2016 is upon us but the music is just beginning. Tours are set to start, new music set to release and we are already out there catching it all. This month we had the pleasure of interviewing Tommy Giles Rogers of Between The Buried And Me’s about their amazing success. Barrence Whitfield - 'Under The Savage Sky' (Rock, Sour; By Dustin Griffin - 5/5 Dragons

Barrence Whitfield is an old school yelper in the tradition of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Screamin' Joe Neal and Bunker Hill. His backing band, The Savages, play a kinetic version of rock n' roll that mixes blues, rockabilly, punk rock and r&b. But old school r&b, the raw, gritty stuff.

The Savages were born in the 70's and their greatest period of activity was during the 80's and into the 90's, during which time they released a whopping ten records. They broke up for a while and resurfaced in a slightly altered form in 2010. Since then they've released three more records of white lightening rock and rhythm and blues. Their last record, Dig Thy Savage Soul, was a brilliant, blistering wild dog of an album on modern revivalist label Bloodshot Records.

Under The Savage Sky, their newest record for Bloodshot, picks up directly where Savage Soul left off. 'Willow', the album's kick off track, begins with fuzzy riffage and pounding drums while Barrence baits the listener to 'lose control' in between couplets of poetry.

`I'm A Full Grown Man' features horns yelling and guitars yelping and Barrence himself letting loose on the mic assuring us that he can still rock a house and 'sooth any woman', despite his age. Listening to his impassioned delivery, you believe him.

`The Claw' features some more down and dirty horns and sludgy guitar, while 'Rock N' Roll Baby' one of the record's best and most frantic tracks, barrels along on its pulsating rhythm like a freight train about to come off its tracks.

`Adjunct Street' slows things down a bit, but contains no less passion or conviction on the part of either Barrence, or his Savages. 'Angry Hands' is a dark, swirling track that plays like the musical personification of Hitchcock's The Birds. The guitars squeal and moan in a mournful warning while Barrence spins his macabre tale.

Fear not though, because 'Bad News Perfume' is nipping at its heals like a hungry, savage dog. It's a fast, catchy tune that will have you dancing around the house and looking for a woman in a skirt to spin and dip with fury.

'Katy Didn't' is an entertaining track about Barrence meeting his match in a woman who didn't take no shit. It's a fun story and another ripper.

The hilariously titled 'Incarceration Casserole' is one of the catchiest tunes on Savage Sky, while 'The Wolf Pack' is a classy throwback tune that wouldn't sound out of place on a Howlin' Wolf record.

'I'm A Good Man' is the musical personification of a man looking for a good woman to settle down with. It reads like a confessional personal ad over dirty horns.

And the album closer, 'Full Moon in the Daylight Sky' wraps things up with reflections on shortcomings, musically and lyrically. It's a nice endnote.

The fact that Barrence Whitfield & The Savages are making music again is a cause for celebration for those of us with the unwavering belief that the 1950's was music's greatest decade and that the greatest music happening during that time was happening underground, in the sweaty, smoky clubs in the bad parts of town. The artists like Bunker Hill who would emerge long enough to cut a track or two and then disappear into the ether, leaving only those few blistering minutes as a record of their ever being there in the first place.

Barrence Whitfield & The Savages may have a discography that encompasses a dozen records, but they operate with the same mystique as a band with only a few short moments to bare their souls. And every track on Under The Savage Sky is played with that same kind of blistering conviction that sounds as if it were the last song these boys would ever play. If that's not rock n' roll, nothing is.

Parquet Courts - 'Monastic Living' (Alternative) By Michael Smith - 3.5/5 Dragons

Since their 2013 debut, Parquet Courts have become fan favorites in the underground post-punk scene. Combing well-written and very technical guitar riffs and effects that go beyond just loud feedback noise, their latest release they bring us something very different. The album begins with "No, No, No!", charming listeners with the kind of track you've come to expect from the band: fun, catchy, very British in sound, and just flat out good. Upon its completion, though, you are taken on a whirled instrumental journey of hypnotic feedback, dark, sexy basslines to oh-so-slightly nod your head to, and the perfect drum beats that may not be extremely complex in nature but keep the perfect beat throughout. This is not an album for just popping in your car on your way to work or wherever, and it's not necessarily

an album that's for everyone. It is a great listen for fans of what creative pedal use can bring to music, and it demonstrates the group's exceptional musicianship, creativity, and ingenuity. This is the type of album and music you'd likely hear in a small dive bar before or in between sets. This may not be the most traditional style of music, but it is a strong work of art rock.

Jeff R is best known as the singer of The Arrogant Sons of Bitches and Bomb the Music Industry! However, with his new solo record, "We Cool?" changing lives coast to coast, look for Rosenstock's punk rock star to skyrocket in the coming year.

5. The Weeknd "Beauty Behind The Madness" (R&B)

Best Tracks: 'Losers', 'Can't Feel My Face'

Canada's proudest musical export right now, The Weeknd has been tapping toes with the infectious 'Can't Feel My Face.' "Beauty Behind The Madness" is so much more than that poppy club thumper though. It's a big, atmospheric record full of mood changes and funky signatures.

doing it like they used to. Taking his cues from 90'ship hop royalty, "B4DA$$" is a dizzying slab of slick beats and fat bars from the first track to the last.

7. Barrington Levy - "Acousticalevy" (Reggae) Best Tracks: 'Linda Mi Sensi', 'Here I Come'

This is a little bit of a cheat because most of the songs on "Acousticalevy" were previously released in their original forms. On this however, reggae godfather Barrington Levy strips the songs down to their bare essentials. It's mostly just him and his guitar and while he uses autotune far more than he needs to, what we're left with is Barrington breathing new life into classic songs. The best reggae release of the year.

8. Elle King - "Love Stuff" (Rock) Best Tracks: 'Where the Devil Don't Go',

'America's Sweetheart'

Elle King has a wicked little voice that makes you think she's always up to no good. Her "Love Stuff" album is one of the catchiest, funnest, most badass releases of the year. Literally every track on this album is a radio top 10 hit waiting to happen. Can't wait to hear more from her.

9. Son Little - "Son Little" (Soul) Best Tracks: 'Your Love Will Blow Me Away', 'The River'

Son Little may seem like he just showed up out of nowhere, but he's actually Aaron Livingston, the prolific musician best known for his work with 1131)2. Son Little's debut release is the perfect mix of old school soul and r&b mixed with modern electronic inflections and heady beats. His voice is the highlight here though and it holds it all together with a wonderfully raspy soulfulness.

10. The Atom Age - "Hot Shame" (Punk) Best Tracks: 'Too Much Fun',

There were a lot of good punk releases this year that didn't quite make the top 10. And one reason for that is The Atom Age's "Hot Shame". The Atom Age is the best punk band you've likely never heard of. But one spin of "Hot Shame" and you'll wonder where they've been all your life. A big, messy, catchy, loud, brilliantly crafted half hour of punk rock glory that will tear the roof off of any building brave best track on the album is also the perfect description.

Michael Smith's Top 10 Releases of 2015: 1) Beach House - Depression Cherry

An absolute masterpiece, that takes listeners on an astral journey through a star filled night sky. You'll tear up at times, and likely cry at some point while listening. There is an artistry to this brand of sadness though, and it is much more than just a

heart wrencher with no direction; the songwriting has never been stronger for the duo, best examples with album closer "Days Of Kandy" which is by far one of the greatest tracks of the band's career, and one of the best endings to an album you will ever hear, breaking your heart, yet instilling a bit of hope and optimism.

Metz - Metz ii

The Toronto trio, strengthen the idea that they are the best Rock 'n' Roll band in the world. Louder, than their first release, and and absolute treat in the resurgence of early 90's post-punk. This album is an absolute must to hear, and this band is an absolute must to see live, where these (and their other) songs are made even more powerful.

3) Youth Lagoon - Savage Hills Ballroom

Quirky, but still humble release, that combines tales of heartbreak, addiction, and an all together melancholy atmosphere; doing so with a charm, that continues to make Trevor Powers one of the best young musicians and performers right now; "Highway Patrol Stun Gun" is one of the strongest tracks of 2015, and one of the strongest tracks in general of the last several years.

4) Soko - My Dreams Dictate My Reality Sad, heartbreaking, dark at times, anxious at others, an album that touches on all of the emotional stages of grief and loss, capturing it with a masterful allure.

5) Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss An eerily mysterious album in a genre that is very much her own, finding the embracing the beauty in the dark side of music, and emotions.

6) Viet Long - Sri Amazing debut release, that is catchy, droney, anxious, exciting, and hitting everything you want from a great alt-rock album, and band, even not letting a small controversy surrounding their name slow them down.

Wild Performance from Good For Grapes Article by Ashton Clemmer

9910 - One of the newest venues to hit downtown Edmonton, AB was host to Good For Grapes and their The Ropes Album Tour with guests Royal Foundry and Swear By The Moon on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015. The show was originally to take place in The Starlite Room several minutes down the road, but was moved to 9910 a couple weeks before show date, which was also postponed from mid November due to road conditions and Good For Grapes being stuck in Revelstoke B.C. It seemed the band was having a mess of a time getting around on this tour as they experienced multiple vehicular mishaps.However, finally making it to Edmonton, the show was a blast and did not disappoint.

Walking into 9910 for the first time, its apparent the venue is smaller than most. The smaller venue could affect the quality of the show, but like I've been told, size doesn't matter. Yet, the tight space allows people to interact and gives a more intimate feel and a sense of sharing the space while the bands play. 9910's sound was solid and showcased the bands in all the best ways and the show was truly heard and enjoyed by all concert goes.

Fairly quickly after the doors opened, the first band took to the one-foot high stage; Swear By The Moon. A duo made up of Meagan Loves and Zachary Moon out of Edmonton, AB. Almost immediately, you can sense an inspiration from Johnny Cash and June Carter as the two sang in unison; a duet styling with Moon on guitar and providing vocals beside Loves. Swear By The Moon's set was slow, but loving and emotional. They played few songs but sounded great despite some technical difficulties in the very beginning. The crowed was captivated by the intimate performance the two put on and would have enjoyed a longer set list.

I had never heard of The Royal Foundry before the show, despite the band being from the next town over, Sherwood Park. The group quickly picked up the pace with high tempo songs involving instruments from synths to cellos.

The night's theme seemed to be based around love as the two front members, Bethany and Jared Salter are married and show their passion for one another through their lyrics. Even though Bethany is small in stature, her voice is large and powerful, drawing all eyes to here when she is belting it. Mid set, SaIte (Jared) asked the crowd, "Does anyone like Neil Young? If not, we're sorry for what's about to happen." The group did a great cover of Rockin' In The Free World - Neil Young. The music produced by this group is feel-good and set an amazing mood for the remainder of the night. The energy alone the band emits during the performance is so enticing, it got people up and out of their seats, and onto the floor. The finished their set list with an amped up audience, who was now very ready for the main act of the night.

Now late into the night, the seven members of Good For Grapes jammed themselves onto the small stage. It isn't to be taken lightly when I tell you that Good For Grapes played the shit out of 9910. The group from Vancouver wasted no time diving into fast paced, blaring, folk music. Trombones, guitars, and hair flying about, Good For Grapes took everything they had, and gave it to the audience. The band released their newest album, The Ropes earlier this year and though they

played plenty from the record, they didn't shy away from performing fan favourites, like Skipping Stone (Man On A Page, 2013) and their cover of Salvation Army by The White Stripes. After the show, despite it being past midnight and the middle of the week, the band was happy to hang out with the fans and talk with anyone who wanted to I've seen Good For Grapes twice now and my first experience is what drove me to see them for the second time. The group is one that knows how to perform live very well and displays their showmanship with tremendous confidence.

King Diamond - Darkness Reigns Triumphant Article by Sean Barrett

It's no mystery why, whenever a band tours, they tend to play sets favoring their more recent works: A. It's closer to where they are now in their journey towards personhood, and B. It's what they're there to promote. That's why tours in which bands play a classic album in its entirety is a rare treat, indeed. Particularly so, when it's King Diamond (,who, for my money, is the greatest living vocalist,] playing Abigail, a conceptual masterpiece centered around a Poe-level tale, gothic storytelling of the highest possible caliber.

More exciting still is when the show in your city is filmed for a live DVD. Why Philadelphia? My guess is because that show coincided with the Full Frost Moon, which, given The King's penchant for archaic esoterica, is pretty solid speculation. Also, Exodus is opening.

The evening's proceedings took place in a large-scale (though smaller than a stadium) venue called the Fillmore, which was filled with heads of all ages, cultures, and sub-genres. As someone who generally attends extreme gigs in spaces that have a less than 300 capacity and doesn't otherwise leave the house much, it was both exciting and sort of overwhelming. However, it could not have happened anywhere else.

On a stage narrowed by the curtain over The King's set-up, Exodus delivered a fast and furious forty-five minute set to an enthusiastic crowd. Though Gary Holt-less, they were still able to bring both the headbang and the mush. The set spanned their thirty year career and was absolutely nailed both vocally and instrumentally. At first I found them an odd choice for an opener, as their vibe feels to me like that of a pizza party, but I quickly learned upon what ground their reputation rested.

Ever since Mayhem Festival came nearby this summer, I had been hearing rumors that King Diamond's voice is better than ever, in spite of his throat surgery a few years back. While I wasn't skeptical, it was simply unimaginable that those shrieks could be topped. There is nothing a pessimist loves more than being wrong.

The curtain dropped to reveal a two-tiered set-up that would humble Broadway, complete with gothic windows, a castle-wall back-drop, a whole bunch of gargoyles, and, of course, the stairs so integral to the story of Abigail La'Fey. Before putting this to use, however, he delighted us all with around four non-Abigail King Diamond songs followed by around four Mercyful Fate songs sung into a microphone at the end of a cross made from human bones. The rumors are true, folks. This is a 59 year old man who could sing and perform circles around his younger self.

With no announcement, we were brought to 1845. As stage-hands carried forth the coffin of baby Abigail, I hear someone a few heads in front of me tell his buddy that he had named his daughter Abigail after this album. I don't blame him. As "Funeral" is spoken through an odd pitch-shifter, The King acted this one without singing it. Not enough is said about his skills as an actor. Add those to his story-telling skills and his vocal chops and this is a man who could single-handedly take the theatre world by storm should he so desire. I digress.

Andy LaRocque, the guitarist who performed on this album originally, and the other fellows, as well as a young female backing vocalist who harmonized wonderfully, chose the stand-and-deliver approach, preferring to let their instruments do the talking. At certain points, hooded figures brought out acoustic guitars for the gentler interludes. This is an album interspersed with at least two solos per song, which, in the absence of the verse-chorus-verse structure, help to break up the narrative, and, more importantly, shred.

Throughout the album's performance, The King made full use of all the space his stage had to offer him, as he acted the parts of Jonathan, The Count and Narrator alongside a woman who played Miriam, The Countess, and, beforehand, several other characters from the parts of his discography covered. If it's the same woman who played "Grandma", her name is Jodi Cachia, and she deserves some type of award. If it isn't, the DVD release will correct me, and you can all egg my house.

What's scarier than all this imagery, all these lyrics, and this whole atmosphere is the power with which King Diamond shrieks, growls, and jumps without warning from one octave to the next in his delivery of these chilling tales. Were it not for this, the menace would not be real. It is. Long Live The King.

Phil and Dave Alvin and The Guilty Ones Blast Sold Out Crowd at the Historic Lobero Theater

Phil and Dave Alvin returned to the historic Lobero theater in downtown Santa Barbara on Saturday, November 21st, to play a sold out concert. The brothers have a long history of performances in various incantations at the theater. One concert, in particular, back in 1982, has become an infamous footnote in punk rock history. Lead guitar veteran Dave Alvin likes to recount the story each time he plays the venue. During that heady performance the brothers played in their rockabilly band the Blasters with the seminal punk rock band X. As Dave remembers it, "The show turned into a full blown riot, with fans ripping out some of the plush seats, and we ended up in the pokey". Some in the crowd Saturday night may very well have been in that crowd back in 1982, but the mostly silver haired sold out audience was much more subdued for this Alvin brothers concert with their new band, The Guilty Ones. But the energy from the Saturday show was far from subdued. Backstage the sound engineer could be heard chatting with the stage manager, "Should I turn down the sound levels?", he asked, in keeping with the elegant atmosphere of the ornate little theater and considering the age of the elderly crowd. The manager responded "Too loud, too old, go home". The show proceeded to go on in the spirit of a real rock and roll show with all amplifiers blazing.

Opening act Dead Rock West played an appropriate set drenched in American roots music. The bands 26-date support slot comes on the heels of their last tour supporting American punk icons X. The Alvin brothers have a long history associating with X,

including multiple tours with the band in the Blasters era. Dave Alvin even joined X for a few years as the guitarist, taking over for Billy Zoom. DEAD ROCK WEST is a Los Angeles based vocal duo consisting of Cindy Wasserman and Frank Lee Drennen. They are touring in support of their new album, "IT'S EVERLY TIME!". The duo played with a full band of talented musicians on the California leg of their tour, including most fittingly, drummer extraordinaire, DJ Bonebrake, the drummer for X.

According to their press release the groups new album was "Released digitally and on vinyl July 17, IT'S EVERLY TIME! (Angel Flight Recording Co.) is a 13 song tribute to the great Everly Brothers. IT'S EVERLY TIME! was produced by Grammy-winning producer Mark Linett (Brian Wilson, Los Lobos, Rickie Lee Jones and Randy Newman) and features DEAD ROCK WESrs authentic appreciation of iconic Everly Brothers standards such as "Cathy's Clown," and lesser-known treasures like "June is as Cold as December." DEAD ROCK WEST recorded the album live with a band--DJ Bonebrake (drums), Dave Gleason (acoustic rhythm guitar), Elliott Easton (lead electric guitar), multi-instrumentalists Phil Parliapiano and David J. Carpenter--as well as special guests: The Section Quartet, guitarist Dave Alvin and bassist Rob Wasserman (Cindy's brother). The live magic was captured at Linett's Your Place or Mine Recording and East West Studios in the very rooms where the Everlys and Beach Boys once worked (and are still equipped with microphones said to have been used by Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley)".

The band began the concert with a history lesson of sorts explaining the link between Everly Brothers music, rockabilly and finally punk music. The set started with elegant music and exquisite vocals and by the encore evolved into a rock drenched jam of roots music, not unlike some of the music of X, itself. The crowd loved it giving the

group several standing ovations.

Phil and Dave and The Guilty Ones took the stage after intermission and proceeded to continue the history lesson on American music, this time focusing on their roots in traditional American Blues music. Born in Los Angeles in the 50's, Phil Alvin and his younger brother Dave were raised on the music of Elvis Presley, T-Bone Walker, and Big Joe Turner. Together they formed the Blasters in 1979, borrowing the name from Jimmy McCracklin's Blues Blasters. Dave Alvin left the Blasters in 1985 to join X, and Phil returned to graduate school to pursue his master's degree in mathematics and artificial intelligence. He later earned his Ph.D. from UCLA. Phil resurrected the Blasters and his musical career shortly after, while Dave went on to a solo career. In 2012, Phil who had been fighting a viral infection with antibiotics months earlier, was hospitalized in Spain when he suffered severe breathing difficulties. He fully recovered after an emergency tracheotomy, and in 2013 Phil and Dave began work on their first album together since Dave left the Blasters. The album became a reverent tribute to one of their biggest influences. The result, Common Ground: Dave & Phil Alvin Play & Sing the Songs of Big Bill Broonzy was released in the summer of 2014. The Alvin brothers supported Common Ground with a concert tour, and in 2015 Dave and Phil returned with a !set of electric blues, Lost Time. The set at the Lobero featured songs from some of the bands favorite performers, including explanations of how the brothers met an interacted with the Blues legends.These included Muddy Waters, Big Joe Turner, Willie Dixon, and of course Big Bill Broonzy, among others. Then the sound man turned the amplifiers up to full throttle for some Blasters classics. The band ended with a triple encore, including an X classic "4th of July," and two more Blasters songs that had the crowd dancing like it was 1982 all over again. (Photos On The Next Page)

PiL Finish Their 2015 Concert Tour With A Sold Out Show at The Fonda Theater In Hollywood

John (Johnny Rotten) Lydon, the godfather of English punk music, brought the latest incantation of his band Public Image Ltd (PiL), to the Fonda theater, in the heart of Hollywood. The sold out show was a fitting finale to the group's 2015 tour. Just after 10 PM the dusty red curtains parted at the historic old venue and the band took the stage. Lydon was joined by Pi L'sother members, Lu Edmonds on guitar, Bruce Smith on drums and Scott Firth on bass. Although all the musicians have played in the band before, only Lydon remains as the original member and mentor, since the groups inception in 1978. The feisty anarchist, best known as the lead singer of the seminal punk band the Sex Pistols, has presided over ten albums under the moniker of PiL. That includes their latest 2015 release, "What The World Needs Now". The band launched into a song from the new album, "Double Trouble" as the crowd surged towards the stage. A diverse group of music fans packed both levels of the theater with nearly every foot of viewing space occupied with entranced fans. In fact, the audience became a little too entranced for the feisty Lydon, master of biting sarcasm and wit, as the evening wore on. His calls for a bit of anarchy and angry shout alongs met with a sheepish response, prompting Lydon to admonish the crowd for their limp response. "Well, you're a sorry lot, you're going to be no match for ISIS," he chided the audience at one point. But it was all in good fun and it didn't deter the band from playing a near two hour set of sophisticated rock, far more complex than the simple punk anthems from the Sex Pistols days.

Much of the set was filled with songs from the new album. The band appropriately dressed in suits came ready for business laying down a cacophony of sophisticated sound, while Lydon laid down his visceral vocals with his distinctive punk cadence. Guitarist Lu Edmonds, a Svengali of sorts, played all manner of stringed instruments, producing surprisingly complex and compelling lead riffs. Edmonds has played in some of the most prominent punk and experimental bands in the UK, including Public Image Ltd, The Damned, Shriekback, The Spizzles and The Mekons. The story goes that he actually got his nickname from members of The Damned, who named him Lu, short for lunatic.

Lydon actually introduced Lu as Jesus, following a fifteen minute version of "Religion" from the band's first album. The jam featured Lu wailing on guitar while Lydon delivered an ever more intense diatribe in his coveted persona as an antichrist, lambasting the follies of organized religion. As the song progressed, Lydon called on Scott Firth's electric stand up bass to be turned up in the house sound system in a building cacophony of deafening bass. At one point the walls of the theater began to rattle. "The bass will set us free!" Lydon yelled as the thumping rhythm reached an ear shattering level. Firth, the master bass player also has an impressive resume of collaborations including Steve Winwood, Elvis Costello, and oddly enough a world tour with the Spice Girls. The Religion jam also featured a solo by veteran punk drummer Bruce Smith. He helped co-found a ground breaking English band, The Pop Group in 1977. The band was best known as one of the first English groups to mix a funk groove with their punk rock roots. The trio meshed so seamlessly behind Lydon throughout the night that they sounded much more like a modern day jam band than a punk group. But Lydon with his strong trademark vocals and carefree humor kept an irreverent punk like feel all during the show.

The show fittingly ended, right at midnight, with a double encore and a bow from the four sweaty performers. Following the concert Lydon threw an after party celebrating the end of the tour, at the Record Parlor, a unique vintage vinyl store recently opened in the heart of Hollywood. A DJ spun eclectic tunes while an open bar fueled partygoers waiting patiently until the wee hours of the morning for the master of ceremonies to arrive. The location was an appropriate back drop for a party thrown by the godfather of punk. THE RECORD PARLOUR has an authentic vibe with over 50,000 vinyl records, vintage stereo gear and music memorabilia surrounding party goers. The shop is available to host live performances, listening parties, press conferences, interviews/photo shoots and can even record live performances to vinyl onsite via a vintage record lathe. Lydon sauntered into the party about 1:30 in the morning and huddled with friends and family, many of whom lived nearby. Lydon actually found a home in the artsy anarchy that is Venice, California, just west of Hollywood. Smiles and funny faces prevailed all around as the party spun into the wee hours of a cold Hollywood night.

Mike Dean is soft spoken, laid back, and strangely wise - an interesting figure to pick apart to be sure - which is exactly what we did!

So how are you Mike?

Mike: I'm doing pretty good. Just touring man. Waiting to get out of the festival thing and get the tour back on track..

Do you not like the festival thing?

Mike: Sometimes you get lost in the shuffle. It's a lot to take in. Even if I wanted to see every band it would be too much to digest.

What do you like so much about the road?

Mike: Well last night was a great example - Shreveport, Louisiana. We hadn't played there in a long time and not a lot of tours stop there. We got to play to some people who were hungry for some music that they're familiar with and that they want to see. There's a high level of enthusiasm because they're not bombarded with too many bands. I like those unpredictable places that turn out to be awesome when you thought it wasn't going to be that good.

I remember Witch Mountain telling me Omaha was amazing on their last tour...

Mike: I can see that! Omaha you never know. You just never know!

What are the other places that blow your mind like that?

Mike: I don't know. There are a couple places in Germany like that.

Are you still in love with the magic of the road?

Mike: I like traveling. It's still cool to just be on the way to somewhere and to cover some ground. You can see what's left of the open spaces. I enjoy that for a certain period of time.

How long until you start to crack?

Mike: Three weeks or so. Then I'm about ready to tag up home for a while.

Are you happy with where COC is at now?

Mike: Oh yeah. Its at this point where we're sort of reconfiguring the lineup back to what we were doing on Deliverance and kind of getting ourselves ready to make a record.

What is the pressure like creating a record now that you've put out so many classics that define the scene?

Mike: It's just a perception. Expectations are any pressure are just from perception. That's not a super tangible thing. Some of the stuff we've done has just come pretty naturally. The stuff that is held in highest regard just came so naturally that it doesn't feel like there's too much pressure.

So it's a reflection of yourself?

Mike: To some degree. It's not about us. It's just about channeling the kind of musical statement we want to make. In a way it's a little traditional, we try do something fresh but there's a lot of traditional elements. We're into traditional rock really.

But now you're part of the tradition... do you see yourself as part of it?

Mike: Not in a self important way. Hubris can get you. But in a sense that there is a responsibility to do something good.

Why do you feel that responsibility?

Mike: Because it wouldn't be fulfilling to do something shitty!

But do you feel a responsibility to create art?

Mike: Well if you're going to ask people for their time to listen to something then yeah. Why bother doing something that's not cool? Do something that you're proud of. We listen to a lot of music and have an idea of what kind of stands the test of time and what we'd like to turn too again and again. We just aspire to create something that might fall into that category for someone else.

So you want that for the next album?

Mike: Yeah but you can't think too much about it or try too hard.

How's the progress on that been?

Mike: We've been playing a It of shows so we've done some individual writing and pulling together ideas but that's it. When we're done with this run around the beginning of the year we'll get together and compare notes and jam on some stuff. There's only so much you can do on the bus or in a sound check. We've got a couple riffs going though.

No comments on any direction then?

Mike: That's definitely to be determined. I have a couple of insights as to where it might go but I don't want to put those out there really. I'd be interested to hear what the other guys would say!

You've known two of those guys for more than thirty years... what is your relationship like now? How do you maintain a relationship?

Mike: You just let it be. You don't try too hard to make it anything it's not. We've got a common purpose and that's pretty much enough. It's not something I get overly analytical about. If it wasn't fun we wouldn't do it.

Is that a general life ethos? If it's not fun you don't do it?

Mike: No - we still have responsibilities and shit that needs to get done. As far as anything like creative or artsy is concerned hopefully that's a maxim that you can apply to it. But there might be days that it's not that fun due to external conditions. But if most of the time you don't have to tough your way through it then it's worth it.

Is there a maxim you do live your life by? Mine is f**k it...

Mike: That's pretty broad but on some level that works. Anything that you want to accomplish that you care too much about and pre-occupy about is going to go sour. You need to have a certain detachment to make it work. You can't be too controlling about things and to some degree you have to let it happen. So yeah, f**k it..

What do you love so much about music?

The music that I love kind of gets you outside of the normal monkey brain state of mind where you're worrying about this or that. Music that I actually enjoy which is... some of it... takes you to another mental space. That's good. You don't get too fixated on one version of reality that you think is real.

Is music an escape from reality?

Mike: It's an escape from one version of reality. To some degree at least.

Released this past July, epically emotive grog-shredders Between The Buried And Me's eighth studio album (ninth if you count their covers album), Coma Ecliptic, has seen them taking a bold leap forward into spastic jamming, powerful melodies, and new lyrical/story-telling territories as well, ranking highly on the Best Albums of 2015 Lists of writers and readers alike. The hype is not empty. Through constant touring, their live show is a well-oiled machine, and their songwriting achieves a rare balance between free-thinking and memorable. On a stop for the tour of this new album [with opening acts Native Construct, Intronaut, and Enslaved] vocalist/keyboardist Tommy Giles Rogers sits down with us to chat.

Did y'aIl [BTBAM] get to pick the line-up for this tour?

Tommy Giles Rogers: Yeah. We always try to be hands-on as much as we can. It's tough finding support, because you obviously want bands that you like, but you need bands that can bring out people and cater to your audience as well. We just look at our shows as the whole night, rather than just us; we want diversity, and we want our fans to hear some new bands, if they haven't heard them before, and just have a cool musical night.

I feel like, when [2007's] Colors came out, it was a step forward from what you were doing, and you were sort of on that for a while. This feels like the next step into the next thing,

Tommy. Yeah, I feel like this is the biggest branch out since then. I don't know if it was anything intentional. It just felt like it was time. With the whole Parallax, we spent a lot of time doing that. We just didn't wanner re-write that. We just wanted to try something new and kind of take our sound somewhere we haven't before. Right when we started writing, instantly it felt different. It wasn't really anything that purposeful; we just wanted to focus more on songwriting - I guess that's the reason it sounds the way it is - and focus more on melody and just creating a record that's based more arounds songs. Yeah, I think we're really happy with it.

Do you view this as an augur of things to come?

Tommy: The cool thing with us is you never know what's gonna happen next - I mean, even we don't. We're never like "Alright, next record we're gonna do this". When it's time to sit down and start writing, we just start working on our own individually and just kind of see where everybody's head is and just kind of how we're all naturally feeling. It's exciting because every record, when we write together, we really don't know what we're all gonna write. It keeps us all on our toes and it keeps it interesting.

The Parallax story bled into The Great Misdirect and Colors. Is the story for Coma Ecliptic complete unto itself?

Tommy: There is a small connection with The Parallax, in the song "Turn On The Darkness", actually, 'cause, originally when I started writing for the new record, I was like "should I write a backstory of The Parallax?", basically, I was kind of writing some ideas and it wasn't really working out. The small portion that I liked worked for a part in this story, where he basically travels - y'know he goes to a different world in each song - in one of the worlds, the guy he encounters is his parallax, one of the guys from the parallax in his past. It's a very small moment. It's not explained that it's him, but I just know in my mind that guy is him.

As I was reading through the story, I was sort of jarred by all the shifts in POV and pronouns. What's the idea behind that?

Tommy: The whole story is just him being confused, even if he doesn't know he's confused mentally, so there's always that - I think he's constantly "Is it me, or is it we?" There's this confusion. He's kind of losing his mind throughout a lot of it.

A couple of times, "velvet" is used in a few different ways -

Tommy: -it's simply just death. [laughter]

Were you active in writing for "The Coma Machine" music video?

Tommy: [The director]'s actually our drummer's brother. We've known him for years. When we started talking about what song we wanted to do, "Coma" was our first instinct, but the problem with doing a video for it was, lyrically there's not a whole lot going on in that song. It's basically just him waking up and preparing himself to go into the coma machine. The cool thing about the video is, we kind of made a side story. It's part of the story that's not on the record. The video shows him and some things in his past that we made up for the video, or the director made up, and it sets the foundation for this character and how he's struggling with that current world he's in, and him in general. I thought that was fun, because that was the only way we could create anything interesting. He started getting some ideas and I was like - we won't write in his past, but we'll give a glimpse into why he's wanting to get out of his current world and travel to past lives. I was pretty hands-on with him as far as the story goes, but visually, it was all him. It was awesome; it was a really good job, and I think it came out really neat.

Have you ever considered doing what King Diamond just did and acting these stories out live?

Tommy: Yeah. We always like to do full-album tours. We'll probably do that at some point for this record. Production-wise, we would love to go as crazy as possible, but you always have to keep finances in mind and all that. Whatever we can get away with, we'll definitely try it.

Getting off-track for a moment, have you heard the other coma-themed prog opera, The Human Equation by Ayreon?

Tommy: I've heard about that. I haven't, no. I actually talked to that guy not too long ago. He's a really nice dude. I had one of his records when I was fairly young actually, in high school, but I hadn't honestly listened to him since then. Some people on the internet mentioned that record. I need to dive into it. I've heard multiple things about it.

I read somewhere that you'd be moving away from the death metal sound. Do you feel like, without it, you can have the same emotional or dynamic range, as you do going in both worlds?

Tommy: I think the band will always have dynamics. I think that's what makes up Between The Buried And Me. Even since day one, we had a lot of dynamics. Like I said earlier, I can't really predict the future as far as where our music's gonna go, but I always see us being heavy. I think that makes these stories stand out, drives the characters and the stories. There's ups and downs, and there's heavy moments, mild moments. I think that's all essential to our sound and what we're trying to achieve with our records. I feel like that part of us is still there in a lot of ways, even though it's not as dominant as it used to be. At the same time, I think it makes the heavier stuff stand out even more on the newer stuff. It makes it even heavier because of the contrast.

Coma Ecliptic's been on a lot of Best of 2015 lists. Do you feel like this validates all those creative risks?

Tommy: Yeah. There's always that moment when you're writing: "Hopefully people like this", but you can't really let that effect you. We knew this record was gonna be different, and we knew there was the chance of people kind of shoving us off. Throughout the years, we've always kind of kept fans on their toes. I don't think we've been very predictable. Our fan-baser I think, has always expected that and is excited by that. We were confident in our fan-base because of that. The response has been great for the new record, so we're very pleased, for sure.

Meet Skinless, New York City death metal titans who, for twenty-three years have been delivering no-holds-barred brutality and insanely high energy live performances. This year, they've returned from a six-year album gap to slaughter the metal world with Only the Ruthless Remain, and, with the addition of a lead guitarist, it just might be their finest album yet. On the last stop of their east coast mini-tour, vocalist Sherwood "Thunder Wheel" Webber took some time out to chat with us. On a semi-inexplicable impulse, I decide to start by asking about a New York-based suicide cult whose members skinned themselves alive in the late ‘80s.

I wanted to start by talking about the Sunshine Family Ministry, whose song you featured at the end of your last video. They're not too removed in time or space from Skinless forming. Is there any sort of inspiration there?

Sherwood Webber: I need to call in an expert on that. Pause.

[Pause. He returns with Joe Keyzer, bassist]

Joe Keyzer! There's clearly been some influence there. Not to say that it was direct, but we kind of found out about each other after the fact. It just seemed like a really good fit, to benefit both groups, who are, I think, benefiting from each other, and moving forward, I think, both groups are gonna continue to benefit from each other.

Wait, what? The Sunshine Family Ministry benefited from you?

Joe Keyzer: I believe so, in some small way. Their ministry is gonna start to grow again.

Sherwood: We should start making shirts and sell them at shows.

Joe: At a certain point, they were [a tongue-clicking noise that indicates "done"] -there was nothing left of 'em, but they're starting to grow back.

Are you serious?

lee, Yeah, they're building again. I have a pipeline of communication with them. I haven't got a chance to listen to it yet, but I got a new track that got ripped down from an old box of tapes that we've been ripping down. It's old music that's been recovered. Its one of the recovered recordings.

All I've heard so far is "Satan is Real", er - not "Satan is Real" - "Satan is Living"

Sherwood: I think they also took some influence from The Louvin Brothers on that one.

Right? It's the same melody even.

Joe: You guys are crazy. I just got an update. New track. I hope it's awesome, 'cause I haven't even previewed it yet.

We've been ripping it slowly, got a big box of tapes of reel-to-reel recordings, and I have a friend of mine working on ripping them down. There's some members of the family that're just now starting to work with us on it.

Joe: Yeah. It's not my project, but I'm part of the pipeline.

Sherwood:There has to be a level of secrecy with the whole thing.

Yeah, can I even print this?

Joe: Hey, if you would like to, it's okay.

So, anyway, it's good to see you out here. I remember reading you wouldn't tour anymore. Is that still the case?

Sherwood: No. I mean, we're touring right now, right? Three shows.

Joe: We're on tour, right now, weekend tour.

Sherwood: Weekend tour, some of the best shows we've ever played. Show number three.

Out of?

Sherwood: Three. [Laughter] We had a good year, y'know? Two thousand fifteen, we played a ton of shit.

Bummed I missed ya at Maryland Deathfest, not having Thursday tickets. Was that sort of your comeback?

Sherwood: Yep, that was a good one. We did Hellfest this year as well, and yeah. This weekend's been f*cking great. Boston, Brooklyn, Philly.

How was Dave [Matthews, lead guitar...not that Dave Matthews] brought into the fold?

Sherwood: Dave and Noah [Carpenter, guitarist and founding member] played in Armor Column together and there was some obvious chemistry there, and then it just made sense. We've always, over the years, kind of toyed with the idea of a second guitarist. When that chemistry was apparent, it was a Pain' no-brainer for us, and Dave - number one - shreds, has an incredible work ethic, and he brought a whole new life to us, which is killer.

Has that affected the songwriting process?

Sherwood: Yeah, I think it has a little bit. He's been a big contributor to that, and, y'know, the guy rips leads, and Skinless traditionally hasn't had a whole lot of lead work, but the guy f*cking kills it.

When you're playing old stuff, do you find yourself retroactively writing lead parts?

Sherwood: Not really, no. On the old recordings, there was always the basis of a two-guitar track going on, which, live, we were always well able to pull off. With a second guitarist, it makes it thicker, heavier, and you can play some of the harmonies.

When Skinless broke up, Noah said it was because the "fire" had gone out. How did you get that back?

Sherwood: We were all kind of spread out, and going in different directions, life-wise. Noah just decided that it was too much of a struggle to reel everybody in. I'm in Denver, these guys are all having kids, doing life stuff. At that point, the fire maybe wasn't there for the band, but now it's f*cking raging.

Sherwood: And we're playing the best shows we've ever played. The band's better than ever. It's crazy.

Yeah, it used to be that the first two albums of each band were the best, but now we've got all these twenty-something year old bands putting out their best stuff.

Sherwood: Absolutely. A lot of bands are like that. New Immolation is f*cking killer. guess it's a testament to the longevity of this scene, where we're playing these shows and seeing friends that we made twenty years ago, playing our first shows. The fact that we're still able to do it and still have these folks around is a f*cking honor. To be able to drink beer with these boys and have fun, play our music and have people so excited about it, it's awesome.

How did you get the vocalist from Dragged Into Sunlight to do a guest spot?

Sherwood. I was just such a huge fan of the band, and kind of reached out to those guys. We were talking about doing some shows, or - there was some exchange there, and I asked him if he wanted to do vocals on our record. He's a big fan, so there's that mutual respect. They're younger guys, a younger band, but it's an honor for me. I love that band,

And [the vocalist of] Demilich?

Sherwood' Antti Boman was out opening for King Diamond, and I work as a production manager in Denver. He was playing guitar in another band that opened up for The King, and we just immediately hit off as beer-drinking death-metal heads and I was like "Well, now's your chance to do your vocals on our record. Let's do it." So it was a drunken 'Phone thing and, boom, had it on the record.

Moving forward, do you feel like you're back in a momentum with this?

Sherwood: Absolutely. We've done a good amount of shows this year, and, for us, it's about all the capacity we can handle show-wise. That's really special for us, because when we do get together, it hits harder than ever. We're always talking about - we were sitting at the bar last night talking about new songs, writing, and getting it going in 2016, so we're a band on our own pace, and that's cool. That's cool with everybody, cool with Relapse [Records], cool with us. We're all family men. That's our priority, but goddamn it's nice to drink beer with our boys.

Tom Hunting is a hard living fun loving dude with a lot of stories to tell and a wealth of metal knowledge. Digging

into the history of metal with him and talking about what makes a great drummer was far too much fun.

So what was it like to be a teenager year old in that thrash scene?

Tom: It was a good time. It was a killer musical climate. We were all listening to anything new we could get a hand on We were really excited by things like Mercyful Fate, we thought that was totally satanic. The NWOBHM hit us like a hammer. We were just listening to the riffs and the drumming and it was all amazing. Angel Witch was awesome too.

It kind of blows my mind to hear the progression in metal from Iron Maiden to something so gloriously brutal?

Tom: I don't know. I think we were just trying to top the things that had been done in the past. Before that me and Gary were listening to classic rock. The hardest thing we heard was Ted Nugent. Then Gary's older brother turned us on to punk rock and we started listening to Discharge and Dead Kennedy's and Exploited and all that shit. So if you combine those elements... then you have Exodus if you sprinkle in some European heavy metal.

What does it feel like to then get to be in a band like Angel Witch?

Tom: When I joined Angel Witch I was less than a year removed from Exodus. They just called me up and wanted me to play on a demo for them. I worshiped the band so they didn't have to ask me twice. It felt great to play drums to the songs I had been listening too growing up. To play on that music nine years after they dropped was a lot of fun.

Why do you think that metal has hit a peak in extremeness... or has it?

Tom: I don't really think that it has.

How do you define extreme?

Tom: I don't really look at image too much. I get that there's stuff that's visually extreme like Marilyn Manson or Watain. But there's image extreme and musicianship extreme. Some of these drummers nowadays do stuff that I cannot emulate! It's pretty crazy. I always look at extreme in a purely musical format. I don't know what defines that though. Metal played by extremely talented musicians I suppose. Exodus kind of honed our skills as we went along. We didn't have a plan. We are all influenced by what we hear every day, not just with music but life in general.

Obviously you're one of the most influential metal drummers of all time. How does it feel to have a generation of artists who've pushed your own style to the next level?

Tom: I love them all! Dave Lombardo for example got way faster between Slayer records. He was definitely honing his skills. There's a lot of people who have influenced my style like Clive Burr from Iron Maiden and nobody ever talks about him! I prefer his drum tone to Nicko actually and he would do all these crazy disco beats. Michael Schenker too - nobody ever says it but he's a really funky guitar player! Some of that old UFO shit is just funk with a rock and roll drum beat.

What other forgotten metal guys asides from Clive Burr should we turn our focus too?

Tom: I think I need to give an RIP shout out to Phil "The Animal" Taylor. He was a heavy influence on me.

Did you know him?

Tom: I met him twice. We only ever played with them once Mikkey Dee joined the band. We'd crossed paths but we weren't acquaintances or friends. I loved his drumming though.

As for other musicians, Michael DeRosier from Heart was awesome. For 1975 he had something of a Bonham style. He was getting f*cking awesome drum tone and just laying it down. Barracude and Heartless have amazing drumming! Keith Moon, Tommy Aldridge, the list goes on and on! David Garibaldi from Tower of Power was awesome — Bay Area funky grease music. I pulled from everywhere.

Even Sha Na Na?

Tom: No! (Laughter) Actually our old lawyer was a member of Sha Na Na, I'm not going to say his name though! I might get sued!

What drummers these days have good tone?

Tom: Dave McClain from Machine Head, Will Carrol from Machine Head, I've got awesome drum tone! (Laughter) I like to tune drums, our producer Andy gives me good ideas and I love my Yamaha drums.

What defines a good drum tone?

Tom: It all depends on the genre of music. If you get a big ass 20 inch crash with tons of decay that ain't gonna work in my band. You have to be selective. With that kind of cymbal it sounds like a gong and if you're playing a fast song that doesn't work. I always compare my drum tone to maybe Phil Rudd but tuned a little bit higher and a little more resonant on the toms. But that's more of a personal preference. I know what I like.

For example when I get a snare drum that I like I call it a 'crack dealer'. It has a special crack to it and it can get in and get out between guitar parts. Sometimes it's a fight between me and the guitars!

Is that part of the appeal of playing drums? What do you like about playing drums?

I like to create songs. I like to be a part of the creative process. I like to hear a riff for the first time and go from the uncomfortable initial stage to its final recorded version. It's a fun process to build shit. I love that part of it. And we have awesome guitar players in our band and it's fun to sit and woodshed with those guys most of the time.

Most of the time?

Tom: Every song doesn't necessarily write itself. Lee is a different type of writer to Gary. Lee and I sat for three hours one day and came up with like 70 seconds of music and then the next day Gary came in and we figured out a song in twenty minutes!

Do you prefer writing with Gary?

Tom: I like both of them. They both write killer music. Gary and I have a longer history together so there's that. We have a built in comfort level that allows us to jam. Whereas when Lee comes in we will lay down six drum beats for a riff and he'll leave thinking about it and he won't say which one he likes right away. Lee makes wine, Gary makes moonshine. (Laughter)

What do you love so much about music?

Tom: Dude! That was straight out of Almost Famous (Laughter!)

What do you love about Almost Famous then?

Tom: Kate Hudson is super hot! I don't even like blondes but she is exceptional! It's a great movie with a real story based on true facts. I've seen musicians behave that way!

Any final words of wisdom?

Tom: Just be true to yourself and if you get good in anything humble yourself to that. No matter how many people tell you are badass don't go believing it!

The Power of Protest

Protest are smart guys, and interesting ones at that. They bring a lot to the table and are clear about what they love. Digging into just about everything with them in a fun and short interview was far too much fun. Interview By Matt Bacon

How are you guys?

JE It's good! We got in town and played an early set at the Korova last night with some cool bands.

How does it feel to be on a festival with King Diamond?

Jason: The first thing I did was buy the t-shirt because it has our name on it and King Diamond's name on it and that's probably never going to happen again.

Ronnie: Exactly! We've been doing this a long time as collective members and we just hope it can keep going.

What are you goals with Protest?

Jason: Right now we've got two more records coming out as a part of a three part EP series, fourteen tracks total and after that we're going to start hitting it hard again after the new year.

Why are you doing three EP's rather than a record?

Jason: It's largely so you can have a steady stream of new material. It also gives us a little more time with each new piece of material. With small bites people can digest it more easily. People don't really listen to albums anymore so I figure giving them chunks is better.

Have you always been so forward thinking?

Jason: Well yeah. My day job is in marketing and advertising so I'm always thinking about that.

Ronnie: I'm a high school assistant principal so I'm definitely in touch with the kids. I kind of get where their thought process is coming from!

What do your kids think?

Jason: They always joke about how cool I am! When I meet parents they think it's cool too and say they'll check it.

Are you tatted up?

Ronnie: Nope — I'm not interested in that. I don't think any of us in the band have tattoos actually. That's just a personal thing. It differentiates us though.

What else differentiates you guys?

Jason: The fact that it's a bunch of shaved head white dudes and one black dude. Some of the smaller towns in the region don't know how to take that! (Laughter)

Really though - our style is rooted in 80s thrash with touches of hardcore and it's something we've always stuck too but it feels like it's starting to lean our way a little

Why do you think thrash is coming back?

Jason: I think it comes in waves - kind of like how there is a resurgence in nu-metal. Once you get a foothold people remember you.

How has all the touring been?

Jason: The most recent thing we did was up to Full Terror Assault but hopefully next year we can get to Europe and sneak up to the East coast.

How are you going to get to Europe?

Jason: We've got our hands in some different peoples sights. There's a guy who works at St. Vitus who's looking to get us distribution but this is early on. He thinks we could make it happen.

So is this whole thing a step forward or just another part of it?

Jason: I think every time we do this it's a step forward. We're pretty much past local shows now, we do a lot of national stuff and each one of those is a bigger step forward. It's a slow crawl but it's happening.

What do you guys love so much about music?

Jason: Everything! We don't just listen to metal! We are die hard 80s thrash guys for sure but coming down here this weekend it was a mix of black metal and Depeche Mode.

Ronnie: I love 80s pop music!

Jason: used to be in a band that was like Frank Zappa meets Sepultura.

Ronnie: But this is our thing - this is where our heart and soul is!

Rafael Martinez is distinctly good dude - in my hat with him I got the impression that he's just happy to be here and sharing his music with the world. It's hard to believe that music as demented as that of Black Cobra could come from someone with such hope in their heart. So how Raffa, how are you?

Raffa- Good! This tour has been awesome! We've been wanting to tour with the Yob dudes in forever so its great!

What is it like to be on the road with such a critically acclaimed band?

Raffa: I don't read the press much, but I've always loved the band and I love that they are getting acknowledged. I've known Mike Scheidt for thirteen years and from the beginning I was always very impressed with the music and they should have been huge from the start in my opinion but sometimes it takes a while for people to catch on. They've been a big influence on me for a long time.

You said you've known Mike for thirteen years... how did you meet him?

Raffa: I was tour managing this band Lost Goat and we played the Samurai Duck in Eugene and they didn't even have any music out. They had one song on a compilation for a magazine from Europe. I kept listening to it though and then Elaborations in Carbon came out. Then I played with him a few years later with another band. We would always hang out when we were in the same area and when Black Cobra started we started doing shows together here and there. There was that stop when Mike did Midian for a little bit, and we played with Midian too. There growth has been awesome and it's awesome to see so many people getting into it since people weren't aware of them for so long.

Why do you think this type of music is more popular than ever now

Rati: Things come in cycles. In the early 2000's there was a lot of sludgy doom going around. I don't know if there wasn't enough labels pushing it or what. Relapse wasn't that big back then. Metal wasn't cool then. People were wary of it. Doom and metal go hand in hand.

Is metal cool now

Raffa: Apparently! I think Sleep playing again and coming out to play new shows has opened people's minds to explore that world more than before. Sleep is playing an album that was released twenty one years ago, Dopesmoker and it's still holding up. People know the legacy of it. This thing that was made twenty years ago is almost classic rock.

And I can listen to Sleep with my dad...

Exactly! It has that timeless Sabbath element that has been reinterpreted in a modern way. We've done a couple shows with Sleep and we've toured with High On Fire. Being from San Francisco helps too - we're all like family there. I'm really happy for them too because they never really got to reap the rewards that I think they deserved twenty years ago. Finally people are now getting to realize how important that was. Obviously it was because of how many people have been drawn to it.

You mentioned tour managing earlier... do you do that a lot?

Raff-..: Oh no! That was just a onetime thing. Lost Goat were friends of mine and I wasn't in a band at the time. They just invited me along. It wasn't a big thing.

What do you do when you're not on the road?

Raffa: I drive a truck and I run a studio. I've been doing delivery all over San Francisco

since I moved there 15 years ago. Now that the band is a little more active we're able to sustain ourselves a little bit more.

Do you think you're getting to the point where you won't need a job?

Raffa: Its getting close now. Our popularity has really grown in the last couple years and we are able to get enough tours throughout the year that we don't need to work as much on the road. It's a job.

Do you even like being on tour?

Raffa: I love it. I used to travel all the time with my family when I was a kid. It's in my nature I guess. I love doing it, playing in new cities, meeting new people, finding new clubs, it keeps you on your toes. Every day is an adventure. It helps you become a better musician. You have to do well under any circumstances.

What about your relationship with Jason? At this point it must be like a marriage...

Raffa: We actually grew up in Miami together, I've known him since 1996! I moved to California and he was living in New York after we lived in Miami and we kept in contact as friends. He was playing in Cavity, I was playing in Acid King who I still play with here and there. In 2001 I had an idea to do a long distance band as an experiment. We didn't want to tour or put out albums. Jason and I have very similar taste in music and Miami has a very small underground culture. It goes beyond music too! So I just said 'hey man let's experiment and see what happens!'

What kind of books do you like?

Raffa: We're both really into horror and science fiction. Obviously Black Cobra has a major science fiction vibe. I like a lot of physics and science and also history. We're into a lot of classic horror too. I think metal and horror are very close. There is something very tied into it there.

By extension on that... what do you think draws people to Black Cobra?

Raffa: I don't know! In the beginning being a two piece there weren't many two pieces around, there was only really Jucifer and Lightning Bolt, but Lightning Bolt was more artsy. We played loud intense music and people that like things that have that kind of substance really like what we do.

What do you love so much about music?

Raffia: It's a mystery. It hypnotizes you. I think it goes beyond the boundaries of space and time when you listen to music and truly feel it you forget about everything else. When you're in the moment nothing else matters and that's what makes you save up for a month so you can buy a ticket to see your favorite band or how you can't wait to hear a new album because it touches your soul in a way that nothing else could .Growing up listening to my favorite bands who did that for me and the fact that I'm doing that now for other people is huge for me. It's a very selfish thing, you play music for yourself as something that you have to do, it's a need and a means of expression and creation. When people tell you how much they love your work that's amazing. There's no physical explanation. It's a spiritual thing on a vibrational field.

Do you have any last words of wisdom for me?

Raffa: Be good! Do what you love and be true to yourself! Be cool to people and yourself before anything. There's a lot of bullshit that comes at you and how you handle it defines you. Try to keep upbeat as much as you can be grateful for what you have. You don't realize how bad the rest of the world has it. The fact that we can even be here with these friends and people is awesome and it could stop tomorrow. Make the most of your days!
