The Baptism of the Lord is the end event of the Christmas Season because it is the occasion of the first public revelation of the Holy Trinity; the official revelation of Jesus as the Son of God. It is described by all four Gospels and marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry.
The Baptism of the Lord identifies Jesus with us. Sinless, Jesus received the baptism of repentance to be one with us sinners. Lastly, at His baptism the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus, giving Him the power of preaching and healing.
This feast reminds us of who we are and Whose we are. By Baptism, we become sons and daughters of God, brothers and sisters in Christ, members of His Church, heirs of Heaven and temples of the Holy Spirit.
The sadness of finishing the festive days of Christmas leaves us with a positive mission: to experience the presence of God within us, to acknowledge and appreciate the dignity we share as God’s family, and to live accordingly with holy lives that do not desecrate who we are.
Please know that the Christmas decorations and manger come down this week. Visit the manger one final time and be fortified for our Christian mission in the days ahead. -Fr. Joe

LITURGICAL INSIGHTS
Resolution and Prayer
In photography, resolution refers to the amount of detail an image can hold. A picture of higher resolution translates to one of greater detail, clarity and appeal. One with lower resolution might appear blurry, with the details faded and indiscernible.
What resolution is to a photograph, prayer is to the spiritual life. A consistent, daily and regular routine of prayer gives one’s spiritual life greater detail and clarity, and there is no better time than today to strengthen one’s spiritual relationship with God.
Whether we are priests, religious, married women and men, single women and men, children, divorced, widowed, convert or cradle Catholic, we are all called to a life of holiness appropriate to our station in life, as St. Francis de Sales, patron of our diocese, teaches. That means, no matter where we are in life, we can become as holy as God wants us to be. Prayer gives us higher resolution with this aspiration.
Prayer is requires an open heart and a willingness to reserve some time in the day for God to hear Him speak and to follow His guidance. Therefore, find a place in your home that is free of distractions: no cell phone, no computer, no TV, etc, and find a time when you can consistently pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to be made aware of His Presence and, in the company of your guardian angel and patron saints, ask that your heart might be open to hearing God’s word and following it.
Spend a couple of minutes in silence letting God’s peace and His love come into your heart. You may or may not “hear” anything; what matters more is your willingness to be present to God and to open your heart to Him. In the words of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, prayer is “heart speaking to heart.”
Later, once your prayer routine is established, increase the amount of time you pray daily: from two minutes to five minutes, from once a day to twice a day, from preparing the Sunday readings once a week to twice a week.
Treat it like having a conversation with a friend or someone you love, where you enjoy the person’s company and conversation so much, you don’t want it to end. Have that resolve in your relationship with God and watch your prayer life and your spiritual life have a higher resolution.

We are back in session this week for both the Sunday morning and the Tuesday evening programs. We are also looking forward to the beautiful celebration for the Sacrament of Reconciliation for our students who have been preparing with their parents and their catechists. You will see a banner at the back of the Church with the names of all the students who will be receiving the sacrament. Please pray for these young people as they celebrate God’s mercy dawning in their lives through this wonderful healing sacrament.
May 2016 dawn brightly with mercy and grace. Many wonderful events will be happening over the next several months. Let us continue our journey with grateful and happy hearts for all that God gives us.

Meet the RCIA Candidate Susan Stewart
I'm a single mom to a nearly 20 year old son! (hard to believe!) We are from New Orleans originally. I lived most of my life there growing up and went to Louisiana State University. My degree is in Communications and I work in TV news, which keeps me on my toes!
The biggest influence for RCIA was my son. I grew up in the Church, and was not happy that I was unable to bring him to CCD classes when he was younger due to my irregular hours. When I talked with him about it, I told him I'd do it with him.
RCIA is a reminder that you are never too young to learn, and you can never truly know everything about the Bible or Christ. I have certainly seen the Lord working his magic in my life, particularly in my stress, of which there is plenty!!
I have always been comfortable at Mass, having grown up attending both the Methodist and the Catholic church as a child. What I especially like about the Church is the feeling of tradition and continuity with the past. It is has been exceptional to be in RCIA gaining new insights with my son.
