Dear Janssen School Community,
As our Winter Break approaches with such anticipation, I realize that
this time of year is about family and being grateful. For our students,
learning is still taking place, just under a different setting and with dif-
ferent teachers. The home is the safe and nurturing classroom and fami-
ly members, young and old, deliver the lessons for our students to under-
stand the meaning of family and being grateful. Winter Break is an op-
portunity to build on family relationships and create memories that our
students will remember and share.
As Winter Break approaches with such anticipation, our teachers realize
that our students may be a little more anxious as they await for some-
thing special. Keeping this in mind, our teachers have engaged our stu-
dents in learning experiences where our students continue to feel a sense
of belonging, competence, meaningfulness, and autonomy. Through
their planning and adjusting, our teachers have created the conditions
where our students grow as problem solvers. As the principal, it is so
rewarding to visit any classroom and see the positive relationships that
exist between our teachers and our students. Once in the classrooms, it
takes twenty seconds to notice these relationships.
As we approach Winter Break, I want to thank our PTO for organizing
such a great family event this month with the Holiday Lights Tour, din-
ner, and dance. The joy that our families experienced and the memories
they made that night are to be celebrated. I also want to thank our staff
for the great work they have done up to this point. I know they are
proud of what our students have accomplished and look forward in con-
tinuing to serve students in 2020.
This has been a fulfilling year. I wish each of our families a fun and safe
Winter Break and for you to look forward to an exciting 2020. I so look
forward to 2020 and the remainder of the school year with great antici-
pation because I will be seeing our students continue to grow and our
staff working together to adjust our behaviors to best support our stu-
dents and each other.
Sincerely,
Hercules Nikolaou, Ph.D.

THANK YOU FROM THE LMC
What a fantastic Follett Book Fair we just com-
pleted! Thank you for being so supportive of
Janssen Elementary School. With your purchas-
es, the library received books to add to our collec-
tion, which in turn benefits the children of
Janssen.
Congratulations to our many book raffle winners!
Also, a big THANK YOU to Miss St. Arnold. You
were a huge help and are very much appreciated.
Thank you,
Mrs. Wedemeier, Mrs. Bohne, and
Mrs. Romenesko

(8:35). The office will start making phone calls
after 9:00 if they were not notified by a parent or
guardian of an absence.
JANSSEN COUNSELOR CORNER
Happy December!
Life Skills Class Updates
All grade levels have been receiving lessons on
protective behaviors as part of our personal safe-
ty unit. I am hoping that after these lessons, stu-
dents are more aware of ways to keep themselves
safe and the steps to take if they ever encounter
a situation where they are subject to unsafe or
unwanted touches, or touches that break the
touching rule. The touching rule is that no one
should ever touch or ask to see your private body
parts, except to keep you healthy. The students
have been doing a great job with these some-
times uncomfortable topics. All students have
also been able to name at least five trusted
grown-ups who they could go to for help if they
had a big problem or were in an unsafe situa-
tion.
After break, all grades will be transitioning into
lessons on understanding emotions and ways to
handle strong emotions.
Happy Holidays!!
It is hard to believe that we have already
reached the holidays and our winter break!
Time flies when you are having fun. This can be
a joyous time of year, but it is not without its
stresses. These stresses also impact children. I
have attached an article from Harvard Medical
School that has some excellent tips on how to
make the holidays as low stress as possible for
our kids: https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/7-
ways-prevent-holiday-stress-children-

I hope everyone has safe and happy holidays. I
will see you in 2020!

JANSSEN PBIS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
Here is what is happening at Janssen this month!
Monthly Character Trait
Our character trait for the month of December is gratitude. During morning Paws and community cir-
cles in the classrooms, we are focusing on what it means to be grateful and on some things that we are
grateful for both at school and at home. We are also discussing how we can show others gratitude, espe-
cially during the holiday season.
January Behavior Focus
Part of our job as the PBIS committee is to monitor and evaluate our office referral data to look for
trends. When we see a trend in behavior, we might create lessons or teach “boosters” to students on how
to change that behavior. We have noticed that we are seeing students attempting to solve their problems
with their hands and feet instead of using problem solving skills. This is because students either lack
self-control in the moment, or problem solving skills. Therefore, in January, classrooms will be focusing
on teaching the students about self-control and problem solving. We are hoping this extra focus will help
to reduce the number of office referrals we are seeing for this behavior and will also give students some
good strategies that they can use at school, home, and in the community.
