And one thing that has encouraged mein the debate over women bishops isthat all parties have been willing to stickwith a long process of dialogue, despitethe disagreements, rather than walkaway from each other. If there is anyencouragement to be found in this verypublic disagreement, it is perhaps not togive up on each other too easily but tokeep trying to find ways to maintainrelationships and work with those whoare different from us or hold verydifferent opinions. There is a chance – I hope in this case asmall one that, in the end, it will notprove possible to find a way ahead thatall can support, but it will not have beenwithout trying. And important as unity is,it sits alongside other virtues of justiceand equality. For many, justice and equality are whatthe issue of women bishops is primarilyabout and for the majority of people, including those on General Synod, itseems indefensible that men andwomen should be treated differently. Myhope is that the situation will be resolvedsooner rather than later and so we shallsee what 2013 holds.I hope that for you 2013 holds joy andpeace and that in all spheres of life wemay see greater unity, justice andequality. With my love and prayers in 2013,Jane.

From the Vicarage......Much has already been written about thevote in last year’s General Synodconcerning the consecration of womenbishops. Since so many people havestopped me to offer personal words ofencouragement, I thought I would offermy own reflections.Firstly I would want to say that as afemale priest in the Church of England Ihave only experienced positive supportand affirmation. I have not encounterednegative reactions because of my genderbut only occasional surprise when peoplediscover what I do.Secondly, the General Synod hasalready agreed that there will be femalebishops and the vast majority of theChurch of England is in favour of womenbecoming bishops. The latest vote wasabout how and when this will happen. However, the ‘how’ and ‘when’ is whatthe fuss is about and the majority ofpeople in and out of the church cannotunderstand what the problem is. Theproblem is how to practicallyaccommodate differing perspectives sopeople do not feel their sincerely andstrongly held views are whollycompromised.A great theme of the New Testament isunity. The church is called to be united. When ‘church’ works well I believe one ofits strengths is the way people are willingto work at difference. In many spheres oflife we see relationships break down veryquickly when there is disagreement. Oneof the things Archbishop Rowan Williamshas accomplished in his time asArchbishop of Canterbury has beenholding the Anglican community in unityby encouraging and facilitating dialogueover issues on which people are divided.

To all in the community,The staff and children wish you all avery Happy New Year. In the termleading up to Christmas, the children atBathford School spent time reflectingon the meaning of our new schoolmotto, “Grow, care, serve, share”. Weare proud to share the motto with St.Swithun’s Church and the childrenhave also invented actions that matchthe words. In class discussions (whichwe call Class Council), children cameup with the following definitions.Grow: Every day we grow a little bitbigger in school. We start very young inReception and by the time we are inYear 6, we will have grown taller, butalso we will have grown inside ourhearts. School helps us to grow to bethe best young people that we can be.Care: At Bathford School, we careabout all the people around us; thechildren and the adults. We also carefor other living creatures and we carefor our environment. We always keepour school tidy and clean.Serve: We serve each other by doingthings to help other people. We mightraise money for charity, hold a dooropen for someone or ask someone toplay at playtime. We think about thefeelings of others and look after eachother.

Share: We look after our belongings. We share with other children becauseit’s the kind thing to do. We share ourtime with each other and we alwaysremember to say please and thankyou. We have also been thinking abouthow we act towards others. A helpfulquote from the Bible that weremember is, “We treat others as wewould like to be treated”.We wish you a wonderful year ahead, full of kindness, happiness. From the Staff and Children atBathford Primary School

The Bathford Players present :Robin Hood & The Babes In TheWood A Traditional Pantomimefor ALL the familyAfter the huge success of last year'spanto, Jack & The Beanstalk by JanTatem, the Bathford Players return withanother hilarious outing to panto land.Join Robin Hood, some VERY merrymen, the Maid Marion and not forgettingNurse Nellie of Norton as they battle toprotect the Babes from the evil clutchesof the Sheriff of Nottingham. IntroduceIdle Jack, the local dimwit, and twohapless witches to the mix, and theRhyming Green Fairy of the Woods, and you have a recipe for completechaos and comedy galore.Adapted by Luke John Emmett, who codirects with Lisa Croker, this is a showwith something for everyone. Expectquick wit, slapstick, singing, dancingand quite frankly utter stupidity in thisfabulous little panto.Luke says, “This is a truly traditionalpantomime which involves manytalented members of the community inBathford as well as some new faceswe've picked up along the way.Rehearsals are going incredibly welland this show really is going to be veryfunny. I'm a big believer that communitypantomimes should be just that, something which champions andcelebrates the amazing talent thatresides in local communities. We arevery lucky in Bathford to have anfabulous pool of talent to pick from, andnot just on the stage either. Our sceneryis always a massive highlight of ourshows and we have a very talentedartist, Gillian Smith who has beenworking with George Weeks to createsomething that is going to be incrediblyspecial.”

As another part of involving thecommunity, children from BathfordPrimary School will be getting involvedby creating posters for the production. The best will win tickets to come andsee the show as well as having thedesigns proudly displayed around thevillage.Luke comments, “Bathford PrimarySchool is always very supportive of usand I feel it's important to create closelinks with young people and get theminterested in drama at a young age.For many, a pantomime is the firsttheatrical experience they will have andwe owe it to the next generation oftheatre makers to help inspire theseyoung people and get them interestedin the performing arts. Each year asmall group of actors dons costumesand goes into the school and performsto the children, which helps inspirethem and makes them want to beinvolved with our productions.”
