and all who are sick and in need of our prayers.

“Today let us do honor to Christ’s baptism and celebrate this feast in holiness. Be cleansed entirely and continue to be cleansed. Nothing gives such pleasure to God as the conversion and salvation of men, for whom his every word and every revelation exist. He wants you to become a living force for all mankind, lights shining in the world. You are to be radiant lights as you stand beside Christ, the great light, bathed in the glory of him who is the light of heaven.” —St. Gregory Nazianzus

The feast of the “Baptism of the Lord” which completes the Church’s Christmas celebration this weekend, gives us pause to consider our incorporation into the Body of Christ when the sacred waters were poured over us. How has your baptismal commitment to Christ been exercised? If you are a parent, have you been faithful to the spiritual care of your children…a care you committed to on the day you carried your infant to the baptismal font? I am grateful for the recently received generous estate remembrance of the parish in the will of J. Vincent Bavol. Thank you to all who have been praying and asking after the health of my father, Carl. It was not widely known that he had contracted the COVID-19 virus. He is doing very well and appreciates all of the prayerful support he has received. Special thanks to Fr. Alek and Mary Kay Smith for the composition and presentation of the “Novena to St. Raphael” that we prayed in advance of the parish foundation on January 4. The Hymn to St. Raphael the Archangel, that we sing at the conclusion of the Masses this weekend, was specially commissioned by the Director of Music, Béla Pater, to commemorate the establishment of our new parish. We hope to make regular use of the hymn so that we learn it well.

ABOUT OUR PARISH COAT OF ARMS Our parish coat of arms is full of symbolism. The design is simple and meant to be easily recognizable, both at a distance and in small resolution. In formal heraldic language, it would be described as Vert, above two fish hauriant respectant and a fish contourné in base Argent, a Greek cross enclosed within an annulet Or. In plain English, it is a green shield with three upwards-facing silver fish beneath a golden ringed cross. The fish is a common symbol of Saint Raphael. This connection comes from the Book of Tobit, where the angel, in the guise of a human being, guides the pious young Tobiah on a journey. While bathing in a river, Tobiah is attacked by a large fish. Raphael orders him to catch the fish, and Tobiah works many wonders with it — using its gall to drive out demons and to heal the blindness of his father, Tobit. Generally speaking, fish have a long and rich history in Christian art and symbolism. Early Christians used to identify each other in the days of persecution by drawing a primitive fish — for ΙΧΘΥΣ (ichthys), “fish” in Greek, is an anagram for Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter: “Jesus Christ, the Son of God, Savior.” Fish are also a natural symbol of baptism, as the Church Father Tertullian writes: “we, little fishes, after the example of our ΙΧΘΥΣ, Jesus Christ, are born in water” (On Baptism, 1). On the shield there are three fish — three, for the Holy Trinity, into whose life we are incorporated by baptism, and three for our three parent parishes of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Margaret of Scotland, and Ss. Simon and Jude. The second symbol of the coat of arms is the ringed cross. This cross resembles a Eucharistic Host, pared crosswise and ready to be broken and shared (see Acts 2:42). Taken together with the three fish, this becomes a symbol of the Eucharist, as prefigured in the miracle of the multiplication of loaves and fishes. As a parish community, we find the “source and summit” of our Christian lives in the celebration of the Eucharist (Lumen Gentium, 11). Finally, the green color of the shield is a symbol for life, growth, and hope. It is the liturgical color of Ordinary Time, during which we reflect on the day-to-day call of discipleship. As we find strength and healing in the sacraments, we rely on God’s providence and the intercession of our heavenly patron, Saint Raphael, as together we journey to the ultimate goal of our earthly pilgrimage: eternal happiness and resurrection in the life of the world to come.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION | MATTHEW 2:2

FIRST READING | ISAIAH 42:1-4, 6-7

SECOND READING | ACTS 10:34-38

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM 29:1-2, 3-4, 9-10

Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. a bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching.

I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

1. Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly powers, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; bow down before the Lord, majestic in holiness.

2. The voice of the Lord upon the waters, the Lord on the immensity of waters; the voice of the Lord full of power; the voice of the Lord full of splendor.

3. The God of glory thunders; in his temple they all cry, “Glory!” The Lord sat enthroned above the flood, the Lord sits as King forever.

Text: Psalm 29: The Revised Grail Psalms © 2010 GIA Publications, Inc Tune: Michel Guimont © 1994, GIA Publications, Inc.

Peter proceeded to speak to those gathered in the house of Cornelius, saying: “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. You know the word that he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all over Judea,

beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”

John saw Jesus approaching him, and said: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the World.”

PROFESSION OF FAITH I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow at the following bolder words) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

GOSPEL | MARK 1:7-11 This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

ARING IVING ERVING

The Creed A new year, a new parish, and a new

opportunity to renew our faith. St. Raphael the Archangel Parish is pleased to announce a monthly Livestreamed and Zoom event hosted by Fr. Alek Schrenk. Join us on the First Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. for “Wine, Cheese, and The Creed.” Fr. Alek will be our guide on a year long journey through the

prayer by which we profess twelve basic tenets of our Catholic faith, the Apostles’ Creed. We began on Thursday, January 7, but feel free to join us any month. Stay safe and cozy in your home, have a snack and beverage of your choice, and join in

Fr. Alek’s interactive presentation. All are welcome! If you wish to participate by Livestream only, simply tune into the parish stream on our website on February 4. To receive a link to

the interactive Zoom portion of the course, send an email to [email protected].

At that very time, the prayer of these two suppliants was heard in the glorious presence of Almighty God. So Raphael was sent to heal them both. –Tobit 3: 16-17

It is such a blessing that St. Raphael, our Parish Patron, is known in scripture as a healer sent by God. In addition to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the winter season brings with it the likelihood that people will experience colds, flu, and falls. It is difficult and potentially dangerous for people who are elderly and/or have pre-existing conditions to go out during any winter. The coronavirus adds a new level of caution. As we lift our prayers for health and an end to the pandemic, we can pray in a special way now for St. Raphael’s healing intercession.

Ironically, at a time when more people than ever are homebound or feeling isolated in care facilities, we have more restrictions than ever on our ministries to reach out to them. It is a special priority of our parish to keep connected with those who are “shut in” now. This is an opportunity for all members of our new parish community to get involved.

Please be attentive to elderly relatives, friends, and neighbors. If we have snow and you are able to help shovel a walk or driveway, please consider doing so. If you are going to the grocery store, ask if your elderly neighbor needs you to pick something up for them. Consider calling or checking on people you have not seen in a while to be sure they are alright, and to provide some welcome company during this cold, often lonely time of year. If a homebound neighbor is a parishioner, take them a church bulletin to help them to feel connected to our community.

If someone is unable to attend mass for a prolonged period of time due to health or mobility issues, or is exhibiting caution due to the pandemic, please encourage them to call the church office, or to permit you to call on their behalf, to make us aware of their situation. Although we cannot by directive of the Bishop send Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to homes at this time, we can reach out to talk and pray with them and add their name to our prayer list if desired.

The Care Ministers and several dedicated volunteers reach out to our homebound parishioners by phone, email and sending cards. If you or someone you know would enjoy such outreach, please contact the parish office. If you would like to participate in outreach to our homebound parishioners and nursing facility residents, please contact Laura or Karen in Care Ministry to discuss ways you can help.

Due to the HIPAA law, we cannot obtain information about our members once they enter a hospital, skilled nursing facility, or assisted living facility. If a member of our parish anticipates admission or is admitted to a healthcare facility, someone needs to notify the parish on their behalf, if they are unable, so that we can keep them in our prayers and keep in touch.

ST. RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

We welcome Bryson Sebastian Russell into our family of faith! Bryson received the Sacrament of Baptism on December 26, 2020, at St. Margaret of Scotland Church. He was joined by his parents, Shane and Melissa Russell, his godparents, John and Christine Mormile, and his grandparents, William and Donna Pencosky and Kimberly Russell. Bryson was baptized by Deacon Kevin, surrounded by his immediate family. We pray Bryson will live his baptism by continuing to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ all the days of his life.

Congratulations and God’s blessings to the Russell family!

IN GRATITUDE Many thanks to all the parishioners who generously donated to the Golden Agers Food Drive in December. In addition to the many, many bags of groceries, the Golden Agers were able to present a check for $1,000 to the Food Pantry located at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Pictured left to right: Larry Gaburri, Janet Zychowski, and Al Bucholtz, with Don Cain from the Golden Agers. Missing in photo, Joann Cain.

ST. RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

Feast Day: September 29 In 1921 the Church began to celebrate the feast day of St. Raphael on October 24. Due to the revision of the General Roman Calendar in 1969, St. Raphael’s feast day was transferred to September 29 for celebration together with archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Meaning of Raphael: God heals, medicine of God

Attributes of St. Raphael: walking with Tobias; young man carrying a fish; young man carrying a staff; sounding a trumpet

Patron Saint of travelers, healing, the blind, nurses, physicians, medical workers, relationships, young people, matchmakers, shepherds, Christian marriage, and happy meetings.

Birth: beginning of creation Death: never

History: St. Raphael is one of the 3 archangels mentioned in sacred scripture. He is one of the 7 archangels that stand before the throne of God praising the Creator endlessly with hymns. His office is generally accepted by tradition to be that of healing and acts of mercy as God sent him to heal Tobit’s blindness in the Book of Tobit. Raphael confesses to Tobit and Tobiah after they give praise and gratitude for all “Azariah,” the archangel in human form, has done to help the family overcome poverty and illness. Azariah confesses that, "I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the Lord" (Tobit 12:15). The book of Tobit is the only book in sacred scripture where Raphael is mentioned by name. You can read the Book of Tobit at: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/tobit/0. As you read the biblical account of Tobit, Tobiah, and Sarah, you discover the above-mentioned attributes and therefore, find the reasons why St. Raphael the Archangel is the patron of travelers, healing, medical professions, marriage, and relationships. Raphael is also identified with the angel in the gospel of John 5:1-4 who would stir the waters of the pool at Bethesda with healing powers allowing the first person to enter the pool to be healed of infirmity; "An angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water was made whole of whatsoever infirmity he lay under." Prayer

St. Raphael is often invoked as a guide in daily life against evil and sin as he stands close to the throne of God to help.

Holy Archangel Raphael, standing so close to the throne of God and offering Him our prayers, I venerate you as God’s special Friend and Messenger. I choose you as my Patron and wish to love and obey you as young Tobias did. I consecrate to you my body and soul, all my work, and my whole life. I want you to be my Guide and Counsellor in all the dangerous and difficult problems and decisions of my life. Remember, dearest Saint Raphael, that the grace of God preserved you with the good angels in heaven when the proud ones were cast into hell.

I entreat you, therefore, to help me in my struggle against the world, the flesh, and the devil. Defend me from all dangers and every occasion of sin. Direct me always in the way of peace, safety, and salvation. Offer my prayers to God as you offered those of Tobias, so that through your intercession I may obtain the graces necessary for the salvation of my soul. Remember me and always entreat for me before the Face of the Son of God. Help me to love and serve my God faithfully, to die in His grace, and finally to merit to join you in seeing and praising God forever in heaven. Amen.
