PRESIDENTS CORNER________Bob Niemczewski
Happy New Year to each and everyone and may thiscoming year bring good health to all. I would like to startthis short article by thanking the outgoing Boardmembers that have given so much of their time andworked so hard to make this club run smoothly.President-Bob Hlavacek, V.P. Business-Larry Roper,V.P. Programs-Dawn Hayes, Treasurer-Linda Osgood, and Secretary-Carol Ann Matthews your service isappreciated.
When I was asked to run for the position of PresidentI agreed and after the elections I starting thinking whatdid I get myself into. So I was thought when in doubtread the directions. So I obtained a copy of the SSDSby-laws and looked up the purpose of our club. In onesentence it states our purpose is to play thehammered dulcimer together with other instrumentsfor our enjoyment, promoting and encouragingknowledge of the hammered dulcimer throughmeetings, workshops, performances, newsletters, and other activities agreed upon by themembership.
So now, after reading the directions, I feel my job issimple. All I have to do is remember this is a greathammered dulcimer music club, we are supposed toenjoy ourselves, promote the hammered dulcimer, andwhatever the Board does will be for the best interest ofour membership and by our membership. Having saidthis, I want you all to remember this is your music club, and I as your president want you to enjoy being amember of the Silver Strings Dulcimer Society.

By the time you read this we will have made itthrough the holidays and are raring to get started on thisnew year of 2012.
I myself am looking forward to my new position as VPBusiness with great anticipation. I know full well that itinvolves a lot of time and work but I also know I'm apeople person and will enjoy the interaction that goeswith it.
With all new administrations there will be anadjustment period for members as well as the board but,I'm confident time will take care of that.
I will have more information as time goes onregarding Playdates, new music, playlists and anythingof importance for the membership to know. TheNewsletter is one of the very best ways of keeping upwith all of our club activities.
I would like to thank the former board members for allthey have done in the preceding years. I will do my bestto represent SSDS as the talented, fun loving club it is!!I'll close for now, and look forward to seeing many ofyou at our first "official" meeting in 2012 on Jan 5th.

The Christmas season isover. The marathonplaydates are history. Weat last had a chance tobreathe deep and enjoyour grand kids, visitingfrom Missouri during theChristmas holidays.
Thank you all, who supported all the club activities, playdates, jams, and variety nights. I think ‘Strings’ putits best foot forward in the things we got involved with. Ithink our music picked up a notch. We attracted newmembers and made new on-line friends. We may have2 or 3 new people to mentor after the start of the NewYear. I was asked by a few people, at playdates, howthey could get started. I invited them to our Januarymeetings to meet us, look at dulcimers, and askquestions. If you see new visitors, please welcome themand let me know. I would like to set up a mentorprogram for them.
Happy New Year . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Bob Hlavacek

It has come to my attentionthat there was someconcern in the membershipabout a $200 donation to
Good Hope Church for the food bank in December. Theexpenditure was not brought before the membershipbecause we did not have any more membershipmeetings in December. Our last board meeting of theyear was on November 3
rd. Later in November, we
realized that we had not acted on the semi-annualdonation that we give to Good Hope for the use of themeeting hall. Larry Roper proposed that we give a yearend donation to Good Hope’s food bank, like we did lastyear (approved by the membership). The boardmembers all approved the contributions via an emailvote. We had no more meetings in December to discussit with the membership, and thought it would be better togive the money to Good Hope as a donation rather thanthe IRS in the form of Taxes. We hope you agree andapprove. Past President, Bob Hlavacek
TamlinTam Lin is an ancient Scots ballad which also appearsin Scandinavia. The tale of "Tam Line" is mentioned inVederburns Complaint of Scotland (1549) and an air bythe name of "Young Thomlin" appears between 1600and 1620. A ballet of "Thomalyn"was licensed in 1558.There are many variations on the name "Tam Lin" Inaddition to those above he is known as Tom Line, TomLinn, Tamlin, Tomaline Tam-line and Tam Lane. Theseword are by Burns circa 1792.
O I forbid you, maidens a'That wear gowd on your hairTo come or gae by CarterhaughFor young Tam-lin is there.
There's nane that gaes by CarterhaughBut they leave him a wad;Either their rings or green mantlesOr else their maidenhead.
Janet has kilted her green kirtle,A little aboon her knee; And she's broded up her yellow hairA little aboon her bree; And she's awa' to CarterhaughAs fast as she can hie.
When she cam to CarterhaughTam-lin was at the wellAnd there she fand his steed standingBut away was himsel.
She had na' pu'd a double roseA rose but only tway,Till up then started young Tam-a-lin,Says, Lady, thou's pu' nae mae.
Something to do on a cold frosty night

Concerts
2011
John F Kennedy and CarolineKennedy Libraries in DearbornHeights each hosted an SSDSconcert.
We played for a nearlyfull house at the RoyalOak Library. We try toeducate people about theinstruments and music,as well as entertain them.
Our final concert of theseason was for ourfrequent friends at thePine Ridge of Hayesassisted living facility inSterling Heights. This“music ministry” was afitting end to a string of 20holiday performances.
SSDS performed on stage at the historic Redford Theater, before the showing of the movie, “It’s aWonderful Life”. The ambiance of the theater and the film itself, were a step back in time for thosewho remember ‘black & white’ in movies and TV. The Redford Theater has one of only 4 operating, original theater organs left in the Metropolitan Detroit area. There were once over 65 of them. It wasa real treat to hear it played in all of its glory.
We especially enjoy“show & tell” with the
children after a concert
The Ladies’ Christmas Tea at St. John’s Lutheran Church in NewBoston was an honor and a treat for us. We were given a surprisewelcome at their elegant tables for tea, punch and desserts beforewe performed. By the time we were ready to play, we felt like ‘partof the family’. The evening ended with everyone singing “SilentNight” by candlelight. We never know when something reallyspecial will happen. That is the JOY in this musical experience. PEACE
