From the President

How`s everyone doing?

Well Christmas has come and gone in the blink of an eye, and I don`t know what

happened to summer. To me it seemed to be wetter and colder than normal.

We recently had our first club meeting for the year with a large turn out of mem-bers, all were able to catch up after the holidays.

This new venue ‘The Top Pub’ is proving very popular for members to come and have a drink or meal which makes for an enjoyable evening. We even have some members take advantage of daylight saving and bring their Mustangs along.

There is a lot going on at this time of year and no doubt some events will clash, so keep an eye on your calendars. The club will continue to have at least one or-ganised run once a month with the odd spontaneous run thrown in occasionally.

So if anyone has any interesting ideas and/or places to visit, please let us know.

Organisation of our Waikato Convention in 2013 is well on the way, with plenty of ideas coming forward. The convention committee will be having separate monthly meetings and I will keep you informed. The next big task for all of you, will be to source the necessary sponsors.

Jo O`Reilly is still looking for more people to list their car on our club page of the NZ Mustang Website. If you are unsure, have a look at the web site to see what other people have listed.

I look forward to your continued support and contribution to create another suc-

cessful year for our club.

Hello everyone,

Hope you all had a nice time with your families over the festive season and you

managed to unwind a little from the chaos that was 2011.

The club has plenty of activities lined up for you this year, so I urge you all to

get actively involved in your club and have some fun.

I would like more articles for this magazine from you and will be tapping lots of

you on the shoulder for your stories about your car.

We now have 91 cars in our club and I’m sure there are some great stories

about how you came to purchase your Mustang. Believe it or not, other people

actually like reading stories about ‘how your dream was realised’.

My camera’s been busy over the last 2 months, so there’s a fair bit of photo-

graphic content in this issue. If anyone wants any of the pictures I take, just

see me at the club meetings or drop me an email and I’ll get them to you.

Club Xmas BBQ—2011

A large group of members cruised out to Bob and Deidre Hastie’s ranch for our

club Xmas BBQ on Dec 11th. The weather gods were kind to us and everyone

had a great time. It was a nice way to end the year, watch Katherine Edwards dis-

play her awesome tractor driving skills., help Deidre celebrate her 21st birthday

(again) and for Colin Johnstone to show off his awesome 2011 Mach 1 Mustang.

What a machine! He’s a very happy man is our Colin.

Big thanks must go to Bob and Deidre for hosting us again and to everyone who

helped on the day, especially the ladies in the kitchen!

Club member Colin Johnstone’s addition to the club is a 2011 Mach 1 GT 5.0

Manufactured at the Auto Alliance International Plant, Flat Rock, Michigan.

Brought in from Litho, Texas and purchased locally at 4 Guys Autobarn, Hamilton.

The car is powered by a 32 valve 5.0 L 305 cu.in “Coyote” engine ( producing

307kW. 435hp).

Coupled to a Getrag-Ford MT82 6-speed auto box.

Sitting on the black stuff are 20 inch American racing alloys putting power down through Toyo 255/40R20 front and 275/40R20 rear tyres.

A few club members recently attended the 2012 New Zealand Festival of Motor

Racing Celebrating BMW at Hampton Downs. It was a superb day, fine and sunny

and lots of horsepower on display. The amount of ‘old’ NZ racing cars on display

took us back to our teenage years. It was great to see Jim Richards, Paul Radisich,

Paul Fahey, Dennis Marwood to name a few, and to see their old racing cars look-

ing as good as they did years ago was a real highlight.

There was a big contingent of ‘historic muscle cars’ on display from NZ and Aussie

and some amazing BMW’s including the works 3.0 litre CSL 'Batmobile' that was

driven by Chris Amon.

A feature class was the ‘Group A and Invited Touring Car Challenge’ where classic

BMW 635CSi and BMW M3s of the 1980s battled other Touring cars including Ford

Sierra Cosworth, Jaguar XJS, Holden Commodore, Rover SD1, Toyota Corolla and

Toyota Corona cars. Many of these cars raced in the Nissan-Mobil 500 series at

Wellington and Pukekohe in the 1980s and 1990s and it was great to see them all

again.

The Ferrari 250 GTO is a GT car which was produced by Ferrari from 1962 to

1964 for homologation into the FIA's Group 3 Grand Touring Car category.

The numerical part of its name denotes the displacement in cubic centimeters of each cylinder of the engine, whilst GTO stands for "Gran Turismo Omologata", Ital-ian for "Grand Touring Homologated." When new, the GTO commanded an $18,000 purchase price in the United States, and buyers had to be personally ap-proved by Enzo Ferrari and his dealer for North America, Luigi Chinetti.

36 cars were made in the years '62/'63. In 1964 'Series II' was introduced, which had a slightly different look. Three such cars were made, and four older 'Series I'

were given a 'Series II' body. It brought the total of GTOs produced to 39.

In 2004, Sports Car International placed the 250 GTO eighth on a list of Top Sports

Cars of the 1960s, and nominated it the top sports car of all time. Similarly, Motor

Trend Classic placed the 250 GTO first on a list of the "Greatest Ferraris of all

time".

From the late 1970s to the late 1980s, classic car values rose rapidly and the 250 GTO, touted as the Ferrari that most successfully embodies the salient traits of the marque, became the most valuable of all Ferraris.

A 250 GTO (4757GT) seized by the FBI belonging to the deceased Robert C. "Chris" Murray, a drug dealer who fled the United States in 1984, was sold in a sealed auction in 1987 for approximately $1.6 million. Murray bought the car in 1982 from a Beverly Hills dealer with $250,000 in cash from a backpack full of $20 and $50 notes. In 1989, at the peak of the boom, a 250 GTO was sold to a Japa-nese buyer for $14.6 million plus commission. By 1994 that example changed hands for about $3.5 million. In 2008, a British buyer bought a 250 GTO that for-merly belonged to Lee Kun-hee of Samsung Electronics at an auction for a record £15.7 million. In May 2010, BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans bought chassis number

4675 GT for £12 million.

Scarcity and high monetary values led to the creation of several replica 250 GTOs

on more common Ferrari chassis. Misrepresentations of the original cars, offered

for sale at full market value, have been reported.

Peyton Cramer couldn’t have picked a better time to pitch a Shelby Mustang pro-

gram to senior management at Hertz Car Rental Company. Hertz had switched to

Ford from Chevrolet in 1965 and had already established its Hertz Sports Car

Club. Selected rental car outlets throughout the country stocked Corvette Sting

Rays that members could rent. To become a member all you had to do was be 25

or over and have a valid driver’s license! The switch from Corvette to Mustang was

a simple matter for Hertz.

The original Shelby-American pitch was for 25 or 50 305-horsepower GT-350H

Mustangs in limited edition livery (originally Raven Black with Bronze Power Gold

LeMans stripes; other colors came later), four-speed (later cars had modified C-4

automatics) and popular Shelby GT features. Cramer flipped out when Hertz

bumped the order to 1,000 GT-350Hs. Carroll Shelby was a very happy man!

Shelby to unveil 800 horsepower 2012 GT500

Super Snake at New York Auto Show

Shelby will unveil its new Super Snake post title package for the 2012 Ford Shelby GT500 at the New York International Auto Show. With 800 horsepower, the Shelby GT500 Super Snake will be the most powerful American muscle car introduced at the show. In addition to the Super Snake, Shelby American will also display the limited edition 2012 Shelby GT350 coupe and convertible.

“Shelby American has a rich history at the New York International Auto Show,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American Inc. “The very first Shelby car was intro-duced there in 1962, as well as the 1968 and 2008 Shelby GT500KR and the 2006 Shelby Hertz GT-H. This year, we’re returning with one of the most powerful and

important Shelby’s ever built.”

Born on the drag strip and road course of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Shelby

American and its partner Ford Racing, created an aggressive suspension and en-

gine package that turns the Ford Shelby GT500 into a world class supercar. Even

more power is available for the 2012 model year. There will be a limited produc-

tion of Super Snakes available to customers starting May 1, 2011.

Cambridge Cruise Nights:

Presented by Stragglers Rod & Custom Club on the first Wednesday of each month, from

6.00pm onwards. These events begin in Oct and continue through until April. The Cambridge

Lions Club will have it’s burger van on site, there will also be a coffee van, music and other en-

tertainment. Please note that this event is being held in a liquor ban area.

Waikato Classic Car & Hot Rod Breakfast Cruises:

Being held at Te Awamutu Racecourse, Racecourse Road, Te Awamutu. Over 70 car clubs

have been invited and all classic car owners are welcome to display their vehicles. Gates are

open at 7.30am, admission: gold coin donation for show cars and driver; $5 each for passen-

gers; swap meet sellers $10 per site. Public admission is $5, children under 12 free.

The 2012 NZHRA national hot rod show is set to be part of the 2012 CRC Speedshow at the

ASB Showground. Sixty of this country’s top hot rods and street machines will be on display in

a designated stadium and will include iconic hot rods that reflect the NZ Hot Rod Associations

fifty year history.
