Do you know Unaffiliated Jews in Chester County, Montgomery County

and Delaware County?

Celebrate with an Oneg

Do you have Jewish friends or acquaintances who live in Chester County, Montgomery County and Delaware County who are not already members of a synagogue? If you do, why not invite them to one of the upcoming events at Or Shalom. They may have a good time and decide to come back. They may have such a good time that they decide to become members themselves. According to a recent survey by the Jewish Federation, there are many, many unaffiliated Jews in Chester county. We’d love to contact them, but don’t know who they are. You can help. Todah rabah!

HORIZONS 3 JANUARY 2020 Tevet, 5780—Sh’vat, 5780

Rabbi’s Reflections

We made it to 2020 and our Gregorian year was full of ups and downs. Just last month we witnessed the targeting of and terror towards the Jewish community with the shootings in Jersey City and the violent vandalism in Beverly Hills. Both of these events we experienced deep loss of two things that we hold central in Judaism: life and Torah. In a recently published American Jewish Community survey, administered in the Fall of 2019, we learned the following:

88% of Jews think that antisemitism is a problem in the United States, with 38% believing it is a serious problem

Over the past five years, 84% of Jews think that antisemitism has increased in the United States And of those that were targets of antisemitic attacks or remarks 75% did not report the Incident

This is unsettling and concerning. Many among us, myself included, are asking the questions: what happens now, what do we do as Jews, how do we create safe spaces for ourselves and the members of our community? And of course, the meta question: why is this happening and why now? I wish I had the answers to these important questions. I, along with you, have ideas, but they are not answers. But what I do know is that the only way we can attempt to answer these important questions, let alone change the current state of things, is that we must come together in community even more so then before, so that we can address these questions together and more importantly find answers together. Holocaust survivor Elie Weisel so wisely said: “Just as despair can come to one only from other human beings, hope, too, can be given to one only by other human beings.” Some are probably asking, where is G-d among this pain and distress? G-d is here, G-d is with our community and wants to be even closer to us. Elie Weisel also wrote: “I have not lost faith in G-d. I have moments of anger and protest. Sometimes I’ve been closer to G-d for that reason.” This is one way to engage with G-d. Some may engage through belief in the many faces of G-d which we learn in the Torah, such as: protector, strength, and compassionate one. In either case, amidst this community we can be close to one another and also welcome G-d even closer within us, whether it be through anger or support. And we experience G-d the most when we are in relationship with one another, as the Jewish Philosopher Martin Buber argued “connection between two people is where G-d resides.” Because although there are those who try and divide us, we remain together. When they try and push us into a corner of fear, we grab hands and stand together in strength.

If you asked local endodontist Dr. Bruce Terry, “what could be more fun than a root canal?” he might surprise you with the answer. This full time dentist is

a part-time mountaineer having the rare distinction of climbing the highest mountains of the seven continents. Hear the lessons he learned making his way uphill on

January 10 at Congregation Or Shalom as part of its popular Friday Night Speakers Series.

The Friday Night Lecture Series on January 10, 2020 begins with 7:30 pm Shab-

bat services followed by an 8:15 pm presentation by Dr. Terry.

Mount Everest? Mount Kilimanjaro? Dr. Terry has checked off climbing the

Seven Summits on his bucket list with travels to Russia, Argentina, Indonesia and Alaska. He made “practice” climbs in exotic places like Cho Oyu, Tibet.

"As an endodontist, I spend my days looking in the tiniest of little spaces. I go and

mountain climb to try to get the big picture of life," Dr. Terry explained. "Mountaineering puts me in opportunities to see the bigger picture and have

challenges that are different. It does relate to dentistry because, at the end of the day, patients are challenges; teeth are challenges; insurance companies are challenges.

Mountaineering teaches me patience, how to look for opportunities and to always be my best."

He completed his Seven Summits goal in May 2019 when he reached the summit of

Mount Everest with his climbing group in Nepal. Congregation members will hear about his decades-long training routines and the thrill of reaching the top of the world’s

highest peaks.

Join us for Tot Shabbat!

We are starting a Tot Shabbat service once a month targeted towards kids, 0-6 (older siblings always welcome!). Bring your kids, your grandkids, tell other families

and friends!

Everyone welcome, one does not need to be a member to attend.

We will come together to prepare for Shabbat (kids will have the opportunity to set up for Shabbat every week using

their own playset), sing a few songs, and focus on a different theme every month. Grape juice and challah provided.

*The Tot Shabbat service is not a substitute for regular Friday night services, they are an addition.*

Mark your calendars for the following Fridays, 5:45 pm - 6:30 pm:

January 17th: Shema February 14th: Tu B'Shevat and Love

March- June dates to be determined.

On next page is the reservation form for the Sunday, April 26, 2020 Dorothy Freedman Memorial Conversation with Survivor program that will take place from 10:00am-12:30pm at Moore College of Art and Design (20th Street & the Ben Franklin Parkway.Philadelphia). Students in 7th-12th grades will have the opportunity to meet with a Holocaust Survivor in a smaller group setting and then all groups will come together to hear from an inspiring keynote speaker. The program, which includes transportation and a light breakfast, is provided free of charge by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia's Jewish Community Relations Council. Please see the attached the form to make your school's reservation for the program. The Conversation program takes place prior to the Philadelphia Community Memorial Ceremony for the Six Million Jewish Martyrs held at 1:00 p.m. that same afternoon at the Holocaust Memorial at 16th and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Each year hundreds of members of our community memorialize those who died in the Holocaust. As the years go by, the Survivor community is decreasing and so there is an increased responsibility on the rest of the Jewish community to honor and recall those who perished at the hands of the Nazis. We strongly encourage you to have your students stay for the beginning of the Ceremony to participate in the March of the Generations. It has great meaning to those Survivors present at the Ceremony. provide a tax letter receipt but if we just have no room for the items you

want to donate, please consider another worthy cause for your donation.
