Even harder to believe is that it is already 2014, and a new Ma- sonic year has begun. This is the perfect opportunity to ex- tend my heartfelt thanks to all the Broth- ers and their Ladies that came out in support of the new Lodge Officers at the Installation on December 15 th . It meant a great deal to all of us to see the Ballroom so full that day. To the Installing Officers - Brothers Jim Hensley, Keith Brooks, and Mark Graybeal - the Officers of Twin Falls Lodge would like to say Thank You for taking the time out of your busy day and serving as an Installing Officer for this special day for this lodge. The new Lodge Officers would also like to say Thank You to the Ballroom Kitchen staff for wonderful refreshments after the installation. On December 22nd, Twin Falls Commandery Knights Tem- plar held their annual Christmas Observance at the Ballroom. This is starting to become a very big event for the Com- mandery. In 2012 it was attended by 60 Brothers and guests, while this year nearly 80 Brethren and guest were in atten- dance. If you are looking for more light in Freemasonry, maybe the York Rite is your answer. Brother Jeremy Vaughn is the recorder for all three bodies of the York Rite and you may contact him at the email address and phone number listed in this Trestleboard, for more information or a petition to join. Our next Stated Meeting will be on January 8 th , 2014! Din- ner will start promptly at 6:00 pm. Reservations are requested and can be made by contacting the Junior Warden via the email address or phone number listed for him in the Trestle- board. This year we thought we would try something new dur- ing the dinner hour by providing short presentations on Ma- sonic Education. These presentations are geared towards our Ladies and/or Families. Our thinking behind this is it will pro- vide some understanding as to why we love this Brotherhood so much and help make them feel a little more part of it. The Lodge Meeting will follow dinner at 7:30 pm. Please, come out and support your new Lodge Officers. Should you need a ride, please call any one of the Lodge Officers. They will be more than happy to provide transportation. On January 11 at 6:00pm will be the Annual Navy Bean din- ner. The LLC and the Ballroom will be putting this event this year. This should be great time for all and it is open to the pub- lic, so bring your family and friends and come out for fun eve- ning. The new Twin Falls Lodge Room is under construction and making great headway. We are hopeful that the work will be done by early spring please keep your fingers crossed. We will keep you updated as to the progress in future issues of the Trestleboard. Brothers Randy and Jim are hard at work on this. In closing, my brothers, I will leave you with this poem. ON THE SQUARE My Brother, in the Courtyard

Each one of us have stood

Outside the tyled Temple door

Awaiting as we should.

Take heed, thou young Apprentices

The Word emblazoned there:

To meet upon the level

And part upon the square.

My Brother, at the Altar

Each one of us has knelt

With solemn Oath and Brotherhood

The Mystic Tie we've felt.

Take heed, my Brother Fellowcraft

The Word emblazoned there:

To act upon the plumb

And part upon the Square.

My Brother, in the Temple

Each one of us were Raised

And on receiving further light

Into the Light we gazed.

Take heed, my Brothers, Masters all

The Word emblazoned there:

To Live within the compass

And part upon the Square.

As the Sun in the West…

Greetings from the West, Brethren I hope you all had a great Christmas and welcomed in the New Year safely. It is always a great time of year to spend with family and friends over the holidays. I would like to take a moment and thank everyone that helped to make our 1st installation in our new building a great success. We had a great turnout of guests and a great representation of Freema-

sonry to the public. As the month of January is now upon us, let us not forget about the Navy Bean & Ham Dinner on Janu-ary 11th at 6:00 PM. Let’s have a great turnout for this awe-some event.

The Character of a Mason (from the farmer’s Almanac 1823)

The real freemason is distinguished from the rest of mankind

by the uniform unrestrained rectitude of his conduct. Other men are honest in the fear of punishment which the law might inflict; they are religious in expectation of being rewarded, or in dread of the devil, in the next world. A freemason would be just if there were no laws, human or divine except those written in his heart by the finger of his creator. In every climate, under every system of religion, he is the same. He kneels before the univer-sal throne of God in gratitude for the blessings he has received and the humble solicitation for his future protection. He vener-ates the good men of all religions. He disturbs not the religion of others. He restrains his passions, because they cannot be indulged without injuring his neighbor or himself. He gives no offense, because he does not choose to be offended. He contracts no debts which he is certain he can-not discharge, because he is honest upon principle. Fraternally,

Bob Nelson Jr.,

BUILDING REMODEL UPDATE

JANUARY 2014 — CONSTRUCTION REPORT As of December 27 the new lodge room is 95% framed. We discovered major rot damage in about ½ of the floor and that has been repaired. Rough wiring has been completed in the new bar off the Shoshone room and we are about ready for rough wiring in the all other rooms. The mezzanine above the ladies dressing room and the storage room off the lodge has been floored (complete with a stairway). Some of the plumb-

ing and electrical panels have been rerouted. I am hopeful that by the end of January that the entire project will be sheet rocked and that the new manager office and the bar, ladies dressing room and the storage area will be completed. We have had several meeting of the past month to discuss the interior design of the lodge and the exterior finish. These two latter items are truly still in the discussion stage and it is the clear consensus of those working on the project that we truly “want to get it right” the first time. York Rite News

Greetings Brothers and Friends! The Companions and Sir

Knights of the Twin Falls York Rite Bodies hope that eve-ryone had a wonderful holiday season and wish everyone a

joyous and prosperous new year!

December was a very busy month for our groups. On De-

cember 22nd, over seventy people gathered at in the ball-

room for Twin Falls Commandery’s Annual Christmas Observance. This event has grown over the past several

years, and more than one person mentioned it is a high-

light of their Christmas season. In addition to the usual

toasts, we were treated with a lesson from Rev. William Pyron and joined in celebrating Christmas with music. A

special thanks to the Sir Knights from Boise who helped

us with our event, to the Job’s Daughters of Bethels 18, 43 and 56 for the closing cross, and to our many friends and

family who joined us for the day.

December also brought installations of our new officers. King Solomon Chapter’s new High Priest is Matthew

White, King is George White, Jr., and Scribe is Richard L.

Rowe. Twin Falls Council’s new Illustrious Master is Mi-chael Keas, Deputy Master is James Hensley, and Princi-

pal Conductor of the Work is Jack Beck, Jr. Twin Falls

Commandery’s new Commander is George White, Jr., Generalissimo is Michael Keas, and Captain General is

Michael Keas. Jeremy Vaughn was retained as Secretary/Recorder/Treasurer of all three. Please congratulate our

new officers when you see them!

In December, we also welcomed eleven new companions to King Solomon Chapter. The companions of Rupert

Chapter #22 in Burley elected to merge into King Solo-

mon. We welcome them to the family, and are excited to work together for our future in the York Rite. We also

hope to begin the New Year with some degree work for a

couple of candidates in the Council at our January stated meeting for even more fun.

Remember, we meet on the Fourth Monday of the Month

at 7:30 p.m. (January 27th). If you need a ride, or would like more information (or a petition!), please contact Jer-

emy Vaughn at [email protected] or 208-339-6849.

We are always looking for more members to

share in our fun!

Fraternally,

Jeremy Vaughn

NEWS FROM

TWIN FALLS CHAPTER #29, OES

Members of Twin Falls Chapter #29 kept

very busy during December. An initiation

was held for three “young” candidates at the

first stated meeting. Several members at-

tended the Installation of the 2014 Officers of

Twin Falls Lodge #45. The York Rite Christ-

mas Observance also found several members

on the side lines. Much time was donated by

our members to assist at the Job’s Daughters

(Bethel #43) Gift Wrap Booth in the mall.

January has arrived very quickly. Our

first meeting of the New Year is on January

14th; those with January birthdays will be

recognized. The second meeting of the month

is on the 28th when Past Matrons and Past

Patrons will be honored. It would be great to

fill the side line chairs with many of these

honored guests.

Twin Falls Chapter #29 sends congratula-

tions to the new officers of Twin Falls Lodge

#45 and Job’s Daughters Bethel #43. Several

members also attended this Bethel’s installa-

tion on January 4th.

Thanks to all who have purchased a com-

memorative brick from the former Masonic

Center. We are also appreciative of those

who have made a donation toward our Chap-

ter projects—Benevolent Fund, Grand Chap-

ter Scholarship Fund, ESTARL Fund, and

our local Chapter Scholarship Fund. Bricks

are available for $15.00. Please contact Vic

January News from Job’s Daughters Bethel 56

Happy New Year!! From the Daughters and adults of Bethel 56. Our new year is off with a “bang” as we are gearing up to have our Grand Guardian visit on January 19 at 2:00 p.m. We would like to invite any and all of our Masonic family to join us for this spe-cial visit, as it is also our Honored Queen Taylors’ last meeting. We will also be “STRIKING” up a bowl-ing party with our friends of Snake River DeMolay, which will be fun for all!

As always, if you have a daughter, granddaughter, niece or other relative who is between the ages of 10 and 20, please introduce her to Job’s Daughters or give me her contact information so that we can. Our

organization is a unique way to develop leadership, citizenship, and friendship in young ladies.

Adults with proper Masonic relationship are al-ways welcome at our meetings and activities. To see more of what we’re doing, visit our website at http://bethel56.webs.com. Jobie love from Bethel 56!!! Amy Collins Bethel 56 Guardian Phone: 421-2017 Emails: [email protected]

THE BOWERS FOUNDTION

Many years ago Marty Bowers, a very successful man and Mason, passed away. At the time of his death he cre-ated a Trust to help benefit Masons or families of Masons. Over the years this has been administrated as a Trust

but about five years ago it was turned into a Foundation. This Foundation is administrated by Brothers in this

Lodge. We have several ways we can help members or families within our Masonic Family. In compliance with Brother Bowers wishes we have several areas that need to be addressed in a certain order as follows:

1. Needy widows and orphans of Masons who were current members of Twin Falls Lodge No. 45,

AF&AM at their death;

2. Needy Masons who are current members of Twin Falls Lodge No. 45;

3. Needy families of Masons who are, or were at their death, current members of Twin Falls Lodge

No. 45;

4. Children or grandchildren of Masons who are, or were at their death, current members of Twin

Falls Lodge No. 45, members of Job’s Daughter Bethel’s No. 43 and 56, and Twin Falls DeMolay

Chapter members, who are in need of financial assistance to pursue education at an accredited in-

stitution following graduation from high school; 5. Any needy organization either local or National that is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

As a Foundation, we are required to distribute at least 5% of the balance every year. Last year we only had two

students apply for scholarships. If you are interested in applying please contact the Lodge Secretary for an appli-

cation.

FROM THE JUNIOR WARDEN’S

ARCHIVES

My Brothers, last month we started a great

journey with the installation of officers for the 2014

Masonic Year. I hope all had a great holiday this

year with family and friends.

WHO DISOCOVERED, DESIGNED OR IN-

VENTED MASONRY?

No one man, any more than any one man

discovered, designed or invented democracy, or phi-

losophy, or science, or any one government. Free-

masonry is the result of growth. Many Masons had

a part in it; it has taken to itself teachings from

many religions, philosophies, systems of knowl-

edge, symbols. The most generally accepted ortho-

dox belief as to those who “began” freemasonry is

that the raft is a descendant of Operative Masons.

These Operatives inherited from unknown begin-

nings, of which there may have been

several and were probably many, prac-

tices and some from ritual. Speculative

Masonry, touches hands with those

who followed unknown religions I

which, however, many of the Specula-

by the use of symbols as old as man-

kind and therefore universal, and not

the product of any people or time.

Further light in freemasonry

Dear Brother Hiram: What are some good sources for doing quality Masonic education

and study? Where do I even begin?

So, you’ve decided you want to actually study some quality materials on Freemasonry? Good for you! As Albert

Mackey said: “I suppose there are more Masons who are ignorant of all the principles of freemasonry than there are men of

any other class who are chargeable with the like ignorance of their own profession.” I commend you on wanting to be one

of those who knows something of his profession! The danger, however, is that there is a huge volume of sheer rubbish out there, and some of it is very well written, very

convincing, and very easy to find. Conversely, some of the best and most accurate Masonic information out there is occa-

sionally dry and can be very hard to find. For the new(er) student of Masonry, it can be very difficult to start down the right

paths without getting sucked in by the snake-oil salesmen.

Although admittedly the internet has made finding information and books a lot easier, it has also increased the availabil-

ity of the rubbish resources. And frankly, a few of the worst websites (in terms of accurate information) are some of the best

looking. However, this is not a new problem. “Historians of Masonry, complained New York governor DeWitt Clinton in

1825, too often engage in ‘gratuitous assumptions and fanciful speculations.’ ‘The absurd accounts of its origin and history,

in most of the books that treat of it, have proceeded from enthusiasm operating on credulity and the love of the marvelous.’”

A quick search of some of the major Masonic libraries, such as the one at the House of the Temple in Washington, D.C.,

the headquarters of the Southern Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite, reveals the sheer volume of books available on Freema-

sonry. Since “going public” in 1717, thousands of publications have been printed on Freemasonry. It’s easy to be intimi-dated as a new(er) student of Masonic study to know where to begin. And if you ask ten different Masons for recommenda-

tions, you will get ten different lists. With that in mind, here are a few recommended sources to start with, grouped by cate-

gory:

General Masonic Information/Overview

The Complete Idiots Guide to Freemasonry by S. Brent Morris; Freemasonry For Dummies by Chris Hodapp. Don’t

let the names fool you; these are quality introductory books to the fraternity and its basics, including a lot of the related

groups and symbols.

The Grand Lodge of British Columbia and Yukon’s website at http://freemasonry.bcy.ca/grandlodge.html is one of the

best on the internet. Spend some quality time here exploring their links; their online museum and library of articles is su-

perb.

The Masonic Society – both a great group to join, but also a good magazine, too, and an on-line forum. http://

www.themasonicsociety.com/.

Paul M. Bessel’s Website: http://bessel.org/masonic_info.htm. Not flashy, but informative.

Almost anything from the Masonic Service Association of North America, particularly the Short Talk Bulletins. http://

www.msana.com.

Freemasonry’s Involvement in American History

American Freemasons by Mark A. Tabbert.

Quality, Evidence-Based History of Freemasonry

The Origins of Freemasonry: Scotland’s Century by David Stevenson

Quality Responses to Anti-Masonic Critics (because its helpful to have, and because it can help you to filter the rubbish

from the treasure)

Is It True What They Say About Freemasonry by S. Brent Morris and Arturo De Hoyos

Workman Unashamed by Christopher Haffner (an Anglican Minister)

A Pilgrim’s Path by John J. Robinson (the book he wrote which inspired him to become a Freemason)

To Be A Better Lodge Officer (Or To Learn What They Do) Our Stations and Places (Revised Edition) by Henry Meacham and Michael Poll

Robert’s Rules of Order, Masonic Edition by Michael Poll

Certainly, this topic could fill pages for months. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of good books out there on various

aspects of Masonry. The same is true of websites. This list, however, will give you a good place to start.

FROM

THE SECRETARY’S

DESK

Let me start by wishing all of you a very Happy & Prosper-ous New Year. We started our

New Masonic Year with an outstanding Installation of Offi-cers on Sunday, December 15th, the first in The Historic Ballroom, our new home. We had a large crowd with many family, friends, and out of town Brothers in atten-dance. A special treat was observing the Closing Cross by Bethels 43, 56 and 18, a very moving presentation, and I think a first in Twin Falls Lodge history. The next thing I need to let you know is that in the next few weeks our Brother Treasurer and I will be writing a BIG CHECK to the Grand Lodge of Idaho for our Annual Assessment (Per Capita). This is the largest single ex-pense every Lodge has each and every year. The funds for this expense come from the payment of every mem-bers contribution for their annual dues. If you haven’t had the time with the busy holidays to write your check for your 2014 dues please take a minute to do just that in the next day or so. Remember your dues are due and pay-able by December 31st of the previous year. I’d like to let you know the particulars of the Lodge Sec-retary’s Office. The Lodge Office is open from Noon to

4:00 p.m. every Wednesday. The Office is currently lo-cated in the Old Adder Building on the North corner of The Historic Ballroom property. Stop by if you are in the area on Wednesday afternoon. This is the only time I am sure to be there to check the voice mailbox. If you would like to talk with me at ANY other time, day or night, call my cell phone at (208) 420-5801. Otherwise I could be a week before I answer any voice messages on the Lodge phone number. Please address any e-mail to me at [email protected] and I will answer you as soon as possible. Finally, the Lodge Elected Officers along with the Lead-ership team of the Historic Ballroom are working together to establish policies and procedures for use of the facili-ties at the Ballroom. However, the Lodge Secretary does NOT schedule events for the use of any space in the building except the Lodge Office area. Please allow me to thank each and everyone of you for the support and encouragement you have given me dur-ing this time of transition from one Secretary to the next. THANK YOU!! Fraternally, Jack W. Beck, Jr., PM — Secretary
