    “THE QUARRY”

  • FIRST KHANACROSS FOR 2016 HAS BEEN RUN AND WON

Sunday 17 January saw the first event at the Quarry for 2016 in the form of a Khanacross, which was very well supported with 31 entries. The day was a great success and the general vibe around the grounds was that everyone enjoyed the competition as well as the relaxed and social day. A notable change for 2016 Khanacross events is the introduction of two classes for 4WD category – these being 4WD non-turbo and 4WD turbo.

A big thanks to the Plenderleith crew who manned the BBQ and drink stand, which was a sell-out. Also thanks to Michelle O’Toole and Jo Moore who were on hand early to assist me with the admin, and Deanne Hudson who most ably helped out Robbo with timing. Also a big thanks to Rod Simonsen who was charging around on the ride-on mower early to make the spectator area a bit more pleasant for users.

Racing was hotly contested, with Toby Ivanovic (1st outright and 1st in class), Ian Plenderleith (2nd outright and 2nd in class) and David Catt (3rd outright and 1st in class) slogging it out for the top honours. Other notables were Michael Moore who was 1st in juniors, with Harrison Hudson coming in a very close 2nd. Gus O’Leary was another junior who had a successful day. Long-time regulars of note were Alan Paul 1st in class and 6th outright, Scott Sims 1st in class and 10th outright. Stephen Hill 1st in class, and despite suffering some painful shoulder issues, he had a smile on his face the entire day. Club members Karen Wilson and Theo Poteris travelled from Newcastle to compete, and even though they had to head for home before the event finished they reportedly had a good day. Gwyn Mulholland raced his recently acquired Subaru (fondly referred to by Helen as Choco due its Cadbury purple livery). Warwick Agustin had the mighty mini out for a run and it was a sight to behold burning up the track, as per usual.

WIN television conducted an interview at the Quarry, which focused heavily on our juniors, and the driving skills and car control they have acquired from competing in both Khanacross and Motorkhanas. Hopefully we will get some new blood turning up after watching the story on WIN news.

The next event set down for the Quarry is a Motorkhana on Sunday 7 February.

  • BRILLIANT FIELDS SET FOR BATHURST 12 HOUR

One of the strongest fields ever assembled will contest the 2016 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour at the iconic Mount Panorama.

Forty entries, including some of Australia’s and the world’s best drivers, will start on the grid at next month’s endurance event.

The international line-up includes 2015 LeMans 24 Hours winner Earl Bamber, former Formula One drivers Mika Salo, Andrea Montermini and Ivan Capelli and GT stars Christoper Mies, Christoper Haase, Marco Mapelli, Renger Van der Zande, Benny Simonsen, Alvaro Parente, Rob Bell and Toni Vilander.

They will be joined by14 V8 Supercars drivers including six time Bathurst champion Craig Lowndes, Garth Tander, David Reynolds, Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen.

Joining that list today includes Steve Owen and Luke Youlden, who will team with Roger Lago in the JBS Australia Lamborghini Gallardo GT3.

“With the outstanding mix of world-class internationals and some of Australia’s finest V8 Supercars drivers, this is one the most talented fields assembled for the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 hour,” said Event Director John Casey.

“The growing importance of this race on the global stage, and now as part of the Intercontinental GT Challenge, is reflected by the manufacturer interest and the fact so many great drivers and teams want to come and race on the Mountain.

“When Nissan, Bentley, Phoenix Racing and Nissan confirm their drivers within the next two weeks, that list will get even better and we will be in for something special this February.”

Amongst the entries, factory teams from McLaren, Bentley and Nissan will be joined by teams enjoying works-support from Audi, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Reiter Engineering (Lamborghini).

In total 11 brands and 15 models are represented on the latest entry list, representing Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the United Kingdom, United States and Germany.

33 GT cars are entered across the GT3, GT3 Cup and GT4 classes for this year’s race.

Defending winners Nissan, former race winners Phoenix Racing (Audi R8) and Erebus Motorsport (Mercedes-Benz) and Bentley team M-Sport are yet to publically announce their driving squads however all are expected to offer race winning potential between Australian and International stars.

A majority of the cars entered in the outright class are expected to feature at least one driver with the capability to contend for the prestigious ‘Allan Simonsen Pole Award’ on the Saturday of the event.

A recent addition to the grid is another entry from New Zealand: ‘Team NZ Motorsport’ confirming their participation in Class B with a Porsche 997 GT3 Cup Car to be driven by Will Bamber, Graeme Dowsett, John Curran and Craig Smith.

  • Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour tickets remain on sale via Ticketek with General Admission tickets gaining access to the entire precinct – including the pit / paddock area.

Campsites remain available in the Reid & Sulman campgrounds at the top of Mount Panorama with booking available via the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 hour website.

The race will be broadcast live around Australia on the Seven Network on February 5-7.
