RV CompoundBy Jim Snyder

In our December walk through we found a number of unitsthat have been in there for a long time, with wheels in thesand and tires that are deteriorating. All units should bechecked monthly and wheels and tires put on wood to keepthem from sinking into the sand.

We are still having units parked in the wrong sites or parkedwith the site number in the center of the unit. Check to see ifyou are parked with the site number in the center of the unit.Check to see if your parked correctly. We also need to watchthe covers on boats to keep water out. Keep your registrationup to date along with a phone number, so you can be contact-ed if need arises. PLEASE REPORT ANY CHANGES TOTHE OFFICE SO OUR MONTHLY LIST IS UP TO DATE.

We will be enforcing our six-month rule about moving unitsand then make sure you can take them on the road. Also, make sure the yellow registration sticker is on the plate. If youneed help parking, check your sheet, issued by the office onhow to park correctly.

Any other problems contact me at 596-1804 and help will beavailable. Let us keep the compound clean and units in goodshape.

I hope all had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

JUST A FEW BRIEF COMMENTS:

The budget for 2013 was approved with 139 votes in favor and 88no votes. A budget of about 1.3 million dollars and only about 8%of the residents cast a ballot!Running for the Board of Directors? Your resume must beturned into the Administrative office by January 14, 2013.Nominees will be announced at the January 16 meeting. “Meetthe Candidates” will occur on February 20, 2013 following theregular Board Meeting.

BE CAREFUL!:

Do not let strangers into your home! If you do not know who isat the door, do not let them in! If they do not leave, call theSheriff’s Department .

ANONYMOUS LETTERS:

If you are an author of anonymous letters, just what is it youwant us to do? We have no information as to who we contact. How can we help solve a problem when we have NO CLEAR IDEAOF WHAT THE PROBLEM IS? Often the letter is a complaintabout a neighbor. Who is the neighbor? If you do not want to talk to anybody at the office, call your UnitRepresentative. We also have Complaint forms that protect iden-tity. There are options. Anonymous letters do no good!

COMPLAINTS:

Thus far in 2012, 458 complaints have been logged. The A/VRChas heard 118 of them. We have some very busy people who con-tribute their time to make Brookridge a better place to live.

When you look at a fork on the table, you can easily pick it upby instinctively judging the distance with your two eyes(binocular vision). You can judge distance because your eyesare about 3”-4” apart. Your brain uses the slightly differentangles each eye sees to understand how far the fork is fromyour hand. This is called depth perception and it works forthings that are nearby.

Depth Perception Allows You to Judge Distance

The farther away something is from your eyes, the smallerthe angle is between them. Eventually things get so far awaythey appear to be at the same angle and you cannot judgehow far away things are. But if somehow your eyes were fur-ther apart, say 36”-48”you could judge the distance of verydistant things better.

Page 34: January 2013 News & Views

Brookridge • January, 2013 Page 35Astronomers use this concept of increased distance to figureout how far stars are from the earth. Since stars are very faraway, the two telescopes must be very far apart. They use atrick to make the angle as big as it can be: they wait exactlysix months and take two angular measurements.

Astronomers Wait Six Months and Make TwoMeasurementsNow the distance between the two telescopes is 186,000,000miles apart and the angle is as big as it can be. This worksfor nearby stars, but for really distant stars, their angle stillappears to be about the same.So how do astronomers estimate these vast distances?Come to our next club meeting and find out.

I want to thank all the individuals that came out and helpedus put up the Christmas lights for the holidays. Also, I thankall of you that helped take them down for next season.Without our volunteers this community would be paying a lotmore in assessments. That is why you should volunteer forsomething, If possible to help the community, whether it beone hour or as much time as you can spare. For years ourCommunity of Brookridge had been run and thrived with thehelp of the volunteers. Please think about giving a little timeback to our community. Those that do enjoy helping, and ithas made a great difference. Again, I say thank you.

There was several things presented to the Board of Directorsfrom the Beautification Committee. I do hope they will thinkabout what was discussed and take some action. We are asmall committee trying to do a big job and we too need help.

Volunteers needed to help take down Christmas lights onJanuary 4th and 5th also if needed the 11th and the 12th. Anyhelp will be appreciated.

Hello, there! Since you are reading this, we have survivedthe Mayan “end of the world prediction”. Life goes on; so myadvice: Carpe Diem!

Our dear friend Bobbie Krueger did a Humpty Dumpty rou-tine and fractured her leg. At this writing we are sure she iswell on the mend. As you know, the Woman’s Club had setaside monies for kitchen supplies. We now have enoughdishes and flatware to accommodate 300 people, if needed. We also purchased a 40-cup coffee urn for small functions, this should cut down on coffee waste.

In a joint venture with Friday Night Bingo we have acquiredan almost new Bingo machine from the Elks, our machine is18 years old and it is quite likely we would not be able to findreplacement parts if it broke down. A new machine costsaround $10,000.

The Big Band concert with Frankie D. held on November 11was a resounding success. About 200 people attended andeveryone had a great time. Best of all, the woman’s clubadded several hundred dollars to our coffers. Thank you toall the women who put this together.
