The Indian Railways is among the world’s largest rail networks. The Indian Railways route length network is spread over 115,000 km, with 12,617 passenger trains and 7,421 freight trains each day from 7,349 stations plying 23 million travellers and 3 million tonnes (MT) of freight daily. India's railway network is recognized as one of the largest railway systems in the world under single management.
A total of 1,106 RKM (Route kilometre) has been electrified across the entire Indian Railways network. In collaboration with the Government of Japan, a high-speed passenger corridor project between Ahmedabad to Mumbai was undertaken in Railway Budget 2016-17. Construction work has already begun, and the total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 1,01,480 crore (US$ 14.52 billion). The project is estimated to be operational by 2022.
The railway network is also ideal for long-distance travel and movement of bulk commodities, apart from being an energy efficient and economic mode of conveyance and transport. The Government of India has focused on investing on railway infrastructure by making investor-friendly policies. It has moved quickly to enable Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in railways to improve infrastructure for freight and high-speed trains. At present, several domestic and foreign companies are also looking to invest in Indian rail projects. Under the Union Budget 2019-20, the Government of India allocated Ministry of Railways Rs 94,071 crore (US$ 14.11 billion). FDI Inflows in railway related components from April 2000 to June 2019 stood at US$ 977.24 million. As per Union Budget 2019-20, government plans to enhance the metro railway initiatives by encouraging more Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiatives and ensuring completion of sanctioned works, while supporting Transit Oriented Development (TOD) to ensure commercial activity around transit hubs.
The Indian Railway network is growing at a healthy rate. Indian Railways is targeting to increase its freight traffic to
3.3 billion tonnes by 2030 from 1.1 billion tonnes in 2017. With increasing participation expected from private
players, both domestic and foreign, due to favourable policy measures, both passenger and freight traffic is expected
to grow rapidly over the medium to long term. Government of India’s focus on infrastructure is a major factor which
will accelerate growth of railways. - (Source: India Brand Equity Foundation, www.ibef.org)
