**Reminder Club minutes should be emailed or turned in to the Extension Office after every meeting. ** **Please pay your club dues if you have not already done so.**

Annual 4-H Volunteer Training

The mandatory annual Volunteer Training will be held Tuesday, January 29th at 6:45 pm at the Chickasaw County Extension Office. All club leaders should attend this training. Please RSVP by January 29th by 4:30 pm. If you are unable to come on January 29th, please contact the Extension Office.

Financial Club Packet

All club leaders will be receiving an informational club financial packet in the mail. Please bring this packet along with your questions to the leaders meeting on Tuesday, January 29th. We will have a brief discussion with question and answers for 30 minutes prior to the Annual Volunteer Training.

Sheep and Meat Goat Superintendent Position

We are currently looking for a sheep and meat goat su-perintendent. If you have an interest in working with youth and have a passion for sheep or meat goats, please consider completing an application. 4-H experi-ence is not necessary.

Superintendents attend the Chickasaw County 4-H Live-stock Committee meetings 4-6 times a year and com-municate with Extension staff for livestock rules and re-visions. The superintendent also works with the County Youth Coordinator to determine educational plans with-in the species area. The superintendent must be availa-ble during the Chickasaw County 4-H and FFA Achieve-ment Show July 10th – 15th. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply and should obtain an application from the Chickasaw County Extension Office, or email [email protected].

Scholarship Opportunities

DuPont Pioneer Seed Grant for Iowa 4-H Club Community Improvement Projects

The Pioneer Grant is intended to help pay for improvement activities by providing “seed money” needed to make the pro-jects successful. This seed money can range from $50- $500.

Applications for the Pioneer Grants are due January 16th to the Chickasaw County Extension Office and Due to the State 4-H Office by January 30th. For more information visit https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/pioneergrants

4-H Clubs could use this grant money to fund a community im-provement project of their choice, to make fun activities such as Gaga Ball or Jumbo Jenga that could be used to improve our Chickasaw County Achievement Show. Please contact the Ex-tension Office if you are interested in this opportunity

Iowa 4-H Foundation

Each year the Iowa 4-H Foundation gives out over 90 scholar-ships worth more than $90,000. The various scholarship awards range in amounts from $500 to $10,000. Certain scholarships are open to students pursuing any field of study, while others are open to students pursuing degrees in agriculture, food and nutrition, ag business, animal science, journalism, and STEM related studies. Former and current 4-H members graduating from high school or currently attending college are eligible ap-plicants.

Applications are due by February 1st!

Thiesen’s Scholarship

Through the Iowa 4-H Foundation, Theisen’s is giving away (4) $1,000 scholarships to those who will be pursuing Agriculture or Ag Business degrees and attending an Iowa Community Col-lege or a 4 year College. Applications are due Feb. 1st! If you are interested in applying, please contact the extension office or visit: www.iowa4hfoundation.org.

Hixon Awards Opportunity

The Hixson Opportunity Award is a half-tuition grant (estimated value of more than $15,000 over eight semesters) to be used at Iowa State University. Ideally, recipients will represent each county in the state. If you are a high school senior who demon-strates potential in ways that go beyond class rankings and test scores, you may wish to apply. Clothing and Communication Day

What/Who: Are you a 4th– 12th grade 4-Her? Do you like to speak, perform a dance,

sing, give a demonstration, sew or shop for clothes? Then the Clothing and Communica-tions Day is for you. Many different clothing categories to choose from including a $15 Challenge Outfit, purchased garment or sewn outfit. You can also participate in com-

munications activities such as a Working Exhibit (demonstration), Educational Presen-tation on the topic of your choice, Share the Fun, or Extemporaneous Speaking (9th-12

grade only)! Watch for registration details in upcoming newsletters.

When: Sunday, April 7th from 1-5pm

Where: United Methodist Church in New Hampton

Sheep and Market Goat Weigh In

Who: All 4th-12th grade Market Sheep and Market Goat Exhibitors

What: All Market sheep and meat goats that are to be shown at the Chickasaw County

Achievement Show will need to be weighed.

When: Saturday May 4th 8-10 am

Where: New Hampton High School Ag Shop

Subcommittee Help!

Help is needed!! We are looking for both youth and adults to fill four different subcom-

mittees. The subcommittees will plan to meet 2-3 times per year. We would like at

least 3-4 people on each committee. Please contact the Extension Office by January

15th if you are interested.

1) Food at the Fair– plan the food at the Fair and help plan Annual BBQ Event

2) Awards and Record Book Committee– create guidelines for Record Book Awards as

well as County Awards and help plan Fall Awards Program.

3) Fairgrounds and Maintenance Crew– assist with planning, fairground clean up, and

set-up to allow smooth and efficient use of time and resources.

4) Marketing and Publicity– plan and market programs and events related to the 4-H

program, with the goal of increasing 4-H membership.

Winter Postal Match 2018-2019 Time frame for the winter postal match will be November - March, with a registration deadline on Jan. 31, 2019. CWF is a 4-H leadership program for high school youth, grades 9-12. Registration is now open for the June 14-22, 2019 trip. Deadline to register is January 15th. Teens from around the country gath-er at the National 4-H Conference Center to learn more about civic engagement and how they can be a strong leader in their community, country, and world. Livestock Quiz Bowl

Livestock Quiz Bowl is set for April 13, 2019 at Iowa State Uni-versity. This event is the qualifi-er for the National 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl held during Aksarben each fall. Youth in grades 4-12 may participate and the questions cover beef, goats, sheep, and swine. Livestock Judging Coaches Clinic

The Department of Animal Science will be offer-ing a clinic for adults who would like to learn more about how to coach a livestock judging team. The event will be held on April 20, 2019 at Iowa State University. Participants will re-ceive hands-on instruction from the ISU live-stock judging coach and team. Opportunities Beyond the County

Beef Bonanza

The Northwest Iowa Beef Bonanza is on February 2, 2019 at Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg, IA. Partici-pants will learn about calving with the ISU calving simulator, develop skills in judging and scoring cattle, and prepare beef safely. Dubuque County Horse Camp

Get ready for another horse adventure, the Overnight Dubuque County Horse Camp is for those in 4-12th grade held on June 16th-22nd at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds. 2019 Equine Extravaganza

The 2019 Equine Extravaganza will be held March 22-24 at Ellsworth Community Col-lege, Iowa Falls. We all know that having hors-es requires more than riding and jumping! Get motivated to learn more about the science be-hind horses at Equine Extravaganza! It isn't too soon to start gathering a team! Maize Retreat!

The 2019 Maize Retreat will be held April 13-15, 2019 on the ISU Campus and Clover Woods Camping Center. Youth in grades 8-12 from across Iowa will experience 4-H Healthy Living, STEM, Civic Engagement, Leadership, and Communica-tion and the Arts programs through a Latino and Native American perspective. Leadership Opportunities Available for

Senior Level 4-H Members

National 4-H Conference:

National 4-H Conference is a week-long trip to our nation's

capital happening March 28th—April 2nd. Youth stay at

the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, MD with dele-

gates from across the nation. Youth must be in grades 9-

11. Applications are due February 1st.

National 4-H Congress This event is held over the Thanksgiving holiday

November 22-26, 2019 in Atlanta, GA. The event includes

dynamic keynote speakers, community service in the

Atlanta area, workshops on leadership, cultural issues, and

team building. Delegates will also get a chance to tour the

city of Atlanta. Applications are due February 1st.

State 4-H Council:

This group of high school students works directly with Iowa

4-H Youth Development staff to represent the program

across the state. They speak to local 4-H groups, repre-

sent 4-H'ers ideas to staff, and work in committees to plan

the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference, 4-H'ers for 4-H campaign,

and 4-H promotional ideas. To apply for State 4-H council,

members must be in grade 10-11. Applications are due by

February 1st.

State Project Awards:

4-H'ers who have focused on specific project areas during

their 4-H experience can apply for recognition for their ef-

forts through this program. Awarded a $100 tentative

award, 4-H'ers who have demonstrated mastery, leader-

ship, communication, and service in their project will be

recognized as the top in the state. 4-H'ers may apply un-

der two project areas -- only one project area per year will

be awarded. 4-Hers must be in grades 9-12. Applications

are due by February 1st.

State 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program: The 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program is de-

signed to promote 4-H and specifically 4-H Shooting

Sports. Youth selected to serve as Ambassadors will re-

ceive training to become advocates for the program at

county, regional, and state levels. Through the program,

Ambassadors develop their skills in leadership, public

presentation, citizenship, community service, public rela-

tions, and team building. This opportunity is for youth in

grades 9-11. Applications are due by February 1st.

National 4-H Dairy Conference:

The National 4-H Dairy Conference is conducted

through the leadership of 4-H Youth Development,

University of Wisconsin--Extension, World Dairy Ex-

po, in cooperation with the National 4-H Dairy Con-

ference Planning Committee, other friends of 4-H

and the dairy industry. This opportunity is open to all

youth in grades 9-12. Applications due by February

1st.

Iowa 4-H Reporter Program

The Iowa 4-H Reporters is an opportunity for youth

who have an interest in media and the communica-

tions project area. Selected participants will get to

work with professional media mentors from Iowa

Public Television, WHO Radio, and the Iowa News-

paper Association, to develop news media during

two consecutive weekdays of the Iowa State Fair.

Participants will also attend a workshop in mid-July.

Applications are due by February 1st.

Teen Leader for National 4-H Native Bee

Challenge

Youth in grades 9th-12th can apply to be teen lead-

ers for the National 4-H Native Bee Challenge. This

is a great opportunity to gain leadership skills for

youth interested in insects, agriculture, conservation,

The Professional Photographers of Iowa Winter Convention hands-on workshop is February 3, 2019, in Ce-

National 4-H Photography Summit

Photography is a form of art that is more accessible than ever. The National Youth Summit on photography

Agriculture Opportunities for 4-H Members

World Food Prize

4-H youth participants can register for the the 2019 World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute on April 29, 2019

at Iowa State University. Registration will open February 7-March 25, 2019. During this daylong event stu-

dents are able to explore majors and careers related to combating global hunger & poverty while also pre-

senting their own ideas and solutions to real-world experts and professionals. More information can be found

AgOvation

AgOvation is a research-based competition that challenges youth to explore and develop innovative science-

based solutions to agricultural problems that they identify in their own communities. Youth in grades 7

through 12 work in teams of three to five members to develop a project and create a presentation to share

their results, findings and/or created solution/product. Youth work with a team coach and mentor from the

agriculture related field that most closely relates to their project. Youth are also encouraged to connect with

representatives from Iowa State University and the agribusiness community, who are eager to meet and

work with the next generation of leaders in agriculture and STEM (science, technology, engineering and

mathematics).

The top three teams are awarded scholarships for post-secondary education. Registration is open now

To celebrate all of your achievements and to welcome 2019, 4-Hers are invited to a Fun Roller Skating Party!

When: Sunday, January 6th 3:15-5:15 pm

Where: New Hampton Crystal Ball Roller Skating Rink. 1557 Jasper Ave, New Hampton.

Who: All 4-Hers along with their families.

Cost: Free!!

Please RSVP by calling the Extension Office at 641-394-2174 no later than January 4th at 4:30 pm, so we know the number of people that plan to attend.

You are welcome to bring snacks if you would like. Parents, please pick up your children by 5:15 if you plan to drop them off.

Multi County Citizenship Trip

Are you a 7th– 11th grade 4-Her interested in learning about our gov-

ernment in Washington D.C. amd meeting 4-Hers from neighboring

counties? Then we want you to be a part of the Citizenship Trip!

Youth in Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, and Winneshiek Counties have the

opportunity to learn about civic engagement and how to be a strong leader in the communi-

ty and country. This program is a 2 year commitment where youth will meet monthly, visit

the Capital in Des Moines and take part in workshops learning from several experts in the

government field. The highlight of the program is the trip to Washington D.C. in in the spring

of 2020, where the youth will experience all that they learn about and so much more!

If you missed the November kick off meeting, don’t worry, a second kick off meeting will take

place on Thursday January 3rd at 6:30 pm at the Extension Office. We will discuss what the

trip is and ‘What is Citizenship?’ With any questions please contact Jaci in the Extension
