“DIGESTI NG” THE GOSPEL . . .
Many of us reached God’s call earlier than we could consciously hear it. At Baptism, our parents and godparents answered that call for us. It was a good start to follow God and discover Christ who says of himself: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.“ We grow up all our lives to understand and accept this truth, to consciously answer this call. It is similar to St. Peter’s famous confession. Peter professed his faith when Jesus’ teaching seemed too difficult. Many of the disciples just left to find maybe some less demanding teacher. Jesus saw this and therefore asked his disciples, “Do you also want to leave?” And then came the honest answer of St. Peter: “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.“ All of us, priests and lay people, often face difficult faith questions. It is not a shame to admit that. Even great saints did so! Doubts arise in our heads, darkness may cover the walls of our hearts, and then Christ comes up and asks us: “Do you also want to leave?” He does not beg out of despair: “Please don’t go! Stay with me! I beg you, stay!” No. He simply asks you and me the same question he asked his first disciples: “Do you also want to leave?” It has always amazed me. Jesus does not play any games with us. He is straightforward and wants us to be honest and transparent when approaching him. No masks on (even during pandemic!), no actors, no pretending, no guile! These days, many Christians seek God beyond the reality created by the grace of Baptism, somewhere outside the Church. They are looking for contact with God, inner peace, happiness in Buddhism, yoga, and various ways of eastern meditation. The famous Trappist monk, mystic, and philosopher Thomas Merton went to the Far East to study Buddhist spirituality, its method of prayer and meditation. He was hungry for contact with God. Ultimately, he found what he was looking for in the Trappist community. While studying at Columbia University, Merton became friends with the Hindi swami (teacher) Brahmachari. He had many passionate conversations with him related to the spirituality of the East and the West. When Merton asked his interlocutor to point out some valuable books on spirituality, to his surprise, Brahmachari did not point him to any meditative or mystical writing of the East, but to “The Imitation of Christ” by Thomas à Kempis, and “The Confessions” of St. Augustine. Now different story... Greg was the only child. Parents took care of everything. They sent him to an elite school, after which he got a good, well-paid job. During his studies, his parents bought him a fancy car, dressed in designer clothes, and he had his own bank account. In his El Dorado, he lacked nothing, yet he did not receive what is most important in life, the values that give the deepest meaning to our existence. Soon he quit his job and began to lead a hippie lifestyle. Drugs, alcohol, and sex were now his only “values.” However, he did not find peace in all this. He started looking for the answers in various religious sects. Today Greg belongs to a community whose members do not drink alcohol, do not use drugs, do not smoke cigarettes, eat only one meal a day, sleep on a thin mat, wear coarse clothes, do not have money or expensive stuff, do not watch TV or read newspapers, they pray and meditate eleven hours a day. Greg belongs to a Buddhist group in Thailand. He found peace of mind. But is this peace of mind enough? Nobody knows how long he will stay in this group. During a conversation with his parish priest, Greg’s colleague said: “I cannot understand why young people, fleeing all this consumerism, noise, and “rat race,” seek solitude and inner peace somewhere in the Far East, in the practices of Buddhism, while all this is given here, so close to us, at hand. It is enough to stop whatever we do, whenever you are, and simply enter the nearest church for a moment of prayer, meditation and adoration. Then you will be overwhelmed by an extraordinary, holy silence. Sometimes words are not necessary. Silence. Holy Presence. Peace emanates from every corner of this sacred building. Then I feel the presence of Christ and his Mother. Peace envelops my soul, and my heart wants to sing a song of joy and adoration. I find there everything that some of my friends are looking for very far, in Buddhist monasteries.
A Few Words From Fr. Sylwester
5
Jesus gives what we want, what we truly desire. The apostles asked him where he was staying, and he replied, “Come and see.” They followed him and found what they were looking for.”
To every seeker, Christ says: “Come and you will see where I live.” Certainly, the church building is the right place to meet Christ and find what is missing in the busy, consumerist world. How many of us realized this truth when we could not come here and pray due to pandemic restrictions... The only shelter in this crazy world has been closed. However, let’s not forget that not a place is the most important in our encounter with God because even here, in church, we can miss Christ. Yes, we meet the statue of Our Lady or St. Anthony, we meet many of our friends, meet our priests and deacons, but Christ? Where is Christ in all this? Have we met him that particular Sunday?
The church, both a magnificent basilica and a small wooden village church, is a sacred space, but it is more important to meet Christ in person. During pandemic Sunday Mass obligation is suspended, but it’s good to remind ourselves that each and every time we miss Sunday Mass without a serious reason, we commit a grave (mortal) sin which requires seeking God’s forgiveness in a sacramental Confession, for it breaks our bond and communion with God. We have intentionally said ‘no’ into God’s face. And spiritual advice: instead of saying, “I missed church or Sunday Mass,” let’s say, “I missed Christ...” It helps us better understand what Sunday Mass is all about. Unfortunately, many Christians misinterpret this truth and claim that God is everywhere so that you can pray everywhere, which means NEVER in church! This is really unfair to say something like this: “I believe in Christ, but do not go to church at all!” These are not words addressed to the Church or to a particular priest; these are words addressed to Christ, for He is is the Founder and Head of this Church. This is Christ’s Church! He is the Head, and we are the Body. “I believe in you, Jesus, but this Church is not for me, I am not interested in it,” is rather telling Jesus into his face: “I am not interested in the Eucharist, in your Body and Blood that you give freely so that I could have life within me...” Our homebound parishioners and sick family members would give everything for being able to come here, maybe this one time, maybe for a brief moment only, and attend Mass in their beloved church, feel this sacred presence, peace, community. They truly understand that the Church is not only a building, a priest, congregation, music, ministries, but most of all, the Real Presence of Living Christ in the Eucharist. While receiving his Body and Blood, we can feel in our hearts the peace that only God can give, we can receive God’s blessing for the whole week, we can go home changed. And we can truly repeat after St. Andrew: “We have found Christ.” We have found Him, and He changed our lives forever!
With Prayers,
Father Sylwester

With Prayers,
Father Sylwester
I extend my own prayers and sympathy, as well as that of Father Sylwester and the whole parish to Dee Casapulla and her many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren on the loss of her husband and their father, Deacon James Casapulla, who was buried from Saint Anthony's last Saturday at the age of 84.. With his ordination as a permanent deacon by Bishop Frank Rodimer in 1982, Jim inaugurated an entirely new form of ministry here at Saint Anthony's as the first of the seven men who have served the parish in that role. Not everyone at Saint Anthony's was initially entirely receptive to the idea of the permanent diaconate forty years ago, and the ease and acceptance with which our deacons minister today is very much a product of the abilities and sensibilities, the patience and determination which Deacon Jim brought to the role. He moved seamlessly from providing for the health concerns of the community, to the spiritual health of the parish, until his own retirement to Florida some years ago. May the holy Deacons, Stephen and Lawrence, Ephrem and Francis of Assisi, welcome him to the heavenly Kingdom.
During my convalescence I have been surprised - and humbled - by the number of people who have reached out to me. One of my old Youth Group leaders from my Montville days (1981-1986) called me yesterday, and among many other things in a long conversation, she mentioned that she and her family often "troll" through various parish Masses on Sunday mornings. She told me that we have the best quality live stream Mass available on Sunday morning! I said thank you and humbly admitted that she was right. Thank you to all those whose energy, ingenuity, and dedication have made it a reality. God Bless you all. Fr. Ray
