All of her frustration, hard work and patience paid off Wednes- day as she won the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Queens. Kulick of Union, N.J., who a year ago made history by becom- ing the first woman to earn a full- time exemption on the Denny’s Professional Bowlers Associa- tion Tour, defeated Diandra Asbaty of Chicago 192-143 at AMF Carolina Lanes to win the biggest and most prestigious title in women’s bowling. “I’ve worked very hard at my game for a long time,” Kulick said. “I’ve had a full year of prac- tice and that was a big time ad- vantage. After the year that I’ve had, this is the icing on the cake. This is the big blowout of the candle.” Kulick vaulted into the lead in the championship match af- ter Asbaty left a 3-4-6-7-10 split in the eighth frame. Asbaty then left another split in the ninth frame, allowing Kulick to step up and seal the victory with two strikes. “I didn’t even look at the scoreboard, but after she left those splits I knew I just needed to step up and nail a couple shots,” Kulick said. “That strike on the left lane in the eighth frame really put it away.” Asbaty, a two-time U.S. Amateur champion and nine- time Team USA member, said she never got comfortable in the championship match. “I just didn’t line up right and I didn’t make good decisions,” Asbaty said. “I just didn’t get comfortable and with only one game for a title it’s very impor- tant to get comfortable.” On the way to the title, Kulick defeated three-time Queens champion Wendy Macpherson of Henderson, Nev., and then knocked off Kristal Scott of Lawrence, Kan., in the semifi- nal. In the opening match, Macpherson advanced by de- feating Team USA’s Shannon O’Keefe of Rochester, N.Y. Kulick took home $30,000 for first place in addition to the Queens tiara, pendant and crys- tal trophy. Asbaty earned $18,000 for second. The USBC Queens, which is presented by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, fea- tured a field of 344 of the top female bowlers in the world com- peting for a total prize fund of $200,000. HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. - Lucy Sandelin of Tampa, Fla., charged out of the contenders bracket Wednesday to race away with the United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens title at Northcross Lanes. In a showdown between USBC Hall of Famers, the once- beaten Sandelin overwhelmed previously undefeated Virginia Norton of Cypress, Calif., 680-563 and 645-546, to win the double-elimination title con- test. Sandelin, a Senior Queens “rookie” at age 50, earned $4,500 while Norton took home $2,800 as runner-up. Sandelin was in control from the start, rolling a 257 out of the gate while Norton struggled with her line to the pocket all day. “I needed a `get out of jail free’ card, but never got one,” Norton said. “Not that it would have mattered. Lucy bowled great.” “As long as I kept my bal- ance, I felt like I could make a good shot,” Sandelin said. “If it carried, great. If not, I made my spares. It was just me against the lane. I had key words I kept saying to myself. It was part of our train- ing when I was on Team USA, and it worked. I could easily have started looking ahead, but stayed in the here-and-now, and it kept me focused.” For Sandelin, the Senior Queens tiara was a monumental triumph in more ways than one. “I stopped bowling com- pletely for two years,” she said. “I got burned out after the 2003 WTBA World Championships in Malaysia. I was just physically and mentally drained. And then, in January 2005, I was diagnosed with fallopian tube cancer, so I took another year going through chemotherapy and getting well.” With her 50th birthday on the horizon, she decided it was time to get involved again. “I kept coaching my high school bowling group during that time, which kept me involved in the sport, but I decided I had an opportunity to be a rookie in Senior Queens - you only turn 50 once - and I thought it would be fun,” Sandelin said. “Last November I started getting get- ting ready. I joined a handicap league and I started doing pri- vate lessons, and I started bowl- ing better. I think it was because when you’re coaching, you fo- cus on fundamentals and I started listening to myself. “The key in coming to the Senior Queens was I just wanted to have fun. I didn’t need to do it. I didn’t need to win. What- ever happened today was OK.” “Virginia is awesome, such a class bowler,”. Corky De MaioSan Bernardino’sGreatest Bowler

Nears 50thAnniversary

by Frank WeilerNext season will mark 50

years as a kegler for Citrus BeltHall of Famer Corky De Maio.He never bowled as a youth, andonly tried the sport after takinga part time job at Citrus BeltLanes in the late 1950s. It wasthe best thing he ever did, meet-ing Shirley, his wife, the love ofhis life while working the desk.

As a result of his bowling jobCorky started practicing, some-times bowling ten or more gamesafter league play. Within twoyears he rolled his first 300 withan ACE rubber ball. Since that1960 perfecto he has rolled over30 certified (formerly sanc-tioned) perfect games and over50 counting those in non-leagueplay. He has ten 800’s (threecertified), with a 847 being hishigh. The 847 was bowled witha NU-LINE Extreme ball. Beingan original stockholder in theNU-LINE company, DeMaioused their equipment for severalyears. His all-time favorite ballis the NU-LINE Excalibur.

One of the highlights of DeMaio’s career was winning twoof three games from Billy Weluin a 1960’s match. He averagedabout 220 to defeat Welu, after“shooting” over 800 in threepractice games before the match. It was Billy Welu who changedDe Maio from a full roller to athree quarter roller, to his advan-tage.

In addition to beating Welu,De Maio has won over twentySuper Senior Tour or West CoastSenior Tour titles, a Citrus BeltSenior Masters title, four CitrusBelt Senior Scratch All-Eventstitles (three consecutive), andclose to twenty Citrus Belt regu-lar and senior titles. He holds therecord for Citrus Belt senior titleswith 13. There have been doz-ens of other titles including a winin a 1990 PBA qualifying event.Did I mention 46 years of aver-aging 200 or better! Now youknow why De Maio is SanBernardino’s greatest bowler ofall time.

Everyone who has everbowled against Corky in matchplay knows there is no one bet-ter in the clutch. He doesn’tmake any mistakes, is a masterat reading lanes and making ad-justments.

De Maio became a ball drillerin 1972 at Del Rosa Lanes. Heworked in the pro-shop thereuntil 1979. In 1980 he opened apro-shop in his garage and hasbeen there ever since. He is thepremier ball driller in the inlandempire, with a reputation forknowing more about bowlingballs, surfaces and layouts thananyone. Scratch bowlers fromthroughout southern Californiadrive a hundred or more miles tohis pro-shop to have a balldrilled.

With all that he has accom-plished, Corky feels the bestbowler in the De Maio familywill ultimately be his grand-daughter Demi. As a twelve yearold, she recently won the DelRosa Lanes junior bowler of theyear tourney.

Corky would like to thankhis children (Kenny, Chris, andDarren) and lovely wife Shirleyfor supporting him through theyears. Thank you CaliforniaBowling News for supportingour Citrus Belt bowlers.

LAKE ELSINORE – Michel (Michael) Knight, proprietor ofthe new TREVI ZONE and Illusion Entertainment Center, gave mea guided tour of his new 92,000 square foot facility this past Friday,I was impressed.

Without a doubt this bowling center and adjoining facilities(sports bar and grill, restaurant, ice cream/juice bar, adult and youthgame rooms, VIP room, private party rooms and private bowlingrooms) should be called a “BOWLING PALACE”. The luxurious-ness of the interior makes me want to call it Palace Lanes. Bowlingfit for a King! The décor is Italian/Venetian, in the Renaissancestyle. The main entry greets bowlers, diners and gamers with genu-ine marble railings, columns and statues. There are chandeliers andtiled floors throughout.

If you’ve seen the Venetian or Bellagio hotel/casino in Vegas, you have an idea of what TREVI ZONE will be like – “Fantastico”!

There will be 48 Brunswick lanes, twenty four on each side of acentral concourse. Four lanes at the end of each side are enclosedwithin a private room. These rooms also include comfortable sofas,

Lake Elsinore’s Trevi Zone to Open This Month

300 gallon aquarium and marble fireplace. These private bowlingrooms may be reserved for parties.

If you wish to have a bowling party in a private room, with fourprivate lanes, call Theresa at TREVI ZONE (951) 674-6080.

Food and drink service on the lanes will be first class. There willbe waitresses available to take care of your every need. Each wait-ress will have a handheld computer menu from which bowlers orderfood and drinks. Runners bring your order directly to the lanes.

The center will have wireless internet service available, so bringyour laptops and work while you watch your kids bowl.

The center will host league play, open bowling, parties, cosmicbowling and tournaments. Mr. Knight is hoping to host a SuperSenior Tour event in May, and start summer leagues the first weekof June.

The Illusion Restaurant and Banquet facility will seat up to 400.It will feature an international buffet, and live entertainment whenthe room is not booked for large parties. Illusion will be opening latesummer.

The Carrot Bar and Lounge will seat 300. It will feature a sev-enty foot bar, twenty eight booths, thirty tables seating six, elevencouches, twelve 42 inch plasma screens, three 200 inch projectorscreens, and three pool tables. A sky box VIP room sits above thesports bar and features a pool table, fire place and massage chairs.

The facility will also house a bowling pro shop, two 6,000 squarefeet game rooms and 42 luxurious rest rooms.

TREVI ZONE is located at 32250 Mission Trail in Lake Elsinore.Just take the Diamond Drive exit off the I-15 freeway west toMission Trail, turn left and go 500 feet. The lanes will be on yourleft, where the old K-Mart used to be located.

Proprietors Michele and Mei Knight assured me his bowlingprices will be below current market pricing in southern California, and that his employees will be friendly, courteous and service ori-ented. If you have any questions about TREVI ZONE, please call(951) 674-6080. Thank you California Bowling News for support-ing Citrus Belt bowlers.

In a poll conducted by International Bowlers Journal, JohnBerglund, Executive Director of the Bowling Proprietors Associa-tion of America, was chosen as the most influential individual inbowling.

Berglund’s choice was not surprising to me. I was among theselect group to cast a vote. In my judgment, the choice of thepersonable BPAA honcho was a no-brainer.

Who is John Berglund ? How did they find him? And what hashe brought to the BPAA?

John Berglund received a B.A., History from Valparaiso Univer-sity, Valparaiso, Ind., and his J.D., Law from the University of SanDiego School of Law. He is married and has two children.

John F. Berglund serves as the Executive Director for the Bowl-ing Proprietors’ Association of America, an association of over 3,200bowling centers throughout the United States and internationally.Additionally, he serves as the President of Strike Ten Entertainmentas well as Executive Director of the International Bowling Pro Shopsand Instructors (IBPSIA) both headquartered in Arlington, Texas.

Prior to his present position, he had an extensive background intrade association management, including his role as Executive Direc-tor for the Minnesota Bowling Proprietors Association, which isaffiliated with the BPAA.

Among many of his association-related honors and activities arethe following:

·Award of Excellence for Education and Training—MinnesotaSociety of Association Executives.

·Award of Excellence for Magazine/Journal—Minnesota Soci-ety of Association Executives.

·Top Honors, Gold Circle Award, Most Improved Magazine—American Society of Association Executives.

·Authored Article on “Trade Show Success”—American Man-agement Magazine.

·Seminar Presenter, “Developing an Effective Position Paper” –The ASAE Management Conference.

This impressive resume’ is further enhanced by the incrediblesuccess he has had in uniting the principal integers of bowling;namely the manufacturers, the United States Bowling Congress, and the Professional Bowlers Association. Although some proph-ets of doom predict a gloomy outlook, the future of the game looksencouraging, simply due to the fact that Mr.Berglund has achievedwhat no other individual in bowling has ever accomplished. He issurely responsible for the compatibility, harmony, rapport and unitythat currently exist among the major forces of the bowling industry;above all, UNITY that transcends into the fulfillment of one com-mon goal … the promotion of bowling for the betterment of thegame. More important, John Berglund has accomplished this feat ina mere span of five years!

Personally, I can attest to John Berglund’s communicable per-sonality. I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with John on severalprojects and have never met anyone in the upper echelon of anyorganization who was so congenial and cooperative.

One of the most brilliant coups Mr. Berglund engineered wastaking on board the International Bowling Pro Shops Instructional

Association. (IBPSIA) Thisgroup, with a membership of 500or so, was organized to provideeducation, communication, andrecognition for bowling pro shopprofessionals and instructors. They provide a foundation forthe advancement of the world-wide bowling industry. IBPSIAhas become one of the most im-portant participants in BowlExpo…. and Bowl Expo has ab-solutely mushroomed underBerglund’s supervision.

Another feather to his cap isthat he persuaded the BowlingWriters Association of Americato hold their convention in con-junction with Bowl Expo. Forover 50 years, the BWAA heldtheir convention in conjunctionwith the ABC convention. TheBWAA membership felt it wastime for a change. Seizing theopportunity, Berglund made theBWAA an offer they couldn’trefuse. The BWAA membershipvoted to accept Mr. Berglund’sproposal and, as expected, bothparties benefited from the agree-ment, particularly the BPAA.How better could the BPAApublicize Bowl Expo than hav-ing over 50 bowling writers inattendance?

In the political arena, becauseof his unique ability to interactwith allies and foes alike, RonaldReagan established a legacy as“The Great Communicator”

In the bowling world, JohnBergland is well on his way toestablishing his own reputationas the “Great Communicator”!

West CoastJr. Elims

by David GordonNORWALK – Welcome back

to another week of tracking yourfavorite Elims bowler, here atKeystone Lanes. Last Saturdaywas the final day to join this sum-mer program and two more werebrought on board just under thedeadline. Some very nice scoringwas on hand as some tested thelow side during make-ups, whileour session and subsequent pre-bowls were up on the high side.

In the normal session we findPreston Fukumizu leading the day, with reportable scoring of 216-228-234/877. Joining the 800 clubwas Mark Curtis 248-259/873,Joey Marino 248-256/873, BrentShern 217-200-223/835, EddieSayles 230-232/826, and EricMilne 212-205-226/817. Nowthat’s the way to bowl gentlemen, you’ll have to teach me some day.Additional scores came in fromMichael Gaylor 224-204/757, JonMorales 216/700, and KimFerdnance 204.

We had quite a number ofbowlers missing due to Pepsi Statefinals up north and I hope every-one did well. We made up for itwith a number of make-ups andpre-bowls. Some notables from themake-ups were Sayles 230/771and Shern 227/743. But the onethat really took advantage tocatch up by bowling two make-upsessions was Fukumizu. One ses-sion included 200-269/878, whilethe other session he posted 227-211-247/876. Now that’s catch-ing up in a hurry and big time.

We also had some very nicepre-bowls, but that will have towait until that week is posted. Totease you a little though, let’s justsay the high series mark will beover 1000 for four games.

This coming Saturday will besession 4 and 5. That’s right adouble session with the first onestarting off at 12:30. The secondsession is scheduled for our nor-mal 2:00 start. That means thatbowlers need to be on time andready to bowl at 12:30. Also re-member that the last two weeks

Cerritos JrsCERRITOS—Before we get to

those high scores. Just a reminderthat the “Youth Meets the Com-munity” Tournament is next weekMay 12th, directly after bowling.Be sure all tickets and monies areturned in prior to the tournament.

In the Lil Raiders it was ElijahJ-Church leading the way with a85-127-212, Garrett Lee follow-ing with a 97-185, and Jarred Deebowled a 95-175. Isabel Manalohad a 71-94-165, KaitlynJohnston bowled a 82-151.

In the Rookies it was SebastianMilitant who sat the pace, bowl-ing a 117-100-96-313, TylerSweet kept that pace going bybowling a 109-293, and SeanDantas had no problem with thepace either, bowling a 120-290.Kaila Chen bowled a 124-120-97-341, April Ramirez fired herself a108-255, and Kris Liberatorebowled a 90-224.

The Striking Force divisionhad some pin smashing scores.Ryan Jocson bowled a 125-156-141-422, Robert Lim had a 169-403, and Spencer Van Rijbergenbowled a 145-393. Kyli Selley wason fire today. She bowled a 132-144-132-408, Akeyla Basto keptthose fires burning by bowling a148-406, and Tasha Jansen fol-lowed suit by bowling a 134-354.

The Senior division were ontheir mark today. Glenn Gimenobowled a 174-171-212-557, NickMansfield bowled a 211-549, andBuddy Lucas bowled a 214-535.Lizzy Raya started things off forthe girls. Lizzy bowled a 149-190-163-442, Devanie Dollard had a116-356, and Alexis Adinolfibowled a 129-321. Good luck andbest wishes goes out to those whoare bowling in the Pepsi Finals thisweekend.
