FATHER JARETT’S CATHOLIC Q & A

This is the second of a 10-part series “Faith and Reasons Behind the Mass.” Why is it that almost every Catholic Church has steps in front? It almost seems anti-elderly and/or anti-handicap accessible. Naturally, as with all things Catholic there is rich symbolism in the design of the traditional church structure being built “up.” The reason we climb upward to enter into most Catholic churches is that the church is to physically and spiritually draw our souls out of our everyday lives and lift our eyes and spirits upward. Medieval churches were even built with gargoyles and beasts on the outside holding the symbolism of the conflict and turmoil of the world outside, while the interior is to draw our spirits to the peace of our final end. Most importantly we physically climb out of this world to celebrate Mass, the liturgy where heaven meets earth. Once within the church structure we enter the narthex. In the early centuries of Catholic churches this is the space where the non-baptized would gather to listen to the words of the liturgy and is also a reason why the narthex is the most appropriate place for the baptismal font. Baptism is the sacrament that initiates us into the family of God and therefore it is fitting that we pass through the site of baptism on our way into the House of God. In Churches without a baptismal font in the narthex the symbolism of passing through baptism is communicated with the holy water font. When we enter the sanctuary or naive of the church we dip our hands in the waters of salvation as we sign ourselves, as was done at our baptism, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. What a wonderful gift for which to thank God the next time we enter our church. On our way to the pew we bend a knee to the ground (genuflect) as a sign of reverence for the real presence of Jesus in the Tabernacle. In medieval times, a genuflection was used upon entering the throne room of the king, and so we fall to our knees in the presence of the Eternal King. In a sense, we take St. Paul’s words very seriously, “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” (Phi. 2:10) If we should genuflect at His name, then it is most certainly appropriate to genuflect in His presence. What should we do in the pew? I heard it best described that as the candles of the sanctuary are lit for the celebration of the Eucharist, so too we gather before mass in silent prayer to “light the candle of our hearts,” in preparation for what is about to take place. What exactly is about to take place? The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy from Vatican II states that “the liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the fountain from which all her power flows.” Without the Mass, we as Catholic Christians would be cut off from
