Welcome to 2017!
We’ve had quite a spectacular year in the Grand Prix Region in 2016: Amazing Tours Driving Events Parties Our always fantastic monthly breakfast club
Wow! What a year!
Wrapping up my first year as President of this great region, GPX, I’d like to extend my thanks to all those who make our region so great. Member volunteers first, since we can’t do it without you. Our terrific board members, who work tirelessly to organize all these great events, and our sponsors, without whom we couldn’t put on any of these events.
Check out the masthead page in this magazine and you’ll see the names and pictures of many of those who help to make all this happen. Also, please reach out to our many advertisers and sponsors whenever possible and, when you do business with them, mention that you’re a member of the Grand Prix Region of PCA. It helps them know that their advertising and sponsorship dollars are effective. They also make this magazine, “The Circuit” possible.
We’ve got a terrific 2017 planned. Here’s a few of the events that are coming up. On January 14 we’re going to completed redesigned Petersen Automotive Museum, where we’ll get a docent led tour of the “Vault”
A visit to the new Porsche Experience Center is scheduled for February
Day Away from Work and our annual Santa Monica Mountains Fun Run to Paradise Cove in March.
Trips to Solvang and Angeles Crest, our annual New Member BBQ, and many others, including Mt. Wilson for a night of star gazing on either the 60-inch or 100- inch telescopes in July or August.
Check our calendar inside the front cover of the Circuit or on our website at www.grandprixregion.com
Coming in April… The 16th Annual California Festival of Speed. April 21st – 23rd. The largest Porsche event in the SouthWest
From the website: The California Festival of Speed is the Porsche enthu- siasts dream weekend. Club Race, Time Trial, Swap meet, Porsche Corral, Porsches For Sale, Porsche Timeline display, Vendor Row, Track Tours, Friends, Fun and all things Porsche. Need we say more? This event has race cars, show cars, it can even have your car! See the cars, meet the drivers and experience the excitement!
We need volunteers for this event, and it’s so much fun. Here’s the link to the website that describes the event, and has the contact information for volunteering. http://www.zone8.org/events/speedfestival.php
Please join us every month for our Breakfast Club on the first Saturday of every month at Glory Days Beachside Grill in Seal Beach. Visit with Ludmila in our Goodie Store for some terrific club merchandise.
The January Cone Zone will feature 924, 944, 968 & 928 and the February Cone Zone will be all 997’s. so if you have one of these models, bring it out for a special group parking opportunity and featured photos.

PCA – Fueled by Volunteers“Fly low and avoid the radar”
Does anyone have a connec-tion with the LA County Board of Supervisors?
From 2010 through 2013 GPX (and other clubs) rented a parking lot at the Pomona Fairgrounds for Drivers Ed and Autocross events. This was a great venue and, over those years our Performance Driving Program grew from two days a year to nine.
When we tried to secure 2014 dates the cost had jumped 2.5 times and they stopped multi-day event discounts, which made Pomona not financially viable.
We've always felt that if someone with the proper influence could champion us, that it would not take much more than a phone call to the right person to open the doors again.
Don't get me wrongNow, don't get me wrong... There is nothing wrong with the GPX program the way it stands. I just hate seeing such a great facility "going to waste" not only to us, but to other regions and clubs. Orange Coast region was starting to use Fairplex. The LA Region is talking about starting a driving program. This would be a great location for either of those regions. Performance driving venues are not easy to come by.
Most old parking lots are not well maintained, but the LA County Sheriff Department uses Fairplex for training during the week, so the condition of this track is fabulous, and it goes mostly unused on weekends.
So that's my plea: Does anyone have a contact with the LA County Board of Supervisors or anyone else who might be able to help open up this facility at a reasonable price?
As Jeff said in his column on the previous page, GPX is in great shape. We have a very active group of key volunteers (not that we can't use more of you) who make all of this happen. You probably know that we typically conduct our monthly board meetings right after our monthly breakfast meetings, so if you'd like to see how things get done in the
Grand Prix Region, stick around after breakfast and join us. You would be most welcome.

Thank YouDesigned by Feulner/Greene 2016
• January — 924, 944, 968, 928• February — 997• March — All GTs• April — 991•
Derek Bell can be considered the grand old man of endur-ance racing because his driving career endured for close to 50 years, winning all the big events: Le Mans and Daytona, with a couple world championships along the way. The introduc-tion nicely recaps his life and career spanning from 1964 through 2011, and could be considered an executive summary of the book. But don't stop there. The book is a fascinating read with lots of Porsche content – one of the six chapters is “Porsche: a special partnership”. Though British motorsports journal-ist and editor Alan Henry is listed as co-author, the first person tense in which this autobiography is written does make it seem to be Derek himself talking. Fast-paced and captivating, the you-are-there feeling provided by this book has kept this reviewer up beyond bedtime on several occasions. More than any book in some time, this book revives his youth of living in the racing world vicariously through books.
One incident that stands out is Bell's discussion of the expe-rience (as a 26 year old rookie in his first race after moving up from Formula 3 to Formula 2), of having breakfast with his idol, Jimmy Clark (who had already won more Grand Prix races (25) and achieved more Grand Prix pole positions (33) than any other driver), and riding to the track with him, only to have Jimmy killed in the first heat of the race! What an introduction to big-time racing.
DEREK BELL My Racing Life has very few pages without a picture, but a number of pages without text. In addition to the multitude of pictures, there are lots and lots of words jammed into these 272 pages – old line Porsche enthusiasts
may find reading glasses to be appropriate.
An absorbing page turner, this is a book that reads like a novel written about a guy who drives race cars. His personal comments on many famous people in motor racing may
not be appreciated by all, for which he apologizes in advance, but his forthright observations provide fascinating new insight into the workings of various motorsports teams and orga-nizations, particularly Porsche. Bell comments that without a doubt, Jacky Ickx was the world’s most versatile racing driver at the time of his retire-ment in 1985. After reading this book, this reviewer is convinced that Derek Bell, in turn, was the world’s most versatile racing driver at the time of his retire-ment in 2005.
Derek Bell was arguably the most significant driver to race Porsches. This book also dis-cusses his involvement, some-times very intensive, with the racing programs, formal and informal, of an great variety of
marques. And it further describes his amazingly extensive career as a TV Personality who gave racing commentary from the studio, the track, and even the driver’s seat! A fascinating story very well presented in what may well become a classic book.
DEREK BELL My Racing Life is very liberally illustrated, and at 272, 8-1/2 x 11 inch pages, is ‛coffee-table sized. It should be available for $43.96 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from http://www.quatroknows.com
