real focus moving forward to support a regeneration of our leadership stocks from within those ‘coming through the ranks’, who have so much to add to the future direction of the Club.

Millie McDonald lead the hugely successful “Girls Big Day Out” where we hosted a group of mainly Muslim girls from the Geelong area for a day of beach and water education and fun. The response from our Junior female members to support this event was fantastic, with almost a 1:1 ratio in place to welcome and encourage our guests in the unfamiliar environment of the Juc beach. The girls and Geelong City Council Multi-cultural Department contacts involved were rapt with how the day went with another planned for next season. Millie did a great job taking ideas from the LSV program and improving on them for a truly Juc experience for the girls in attendance.

A number of other events were planned and communicated to the wider club and Juniors area but unfortunately we had only limited commitment and interested in the opportunities provided. The Mystery Bus event held just prior to Christmas was the most successful, with eighteen Juniors enjoying a bus tour full of shenanigans, followed by time at Supertramp and then Fish and Chips and a swim at Eastern Beach. The group in attendance, which was from a wide range of age groups, had a great time, and thanks to Brooke O’Brien for organising this successful event. A second Mystery Bus, Awards Night and Carnival all received little to no interest forcing them to be cancelled. Trying to gain commitment and engagement from this group continues to be a real challenge, with the creation of a Juniors Facebook Page getting a good following but not delivering much additional support for activities. The Juniors, lead by Emma, also ran a Pasta Night for the Senior Competition Crew as well as the final Counter Meal. Great food was served at both but disappointing numbers particularly at the Counter Meal saw only a limited number benefitting from the delicious fare on offer. Junior member involvement in the Bash and Danger was again exceptional, with a large group putting their hands up to assist in the water safety and marshalling of the events. The Junior Bash was run entirely by juniors, organised and directed by Brooke O’Brien for the second year.

It was great to have some of our younger members take up the opportunities to attend the LSV Junior Development camps. Harry Jacoby and Millie Roberts attended the Under 13 camp, whilst Georgie Richards and Lucie Thompson attended the Under 15 camp. These are fantastic opportunities for younger members to meet like-minded peers from other clubs whilst being exposed to team building activities designed to develop their personal and leadership skills. As announced at the Presentation Night, the club acknowledged the contribution across a variety of areas of the club by two fantastic Junior members. Dan Smith was awarded the Most Outstanding Junior Male in recognition of his exceptional contribution, which included almost one hundred and sixty Patrol and Water Safety hours this season. Isabella Heather was awarded Most Outstanding Junior Female due to her significant involvement in the training and assessment areas of the club.

On a broader note, the number of Juniors taking on leadership roles within Patrols is a fantastic development within the club. As always, supporting those putting up their hands with active mentoring and support is vital to ensure they both learn and succeed when stepping into these roles. Equally, ensuring as a club we are not putting up barriers or unnecessary red-tape for the involvement of juniors trying to get more involved will assist in ensuring we do not lose our Junior members through frustrations and making it all too hard. The recent Board decision to return to not charging members for general courses and up-skills next season is a positive in this space, supporting the group we need to continue to add to their qualification in order to fulfil our patrol requirements.

Junior Club Captain's report

2016/2017 has been a great season for Juniors at Jan Juc SLSC. It was a pleasure to work with so many juniors throughout the season on some great projects for juniors.

We had the Girls Day Out in January, a multicultural surf education day for Muslim, Karen and Congolese girls. This was completely run by Milly McDonald, one of the junior subcommittee members. Well done Milly on a successful day! The junior race of the Bells Bash was again coordinated and delivered by a junior member. Well done to Brooke O’Brien for a brilliant organisational effort, it was great to see so many juniors band together to help out. In December we had the Mystery Bus tour to Supatramp followed by an evening swim and dinner at Eastern Beach. Well done to Brooke O’Brien for this one. And special mention to Georgia Gordon. These events have been run on junior energy and it’s great to see so many people involved, both organisationally and as a participant.

It has been a privilege to be Junior Club Captain this year and I am confident that we have left the juniors portfolio in a stronger position at the end of the season. I’m looking forward to seeing other juniors step up into roles over the coming seasons to carry on the good work.

Emma Thredgold Junior Club Captain

Nipper’s report

Another fantastic year was had by all our nippers with numbers hovering around the 300 mark again. Our season kicked off with the annual doorknock which again saw great numbers and some awesome fundraising done by all age groups, bringing in around $5,000 for the club.

Surf Ed continued on over the Christmas period with some great help from the usual suspects, although with one main change - one of our age group leaders moving into a leading role. Ash Smith did an amazing job and should be very proud of all her hard work which kept the Surf Ed program running smoothly. She was ably helped be Marcelle Korth who re-invigorated the Surf Ed booklet and was always looking for some sort of new angle for Surf Ed next year, we are all really looking forward to her ongoing upgrading of these booklets to keep them up to date, informative and most importantly FUN.

The Long program which commences in October and finishes at the Victorian Championships was again a huge success and I think everyone enjoyed a small break over the Surf Ed time, Our coaches work so hard during this program and with the introduction of the team manager for each age group, they were able to spend more time on the kids and less time on paperwork. I would really like to thank all coaches and team managers this year especially as they are the backbone of this program.

We have lots of awards during the year and always really great kids and families involved although the biggest award is our U14 nipper of the year, this year it went to Will McKenna who has been fantastic throughout his nipper career and I am sure, like our other nipper of the year winners, will become a future leader of the club.

I look forward after this season to moving to a different role within the junior program and also helping in anyway I can with the most important part of the club (NIPPERS). Thanks to all my helpers this season, you know who you are!!! With a special mention to Sal my wife and Sue in the office who both have taken a lot of extra weight off my shoulders this season.

Thanks everyone and look forward to next year!

Cheers

Thomo

Senior Competition

This year saw a new structure in the competition area, the area was broken up into specific groups and

assigned a manager, Pool comp – Lisa Happ, Surf Boats – Jon Ward, Lifesaving competition – Leigh

Bartlett, Board and Ski – Eugene Shanahan.

Our team managers were Roe Clapman, Eugene Shanahan, Mel Field, Cheryl Green.

More training sessions than ever were provided by a new coaching structure and the introduction of

more ski sessions and Friday fitness, a group fitness night for all club members.

Our coaching was headed by Zeb Walsh (Board and Ironman), Bruce Dunlop, Peter Currie, John Jacoby

(Ski) and Matt Bald, Clint Fraser, Brad Papworth (Friday Fitness). We had 74 people through our training

sessions with an average of thirteen across the three main sessions (Tues, Thurs and Sun). The week

consisted of three board sessions, two ski sessions and a single fitness session. In 2017/18 we are going

to introduce a beach/running session. In 2016/17 training started at the start of August, in 2017/18

training started in July.

Jan Juc had representatives in the state team that competed at the interstates in Maroochydore: Ollie

Watson, Tyler Shanahan, Drew Green, Kyalla Happ, Molly Green and Henry Van Til. We also had three

junior team members that competed in Manly: Jas Happ U13 and team captain, Darcy McKenna U13

and Stephane Reade U12.

Through Zeb we were fortunate enough to have Matt Bevalaqua ran a clinic for all our competitors prior

to the Jim Wall Ironman, it’s was great to see our competitors mixing with Matt and picking his brains

about training and racing. In 2017/18 we hope to have Matt and a female athlete to run the same clinic.

Manly/Freshwater carnival was held on the Australia Day weekend and Jan Juc had six competitors as

well as our junior state team members make the trip and compete, next year we hope to build on this

and expose more of our competitors to high quality racing.

The Victorian titles were held in Port Fairy in 2017 and Jan Juc had twenty eight competitors. We also

had nine competitors in the lifesaving competitions and fifteen competitors at the state endurance

champs. Jan Juc came third on the points table - an outstanding effort considering we have one of the

smallest teams.

Aussie titles were held in April, Jan Juc had fourteen competitors throughout the youth champs, first aid,

champion lifesaver and open carnival, and unfortunately due to the extreme weather conditions the

majority of the open champs were cancelled. The highlight of the youth champs was Henry Van Til’s gold

in the U15 Beach sprint. For five of our competitors it was their first experience at the championships.

I would like to thank all of my area managers, team managers, coaches, parents who officiated or helped

with set ups and pack ups, your help is greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to a bigger season in 2017/18.

Tim Watson

The Jan Juc team had nine competitors attend the Victorian Senior Pool Lifesaving Championships. Out of this small team every competitor received a state medal which was great. The atmosphere and support were fantastic and this team came third overall in the final point score - pretty amazing considering the size of the teams they were against. Well done everyone.

Senior Competition - Results - Australian Surf life Saving Championships

The Australian Surf life Saving Championships were held in North Kirra QLD, from the 25th of March to the 2nd of April.

Henry Van Til competed and won gold in the Under 14 Beach Sprint. Henry’s gold capped off an amazing year, winning the event for his age group in the Junior Victorian Championships and many junior carnivals during the year and also at senior carnivals in the Under 15 age group. Henry competed in heats, quarter and semi-finals before reaching the final. In a thrilling race - held under lights, in front of a big crowd and his team mates - Henry pulled away to win by about a metre.

The Youth Aussies, for the Under 14-15 age groups, were on the 25th and 26th of March. Jan Juc SLSC entered five competitors, Henry Van Til, Molly Green, Kyalla Happ, Puck Klaassen and Bella Robinson. Along with Henry’s success the girls also did themselves proud, Molly and Kyalla made the semi-final in the Surf Race, Molly made semi-final in the Iron Women and Bella made the semi-final in the Beach Sprint. Jan Juc SLSC also had two competitors in the Under 15 First Aid Competition - Jason Scammell and Lucie Thompson who both performed exceptionally well.

The Champion Lifesaving Events followed the Youth Aussies, with Jett Flexman finishing sixth in the Under 17 competition. Jett also teamed up with Finn Dripps to compete in the Under 17 First Aid Competition.

On the Wednesday the open competition started, Jan Juc SLSC had Ollie Watson, Drew Green, Jett Flexman, Finn Dripps, Tylah Shanahan, Kiah Shanahan and Sophie Costa competing in team events. Unfortunately due to the conditions, the cuts in the heats were very tight and we were unable to make it through to the next rounds. A highlight for the day was Drew making the final of the Open Surf Race.

Jett and Finn also competed in the 2km Run where Jett came fifth and Finn fifteenth. Finn also competed in the Under 17 Beach Flags where he progressed through a couple of rounds.

When the weather turned nasty on Thursday morning, the competition was put on hold for Thursday and Friday and ultimately the whole competition was cancelled to due water quality from all the rain and floods in the area.

Sponsorship & Fundraising - Events, Sponsors, Social Functions

Dear Fellow Members

Another season and year has past so quickly and once again as a club we delivered some outstanding events and social activities for our members and the wider community.

A large part of the year was also spent lobbying all levels of government for our much-needed anchor funding for the building redevelopment. After years of perseverance the moon’s finally aligned and we received the initial good news of Federal Government support ($2million), then followed the State Government support ($2 million) and recently we have confirmed support from the Surf Coast Shire ($250,000). The is an amazing achievement by the club and members involved to have $4.25 million committed by all levels government, giving us a strong platform towards releasing the dream of a new clubhouse.

This is just the start of the building fundraising with our Philanthropic Campaign commencing to assist raise the remaining funds to start the project. The Philanthropic Committee has set a target of raising $2 million. These funds will go towards the building with the goal of being debt free, transition costs whilst the clubhouse is under construction and future maintenance costs. We will be out approaching corporates and philanthropic organisations as well as our members to ensure this once in a generation landmark project is realised.

Sponsorship

The sponsorship space continues to be highly competitive with limited funds to go around for so many groups in our community. We greatly appreciate the support we obtain from our very loyal and dedicated sponsors.

I would like to recognise these companies for their continued support of our events and programs and encourage our members to support their services or products whenever you can.

Fundraising

The club conducts various fundraising events to assist with the day-to-day running of the club. These events have varied objectives with some to contribute financially and others to bring our members together socially and enjoy the club environment.

Again our hallmark events contributed significantly to the revenue for the club.

AFL Grand Final Eve Luncheon

The 3rd Annual AFL Grand Final Eve Lunch was held at the RACV Resort Torquay last October. Andrew ‘Flash’ Flanders as event manager again delivered with the talent and entertainment on offer for the day. The event continues to and become a must attend by not only members but most importantly non-members and corporates. Again we saw the numbers of attendees increase to over two hundred and fifty, many of who were not club members.

We would like to thank Hocking Stuart Torquay as our major partner for our 2016 event and for committing to being our major partner in 2017. This will be their third year as our major partner.

Net profit for the day was $22,422

Danger Swim Series and Bells Bash

The Danger and Bash continue to be our most high profile events for participation and member engagement on the season colander. It was fantastic to see over four hundred of our members put their hand up to assist with the running of these events over two gruelling days. Our volunteers come from a broad cross section of the club but with a common goal to have fun and host two great events.

Our numbers for the swim having stagnated over the past years, however we have continued to see a decline in our run numbers over the past four years. We are currently undertaking a review of all elements of the events to ensure we provide competitors with the best experience and we once again become a must do event.

We are committed as a board to continuing both events as they are a fantastic branding exercise for our club and more importantly are intrinsic to the social fabric and culture of our club.

Thank you gain to our four hundred volunteers over the two days who make these events the success that they are.

The net profit for the weekend topped $27,704.

The Juc Golf Classic

Daryl Moss continues to take the Golf Classic from strength to strength. Daryl set the target of a sell out again and achieved this comfortably with over thirty groups teeing up on the day and a waiting list that wanted to play.

The day was a great success from the venue to the on course entertainment to the post round meal and entertainment.

Congratulations to Daryl and his team of volunteers that again raised the bar with net income for the day reaching $25,344.

Nippers Door Knock

This is a fantastic opportunity for our Nippers to assist with club fundraising and understand the importance of it to the club. Kate Patience and her group of co-ordinators and counters did another stellar job of organising the Nippers and ensuring the day was a success. Thank you to all who participated and you should be proud of the $5,169 raised on the day.

Intersection Collection

Thanks to the great work done by Andrew Williams for taking on this vital role over the past season. The intersections are a great source of revenue for the club and also a great way for the members to interact and meet other members.

Over the season we conducted four collections: one in Geelong and three in Torquay.

The net income from the four collections totalled $20,632.

Groove-a-Thon Fundraiser Dinner

A new event for the year and what a fantastic event it was. Headlined by Groove-a-Thon the night was a smash hit with over one hundred and fifty people attending dressed up in retro 60’s & 70’s attire. A big thank you to Michelle Greene for all her hard work, dedication and attention to detail in making this a fantastic night for all those that attended.

The net profit for the night was $10,466

Social and Club Bar

The social activities and bar are great way for members to come together and enjoy being part of a great club environment.

Thanks to Cassie Moss and Alanah Carroll for taking this role on and providing some great nights and entertainment over the month of January.

The bar has again been a great place to relax for members thanks to the efforts of Ken and Elise Issac. The bar has been a great meeting point for our members on a Friday or Sunday. Ken and Elise’s hospitality has been a highlight for the season.

Club Shop

Thanks to Vikki McCoy and Kellie Papworth and their team of helpers. The girls have again done a fantastic job of streamlining and updating our merchandise range over the past twelve months and continue to look at more cost effective and on-trend ways to best represent our club. A big thank you to James ‘JT’ Taylor for all his working on rebranding our merchandise and really bringing it on trend.

Grants & Donations

Our ability to seek and obtain grants is thanks to the great work done by Jeremy Threadgold over the past three years. Jeremy remains anonymous around the club but does an enormous job away from it. Jeremy has now passed the baton onto Tina Elsworth and I am sure she will continue on from the great job done by Jeremy.

Over the past season the grants have allowed us to purchase much needed equipment and training across Life Saving Services and Competition.

Funds obtained from grants this year were $44,044.

To all our members on behalf of the executive and my self we would like to thank you for your contribution to another successful season. Without your contribution we cannot continue to the run the leading programs we do, buy new equipment, service existing equipment and plan for the future with a new clubhouse. We look forward to your continued support to ensure our club stays strong and we achieve our goal of redeveloping the clubhouse.

Building Redevelopment

With great pride l sit and write this report reflecting the progress made over the past twelve months. This project began for me seven years ago in a similar fashion to most great projects in a casual gathering with the back of an envelope drafting the long term need to redevelop the club.

The past twelve months has realised the most movement on the project to date. The key highlights being.

The State and Federal Government pledging two million dollars to the fund.

• Submission of the Coastal Management Act Plan to DELWP. • Presenting to the Victorian State Architects • Two community engagement sessions • Two club engagement sessions • Key User workshops • 3D Visualisations photos • Coastal Hazard Vulnerability Assessment - Water Technology • Geotechnical Report • Preliminary Structural Advice • Underground Services Scan + Survey GEO Scan • Authority Applications • Native Vegetation Assessment • Existing Use Rights Legal • Cultural Heritage Due Diligence

At present we are waiting the feedback from the State Architects for design feedback.

The next step is to finalise the permit application with authority, tender the project and commence building. Our Philanthropic Committee is planning a large push now the project is moving to the next level.

I must mention St Quentin & AD Architecture for their persistence and support to date with the project, many thanks. The club web site will continue to have update posts on progress.

Finance Report

This year the Club produced a surplus of $65,689, down $6,491 on the previous year. Income was down $34,405 on the last year with $23,867 relating to the insurance payout on the surf boat in FY16 and the balance being donations were down. Expenses were down $27,914 with a major reason being that two presentation nights were held in FY16 (May 15 and Apr 16) whereas this year only the

prepaid costs for the May function were incurred.

Operating income was up by $3,000 on last year. Fundraising was up $14,713. The combined Bash/Danger income was down slightly on the previous year and Brad Papworth and his team are working hard to reinvigorate these events. The Golf Classic had a big increase of $9,108 along with Other Fundraising that was boosted by the Groove-a-Thon and the provision of life saving services to the Ironman triathlon. Intersection collections were down with the last two down on volunteer numbers.

Outside Income took a big knock with Donations down by $19,706 and Grants/Subsidies down by $6,398. Grants are down partly due to less being received from the VESEP grant due to what was required by the Club. Club rental fell as it was difficult to take bookings when there was no certainty

how long the Club House would be available. There is likely to be no income from this for the next 18 months.

Trading profit in the bar surged ahead from $4,472 last year to $10,130 this year. Uniforms and Clothing fell from $3,020 to $1,976.

Administration costs are down on last year by $13,316. Employment costs are up reflecting the workload on Sue and Meagan who both do a power of work and provide fantastic support not just to the Board but also the wider membership who have queries or require assistance. This year the Club moved from a PC based accounting system to having it located in the “Cloud” which enables reports and analysis to be prepared remotely rather than physically at the Club House.

Operational Costs are up slightly last year with Juniors/Nippers being higher. This is in part to improving nipper packs, and purchasing more water safety vests etc.Fundraising expenses are almost the same notwithstanding that the Groove-a-Thon costs were included this year (Approx. $9.2k). Costs for the Bash & Danger were both down on the previous year with Brad Papworth and his team doing a great work to get the costs down ($45k this year versus $62k last year). Grand Final Eve costs were up but its overall profit improved by $5,200.

Competition Costs were down overall with Comp Fees down and Other Competition Costs up $5k. Other competition costs relate to Vics and Aussies and other costs. Previously these were included in Carnival Costs. Depreciation Costs were up with some older assets that were disposed of needing to

be written off.

Capital purchases during the year included: • IRB Storage Rack: $2,200

• IRB Motors & Fuel Cells x 2: $12,685

• Boards & Skis: $3,563

• Sewage Pump: $7,340

• Rescue Boards, Tubes & Shark Alarm: $3,787

It needs to be flagged that this coming year will see a large drop in income with the Club House, hopefully, being knocked down for redevelopment. This will also see the assets related to this written off of approximately $640,000. This will greatly affect the Profit and Loss for the year but not the cash position of the Club. Conversely, as funds are received from ALL sources for the redevelopment this

is recognised as income, despite that it will be spent immediately on a capital improvement. The effect may be that the Club over the next two financial years may post significant profits, unrelated to its normal trading activities.

I would like to finish by thanking ALL members who volunteer their time to ensure that Patrols, training for both seniors and nippers, the bar operates, the Club House is operational and that all our gear is kept in good order. Without this tireless work costs for this Club to function would be substantially higher, so a very big thank you from the beancounter.
