The Florida Wood Turning Symposium will be February 7 thru 9 at the Lake Yale Baptist Center in Eustis,
Fl. Our own Jack Shelton will be one of the featured demonstrators. I will be there as a videographer.
For those of you who have never been, it is a great experience.
Our Vice President, Paul has been working tirelessly to get our own woodturning show ready to go. It
will be on February 15th and 16th at Langford Park in Rio on N Dixie Highway. Hours are 10:00am to
4:00pm each day.
The demo for the meeting will be “How to Turn a Top” for the Fair. Saturday at Jack’s will be hands-on
top turning and turning a “Beads of Courage Box”. Remember to bring your own tools
The Fair starts on February 28th, a sign-up sheet will be passed around. If you will be helping at the Fair
you need to go out to the fairgrounds office and get an ID. We also need you to round out blanks of top
wood for the fair and Rio. Call Bob, Jack or Ed and we will get you blanks to round.
Do not forget to bring your 2020 club dues, ($30.00)
Do not forget to bring something for show and tell.

Safety minute: INJURY REPORT
Jose Vasquez sustained a deep cut over his right eye requiring a trip to the ER and six stitches. Jose says he is fine and wanted to share this incident because there are some important lessons-learned. Here is his account of what happened:
“This morning I decided to do a bit of turning after about two weeks lay off. I was working on a lid for one of two segmented boxes which I had previously completed. I got to complete the first lid with no fan fare. While working on the second lid the piece flew off the lathe and caught me above the left eyebrow causing a deep cut and a visit to the ER I needed six stitched to close up. I am fine, it could have been worse. So what happened ? I was using the Cole Jaws, I should have made sure that the wood blank was square it wasn't it 4.5 X4.0 meaning it was only being held on three sides as opposed to all four sides. This is something that we all know to do when using these type of jaws. This was the primary cause of this accident. Of course it would have helped if I had my face shield on ( I did not) . Lessons learned:
(1) wear your face shield
(2) stay out of the line of fire
(3) make sure your work is properly secured (If my blank had been square it would not have had room to slide it the jaws causing it to fly off).”
One other thing I do when using my Cole jaws is bring up the tail stock to support the work. You can accomplish 99% of what you need to do with the tail stock in place.
Thanks to Jose for sharing his experience.
Have fun and work safe!

Beads of Courage Box Specifications
6” (5” min) wide by 5” (4” min) wide.
Box bases should be wide enough so the box is stable and does not tip over easily. Lids for Beads of Courage boxes should be
easy for small or ill children to remove or lift. Any knobs or finials should be easy for a small child to grasp and to elaborate so
they don’t break. Avoid excessively elaborate designs that may easily break or be damaged; remember, hospital rooms have
limited storage space.
Finishing of boxes is extremely important! Beads of Courage recipients are susceptible to germs / infections / mold. Items that
have not been properly sealed can harbor mold. Please take time to ensure you are using a safe finishing process that does not
contain toxic materials. Also do not use finishes like linseed oil that take a long time to cure or outgass. Allow for appropriate
curing times for your finish.
