TRANSCRIPT
We are about to celebrate thesecular new year. Time to hit thereset button. It has been almost
four months since we celebrated RoshHashanah, the Jewish new year. At that pointwe spoke a lot about what is community andwhat do we want this community to be. Formost of us, this is our spiritual home. OurJewish home.
The word home in Hebrew is Bayit. There arethree main purposes to a synagogue and thatis reflected in the names in Hebrew for one. BeitKneseth, a House of Prayer. Beit Midrash, aHouse of Study and Beit Kneseth, a House ofAssembly. These three names reflect our visionstatement of meaningful observance, lifelonglearning and building community.

Man of the Year and Youth of the Year for 2016 Information
The Midwest Region FJMC (Federation ofJewish Men’s Clubs) annually celebrates
valued volunteers and young people in itsMan/Youth of the Year Dinner. As reported inlast month’s HaKol, CKI Men’s Club is proud toannounce its Man of Year will be Marc Zemel, and its Youth of the Year will be Katie Irelan.Marc and Katie are being recognized for theiryears of service to Men’s Club and CKI ingeneral (Marc obviously a few more years thanKatie).
This year’s dinner will be held on Sunday, March6, starting with a silent auction at 4:30 PM, atBeth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah, 3220Big Tree Lane, Wilmette (just minutes fromWestfield Old Orchard Shopping Center).
The event is annually attended by hundreds, and reservations are a must. Reserve early, before February 15, for the discounted price ofjust $36. The price rises to $45 on February 16,and the last day for online registration isFebruary 26. To make your reservation, simplygo to the Midwest Region FJMC website, atwww.midwestregionfjmc.org/event-registration/?regevent_action=register&event_id=3.
You can also show your support for Marc andKatie by purchasing an Ad in the eventadbook. Details and easy-to-followinstructions on placing an ad via the internetcan be found at the aforementioned website,athttp://www.midwestregionfjmc.org/event-registration/?regevent_action=register&event_id=6.Ads range in price from $30 to $225. Thedeadline for ads is February 21.
Note that 50% of Youth of the Year ad revenuefrom each synagogue will be rebated to thatgroup’s synagogue Youth Department. So CKIgets half of all Katie’s ads. Other funds raisedfrom the event helps underwrite the cost ofRegion retreats and FJMC’s biennialconvention.
So, to recap: 1) make your reservation toattend the March 6 dinner; 2) place a coupleads to support CKI’s honorees; 3) do bothsoon, before you forget; 4) attend the event.

From the Rabbi’s Study...
And there is a fourth plank. This is a House thatembraces diversity. Whatdoes that mean? It meansthat we accept peoplewhere they are. It meansthat we create a safe,non-judgmental spacebased on Jewish values, Jewish practice andJewish law. It means that we welcome people. All people.
In our congregation we have people whowere born in 17 foreign countries. Can youname all the countries? We have people whowere raised Orthodox or Reform or just Jews.We have people who were not born Jewish

and have chosen to join with us and becomeJewish. We have people who are “fellowtravelers,” just like there were in the HolyTemple in Jerusalem that built a special courtjust those, just like the mixed multitude thatleft Egypt.
As the rabbi, it is my job as mara d’atra, masterof the place, to guide and teach all themembers of CKI while upholding Jewish law.Yet, Jewish law itself represents a widespectrum of acceptable Jewish practice. TheTalmud itself, our major guide of Jewish lawpreserves the arguments of the rabbis witheach other, even across the generations. That iswhy I as the rabbi enjoy helping peoplenavigate what is appropriate, what is authenticfor them. And that is the key—what isappropriate and authentic for each person.Because, even in the Orthodox world, there aredifferent levels of practice and observance. There isn’t just one Orthodoxy. The Ashkenaziand Sephardic don’t necessarily agree—justask about rice for Passover as one example!Hasidim, Chabad Lubavitch, Musar, Litvaks andMatnagim, Modern Orthodoxy, Naturei Kartaand Gush Emunim. All examples of varieties ofOrthodoxy.
So how do we as a congregation navigatethese differences? Especially if we ourselves arenot Orthodox? With study and research. Withcompassion and grace. With understandingwhat the range of Jewish opinion is and thenchoosing what is right for us as individuals and
as a community. With balancing the needs ofthe individual with the needs of thecommunity. And yes, by asking the rabbi.
I won’t always have an immediate answer.Precisely because of the nuanced nature ofJewish law. But I promise you I will take eachquestion seriously and we will puzzle it outtogether. That is part of the process. That is partof what I find exciting. I love to watch peopleincrease their own Jewish knowledge andpractice.
I have been thinking about this a lot.Sometimes the needs of the individual conflictswith that of the community. How do we handlethat? In the Reform Movement’s (now old)prayer book Gates of Prayer, it tells us,
“Once we learned one truth, and it wascherished or discarded, but it was one. Now weare told that the world can be perceived bymany truths; now, in the reality all of usencounter, some find lessons that othersdeny…But right was always right and wrongwas always wrong. Now we are told that thereare many rights, that what is wrong may well bewrong for you but right for me. Yet we sensethat some acts must be wrong for everyoneand beyond the many half-truths is a singletruth all of us may one day grasp.”
What are those single truths? That is part ofwhat we as Jews search for by coming togetherat CKI.
(continued on page 3)
Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, the former ChiefRabbi of Great Britain and an Orthodox rabbi, talks about this tension in his new book, Not inGod’s Name: Confronting Religious Violence. Hebelieves that over the past four centuriesWestern society has become secularized.Including morality. “Finally in the 1960s camethe secularisation of morality, by the adoptionof a principle first propounded by John StuartMill a century earlier—namely that the onlyground on which anyone, including the state, isjustified in intervening in behaviour done inprivate is the prevention of harm to others. Thiswas the beginning of the end of traditionalcodes of ethics, to be replaced by theunfettered sanctity of the individual, autonomy, rights and choice.”
So again we see that tension between theindividual rights and choice and the needs ofthe community.
Do we have the right to demand certain beliefs, practices or behavior as a community? Is therea community norm?
Sacks believes that religion is precisely thequest to answer these questions. He believesthat while science, technology and the freemarket have been great achievements, theyhave failed to answer the questions that everyreflective individual must ask: “Who am I? Whyam I here? How then shall I live? These arequestions to which the answer is prescriptivenot descriptive, substantive not procedural. Theresult is that the twenty-first century has left uswith a maximum of choice and a minimum ofmeaning.”
That search for meaning is a life long quest. It iswhat gives our life richness. It is again, part ofour vision here at CKI. Creating meaningfulobservance.
Judaism offers us a ladder, much like Jacob’sladder with ascending and descending angels.None of us can be on the top rung at thebeginning. It is a process. The ConservativeMovement(http://www.uscj.org/JewishLivingandLearning/JewishObservance/TheIdealConservativeJew.aspx)sets some goals of for the “ideal ConservativeJew”
• supporting a synagogue andparticipating in its activities,
• studying at least an hour a week, • studying Hebrew• increasing ties and connections to Israel• adding three new mitzvot a year, • working for tikkun olam, the repair of theworld,
• employing Jewish values to guidebehavior even when it conflicts withpersonal feelings or inclinations,
• making decisions about Jewish behavioronly after considering the effect it willhave on Klal Yisrael, all of Israel, all of thecommunity.

Review the currentprayer books and some new ones as we look athow to make services even more meaningful.
The good news is that Treasurer Rich Kruthreports that CKI is in the best financialcondition it has been in years. Again, thank youto the hard work of the finance committee andevery congregant.
As Jews we are lucky, we have twoopportunities each year to make resolutionsand push the refresh button. As we begin 2016,let's each resolve to continue to make CKI acommunity which meets our vision of LifelongLearning, Embracing Diversity, BuildingCommunity, and Meaningful Observance.
Again, we see the tension between the needsof the individual and the needs of thecommunity. As a congregation, I am proud thatwe provide opportunities for members to do allof those things. And I encourage you as anindividual to think about adding a mitzvah, acommandment to your own practice.Experiment with it. Explore it. Have fun with it.(Yes, fun is allowed!).
These seem like goals for the New Year. Thinkabout how you, personally, engage with CKI,with Judaism in 2016. Scattered throughoutHaKol you will find activities and events toparticipate in to enrich your lives, help you findmeaning and answer Rabbi Sacks questions. Then this will truly be your spiritual home.
From our home to yours, Simon and I wish youa happy, healthy new year.

Now it is 2016, and where do we go from here? This is where we need input. We purposely didnot plan much for the winter and springmonths. Thus permitting us to add to ourschedule activities of interest to the ladies ofour Congregation. All ladies are invited andencouraged to join us at our next Sisterhoodmeeting, at CKI, on Thursday, January 14,7:00 PM. At this meeting, we will delve into themost popular activities of interest on ourSisterhood survey, and see which ones toinclude in the upcoming months. Do you havesomething you really would like us to bedoing? Is there something you truly love andwould like to see our Sisterhood try? Pleasecome with your ideas. Even if you don’t haveany, it will be great to have you there for yourinput on what is discussed. When our meetingpart is complete, I am hoping to have a quickdemo of a very popular game.
Our next program will be on Sunday, February21, at CKI. It will be a morning event and willagain be open to the ladies and the men. Staytuned!

As we turn the calendar to January, we once again
have the opportunity, as part of our greater
community, to participate in a much needed food
drive. We are collecting non-perishables for the
MLK food drive that ends with delivery on
January 17. Bags to fill are available at CKI, or
use your own. There will be tables in the social
hall to drop off your donations.Tikkun Olam –Social Action
