UNCASVILLE, Conn— When two titles are considered a down year, it can only mean the bar has been raised to an un- believably high level. Tommy Jones has raised the bar higher than any bowler in Denny’s PBA Tour history, cap- turing his 10th career title and second Major Sunday with a 257-222 win over Tony Reyes to win the 2007 PBA Tourna- ment of Champions at Mohegan Sun Arena. Jones won his 10 titles in two years, six months and seven days, breaking the PBA record for shortest time between first and 10 titles by four days. PBA legend Dick Weber held the record for 45 years until Jones salvaged what was considered a down year for the 28-year-old. Jones won his first career title in the 2004 Japan Cup and went on to win four titles in both 2004-05 and 2005-06, including his first Major in last season’s 63rd U.S. Open. He had won just one title this season coming into this week, but he dominated both his opponents on Sunday. “It feels great. I haven’t been bowling very well this season, but I worked with Del Ballard recently and I have to thank him for getting me back here,” said Jones, the 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year, of the 12-time titlist. “Next year I’m going to be back and ready to go again. I’m ready to win another Player of the Year.” Though he hasn’t been among the many bowlers in a crowded PBA Player of the Year race, Jones did take another step toward history, capturing his second of the PBA’s Triple Crown events. He only needs a World Championship title to become the fifth bowler in his- tory to win the Triple Crown. The title match was never in Raising The Bar doubt as Jones started with six consecutive strikes while Reyes, making his Tournament of Cham- pions debut, struggled with just one strike in the first four frames including an open in the 4th frame. Jones advanced to the title match with a 279-238 win over the defending champion Chris Barnes. On the 40th anniversary of the Tour’s first-ever televised 300 game in the 1967 Tourna- ment of Champions, Jones looked like he might repeat the feat, starting with the first seven strikes. A 10-pin in the 8th frame foiled the effort, but he recov- ered with four consecutive strikes to close out the match. Reyes advanced to the title match with a 215-206 win over Norm Duke. Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) earned $60,000 for the win. Reyes (San Bruno, Calif.) took home $20,000 for second, while Barnes (Double Oak, Texas) and Duke (Clermont, Fla.) earned $10,000 each for third and fourth, respectively. The Tournament of Champi- ons wraps up the 2006-07 Denny’s PBA Tour season. Next week, six bowlers will compete in a special winner-take-all event, the 2007 Motel 6 Roll to Riches at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Colum- bus, Ohio. The Major winners from this season (Doug Kent, Jones and Pete Weber), PBA World Point Rankings leader (Wes Malott) and two bowlers from an on-line fan vote (Duke, Walter Ray Williams Jr.) will compete for the $150,000 top prize. YORBA LINDA—It was yet another fun filled weekend for everyone at Yorba Linda Bowl with the 7 th Annual Jim Lee Memorial WWPB Mixed Doubles Championship spon- sored by Hammer! Debbie Ayers and Chris Glossner will remem- ber the days fondly as the WWPB’s newest mixed doubles champions. Hovering near the top slot all weekend, Chris and Debbie made their move the last block of match play Sunday afternoon. Debbie took charge following a power lunch. “I was able to move in with an aggressive ball and stayed out of trouble”, Debbie remarked. She contin- ued, “The guys all bowled so great, so I knew I had to step up”. For her fifth WWPB title, Debbie wanted to be sure to thank Alvin Lou for drilling her last three balls she was able to use over the course of the week- end. She also wanted to thank her husband, Steve Ayers, for finding her such a great partner in Chris, Jim Hornung and his staff at Yorba Linda Bowl, and her children, Michael and Krista, for staying home to help care for her mother so that she could come bowl. Debbie is a 15 time San Diego All Star and a two- time Southern California All Star. She is also a member of the San Diego Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame. “Debbie is a great partner who struck when I didn’t”, stated Chris as he reflected upon this victory. Chris also wanted to thank his wife, Sayaji, for staying home with their daughters, Napua (4) and Kiana (2), so that he can come out to bowl. “I knew I couldn’t miss, watching every- one strike around me – I had to keep pace”, Chris noted on the great bowling by everyone this weekend. INLAND EMPIRE—Longtime inland empire bowling offi-cial Lee Fitzgerald has beenelected to the Citrus Belt Hall ofFame for meritorious service.Lee is being rewarded for overtwenty-five years of non-paidvolunteer work with youthbowlers and our local bowlingassociations. She joins her hus-band John in our Hall of Fame, and they become the first andonly married couple to be en-shrined.

Lee started her bowling ca-reer by running the youth pro-gram at the old San Hi Lanes inthe early 1980s. She increasedparticipation from 24 youthbowlers to 160 within a few sea-sons. During this period she at-tained various CCI coaching cer-tificates, including junior andAdult Level-2.

After San Hi Lanes closed,Lee assumed the role of YouthDirector at Del Rosa Lanes.Under her leadership the DelRosa youth program has grownfrom about 50 youth bowlers to150. Thanks to Lee, Del RosaLanes is now full of youthbowlers on Saturdays. In fact, itis so full that a second Saturdaysquad is necessary in some ses-sions.

In 1996, Lee became Secre-tary of the Citrus Belt YouthBowling Association. She wasinstrumental in helping YABAnational headquarters come

online with the WinLabs com-puter program, as well as manyof the youth bowling associa-tions nation wide. She assistedin the presentation of WinLabworkshops which trained youthdirectors and league secretaries.

From 1992 to 2002Fitzgerald served as a Citrus BeltWomens Bowling Associationhouse director for San Hi Lanes. She rose from house director toThird Vice President by the timethe women’s association com-bined with the Citrus Belt Men’sBowling Association.

In 2005 Lee was selected asassociation manager of the newlyformed Citrus Belt USBC As-sociation.

Over the years, Lee has at-tended numerous state and na-tional bowling conventions forthe Citrus Belt Women’s Bowl-ing Association and the Califor-nia Youth Bowling Association. Now she does the same for theCitrus Belt USBC Association. She has organized numerousfundraisers, worked hundreds oflocal tournaments, coached thou-sands of youth bowlers and wasa leader in three bowling asso-ciations. She truly is a Hall ofFamer in the eyes of Citrus Beltbowlers.

It’s a message that Brandi Chastainlearned early in her athletic career and one the two-time Olympicsoccer gold medalist brought Wednesday as the keynote speaker ofthe second annual United States Bowling Congress Convention atthe Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center.

One of the most famous women athletes in the country, Chastainimmediately felt right at home with the bowlers for whom she signedautographs in the morning, spoke to during the Convention’s firstbusiness session in the afternoon, and later in a seminar on youth.

“This is like a family reunion for me because bowling alwayswas a big family thing for us,” she said. “I was in a bowling centerwhile in daycare and later graduated to leagues.”

Being in a youth league helped teach Chastain the value of beingon a team which proved quite important when she eventually con-centrated more on soccer.

“Contribute your best qualities, your knowledge and your expe-rience to help the team get better,” was something she said shelearned.

Chastain’s speech highlighted the first of four days of businessslated for the 2007 USBC Convention. Attendees also took advan-tage of the first of more than 30 educational workshops targeted tofour key USBC initiatives — credibility of the game, the deliverynetwork, growing the sport and youth development. They alsovisited the exhibit area where USBC programs, industry organiza-tions and other companies were on display. And, they attendedcoaching clinics at nearby Hermitage Lanes when not enjoyingChastain reminisce about her soccer career and its parallels to bowl-ing.

“Soccer and bowling are similar in that you need that short mo-ment of concentration,” Chastain said. “Good players do it sometimes. Great players do it all the time.”

Chastain, who has continued to bowl through the years includ-ing events such as the ESPN’s Bowling Night Series in 2005, closedher speech with six components of going from good to great —competition, challenge, creativity, concentration, community andcelebration. After she concluded her speech, she received a specialsoccer-style bowling ball as a memento of her presentation.

USBC President Michael Carroll and Vice President SylviaBroyles then went through the crowd, asking several attendees theirreasons for attending. They then led several greeting exercises de-signed for people to meet those sitting around them with the goal ofbeing able to later use these people as resources.

Next was the Bowlers to Veterans Link presentation which high-lighted the many ways bowlers have helped current and past mili-tary people. Among those honored were USBC associations andpeople in the following categories:*Largest Contribution by a State — California, $209,317.14 *Larg-est Contribution by a Local Association — San Fernando ValleyWBA/Los Angeles BA, $39,002.*Largest State Contribution to BVL National — Virginia, $46,708.25.*Largest Local Association Contribution to BVL National — Nation’sCapital Area USBC, $13,000.*Most Successful Volunteer, “Bowlers Salute America” Troops —Jo Wisby.

The day concluded with awards presentations honoring the fol-lowing people:*Helen Baker Outstanding Association Volunteer of the Year Award— Sheri Cook, Farmington, N.M.*Joyce Deitch Trailblazer Award — Dan Ottman, Detroit (posthu-mously) *Kerm Helmer Horizon Award — Jeffrey Frye,Hackettstown, N.J.*David Dahms Coach of the Year — Teresa Wolcott, Sauquoit, N.Y.*Youth Program Volunteer of the Year — David Koppa, Santa Bar-bara, Calif.

USBC RAISES MORE THAN $1 MILLIONTO HELP CURE BREAST CANCER

Meet for the Cure ceremony ends busy final day at USBC Annual Meeting

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - For the first time, bowling has contrib-uted more than $1 million in a year to help the fight to cure breastcancer.

That announcement was made Saturday at the 2007 United StatesBowling Congress Annual Meeting when a check for $1,003,000was presented by USBC to the Susan G. Komen For The Cureduring the seventh-annual Meet for the Cure ceremony at the GaylordOpryland Resort and Convention Center.

Breast cancer survivors Bonnie Ruffin, Shalimar, Fla., and PaulineArmstrong, San Diego, presented the check to Susan G. Komen Forthe Cure Cause Marketing Manager Lori Rayfield and Vice Presi-dent of Resource Development Cindy Schneible. It brought thetotal from USBC and the former Women’s International BowlingCongress to more than $6 million.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Growing bowling as a sport is the futurefocus of the United States Bowling Congress as nearly 1,700 at-tendees at the 2007 USBC Annual Meeting at the Gaylord OprylandResort and Convention Center learned in many ways Friday.

Through speeches from organization leaders to the announce-ments of new television events to a new partnership with a majorsports player, everyone in Delta Ballroom A and those watchinglive on bowl.com, should have come away with the fact that USBCis headed in a new direction.

“We are talking about dramatically changing our focus from amember benefit organization to a sports organization,” said USBCChief Executive Officer Roger Dalkin. “We need to redirect yourpassion to the sport more than to the membership organization.”

The message actually started to be communicated earlier in theday, first by Darlene Baker, chair of the USBC Strategic PlanningCommittee, and later by USBC President Michael Carroll.

Baker noted that the new vision will be achieved when morepeople are recognizing bowling as a sport and more people areparticipating in bowling as a sport. Within those priority issues arethree goals:

*Increase USBC youth membership in certified leagues and pro-grams

*Increase the number of USBC members participating in bowl-ing as a sport

*Increase the number of people who recognize/perceive bowlingas a sport

“This change is one of the first actions we can take to be thatdifferent organization, the organization of the sport of bowling andto be the sport that deserves the recognition and respect of thepublic, as other sports,” Baker said.

Among the ways USBC will help increase the number of peoplewho recognize/perceive bowling as a sport is through televisionwith the announcement of USBC reviving the U.S. Women’s Openand sponsoring the new Professional Bowlers Association SummerSeries and Women’s Tour Trials which will create a 16-bowler ex-empt field for a 2007-08 PBA Women’s Tour. All events will betelevised in the fall on ESPN.

In addition, USBC Chief Officer Marketing and Communica-tions Tom Clark announced that basketball star Chris Paul, an avidbowler, will be USBC’s newest spokesperson. He will be involvedin a number of projects to help broaden the visibility and participa-tion of the sport of bowling.

“Today, bowling is in a period of transformation or evolution,”Carroll said. “The true measurement of turning the corner will notbe as much in our membership numbers as it will be in the recogni-tion of bowling at the national level; of truly seeing bowling as asport again in the eyes of the general public.”

Carroll said one way for associations to help grow the sport is toapprove the amendment which calls for all to be merged by March15, 2009.

“The only way we truly can grow the sport is through a unifiedUSBC at all levels,” he said. “And such unity needs to happen assoon as possible, not in three to five years or in 10 years of never ifany association continues to choose the option of not merging. Itcan’t be whenever people feel like it, if at all. This has to be donetogether in cooperation with each other.

“My experience going around the country has taught me it ismuch harder promoting bowling as a sport when we still have somany different entities, some serving all adults, others service justwomen and still others serving only youth. Often, these are in thesame community. Such separation only confuses current and poten-tial bowlers, current and potential sponsors, current and future media.Only being unified at all levels truly allows us to move forward inthe direction we need to head to grow the sport of bowling.”

Even USBC Hall of Famer Nelson Burton Jr., in closing the Hallof Fame ceremony before Carroll’s speech, said: “Our job is topreserve the game, not the pinball games or the bar or the arcade butthe game, the ball and the pins.”

USBC Hall of Fame welcomes Vadakin, Marchione The morning’sother major highlight was the USBC Hall of Fame ceremony hostedby Burton. New inductees Gordon Vadakin and Connie Marchionewere joined by 20 past hall of famers to bring the total inductees to213 men and 147 women.

Vadakin, inducted in the non-professional category, was a two-time member of Team USA (1983 and 1989), a two-time USBCOpen Championships titlist and Federation Internationale desQuilleurs American Zone Championship gold medalist.

“I have done nothing. WE have done some pretty cool things,”said Vadakin in acknowledging teammates like fellow USBC Hall ofFamers Mark Jensen and Mark Lewis who helped him to his suc-cess. “Individual success doesn’t mean anything. Team success iseverything.”

The 53-year-old Vadakin, who also is a heralded bowling coachfor Wichita State University and assistant coach for Team USA,was a member of the 1989 American Bowling Congress Champion-ships Tournament (now USBC Open Championships) team cham-pion and 1988 team all-events champion. He also earned six othertop-10 finishes and has held a 206 average for 30 years.

“I had so many great athletes over the years. It’s like (USBCHall of Famer and former Team USA head coach) Fred Borden oncesaid ‘ “When you work with great athletes, you become a hell of acoach.’ “

Inducted for meritorious service, Marchione served in leader-ship positions in the National Deaf Bowling Association and Pacific

Coast Deaf Bowling Association. In 1961 he created the PacificCoast Deaf Masters and in 1988 established the Pacific Coast DeafSenior Masters.

“This is really great. It’s such an honor to be the first deaf personto be inducted here into the USBC Hall of Fame,” said Marchionethrough a sign language interpreter. He asked to share the awardwith previous deaf bowling pioneers such as Thomas Hinchey,Herman Gann and Peter Samolis.

In 1964, Marchione became president of the National Deaf Bowl-ing Association, serving 13 years in that capacity. During his tenureas president, a handicap four-player team, doubles and singles tour-nament and National Deaf Masters were added to the organization’sexisting World Deaf Bowling Championships match play event. “Inever dreamed I’d receive this honor in my lifetime because of theway the rules were I thought it was impossible,” Marchione said. “Iwas stunned and shocked with President Carroll contacted me.”

Theyspelled out the things we need to do such as strike up a relationshipwith the local sports editor so he gets to know you. I had alwaysjust submitted articles and hoped they’d get in. I never thought tothem advanced notice.

This week’s up-date is going to focus on just theoutstanding scores posted thispast Saturday at Fountain Bowl.Even though it was our last ses-sion, we have not yet had ourawards party and some thingswe want to be left as a surprise.

For a couple of weeks, I’veproclaimed the league champi-ons while trying to keep hopealive for all others. I’ve been say-ing - anything can happen – po-sitions two through five canchange and season highs can fall.Well the bowlers finally tookheart to this and put up a greateffort, resulting in some verygood scores.

Mark Curtis led all into the800 club with his excellent per-formance of 202-247-247/881.Now that’s the way to shootMark. Tag-a-longs in to this clubis Eddie Sayles 204-224-242/853, J.D. Pelow 247-209-203/832, and Bryan Osborne 201-208-218-205/832 (in pre-bowl).Very good gentlemen. More highscoring came in from MaxSlevcove 223-222/790, EricMilne 216/765, Kevin Jones265/759, Andy Betancourt 210-211/740, Michael Gaylor 223/724, Kim Ferdnance 221/710,and Michael McDonald 203.

Lastly, I want to give recog-nition and praise to those mem-bers that bowled in the NLACCity Tournament. You all didvery well and made me so proud, not only your performance onthe lanes, but how you con-ducted yourselves. The awardlisting is out and here is howmembers of this group did. Inthe Team Event – Classic(scratch) Div. our put togetherteam of Osborne, Pelow, Saylesand James Hawkins, was namedWatch Out!. These four used thatto take 1st place with a whop-ping 2540, averaging 211 perbowler. Way to go guys.

For SinglesEvent – Div 2 McDonald andMara went places 5th and 6th re-spectively, while in the ScratchDiv. Michael Gaylor took 4th –Eric Milne was 2nd – andHawkins was first with a 3-gameseries of 711.

Girls Jr. All-Starsby David Gordon

LOS ANGELES—The GirlsJr. All-Stars traveled to AMFMidtown Lanes this past Sun-day for their last bowling ses-sion of the season. We want tothank the staff at AMF Mid-town for their hospitality andall of the centers for having usthroughout the year.

Going out with a bang wasour leader for the day, as Lind-say Hannasch stroked up 204-200-255-209/868. Now that’sthe way to end a season. JoiningLindsay in the unique 800 clubwas Melissa Pena with a 221-241/802 showing herself. Noth-ing to sneeze about here. Welldone ladies. Other reportablescame in from Jasmine Morales710 and Tabetha Reynolds 703.

On a side note, the awardwinners for NLAC City Tour-nament were revealed this week-end and the ladies made a verygood showing. It makes me veryproud when I hear from com-peting centers and programs ofhow our members look, behaveand perform. Thank you andnow for big props to these la-dies that capture awards.Doubles Event – Scratch Divi-sion (against guys as well), wehave Hannasch and DeannaCarrillo taking 3rd place. Noth-ing in the Singles Division (theywork better as a group), but anacknowledgement for TeamEvent with our put-togetherteam of Pena, Carrillo, Reynoldsand sub Alyse McGinnes.

Now even though only 1st

place was awarded in the ScratchTeam Event (going to my SEDJr. Travel team), these ladies de-serve big ups for their perfor-mance. I put the ladies up to achallenge to take out that otherteam for the third and final game. And they did just that, earning afree dinner for (let me put it inperspective) beating, thrashing, whipping, pounding, etc., the 1st

place team. And in that singlegame almost caught them to takethe event. So even though noawards, Congratulations for tak-ing 2nd place a mere 15 pins be-hind the leader with a 2525 teamseries.

And lastly in the Girls AllEvents – Scratch Division wewent 1 and 2, now they give out2 places. Reynolds took 2nd

place with an 1807 9-game mix, while Carrillo averaged 214 for a1928 series to capture this title.Again congratulations to all ofyou ladies.

The Girls Jr. All-Stars AwardLuncheon will be held on April14th in the City of Commerce. As such, I am not yet ready tospill the beans on the league andseason award winners. I will fol-low this article up with one tellall in a couple of weeks. Ladiesbe patient and enjoy yourselves. It’s been a very fun and reward-ing year and I’ll talk with yousoon.
