Preparing for the Summer Sun & Heat Excessive exposure to the sun can lead to health concerns such as sunburn and skin cancer. As summer approaches and the weather gets warmer, it is necessary to apply sunscreen to protect ourselves from too much sun damage and burns.

In summer, we are exposed to higher levels of ultraviolet (UV) rays. This exposure is a risk factor for developing skin cancer and cataracts later in life. The UV index is the measure commonly used in Canada to assess the strength of the sun’s UV rays risk on a given day.

What is the UV Index? The index scale ranges from 0 to 10. The higher the value, the more intense ultraviolet rays. The UV index is calculated daily by Environment Canada using ozone and weather information. It can vary from day to day with changes in the ozone layer – the thinner the ozone layer, the higher the index reading.

How to protect your family from the sun at home and at school?

Wear a hat (preferably with a broad brim), sunglasses and protective clothing on sunny days.

Use sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or greater whenever you're outdoors.

Encourage your children to play in shady areas if they are outside for a long period of time.

Remember that sunburn can occur even on a cloudy day, as up to 80 per cent of UV rays can penetrate light clouds, and 40 per cent of UV rays can bounce back from sand, water or concrete.

As the weather warms up, please send your child to school with a hat, sunglasses and light, cool clothing. Please ensure that clothing is appropriate for school. Flip flops and sandals are not safe footwear for running recess activities.

Getting Ready for September! Planning to Move

Parents if you are planning to move before September, please let us know. You will need to pick up a transfer form from the office in order to register at your new school. Keeping us informed helps us to create balanced classes for the 2017-2018 school year.

Also, if you are planning an extended vacation that goes beyond the first day of school, please make every effort to have your child back in school by Friday, September 8, 2016. We want to ensure that we have the optimum number of teachers for our students. If your return date is later then please ensure you fill out a vacation letter in the office informing us of your return date.

Bussing Information

This year bussing information and eligibility for transportation will be posted at www.stopr.ca. You will need your child’s OEN number which can be found in the top left hand corner of the Report Card. Please check your child's bus information as there are changes from this year.

Also please be aware that Courtesy Bussing information will not be available until mid-October and accessing this privilege will depend on seat availability at that time.

Class Lists

Class lists will be posted on Thursday, August 31st after 11:00 a.m. Waiting until early September to post class lists will allow us to make changes to classes where necessary to ensure as little disruption as possible for your child once the academic year begins. Of course, changes due to reorganization to meet Ministry requirements may be inevitable—we thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we make every effort to ensure the best possible learning environment for your child.

Keep track of your child's vaccinations

To attend school in Ontario, children require an up-to-date immunization record, unless you have a valid exemption. When your child receives a new vaccination, remember to contact Peel Health and provide the information. Peel Health monitors immunizations on a regular basis to ensure all children attending school have been immunized. Please make sure Peel Health has an up-to-date record of your child's immunizations by calling Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700. Translation services are available.

Janet I. McDougald Public School Open House

Mark you calendars for September 28th 2016 for our first Open House where you will have an opportunity to meet you child’s teacher.

See you on September 5th for the First Day of School!

More information will be distributed in the end of the year flyer.

SCHOOL COUNCIL JUNE NEWS

It’s hard to believe that the 2016 – 2017 school year is winding down! What a wonderful year school council had! This year we’ve introduced regular hot dog days and milk & cookie days to go along with the popcorn day fundraisers. This year we were successful with our first ever poinsettia sales. We also had some amazing community event experiences with the Toronto Blue Jays, the 905 Raptors, Mississauga Steelheads in addition to our family movie night in February and our Aussie X night in May! Our glow-in-the dark move-a-thon was an exciting day for the students! This is the time of the year to say goodbye and thank you to our numerous parent and student volunteers who have helped make all of these events tremendously successful! We appreciate all the time you have given to participate in these events and come out to school council meetings! We have been extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated group of people supporting our school’s efforts and working so hard on behalf of our students! Another BIG thank you goes out to the parent community who has supported all of our fundraising efforts this year!

In the month of May we had our biggest Popcorn Day of the year! We sold over 560 bags of popcorn! The whole school smelled like a movie theatre that day! Thank you to the volunteers who popped and delivered all those bags to the students! What a great way to end Education Week!

During Education Week, we held our Parent Engagement Event with Aussie X! The crew from the X-Movement came out to the school on Tuesday, May 9 to teach our families about Movement, Mindfulness and Mateship. We learned how to play cricket and Aussie footy. It was great to see all the moms, dads and children running around playing these games! There was fresh fruit, water and juice boxes to replenish those active bodies and a cool take away bag filled with goodies at the end of the event! Many thanks go out to the volunteers who made this event great!

We held a hot dog day just before the long weekend! The students and parents really enjoy having a hot dog day the day after pizza day! It’s a treat for the parents not having to make lunches two days in a row! There will be our very last hot dog day of the school year on Friday, June 16. Keep an eye out for the order form in June!

Our very last fundraiser of the school year will be a Canada Day themed Milk and Cookie Day on Tuesday, June 27! The order forms will be going out in mid June. Don’t hesitate to order enough cookies to celebrate Canada Day with your family and friends!

Get your summer reading materials with QSP! Did you know that you can order magazines online and a portion of the cost gets returned to our school? The QSP Magazine program promotes reading and literacy, plus our school earns money. Visit www.QSP.ca our account ID is 3719010

Get ready for Camp with Mabel’s Labels! Don't forget to order Mabel's Label's "labels for stuff kids lose!" Just go to mabelslabels.com and select the "support a fundraiser" button and find our school. The school will then receive a portion back towards our fundraising goals.

Mark your calendars! The first council meeting of the 2017/2018 school years will be held on Wednesday, September 20, 6:30pm. Come out to hear all about school council, meet school community members and see how you can make a difference in your child’s education!

There will be refreshments and free babysitting for children 3 and older! We look forward to sseeing you there!

Note from the School:

We would like to thank Cherie Vosper and Shelley Graham for their hard work as co-chairs of

our School Council this year. They have done a great job organizing our council meetings and

working collaboratively with a fabulous team of council members and volunteers to plan

and run school events. Thank you very much.

LIBRARY NEWS The Library was a very busy place in May! The Silver Birch and Blue Spruce Reading Programs wrapped up, we had a very successful book fair, and classes continued to visit to explore environmental issues, code with Dash and Scratch Jr., and explore natural forces that impact our world.

The week of May 17, the winners of the Silver Birch and Blue Spruce Awards were announced.

"The Night Gardener" by the Fan Brothers was the favorite Canadian Picture book for the kindergarten to Grade 2 readers. Followed closely by "Stanley at School" by Linda Baily and "The Good Little Book" by Kyo Maclear.

The winner of the Silver Birch Express Award (Grades 3-5) was "The Biggest Poutine in the World" by Andree Poulin and Brigitte Waisberg. Runners up were "Miles and the Monster Outside" by Phillipa Dowding and "Pink is for Blobfish" by Jess Keating. All students who voted for the Silver Birch Express Award will be invited to attend a celebration in the Library in Early June. Stay tuned for more details!

It's hard to believe, but the year end is rapidly approaching. The final day for students to borrow Library books is June 9, and all books are due back to the Library by June 16! Now's a great time to check around the house for any school books, from the library, the classroom, or even from other schools you have attended. Return them to the Library and we'll make sure they get back to where they came from!

The public library is a great place to visit through the summer! All Mississauga Libraries run Free Summer Reading Clubs throughout July and August. This year's theme is "Celebrating Canada 150!" for more information, you can contact the Lakeview Library at 905-615-4805, or online at tdsummerreadingclub.ca .

Keep on reading Huskies!!!

IDLE-FREE Zone

Our school is working to protect the health of our students and the health of our environ-

ment. We ask you to show your support by turning off your engine while waiting to pick up

your child at school at the end of the day.

The emissions that come from our tailpipes harm all of us, especially children who breathe

more and at a faster rate than adults. By turning off your car our students, teachers and

parents won't breathe in unhealthy fumes as they enter school.

Air pollution also poses particular risks for our children with asthma. So, if you're going to be sitting

still for more than 60 seconds, remember to turn your car's engine off. You'll not only improve our air,

you'll also save money in fuel and vehicle wear and tear costs—then we can all breathe easier.

Peel board recognizes Crossing Guard Appreciation Day on June 14

The Peel board will recognize the contribution of school crossing guards on Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, June 13. The board encourages students, parents and staff to take a moment to thank the neighbourhood crossing guards who help to ensure a safe journey to and from school for thousands of students every day.

LOST & FOUND

Students and parents are reminded to check the lost and found on a continuous basis for any cloth-

ing that may have gone missing. The box is located in the front hallway of the school. Lost cloth-

ing will be displayed during the week of June 13-16th. Any leftover items will be donated to a local

charity on June 30th.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION UPDATE

We are excited to announce that our

outdoor learning space is beginning to

take shape.

Our rocks and mulch have arrived and

we have also had three trees planted

so that they can begin to grow to

provide some shade for learning.

Phase two will begin in the fall as we add bushes and flowers!

We hope all our JIMPS neighbours keep an eye out for our

learning area to keep it clean and safe for us all to enjoy. Special

thanks to the School Council and all our families for supporting

the fundraising initiatives that made this possible.

Our Kindergarten area is next. We hope to finalize the plans for

installation in the fall of 2017.

Religious accommodation available to all faiths, reflects board commitment

to inclusion

All Ontario school boards are legally required to offer religious accommodation (as per the

Ontario Human Rights Code) and have a religious accommodation procedure in place (as per the Ministry of

Education’s 2009 Provincial Equity and Inclusive Education strategy). While the Peel District School Board has

been providing religious accommodation to its students and staff for over 15 years, the board has revised its

formal Religious Accommodation Operating Procedure, which has been in place since 2012.

The Peel board recognizes and values the religious diversity within its community and is committed to provid-

ing a safe, respectful and equitable environment for all, free from all forms of discriminatory or harassing be-

haviour, including those based on religion.

Who can make a religious accommodation request?

Parents of Peel students or staff of any faith background can make a religious accommodation request.

How can a student or staff member make a religious accommodation request?

Parents of Peel students or staff should contact their school principal or site supervisor in early September (or

as early in the school year as possible) to submit a religious accommodation request.

What religious accommodation can be requested?

For many students and staff in Peel schools, there are a number of areas where the practice of their religion

that may result in a request for accommodation:

observation of major holy days, ceremonies, commemorations, and celebrations

school opening and closing exercises prayer and rituals

dietary requirements fasting

religious attire modesty requirements

religious leave participation in daily activities and curriculum

For more information on religious accommodation, visit our website at

www.peelschools.org/aboutus/equity.

making our Education Week possible. We hope you were able to
