In the spirit of the New Year, along with best wishes for a happy one, I thought I’d dedicate this message to a topic of high concern for our community: Safety and
Security. Specifically, how we can build and nurture a safe community.
What makes a safe community? Whose job is it to keep Edgemont a welcoming, safe community for those of us living in Edgemont and those visiting?
The answer is quite simple…. It’s you and me!
Everyone living in Edgemont has a role in keeping our community safe and secure by being the eyes and ears for the Calgary Police Service (CPS). As we go about our day, in work and play, if you see something suspicious or out of the ordinary let the CPS know. It is far better to over report than under. Here are a several ways to help CPS know what you have seen.
If it’s an EMERGENCY situation, for example a crime in progress, ALWAYS call 911. CPS recommends not inter-vening in a criminal act underway.
If it’s something SUSPICIOUS, like possibly the before or aftermath of a crime, or something you think could lead to a crime, call the non-emergency line, 403-266-1234 or report online via the CPS website: http//Calgary.ca/cps/Pages/home.aspx.
If it is a GENERAL CONCERN you’re not sure about, you’re looking for advice on something that looks unusual and you want to know how to be helpful, you can contact the Edgemont Community Resource office for CPS and ask for Constable Gasper Aceti at 403-428-6700 or [email protected]. Please be assured every time you contact the CPS your personal information and any information you provide will be kept in strictest confi-dence. Constable Aceti is new to his role with us and plans to regularly attend future ECA Board meetings to get to know us better.
If it’s regarding a tip pertaining to a crime or potential crime. CRIME STOPPERS is a way to either talk or email anonymously with the police. They can be reached at www.calgarycrimestoppers.org. A reward of up to
$2,000.00 is offered to anyone providing information, which leads to an arrest or the recovery of stolen prop-erty or the seizure of illegal drugs. This kind of informa-tion provides an important and valuable public service. To understand further please refer to the Crime Stop-pers website and specifically the “Tipsters Information”.
CPS supplies tips on how to protect your property. They also provide crime statistics for our neighbourhoods. The Federation of Calgary Communities (FCC) offers free workshops on a wide variety of topics related to building safer communities.
Finally, if you have ideas to help make Edgemont a safer and more secure community, please let us know by emailing me at [email protected]. With all of us involved we can enjoy the New Year and ensure that Edgemont remains a most desirable place to live.
(Note of appreciation: I wish to thank one of our Board members, Jane Coates, for supporting me on this topic and providing valuable input.)

A Message From Your Volunteer CoordinatorJeff Edwards • 403-616-6480 [email protected]
WHAT’S HAPPENING IN EDGEMONT
Happy New Year Edgemont!
I would like to introduce you to our new Assistant Volunteer Coordinator – Lois Uptigrove! Lois and family have been Edgemont residents and amazing volunteers for many years. She has been instrumental with the annual Clean-up and Charity Garage Sale, the Sense of Community Committee, the Edgemont Networking Group, last year’s Jane’s Walk, and many
other local initiatives. I am very excited to have her assist me. And for the next three months she will be your primary contact as I am on sabbatical (from my Pastoring role at Northwest Community Church) from January to March. Lois will be available at the [email protected] email, so drop her a line!
Thanks to everyone who participated in and attended the Edgemont Christmas Market which happened November 18th at the Edgemont Community Centre (see pictures). There were more than 80 artists and ar-tisans who were there. Thanks to the Edgemont Scouts and Beavers who manned the donation table. Entrance donations went to the Christmas hampers.
Thanks to everyone who helped with Christmas ham-pers this year! We again wrapped and delivered pres-ents for a number of families in our neighbourhood. Thanks to all who donated! We`ll have pictures of the wrapping in our next article.
Here is an Ice rink update: The rink project is done! With the exception of the basketball backboards being rein-stalled, and a few other details, we’re up and running. Thanks to Rick Wierzbicki, our head ice-maker and Sean and a new volunteer… Rob Weston from Dalhou-sie. Thanks Rob! They have been flooding in the morn-
ings (see Rick’s amazing flooding pictures). They could use a few more ice makers, though. Email [email protected] to volunteer!
The Edgemont Youth Press has news: Carol Mumey has done an amazing job as editor over the last couple of years and is now passing the job to two wonderful members of the EYP. Thanks Carol for making our EYP happen! Congratulations to Asha Nathoo and Emily Gvozdenovic who will be taking coordination of the EYP and may work this in conjunction with the Tom Baines Newspaper Club. Thanks Asha and Emily and all the EYP.
The Casino Fundraiser Coordinator position has been filled by a new resident of Edgemont… Julia Benson. Thank you, Julia, and welcome to Edgemont! I’m sure you will be hearing from her in future editions of the Inside Edgemont.
The Edgemont Networking Group (ENG) is being or-ganized by Deirdre Harris and they had a successful “Meet Up Edgemont” event in November. Thanks to everyone who participated in that. A couple of new ideas are forthcoming. (ENG is a group of individuals and representatives from the schools, community or-ganizations and churches in Edgemont that meet once a month to learn what is happening in the community and to work on projects together.)
Friday Foodbank deliveries – We deliver food to needy families into the northwest at 10:30AM Fridays. If you have wheels and an occasional Friday morning open for a good deed, let Lois know and she will get you on David Mikitka’s email list. David is now coordinating the food deliveries and we thank him!
Wednesday Breakfast Club – 7AM Wednesday morn-ings a number of volunteers serve around 50 hungry kids breakfast before they head off to school. This is a very important and well-loved program. Would you like to donate or help out? It’s easy. Again, email us to get involved.
Snow Angels continue to clear snow and ice from the sidewalks of their neighbours who may be less able to do it themselves. Thanks to the wonderful Snow Angels who have volunteered! We’re always looking for more.
Want to hear about other opportunities and events? Email us and get on the Edgemont Volunteers email list.
Thanks everyone. Love your neighbour in 2018!

“For thousands of homeowners, polybutylene plumbing has become a recurring nightmare.”
-Ed Bradley, CBS-60 Minutes
Polubutylene (also know as PB or Poly-B) pipe is a flexible, grey pipe that was used in several million homes built from 1970 to the mid 1990s. Due to problems with leaks, Poly-B water pipes are no longer accepted by United States or Canadian building codes, and have been the subject of class action lawsuits in both countries. Poly-B fails without warning because it breaks down from the inside of the pipe over time, which can result in sudden catastrophic damage or severe structural damage, including mold of a pipe has been leaking for some time without detection. The older the pipe, the more likely it is to fail. Not replacing Poly-B in a home has a 60% probability of failure within 20 years, which further increases over time.
Modern West Plumbing & Heating specializes in the complete turn-key removal of Poly-B in your home by a professional, courteous, and experienced team including a Master Plumber. Replacing this pipe in your home will protect your investment and your personal belongings, save thousands on repairs, and add significant value to your property.

Introducing the Edgemont Networking GroupBy Lois Uptigrove
The Edgemont Networking Group (ENG) was first formed in 2013 by our City of Calgary Community Social Worker, Jennifer DiMarzo. The purpose was to bring to-gether the strong assets of Edgemont to better under-stand the role of each organization, the services they were providing and ways we might serve Edgemont more effectively. Caring for our community is what unites this diverse team to work together, share best practices and improve access to services for community members.
Jennifer is no longer assigned to Edgemont, but we continue to move forward now under leadership of Deirdre Harris.
Participants in ENG include representatives from all three schools: Tom Baines Jr. High, Mother Mary Green Elementary, and Edgemont School; The Edgemont Community Association; City of Calgary; Calgary Public Library; Alberta Health Services; Calgary Police Service; three neighborhood churches: Foothills Alliance, North-west Community Church and Westminster Presbyterian; and a wide array of service agencies active in Edge-mont: BowWest Community Resource Centre, Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizen’s Association, Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA), Calgary Housing, and others. ScotiaBank has been involved and brought key expertise on financial literacy.
Subcommittees were struck to focus on particular is-sues brought forward. These teams yielded exciting re-sponses like the Edgemont Breakfast Club, cooperation on Grandma’s Kitchen program, a Jane’s Walk, promo-tion of ESL resources, Edgemont Youth Press, Financial Literacy Education, a Cross Cultural Communication Workshop, Coffee Networking for Job Seekers and the Meet Up Edgemont—with more to come.
The ENG met this October and reaffirmed their commit-ment to this project. Keep watching Inside Edgemont for exciting ways to get involved with YOUR community.

Pranic Healing for a Happy and Prosperous Life
Pranic healing is an ancient science and art of healing in-
troduced to the world by Grand Master Choa Kok Sui. Pranic healing is a high-ly advanced and potent, no touch, no drug healing modality. “Prana” is a Sanskrit word meaning life force, and is a key for a happy, healthy, and prosperous life. We are affili-ated with the Institute for Inner Studies, Inc., founded by GMCKS in Manila, Philippines.
Pranic healing can be used for healing as well as preventing physical, mental, emotional, and psychological problems. This helps to heal finances and relationship problems as well. This can be applied anywhere and ev-erywhere in your daily life, for human beings, plants, animals, offices, businesses, home etc. Pranic healing also supports and helps you to grow safely and rapidly in your spiritual jour-ney.
Kriyashakti is one of the gems from GMCKS to bring abundance and prosperity into your life. It is the science and art of materializing your wishes. Superbrain Yoga is another valuable gift from GMCKS. This is a simple and effec-tive technique to energize and recharge the brain. This simple exercise offers benefits for anyone with ADD, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Alzheimers and more.
All are welcome to an Open House on Monday, January 8
