Fleischmanns First January 3rd Meeting Notes

President Yvonne Reuter called the meeting to or-

der at 9:30 with a special thank you to Anita Rubin and Marilyn Ringel for their successful efforts in recruiting new and renewing past members . Fleischmanns First membership, those contributing a donation of $10 or more, is now 116.

Maple Festival Michelle Sidrane announced the selection of March 22nd weekend for this years Maple Fest which will be held at La Cabana. At a Committee meeting later in the day, it was decided to hold all Maple Fest activities on Saturday, March 22nd beginning the day with the Maple Breakfast at Fleischmanns Community Church, the Maple Bake Off Caf in the early afternoon and the crowning of the Maple Court in the late afternoon.

Memorial Day Yvonne looking to bring in more vendors. Suggestions given were announcing the event on Facebook Calling in person using Art Times paper as a resource.

Pool Michelle reported that Village board at the December meeting has given approval to Fleisch-manns First to plan, implement and fundraise for a new pool as well as explore opening the current pool for 2015.

Peg Ellsworth gave updates on the following: Theater Contract in place to repair roof

and faade. New Smart Growth Funds are available for

Main St. and New Home Ownership grants.

Christmas decoration Community Compe-tition suggested by Peg to get more atten-tion for all villages. The Roxbury competi-tion got tremendous write up in CMN.

Forums April suggested for next Forum; Yvonne will get in touch with Ann Jackowitz who is head-ing that committee.

Positive comments made on how nice the Village sign looks with new snowflakes and garland put up by Rob Alverson.

***CELEBRATING ONE HUNDRED YEARS***

A Village Pool is a Village Asset; Planning a New Fleischmanns Pool for 2016! As you make the right turn from Route 28 onto Main Street, visitors to our Village pass a sign of welcome on both the left and the right. The sign on the right lists the highlights or as-sets of our Village. Included in that list and at the top, is the Municipal Pool. Last summer due to budget constraints, the Municipal pool was closed. "Open the pool" was the cry from many community mem-bers when the pool closing was announced last spring. In response to the outcry Fleischmanns First, in June 2014, for-mally asked the Village to acknowledge the pool as an asset and establish a Committee to research both repair, if possi-

ble, of the existing pool and research the costs and feasibility for a new pool. Recently Fleischmanns First presented a pro-posal to the Village

board and the Mayor asking that they assign Fleischmanns First the task of researching, planning and building a new pool and developing and implementing a fundraising strategy to accomplish this task. This is a long term project; we anticipate applying for fund-ing available for 2016. In the meantime, Fleischmanns First hopes to open the existing pool this summer with a reduced financial burden and has allocated existing funds to explore how to make the pool usable for summer 2015. Some will say that we have a new state of the art recreation center in Arkville so why put our efforts into the Fleisch-manns Village pool? We believe that there are many swim-mers that want to take advantage of the sun and summer weather and swim in an outdoor pool. Furthermore, we hope to incorporate a toddler pool and activity area that will be suitable to families as well as lap swimmers. Fleischmanns needs to hold on to its assets if we are to attract new busi-nesses, homeowners and visitors. We will report over the coming months on our progress and look forward to your feedback and support.

Making a Living in Fleischmanns...

For 2015, the Fleischmanns Flyer history piece will focus on the many ways over the years peo-ple have made a living here. Not always easy, but we'll see many ways folks found over the years.

In the years before refrigeration, ice harvesting was big business. In the depths of winter, ice would be taken from frozen ponds and lakes, and stored in ice houses. Many of you may still have a small shed on your property--if there are remnants of sawdust, and you can't figure out what the building was used for, there is a good chance it was used for storage of the harvested ice. The ice kept surprisingly long, so that ho-tels and homes could rely on it to keep dairy products and other produce cool well into the summer. It was also important in the shipping of Catskills region milk to New York City. The ice industry flourished for many years, until the coming of mechanical refrigeration.

News from Skene Library

In December, Skene sent out its annual fund-raising appeal, to which many have already responded. We thank you for your gener-osity.

Sadly, in this era of extremely tight municipal budgets and escalat-ing costs, we rely more and more on our donors. While Skene re-ceives funding from Margaretville Central School, The Town of Middletown, and some State funding, as well as the major support we receive from the Village of Fleischmanns (for a tiny village, the level of support for the library is terrific). A large part of the budget relies on donations.

If you have not already done so, please consider making a donation to Skene. Your donation will help support our service to the com-munity, by increasing our book-buying budget, helping with the purchase of new DVDs, by helping to defray heating costs and providing the means to keep the Library open and accessible to our community.

Volunteering

We all make New Years resolutions, some are achievable and some are not. Here are some reasons why you should consider volunteering.

It makes a difference! It is meaningful! It is needed! Youll meet new people! It is easy to do and you can make the time! It is rewarding! It produces results! It feels good!

To all of you who volunteer your time whether it is with Fleischmanns First, attending meetings, help in planning events, work those events, attend those events, decorate the Village, work on the Fleischmanns Flyer or volunteer for the Fleischmanns Holiday Party or at Fleischmanns Community Church, or work on behalf of the Village as an elected offi-cial or sit on the planning board or any other Village committee, we thank you and applaud you! Make 2015 a year of successful volunteerism!

Greetings Fleischmanns Community!

Winter weather is upon us and the Village looks so quaint every time we get a blanket-ing of snow. In one sense things go quite dormant this time of year out of necessity. In another sense, much preparation is underway for the busy and short summer construc-tion season ahead. We are hoping to finish the last of the flood related projects includ-ing rebuilding the playground and concession stand, and the building of footbridges. Work is underway, lead by Fleischmanns First, to see to the revival of the Village pool. This is all in addition to several other infrastructure related projects as well. It is great to see that the renovation process has also begun on the theater building with patching the roof as the first priority, and facade restoration will begin when the weather permits. So much to do! Thank you everyone for your hard work, support, and optimism!
