  • To whom it may concern,

I am a graduate student at the University of British Columbia in the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program. I am currently seeking a student internship to gain valuable experience in the design field. My education thus far has enabled me to understand design as a purposeful expression of ones creativity. I believe this understanding of architecture and interior design combined with an aspiration to explore innovative solutions, allows my skill set to be an asset to your firm. The M.Arch program at UBC has allowed for creative processes with a solid conceptual framework that can be actualized through collaborative thinking. My interests lie in design that is dynamic and allows for synergistic interaction between the object/form and user. Architecture has the ability to reconcile abstract theory and functional practice through innovative responses to contemporary societal demands. I feel my interests match the philosophy of your firm because I believe architecture should respond to current technological advances, ecological issues and geopolitical demands of our society. And most importantly improve the quality of life for the users/inhabitants by considering the affects of nature and culture at play where the architectural intervention exists.

I am proficient in technical programs such as AutoCAD, Sketchup, Illustrator and Photoshop which I feel can contribute to the ongoing success of your firm.

I look forward to the opportunity of discussing my application with you further

    Sincerely,Jan Louis Rodriguez

RECONCEPTUALIZING THE VANCOUVER ART GALLERY comprehensive design studio | year 2 | m.arch | art gallery

The culture of the contemporary art gallery is one that is interactive, participatory and aims to create a memorable experience for the user. Our design organizes its programmatic elements in a solid void relationship. We conceptualize the black box as solid volumes that spiral around a main core creating the white spaces which are the voids in between the spiralling black boxes. The black box is controlled to the AA standard for museum both thermally and in luminance; the white boxes are the A standard galleries (or spaces) that utilize natural daylight via a curtain that uses electrochromic panes of glass to control the sunlight. An existing graffiti wall along Beatty Street is integrated into the form and program of the VAG as it wraps around the building using a shotcrete wall to create a smooth continuous surface for graffiti. The wall speaks to the informal / formal relationship between the public and art and also the participatory nature of the contemporary gallery.
