THE HOLY EUCHARIST WITH HEALING Second Sunday after the Epiphany January 20, 2019 10:30am WE WELCOME YOU TO THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER. If you are visiting today, please join us afterwards for fellowship and refreshments downstairs. During the liturgy, we use the two books found in your pew or seat rack: The Book of Common Prayer (1979) and The Hymnal 1982. Generally we stand to sing, but we sit for the offertory and communion hymns. We sit for the readings from scripture, the Old Testament Reading, Psalm and ‘Epistle’ (from the New Testament). We stand for the Gospel reading, and turn to face the Book to elevate Christ’s word and example. We also stand for the Creed. We say together all text set in bold type. Today we sing our new Mass for Third Sunday as the Gloria, Sanctus & Benedictus, and Fraction Anthem. Communion is a spiritual and visual expression of our communal life in Christ. Everyone is welcome to receive communion or a blessing at the Lord’s Table. Every third Sunday of the month we offer healing prayers and laying on of hands the Chapel of St. Luke the Physician. If you wish to have someone pray for you, someone you love, or for the world, make your way to the healing ministers during communion.

Between January 6th and March 6th (Ash Wednesday) are the Sundays in a green Epiphany, but not “ordinary”, season. This year, Epiphany is as long as it can be — 8 Sundays! We supplement

readings from the Gospel of Luke with readings from the Gospel of John. Epiphany emphasizes how Jesus is, as the hymn declares, prophet, priest, and king supreme. From the visit of the Magi to the

Transfiguration on the mountain top, our readings are stories of how Jesus displays his divine calling not only to the Jews, but to the Gentiles as well.

THE EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

Lector A Reading from Paul's First letter to the Church in Corinth.

1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says “Let Jesus be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit.

4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” 5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. 9When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants

who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

THE OFFERTORY

The Celebrant begins the Offertory with a sentence of Scripture. As the alms are collected, and offerings of bread and wine brought forward, the Adult and Youth Choirs sing:

OFFERTORY ANTHEM Tomorrow shall be my dancing day John Gardner (1917-2011)

Tomorrow shall be my dancing day:I would my true love did so chance

to see the legend of my play,to call my true love to my dance:

Sing, O my love, O my love, my love, my love;this have I done for my true love.

Then I was born of a virgin pure,of her I took fleshly substance;thus was I knit to man's nature,to call my true love to my dance:

In a manger laid and wrapped I was,so very poor this was my chance, betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass,to call my true love to my dance:

Then afterwards baptized I was;the Holy Ghost on me did glance,

my Father's voice heard from above,to call my true love to my dance:

SURSUM CORDA—S120 The People remain standing.

Facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS—Mass for Third Sunday Geoffrey Silver

WORDS OF INSTITUTION BCP p. 368 The People stand or kneel.

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil,

Page 16: January 20, 2019 10:30am - Bethesda, Maryland › wp-content › ... · January 20, 2019 10:30am WE WELCOME YOU TO THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER. ... Broadman Press. From One

and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death,We proclaim his resurrection,We await his coming in glory;

EPICLESIS BCP p. 369

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

MUSIC DURING COMMUNION AND HEALING MINISTRY sung by all

Founded in 1940 in a small village in eastern France, Taizé is an ecumenical monastic community whose prayer, three times each day, is at the center of their life together. Today, Taizé is

a place to which visitors of all ages and backgrounds come on pilgrimage, to participate in international meetings of prayer and reflection.

In the Taizé tradition, single verse hymns are sung, in repetition, a dozen or so times over the course of several minutes. During the repetitions, the music (and the singer) are gradually released from the

shackles of the printed page, and the melodies may then be freely adapted, improvised upon or reharmonized, as the Spirit takes us—similar in many respects to the freeing nature of jazz.

You are invited to sing or hum the melodies in any language, or to simply listen and reflect.

It's not too late to join us! Cricket can give you any handouts that you missed and you can get the video at edow.org. We'll see you today for TURN and LEARN.

If you have a topic that is timely, or a speaker that is interesting (maybe you!), please pick a time that would work and let Bob Yates know your availability. The energy around these discussions is incredible and you do not have to have a formal lecture in mind. Most, if not all, of the folks who attend are anxious to discuss difficult topics in a safe environment, so tell us what you think and we will go from there! We are now scheduling March to May and we will end on Memorial Day with a salute!

Youth Nights in 2019Beginning in January we will be moving our youth night to the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. This will avoid a conflict each month with Redeemer's vestry meeting. Cricket and Jeff (St. Dunstan's rector) will be leading this night and will continue our conversations, community building, games, and prayers. This will allow both of them to be present each time we meet.

Please place these evenings on your families calendar and make a commitment to be present each time:

January 23, February 13 & 27, March 13 & 27, April 10 & 24, May 8 & 22

Potomac River Anglican Youth (P.R.A.Y.)Our next PRAY event is TOMORROW Monday, January 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as we will be participating in an interfaith MLK day of service.

Washington Hebrew Congregation hosts an ecumenical service fest on January 21st in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our youth group (Potomac River Anglican Youth) takes part in this annual event. Those who wish to participate should arrive by 9 am at the synagogue on Macomb and Massachusetts Aves. There, we will meet for orientation and prayer before embarking on service projects. There is something for everyone! Last year, volunteers sorted clothes for charity, chopped vegetables, and made casseroles. Others made blankets, colored covers for toy and book packages, or filled food baskets.

This event is planned and organized by Washington Hebrew Congregation.

Sign up in the Parish Hall for the 2019 Men’s Retreat.

Redeemer Book Group—Next SundayThe book we are reading is A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. When in 1922, the thirty-year old Count Rostov is deemed unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, he is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are un-folding outside the hotel's doors. The book will be discussed on January 27 at 3:00pm at the house of Ann Hartman, 107 Hesketh Street, Bethesda, Md. 20815. For questions, contact Huda Kraske at [email protected].

The books we will be reading next are: The Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann and Pale Blue Ink in a Lady's Hand by Franz Werfel.

Coffee HourThere is a sign-up sheet on the board and we invite you to take a Sunday. If the cost of hosting is holding you back, please know that there is money in the budget to help reimburse you. Thank you for helping our ministry of hospitality.

Bethesda Cares - Collecting Warmth

Bethesda Cares is our local support center for homeless adults in our town. We are asking for donations of new or clean, lightly used clothing for both men and women as follows: Hats, gloves, scarves, socks, jackets, sweatshirts, and blankets are always welcome.

A tote beside the piano in the Parish Hall holds donations of clothes. Look for THE GIVING TREE on the stage in the Parish Hall for hats and gloves!

Church volunteers will take them to the Bethes-da Cares center in downtown Bethesda.
