Historical background of the Santo Niño devotion and the Sinulog
The story of Santo Niño dates back to the discovery of the Philippines by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, and the Christianization of the islands. The statue of the Holy Child Jesus, believed to have come from Belgium, was given to Humamay, later christened as Queen Juana, wife of the native leader, Rajah Humabon. There was natural resistance to the Spanish conquistadores by the natives of the islands, and from the remains of battle after battle between them, the image of the Santo Nino was discovered in a box. The box contained the unscathed image of the Child Jesus, which up to the present day is visited and honored in the Basilica Del Santo Niño in Cebu City, Philippines.
Every January, the Philippine nation celebrates and honors the Holy Child Jesus with processions, fluvial parades, dancing and prayers. At St. Justin’s we honor this tradition along with Filipino people around the world, by paying homage to the miracles that they have received from the Señor Santo Niño. We will see the ladies or “damas” of Queen Juana, dancing to the drumbeat of the Sinulog music. The Sinulog dance honors the San-to Niño and petitions are uttered after each step of the dance. The dancers accompany the Queen’s court as the Queen invokes the Santo Niño to listen to her prayers and continue to grant her petitions and those of her people. Following Queen Juana are children with flowers, and candy offerings. Filipinos believe that as a child, Jesus enjoys the presence and the company of little children.
National Collection for the Archdiocese of the Military Services (AMS) USA
The National Collection for the Archdiocese of the Military Services USA is taken up once every three years. The collection for this will be Saturday and Sunday, January 18 and 19 at all of the Masses. Envelopes will be in the pews. The AMS operates on a very tight budget and is grate-ful for the generous spirit throughout our country, including its many veterans and military families.

THIS IS MY BELOVED SON This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in Jesus—but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his pro-phetic mission and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in wa-ter goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heav-en echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Valentine’s cards have appeared at the shopping mall, but in the Church it is still Christmas. Today’s feast spun off from Epiphany. Originally, a blessing of holy water was an important feature of the Epiphany feast, and in the Greek Church, this was a day for leaping into the sea in grateful recollection of baptism. The gratitude may not be quite as profound among the Orthodox Christians who have to chop holes in the ice to plunge into the waters! Still, there are few better days to celebrate a baptism, and to plunge our hands into the waters of the font. Jesus found the waters of the Jordan irresistible because of what had been done in those waters: people had confessed their sins, and had acknowledged their need to be forgiven and healed. Today, we are the people in the water, and Christ comes to be with us. You won’t have to chop a hole in the ice to celebrate your baptism. A beautiful bowl of water on the table tonight, a toast with spar-kling water at dinner, or even a leap into the shower with a sign of the cross and a prayer of thanksgiving will suffice! —James Field, Copyright © J. Nació en Poitiers (Francia) y durante su juventud abrazó el cristianismo junto con toda su familia. Gracias a su ejemplo cristiano, su misma gente lo eligió como obispo en el año 353. Como obispo destacó por su formación intelectual y su firmeza en la defensa de la fe, especialmente contra los arrianos, un grupo de cristianos que negaban la divinidad de Cristo. Fue desterrado a Frigia (Asia) en el año 356, pero esto no le impidió defender a la Iglesia de los ataques, debatiendo incluso, a los obispos arrianos. Debido a la firmeza y conocimiento de causa con que combatía a sus interlocutores, los mismos arrianos pidieron al Emperador que lo regresara a casa, a su Iglesia, donde se habían mantenido fieles a sus enseñanzas. Con los obispos que habían cedido a los arrianos fue firme para hacerles ver sus errores, pero compasivo en su trato con ellos. ESTE ES MI HIJO MUY AMADO Con la celebración del Bautismo del Señor este domingo concluye el tiem-po de Navidad. En las lecturas vemos más de una epifanía o manifestación del Espíritu de Dios en Jesús, sólo que esta vez ya no como niño, sino como adulto. El Bautismo de Jesús es también la inauguración de su misión profética y de la era mesiánica. En la lectura de hoy Isaías describe al Mesías elegido por Dios sobre el cual ha puesto su Espíritu. En los Hechos de los Apóstoles Pedro dice que “Dios ungió con el poder del Espíritu Santo a Jesús de Nazaret” (Hechos 10:38). Finalmente, en las proclamación del Evangelio de Mateo el Bautismo de Jesús en el agua casi pasa desapercibido. El momento crucial ocurre cuando el Espíritu de Dios desciende sobre Jesús y una voz del cielo viene como un eco de las palabras de Isaías: “Éste es mi Hijo muy amado, en quien tengo mis com-placencias” (Mateo 3:17). La Iglesia Católica y otros proveedores de servicios confí en el Censo nacional para proporcionar un conteo preciso con el fin de server de manera efectiva a los necesitados.” Usted puede hacer la diferencia en los lugares donde vivimos, trabajamos y adoramos. REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Celebremos el Bautismo de Jesús
Jesús es bautizado, y el Padre y el Espíritu Santo mani-fiestan su aprobación y su agrado (EVANGELIO). Somos llamados a preparar el camino del Señor, que llega a apacen-tar a su rebano (PRIMERA LECTURA). Él vino a salvarnos por su misericordia, por medio del bautismo, y nos hizo herederos de la vida eterna (SEGUNDA LECTURA).
Isaías 42, 1-4. 6-7 Esto dice el Señor:
“Miren a mi siervo, a quien sostengo, a mi elegido, en quien tengo mis complacencias. En él he puesto mi espíritu para que haga brillar la justicia sobre las naciones.
No gritará, no clamará, no hará oír su voz por las calles; no romperá la caña resquebrajada, ni apagará la mecha que aún humea. Promoverá con firmeza la justicia, no titubeará ni se doblegará hasta haber establecido el derecho sobre la tierra y hasta que las islas escuchen su enseñanza.
Yo, el Señor, fiel a mi designio de salvación, te llamé, te tomé de la mano, te he formado y te he constituido alian-za de un pueblo, luz de las naciones, para que abras los ojos de los ciegos, saques a los cautivos de la prisión y de la mazmorra a los que habitan en tinieblas”.
Hechos 10, 34-38 En aquellos días, Pedro se dirigió a Cornelio y a los
que estaban en su casa, con estas palabras: “Ahora caigo en la cuenta de que Dios no hace distinción de personas, sino que acepta al que lo teme y practica la justicia, sea de la nación que fuere. Él envió su palabra a los hijos de Israel, para anunciarles la paz por medio de Jesucristo, Señor de todos.
Ya saben ustedes lo sucedido en toda Judea, que tuvo principio en Galilea, después del bautismo predicado por Juan: cómo Dios ungió con el poder del Espíritu Santo a Jesús de Nazaret, y cómo éste pasó haciendo el bien, sanan-do a todos los oprimidos por el diablo, porque Dios estaba con él”.
Evangelio Lectura del santo evangelio según san Mateo 3, 13-17
En aquel tiempo, Jesús llegó de Galilea al río Jordán y le pidió a Juan que lo bautizara. Pero Juan se resistía, dicien-do: “Yo soy quien debe ser bautizado por ti, ¿y tú vienes a que yo te bautice?” Jesús le respondió: “Haz ahora lo que te digo, porque es necesario que así cumplamos todo lo que Dios quiere”. Entonces Juan accedió a bautizarlo.
Al salir Jesús del agua, una vez bautizado, se le abrieron los cielos y vio al Espíritu de Dios, que descendía sobre él en forma de paloma y oyó una voz que decía desde el cielo: “Éste es mi Hijo muy amado, en quien tengo mis complacencias”.

El día que Jesús se presentó entre los pecadores para recibir un bautismo de penitencia de manos de Juan, mientras oraba “se abrió el cielo y el Espíritu
Santo bajo sobre él en forma sensible como de una paloma”. *En ese momento Jesús iniciaba su vida pública, y quiso representar a quienes iba a redimir en la cruz. *Pero el Padre del cielo hizo constar: “Tu eres mi Hijo, el predilecto; en ti me complazco”, con lo cual indicaba que en realidad Jesús no necesitaba ser per-donado de nada, ya que estaba totalmente libre de pecado. *Todos nosotros nacimos con la triste herencia del pecado original, y cuando recibimos el sacramento del Bautismo, quedamos libres de todo pecado y fui-mos hechos “hijos en el Hijo”, y nuestro Padre también se complació en no-sotros. *Por eso se nos bautiza desde pequeños, porque la Iglesia quiere que gocemos de la gracia de Dios, que nos santifica y nos configura con Cristo, para poder integrarnos plenamente al Cuerpo Místico desde una edad temprana.
Cuando celebramos el Bautismo de Jesús, celebramos nuestro propio Bautismo.
Pequeñas reflexiones Dios interrumpe pero no abandona
“Pero yo la conquistaré de nuevo, la llevaré al desierto y allí le hablaré con ternura. Allí le devolveré sus viñas y transformaré su valle de Penas en entrada hacia la Esperanza. Ella me responderá allí, cantando con gozo, tal como en los días de su juventud, como en el día cuando la saqué de Egipto”.
Lo más difícil para nosotros como seres limitados es entender a Dios, ¿cierto? Tomemos por ejemplo este texto del libro de Oseas donde Dios usa el desierto para conquistarnos, hablarnos al corazón y transformarnos. Me imagi-no que si alguien te invita a una cita amorosa para conquistarte te invitará a una cena lujosa, quizás al cine, a lo mejor te compre flores y chocolates, pero… ¿una cita amorosa en el desierto?
Hagamos uso de la imaginación por un momento con esta conversación: Esposo: Mi amor, ¿adivina qué?, ¡te tengo una sorpresa! ¿Adivina dónde
iremos para nuestra luna de miel? Esposa: ¿París? Esposo: No mi amor, ¡mejor que París! Esposa: ¿Grecia? Esposo: No mi amor ¡es mejor que Grecia! Esposa: ¡Dios mío! Mi amor, ¿dónde?! ¡Por favor dime que muero por
saberlo! Esposo: Te llevaré al desierto. . . Dios está usando este momento de interrupción para conquistarte ¡¿Te
imaginas?! El Dios y creador de todo lo visible e invisible te ama tanto que anhela con deseo ardiente estar contigo y enamorarte hasta que seas inevita-blemente transformado y sanado por su amor. No solo quiere amarte, sanarte y transformarte, sino que también quiere prepararte. La aridez propia del desierto hace que el dolor y la confusión no permitan ver con claridad lo que Dios está haciendo y por qué lo está haciendo. Dios interrumpe, ¡pero jamás abandona! Tomemos el ejemplo del relato del bautismo de Jesús.
“Por aquellos días, Jesús salió de Nazaret, que está en la región de Gali-lea, y Juan lo bautizó en el Jordán. En el momento de salir del agua, Jesús vio que el cielo se abría y que el Espíritu bajaba sobre él como una paloma. Y se oyó una voz del cielo, que decía: «Tú eres mi Hijo amado, a quien he elegi-do»”. (Marcos 1, 9-11) continuará…
